Why Human Factors – Just a Fad?
“The principles and practices of Human Factors focus on optimising human
performance through better understanding the behaviour of individuals,
their interactions with each other and with their environment. By
acknowledging human limitations, Human Factors offers ways to minimise
and mitigate human frailties, so reducing medical error and its
consequences. The system-wide adoption of these concepts offers a
unique opportunity to support cultural change and empower the NHS to put
patient safety and clinical excellence at its heart.”

• 3 main questions
• Is there something we can do
together in the East Midlands
to support safer patient care
through Human Factors?
• How would it work?
• How would people need to
behave to make it successful

Proposed HFE Education
and Training Pathway
Masters and PhD
qualifications for HF
would be aligned to
the already
established Clinical
Academic Careers
pathway (HEE-NIHR)
HEE-EM have funded 11
places for a PGCert in HF for
NHS staff, They have to
undertake a HF project
within their NHS organisation
