This year’s event included a delicious dinner and dinner music provided by Jerry Ayscue. A number of recognitions were made on behalf of the Vance County Schools including

recognition of Vance County Schools Principal of the Year, Dr. Carnetta Thomas of L.B. Yancey Elementary School; Assistant Principal of the Year, Lemondre Watson of Vance County Middle School; Vance County Teacher of the Year, Angela Cusac of Vance County High School; and Vance County Beginning Teacher of the Year, Donna Stratmon of Vance County High School.

The Vance County Schools Shining Moment in Education award for 2018-2019 was presented by Doctor Jacqueline Batchelor-Crosson, principal of Pinkston Street Elementary, and Doctor Michael Putney, principal of Dabney Elementary. This award Recognizes the contributions of the most outstanding business, organization, church, civic or community group or individual who has supported Vance County Schools in a given school year. The 2018-2019 recipient was First United Methodist Church of Henderson.

In the presentation, Dr. Batchelor-Crosson and Dr. Putney said of the recipient, First Unit-ed Methodist Church of Henderson, has continued an amazing partnership each school year with Pinkston Street and Dabney elementary schools for more than 10 years. Each year, church members volunteer in the two schools as mentors and tutors for students, Lunch Buddies, class-room helpers and Prayer Partners for staff members. The church also supplies, on a weekly basis, nonperishable food items for the Backpack Buddies program, so that students can take the food items home over weekends and holiday breaks to have something to eat while they are way from school. Church members do even more by adopting families at Christmas who otherwise would go without gifts and needed food. The church supports families in the schools who may need warm clothing during the cold weather months, new pairs of shoes or new student uniforms. Their efforts make the students, their families and staff feel appreciated and cared for.

The information below was taken from a study commissioned by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives with support from Small Business Network Inc., Market Street (A part of The Schapiro Group Inc.).

Most consumers (59%) think that being active in the local chamber of commerce is an effective business strategy overall. It is 29% more effective, however, for communicating to consumers that a company uses good business practices and 26% more effective for communicating that a business is reputable.

If a company shows that it is highly involved in its local chamber (e.g., sits on the board), consumers are 12% more likely to think that its products stack up better than its competition.

When a consumer thinks that a company’s products stack up better against the competition because the company is highly involved in its local chamber of commerce, it is because he or she infers that the company is trustworthy, involved in the community, and is an industry leader.

When consumers know that a restaurant franchise is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 40% more likely to eat at the franchise in the next few months.

When consumers know that an insurance company is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 43% more likely to consider buying insurance from it.

When consumers know that a small business is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 44% more likely to think favorably of it and 63% more likely to purchase goods or services from the company in the future.
