All the lanes in the worldwon’t make you happy.

The effects of wicked prob-lems such as rush hour congestion and light pol-lution extend beyond the identified topics themselves to a web of interrelated im-pacts and effects on cul-ture, the environment, and human well-being. With each of these problems one or more solutions have been identified, however, with both, it would be nearly impossible to have society respond favorably to such solutions. Driving the speed limit or leaving a city in darkness is not part of the culture of a devel-oped world. Because of this, systems developed for the benefit of culture, have become wicked problems with many adverse affects.

This collection of sources is focused on lifestyle in an urban contemporary society examining issues that impact environmental and cultural change, as well as psychology and human-well being. The sources gath-

ered include research anthologies, government public service announcements, sci-entific journals, editorial articles, documentary films, and of course, books.

Traffic congestion is an ever growing problem in our increasingly urbanized world, with more and more suburbs popping up, and people moving away from large eco-nomic centres to largely residential ones, the number of cars on the road is explod-ing. That is not to say however that the idea of congestion is a new one. Since an-cient Rome the issue of what to do with extra traffic has plagued lawmakers. This report aims to compile data on the logistical and psychological causes of peak hour congestion in order to understand how common driving habits negatively af-fect the efficiency of our commute, so that we can consider a change in both mind-set and lifestyle in order to reduce congestion, travel times, pollution, an improve safety.

The effect of light pollution in urbanized settings too has increased to the point where immediate change is essential. Artificial night lighting was introduced on a broad scale in the modern era to increase productivity. With increased productiv-ity came the ending of night. Since that time, cities have grown outwards and up-wards increasing the amount of light produced and energy required. The night sky lightened significantly and stars have disappeared, while health effects and disrup-tion of ecological systems were uncovered.

This report aims to compile data related to ways in which light pollution can be prevented by individuals, policy-makers, and larger corporations in order to re-duce the adverse effects of light pollution on ecological structures and human

health. Light pollution is perhaps the only major environmental issue, which has a straightforward solution, however, the challenge is defining light pollution and making society aware of the seriousness of this issue. Through the detailed research analyses pertaining to rush hour congestion and light pollution, a further understanding of research topics and effects of these wick-ed problems will be addressed.

The effects of wicked problems such as rush hour congestion and light pollution extend beyond the identified topics themselves to a web of interrelated impacts and effects on culture, the environment, and human well-being.
