DC switchyard
The DC switchyard contains all the external equipment neededfor an HVDC transmission: Voltage dividersCurrent measuring devicesSmoothing ReactorsDC Filters
Transmissions with cables (underground or underwater) doesnot require any DC filter. Transmissions with OH typicallyrequire DC filters to prevent the harmonics generated by the converter to be transported along the DC line. A harmonic filter for 12th and a high pass is usually enough.

Substation Earthing
The converter station is connectedwith the earth in a grid of groundwires (cu).
All apparatus and structures are connected to the earthing gridfrom the station as a securitymeasure.
Prevents dangerous potentials to establish in occurrances of lightnings, short circuits and transitional currents at commutations

Protection against lightning
The apparatus in the converter station are protected againstlightning by a network of shield wires

System bus
The buses are fixed or flexible. Connection joints are designed to withstand forces of short circuits, the earthquakes, and the winds and loads of ice. The telescopicconnection between the valves is particularly capable to withstand seismic forces.

Verification of earthquake design
The verification is basically by calculations of earthquake forces.
A simple mechanical testing is often done to measure mechanicaldamping and resonance.
In special cases it is tested in a vibration table.
