Message from Mayor Nicola Smith

In just a few short years, the Lynnwood City Center Station will be opening, and our city will be the transportation hub of South Snohomish County. The upcoming arrival of light rail to our city requires us to strategically and collaboratively work with our

transportation partners to improve access and flow in and around our city streets.

One of our top strategic priorities is to “Fulfill the community vision for the City Center and Lynnwood Link light rail”, which calls for Lynnwood to “ invest in efficient, integrated, local and regional transportation systems.”

This year I have been selected to serve on both the Community Transit Board of Directors and the Sound Transit Board of Directors. This is a great honor, and a valuable opportunity that gives Lynnwood a strong voice in advocating for transportation improvements for South Snohomish County.

While serving on the Community Transit board, I will be one of nine elected officials from Snohomish County and the cities within the transit agency’s service district. As a Sound Transit Board Member I will be one of three members from Snohomish County, along with ten from King County, four from Pierce County and the secretary of the Washington State Department of Transportation.

I pledge to serve Lynnwood and continue our strong advocacy so that our great city seizes our opportunity to enhance transportation and works towards achieving our vision of being a regional model for a sustainable, vibrant community!

Healthy Lynnwood Grants The City of Lynnwood Healthy Lynnwood Grants program supports community coming together to enhance and beautify neighborhoods and public spaces, encourage civic engagement, and promote the general interest and well-being of our Lynnwood Community. Projects considered for grant awards can be around neighborhood improvements, creative art projects, and funds activities and events to bring neighbors together.

The City of Lynnwood is proactively engaging with our State Legislators to advocate and convey our City’s legislative priorities. Many decisions that are made in Olympia have direct or indirect impacts on our City’s ability to provide services to the people of Lynnwood. When our representatives know our City priorities, they are better equipped to represent our interests in Olympia.

In late January, Lynnwood Officials traveled to Olympia for the Association of Washington Cities - City Action Days. During their visit, our delegation met with Lieutenant Governor Cyrus Habib, Senator Jesse Salomon, and Representatives Lauren Davis, Strom Petersen, and Cindy Ryu, and Governor Jay Inslee’s Advisory staff.

The City of Lynnwood’s Federal Lobbyist, Summit Strategies Government, continues to work closely with the Washington State Congressional delegation to advance the importance of Lynnwood’s transportation and infrastructure priorities, and represent the City before U.S. Congress to advance those priorities.

The Census determines who gets money and power. Every ten years, the population of the United States is counted in order to distribute money and political representation. For every person who is counted, about $2,000 will go to the local community. Lynnwood is part of a fast growing region and it is important we receive our fair share of money and power. If we don’t have everyone counted, places like New

York, California and Florida will get some of our share of federal resources.

In March of 2020, you will receive a

postcard inviting you to take the census online. If you have not completed the census online by April 8, you will receive a reminder letter with a paper survey. Census staff may follow up for in person interviews in May-July 2020.

Get counted and help bring those important dollars to our Lynnwood community to be put to good use! The City of Lynnwood is a proud member of the Snohomish County Complete Count Committee. For more information on the US Census and efforts happening in our County, visit www.SnohomishCountyWA.gov/5418/2020-Census.

Community members can still access our city website by visiting www.LynnwoodWA.gov. While a majority of our web content has been transferred to the new site, there is still work being done to refine the new site. 196th St SW Improvement ProjectThis project will add two more lanes (one in each direction) to 196th St SW from approximately 37th Ave W to 48th Ave W. It will also include median barriers, wider sidewalks and landscape features. These improvements will enhance safety in the area and accommodate the growth of City Center by improving traffic flow and increasing capacity. The improvements will also create an enhanced pedestrian environment with a boulevard appearance.

The City received a grant for $1,730,000 to complete the design of this project. We also received grants for $19,980,000 from Regional sources for Right of Way and Construction.

Construction was anticipated to begin in early 2020, however at the time of this publication, due to budget implications related to the passage of State Initiative 976, Washington State has put on hold several transportation projects. This project has approximately $10 million of State funding on hold. The City continues to advocate to our State Legislators to fully fund the $10 million needed to complete this project.

Connect Lynnwood Plan Community SurveyThe City is developing a new Active & Accessible Transportation Plan which will prioritize opportunities to improve walking and bicycling conditions, improve connections to schools, parks, and transit, and develop a safe, efficient transportation system.

We want to hear from you! Share your thoughts about walking, bicycling, and rolling by filling out our community survey. Visit bit.ly/LynnwoodAATP before March 27th to provide your feedback

The new, service-focused website is mobile-friendly, easy to navigate, and makes accessibility a priority. It continues our efforts to improve community access to information and public services.

“The goal of our new website is to create a shift in how community members interact with our city services” stated Mayor Nicola Smith. “By reducing the amount of time and clicks it takes to get to frequently searched for information and prioritizing the public’s needs, we’ve created a tool for our community members to easily access the information and service they want and need.”

Throughout most of 2019, the City conducted several surveys and in-person testing to hear from community members what challenges they were facing with the current site, and what was important to them in a new site.

A main feature of the new website is a robust search bar, and we encourage users to start there to find almost anything on our site! Also featured on the homepage are the six top services our users are searching for:

• Report a Problem• Pay Your Utility Bill• Apply For a Permit• Parks, Pools, Parties & Classes• City Council Meetings and Public Hearings• Sign Up For eNews

If you have any city web pages book marked as your favorites, you may need to update those links.

If you have difficulty locating some information or would like to give your feedback, please feel free to contact the Webmaster at [email protected] or 425-670-5023.
