    Huntington Arts Council

The arts are a vibrant part of life in Huntington and on Long Island. The fall offers many exciting events at Huntington Arts Council. As I continue my tenure as Executive Director, I am proud of all of the programs and activities that we are able to accomplish with the help of the dedicated staff, board and our loyal members.

Our busy summer season began with a bang on June 8 with our Back to the 60’s celebration event honoring Susan Miller with the Harry and Sandy Chapin Arts and Humanitarian Award (see below). The Huntington Summer Arts Festival kicked off on June 27 with 42 evenings of entertainment featuring something for everyone. Our Main Street Gallery housed several successful

shows, and continues its busy schedule. Our Invitational Show Timeless Art features the work of four longtime members which has been on display since September 15, followed by “Nightmare on Main Street” and our annual Art Auction which will take on a new and exciting redesign so to speak as On the Block. The Huntington Art Walk will be held on Sunday, October 22 in collaboration with several Huntington arts organizations (see ad below).

Our NYSCA Long Island Arts Grants program wraps up the workshops for grantees, and our grants coordinator, Emily Rapuano, will continue to work with applicants to offer technical assistance with their grants. Our Arts in Education

JOURNEY Program offers multi-cultural arts education workshops for teachers (see page 8). We are very proud that HAC is now an approved Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) sponsor by NYS Department of Education.

HAC offers many exciting and enriching activities. Please visit us often and enjoy the arts along with us.

    Fall 2017New Members

    Membersof the Month

    Dear Friends: In 2015 the

Town of Huntington selected designs by five different local artists for transformation of traffic signal boxes along Wall and Gerard Streets in

cooperation with the Huntington Village Business Improvement District (BID). Due to the positive public response to these eye-catching Public Art installations, we subsequently issued additional Requests for Proposals (RFP) from area artists for transformation of more signal boxes in Huntington Village, as well as to extend these projects to locations in Huntington Station.

Generous support from both the Huntington Village BID and the Huntington Station BID has helped enable the installation of ten new Signal Box Public Art projects over the summer and into the fall. Five new projects have been installed on Main Street (between New York Avenue and the West Neck Road/Woodbury Road intersection). In addition, new projects have been installed, or are in the process of being installed, at the following locations: three projects on Depot Road (between 10th Street and 17th Street), one at the West exit from the LIRR North Parking Garage in Huntington Station, and one at the intersection of Woodbury Road/High Street/Soundview Road/Carley Avenue. Images and further information about both the 2015 projects and those recently installed can be found on the Town’s

website at www.HuntingtonNY.gov/TrafficSignalBoxes. However, as with any artwork, these are best experienced in person, so please look for these projects as you travel in Huntington Village and Huntington Station. Meanwhile, the Town has selected designs for ten more Signal Boxes projects at locations on Rt. 25A and Rt. 110 and is waiting for approval from NYSDOT to proceed with their installation. I invite you join me in looking forward to these new creative installations delighting us in the coming months as we journey through our community.

The 52nd Huntington Summer Arts Festival enjoyed a rousing conclusion with a celebratory performance by Brother Joscephus & the Love Revolution on August 13. The Festival’s annual schedule of music, dance and entertainment raced by at an exhilarating pace - 42 concerts on the Chapin Rainbow Stage plus five more at the Robert W. Krueger Bandstand in Northport Harbor, all over a span of seven weeks. The Festival is an extraordinary gift from the Town of Huntington to its residents and the entire L.I. community. It provides opportunities to see and hear superb artists both local and from across the U.S. and around the globe, representing an eclectic mix of musical genres and performing arts disciplines. The Huntington Arts Council is proud of its stewardship and privileged to curate and present this remarkable Festival.

There are so many to thank for making the Festival such a special extended event. We thank the Town Council for its support, and the Department of Parks & Recreation, General Services and Public Safety. We also thank the County of Suffolk and the New York State Council on the Arts. Special thanks to Presenting Sponsor Canon for its

continued commitment. Thank you to our Concert Sponsors: Astoria Bank, Daniel Gale Sotheby’s, Folk Music Society of Huntington, Philips Boyne, Start To Finish Remodeling & Handyman, Weber Law Group; In-kind Supporters: Bob Murphy’s Violin Shop, D’Addario & Co., King Kullen, Konig & Meyer/Connolly Music, Korg USA, and Samson/Hartke. Our deepest gratitude is due to all the talented touring artists and ensembles; to the immensely skilled and hard-working technical staff who make it all seem so effortless; and to the Summer Scape Volunteers without whose devotion and time we could not operate. A special shout out to our wonderful Summer Interns – Jessica Campitiello, Medora Benson, Alexa Forberg and Jennie Baker. HAC’s Board of Directors and dedicated staff are gratefully recognized and appreciated. Partners in presenting merit additional recognition, including the Folk Music Society of Huntington, the Friends of the Coltrane Home, plus the Musicians Performance Trust Foundation and Chamber Players International in support of L.I. Concert Orchestra. Performing organizations and ensembles meriting high praise include the Huntington Community Band, the Northport Community Band, the Long Island Dance Consortium, Plaza Theatrical Productions, BroadHollow Theatre Productions and the many other local artists and ensembles. The success and longevity of the Huntington Summer Arts Festival would not be possible without the support of our audience. A huge THANKS to you the public!

Each season the Huntington Arts Council coordinates outreach opportunities that bring select Summer Arts Festival performers to various locations throughout the community. These events are a wonderful way for a diverse audience to experience the excitement of live entertainment first hand. One of our summer interns, Jessica Campitiello attended each of the Meet the Artist events. Below is a wonderful article detailing her personal experience.

Affected by Artist OutreachBy Jessica Campitiello

This summer, I was selected by Adelphi University’s Jaggar Community Fellows Program to serve as the Huntington Arts Council’s Summer Arts Festival and PR Intern. In essence, it was my job to film and photograph all of the performing artists that came to the Chapin Rainbow Stage. It was an amazing experience and by far one of the best summers I have ever had. With the help of Performing Arts Director John Chicherio, I have been able to meet so many diverse groups of artists, especially those who have an interest in the community. I was lucky enough to not only work with these amazing people on stage but also at what have been affectionately termed “Meet the Artist” Outreach Events. On Friday, June 30, I had the privilege of joining the Adam Ezra Group on their visit to the Huntington Hospital Cancer Center. After setting up in a small lounge and letting the room overflow with nurses and patients, the band started to play an acoustic set of indie rock songs with heartwarming, inspirational lyrics. Ezra was happy to answer any questions the audience had about himself, the music, and the band along the way. As someone whose father finished chemotherapy less than one week prior to this performance, it was impossible for me not to enjoy the energy the band brought into the hospital. Watching the patients unwind in front of this tiny, makeshift stage was by far one of the most meaningful experiences I was able to take part in this summer. The next day, Saturday, July 1, the Grammy Award-winning and internationally acclaimed jazz group, New York Voices, performed. Before their show, vocalists Darmon Meader and Peter Eldridge sat with All About Jazz journalist Dan Bilawsky for a pre-show interview. Despite the rain, the talk had a good audience turnout. It was quite interesting to hear what such talented musicians had to say about their work, and listening to them speak about how their group has evolved over the years was fascinating.

On Thursday, July 11, I traveled with Grammy Award-winning and internationally acclaimed jazz performer, Oran Etkin, to the Huntington YMCA Performing Arts Group. The children sat enthralled as Etkin taught them about different instruments, songs, and musicians from jazz history through his program, Timbalooloo. Like the pied piper, they followed him around the room to dance and sing. Everyone in the room was laughing and smiling watching the kids have such a great time. Etkin truly has a talent for

Huntington Summer Arts FestivalMeet the Artist-A Personal Perspective

working with children and integrating fun with music education. One week later, on Tuesday, July 18, I visited the Huntington High School’s Cultural Enrichment Camp with saxophonist and jazz educator Hayes Greenfield. While there, he spoke with the kids about how to stay motivated and pursue their goals as young musicians. The children were especially interested in how to express emotion through music, which Greenfield demonstrated through improvising a piece about searching for a lost dog. The kids were thrilled to hear him say that they could play on stage with him later that night, some dashing off as soon as he said it to grab their instruments from their lockers. Watching the kids be so engaged in creating music made me excited for the future of these little performing artists. On Friday, July 21, I accompanied Emmy Award-winning and internationally acclaimed jazz guitarist Chieli Minucci to the Northport VA Medical Center. The veterans were all thrilled to watch Minucci perform, the group quickly growing in size as he played on. Throughout his set, he told stories of his wild adventures as a musician, which the whole audience found humor in. It was clear that his talent and energy put both veterans and staff in a positive mood. Saturday, July 22 was Coltrane Day. The nighttime performances were kicked off by an interview of jazz harpist Brandee Younger by journalist Bill Ayers. It was fascinating to hear her speak about how she rose in the music world, as jazz harpists are few and far between. She was enthusiastic to tell her story, and the crowd was eager to listen. I was especially excited for her performance that night, as she has played with one of my long-time favorite bands, Postmodern Jukebox. Younger possesses a talent that entrances the whole audience in a gorgeous way, and it was clear from the interview that her passion is what demands attention. On Thursday, July 27, I went with classical musicians Douglas Lora and João Luiz of the award-winning Brasil Guitar Duo to Huntington Senior Citizens Center. I don’t believe I have seen an audience more engaged with a performance before. They kept the conversation rolling with questions about travel, the band, Baroque music, tuning instruments, and even proper fingernail care. As many in the audience are musicians themselves, they were eager to hear all Lora and Luiz had to say. Many of the same seniors were seen at the full show later that night, wanting to hear more stories and music from the pair. Prior to the duo’s full concert, Maria Loreta of the Sol y Sombra Spanish Dance Company taught an eager group of dancers how to Samba on stage, despite the rain coming down outside.

On Thursday, August 3, I met the award-winning and internationally acclaimed Villalobos Brothers at the Town of Huntington’s program, Project PLAY. Faced with an audience of 325 rowdy children, the trio grabbed the attention of the whole room as they began to play their violins. They told the kids that by hard work and practice,

they could become talented musicians too. They warned the children, however, that happiness and passion for what you do are more important than any amount of money or fame. I hope the kids took that lesson to heart, for it’s something I completely agree with. On Saturday, August 5, there was a pre-concert talk between Long Island Concert Orchestra conductor David Stewart Wiley and award-winning Hungarian violinist Bela Horvath. They spoke about Horvath’s travels and the uniqueness of his violin as well as about the pieces they would play later that night. It was interesting to hear their insight on the music and how beautiful the compositions are. Listening to Horvath describe how he feels while playing music was moving in and of itself, stating that he hopes that his emotions can come through in his work and change the audience in some way. I, for one, believe he accomplished that goal. This summer was an incredible journey from beginning to end. The “Meet the Artists” Outreach Events were a blast to accompany and, I believe, a true gift to the community. All of the artists were great to work with and I genuinely cannot think of a better way to have spent my time. My dream is to one day do promotional work on Broadway, just as my grandmother did. I would like to thank everyone at the Huntington Arts Council and Chapin Rainbow Stage for helping me get one step closer to achieving my career goals and making this experience possible. It was a lot of work, a lot of fun, and I hope to someday work with you all again.

A Big Hit…Free Crafts at the

Summer Arts Festival This summer families were invited to participate in free crafts before the Tuesday Family Night shows at the Summer Arts Festival. The craft table was open an hour before showtime and children ages three and up enjoyed a new craft each week. We made items such as harmonicas, glowing fireflies and kazoos! We’ll be back again next year.

and special individuals over the years who have influenced and supported me. I take from them friendships that I will carry with me as I move on to the next phase of my life. The talents of the past and current staff and board will serve to strengthen the

effectiveness of the mission of the council and I am very proud of have been a part of its growth.” Florence said about her time with the Council. Florence will be greatly missed by all, but particularly her co-workers, the Board of Directors, volunteers and members. We wish her well in her retirement and sincerely thank her for her 28 years with the Arts Council.

Thank You for 28 Years! Assistant Director, Florence Dallari Retires

In July Florence Dallari, Assistant Director of the Huntington Arts Council, retired after 28 years of dedication to the organization. Florence’s hard work and commitment helped her successfully serve in a variety of roles during her tenure. From her first position as Bookkeeper in 1989, to Business Manager and then Assistant Director, her contributions were an integral part of all of our programs and services. Florence had a particular fondness for the

Exhibition Program and Art Auction Fundraiser. She developed close relationships with our artist and local business members. Florence’s professionalism and genuine enthusiasm for the success of Huntington Arts Council was evident in everything she did. To recognize Florence’s 28 years with us it was only fitting to celebrate in a meaningful way. The Board of Directors hosted a small private dinner in her honor. Acknowledging Florence’s close ties to our artist, business and community members the Council also held a celebratory reception in the gallery. The gallery was filled with colleagues, friends and family showing their appreciation for her. Florence was awarded several proclamations from the Town of Huntington and state and local officials, many of whom were in attendance. “My years at the Huntington Arts Council have been very exciting. In 1989 I met with Executive Director, Cindy Kiebitz and was caught up in her enthusiasm for the Arts Council and accepted the position as Bookkeeper. Having worked in the not for profit world for close to 15 years, this was my first exposure to a creative arts organization. There have been many Board Members, Artists Members, co-workers

2017 DEC In the SpotlightStorytelling For A Better World:

Voice From Centennial Avenue School Ama Yawson is a winner of the 2017 Creative Communities grant. She worked with various principals, teachers, and teaching artists to communicate the fundamental elements of building a story, from the art of it to the business of it. A powerful example of her project is shown through working with special education students at Centennial Avenue Elementary School, located in Roosevelt, New York, where Dr. Barbara Solomon is principal. With the assistance of the principals and teachers, Ama articulates how to develop a proper story, in other words, putting together a beginning, middle, and an end. She and the other teachers help the students construct their story. The students identify a main character who encounters a difficult situation; by the end of the student’s story, they express how the main character overcomes the obstacle that is faced. In the story, each student identifies a moral that they want to convey to the reader.

The purpose of this project is to use art as an instrument to teach students how to think critically and inspire them to advocate for social change. Through this program, Ama hopes to inspire students and young people about the business of book publishing, while expressing cultural diversity and reflect upon themes for a better tomorrow.

    Freeport Farmers Market

The Cedarmore Corporation was a winner of the 2017 Creative Communities Grant. Cedarmore Corporation is a community based 501(c) 3 organization that provides comprehensive programs and services to Long Island youth and their families. Cedarmore is the host of the Freeport Farmers Market, a  youth-run market offering fresh nutritious fruits and vegetables to the community. The market provides high school students an opportunity to develop entrepreneurial skills and operate a Department of Agriculture compliant business, as they earn an hourly wage. Throughout the season, the market not only serves as a great venue where health and nutrition product, crafts and baked goods are sold, but also a place where workshops and cultural arts programming are held and community related information is distributed. One of the farmers’ market objectives is to build community engagement by providing a regular get-together for anyone and everyone to shop and enjoy a variety of live, culturally mixed entertainment! By doing this, the Farmers Market inspires the growth of every man, woman, and child’s creativity. “This grant will help us reach our goal of providing an opportunity for a variety of local, culturally diverse musicians, poets, artists, fashion designers, and authors to perform in a unique setting; the Freeport Farmers’ Market,” says Debra Wheat-Williams the Program Director. “We believe this will create a marketplace that fosters social gathering, community building and promotes healthy food choices.” For the full list of 2017 LI Grants for the Arts Awardees go to www.huntingtonarts.org/programs/grants-for-the-arts/funded-projects/.
