It's always sad to learn of someone's passing & on themorning of March 5 when checking Pennock's Forum, this thread caught my eye RIP Hulki

The Fiero community had lost the person we like tocall the “Father of the Fiero” & it was wonderful tohear all the nice things that people were saying aboutthe man whether they had met him or not.

Many NEFA & MAFOA members have been able tolisten to him in person at both the 20th & 25th FieroAnniversary shows. Some of us also have trophies orFiero related items autographed by Hulki.

(It was interesting at the 20th show to see parts ofFieros – some pieces quite large - being carried intothe banquet hall for Hulki to sign.)

I know I treasure Hulki's autograph on my 2nd placetrophy for my 88 T-top Coupe from that show & haveit prominently displayed in our game room.

Jen Goss from MAFOA has Hulki's signature on the back of her driver's seat from the 20th show . She will always remember & treasure the neat things that Hulki had to say about her 85GT, the Blue Demon.

I'm sure there are other present & past members of both clubs who also have memories from those two anniversary shows where Hulki was a speaker at the banquets.

Jen is doing some research for an article on Hulki that is planned for the May Fiero Pride, but in the meantime we thought that you would all like to read the speech by guest speakers Hulki Aldicacki, Fiero Program Manager & Chief Engineer & Donald “Parki” Parkinson, Head of Strategic Planning for Pontiac from the 20th Annuversary show.

MAFOA member Jeff Ramberg nicely used his skills to edit the speech for print in the Fiero Pride February 2004.

On the following pages I've copied & reprinted the speech from that night. See Pages 3 – 8.

40th Annual Gettysburg Region AACA Meet

Submitted by: Tom Derr

The 40th Annual Gettysburg Region AACA Meet is scheduled for Saturday, June 13, 2015 at the Latimore Valley Fairgrounds about 7 miles south of Dillsburg, PA. The featured vehicles this year are all rear & mid-engine cars, which is pretty much top dead center for our Fieros. Featured vehicles will receive participation awards. This show is in a rural location at a dirt track from yester-year along a meandering stream. It is a very nicecountry setting that takes you back 60 years. At this location is also the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing &admission to the museum is free. I’ve been there & it is a nice museum. There is a large pavilion in theinfield…& the food is great. Also present for the show are race cars, antique gas engines, farm tractors - I lovethe tractor parade - & related equipment. The Fairgrounds hosts a flea market & car corral as well. There istrailer parking available. Trophies are awarded at 2:30 PM.

AACA membership is not required to register. Advanced registration till June 6th is $10 & day of show registration is $15. Vehicles must be on the show field by 11 AM to be judged. There is free registration for a second vehicle brought in by the same family…...so I will be taking both of my Fieros. Our cars can be in Class 10 - “1980 to 1995,” Class 14 – “All Day of Show Registrants” or in Class 15 “Rear & Mid-Engine Vehicles.” Custom & modified Fieros are welcomed in Class 15. Class 15 is a non-judged class & all Class 15 participants receive a Participation Trophy. This is not an AACA judging event per se, but a shine & show event. One thing though…..all cars must have a fire extinguisher present. Vendor spots are available & are 10’ wide by 30’ deep & rent at $15 in advance & $20 day of show. Same price scale applies to the car corral. The registration form, a map, & more information are available at their website, www.aacagettysburgrefion.org.Club member Kevin Berkheimer belongs to the Gettysburg Region AACA & will be in attendance as will I. If you are planning on coming, please let me know & we will try to get our cars placed together. Hope to see you there for a fun & relaxing day.

I first encountered a Fiero while sitting on the john in my late father-in-law's basement. (How's that for the 'attention grabbing' first sentence of a story?) Looking for something to do, I picked up a copy of Popular Mechanics & read an article about the 'amazing' new construction process of 'mill & drill' for a new economy 2-seater from Pontiac. I was interested & even checked out the car at the dealer up the road when they came in & liked the style, except for the rubber bumper strip & the underpowered (95hp) 4-cylinder in the engine bay. I had owned first year 2-seat 'true' sports cars: a '65 Sunbeam Tiger (164hp/243fp torque) & a '70 Datsun 240Z (161hp/146fp torque) & both were lighter cars than the Fiero. I was slightly disap-pointed & under 'cost restraints' like the Fiero's designers. Being married with house/wife/child & subsequent lack of funds proscribed buying a new car.

Thus I continued driving used station wagons until 1999 when my son wrecked my next-to-last one. I decided then the next 'second' car would be just forme, as I always got the older car anyway. I investi-gated all used 2-seaters that met my requirements:legroom, fun to drive, condition, ease of repair & initial cost. The Toyota MR-2, Mazda Miata, Honda Del Sol, & the Fiero were all considered. The Fiero met all my 'needs'...particularly price. I found a car near Delaware that was being sold, my Silver 85GT.The owner had two blond twins ready for college & too many toys. His wife liked the Fiero the least &

having tried to unsuccessfully sell it at Carlisle for $3500, it was reduced to $2800. A 28k, two owner car in great condition, it became mine that day. Thatwas my first Fiero & I found out that they are a 'potato chip car'....you can't have just one. Since they have never really become collectable, they arein fact a 'collectors' dream. Since 1999, I have owned 10 Fieros: '84 Coupe, '85GT, 3-'87 SE's, 2-'87Coupes, '88 Coupe, '88 Formula, & '86 GT wreck for parts. All cost $1000 or less & all were licensed & driven except the '84 Coupe, the '86 GT & an 87 Coupe which were all resold. Six of them have been to shows.

I love the car's design & always have found myself turning around & looking at it as I walk away. Unlike seemingly most other Fiero owners, I have always preferred the notchback to the GT. I think the 'notchie'GT, & SE look aggressive with the ground effects, but that the GT just looks fat. (Sorry GT owners, that's just one man's opinion.)

No Experience Necessary

it came out really nice & has worn well over the past 21 years. But when it came to my 1986 FieroSE, I did everything myself with the exception of the paint & bodywork & the leather seats.

You can find a project car either in the local news-paper or in a car finder magazine or on line. When you find one that you are interested in, get a friend who is knowledgeable & take him/her with you to check the car out. See what it needs & if you have the skill, the money, or the friends to get the car to look & run the way you envision it, negotiate an acceptable price.

Once you get your project home, start a list of all the work that needs to be done & the parts needed.

Don’t worry about getting everything you need at once. That’s part of the fun. You can do a little each year or over the winter months while the caris in the garage. There will always be something to do. Remember, you can still ride & enjoy your project before it’s completed as long as it’s safe & road worthy.

You can drive the car if it’s still in primer or if you didn’t get those new chrome wheels that you want. It will still be fun without the headers or that nice new LS engine. So many things can be done over a long period of time while you are still enjoying the car. You & your friends will enjoy watching the car go through its transition.

There will come that time when you say finally that it’s all done. Then you decide you want to putsome chrome on the engine or you want to re-place the chrome with carbon fiber. Maybe a year down the line you decide you want headers & a complete 3” performance exhaust system. Or howabout a complete disc brake system? It’s all good. The fun is all what you make it. It’s all about what you enjoy.

So get out there & have fun with your car. Or start a new project, or even help someone else toget into the classic car hobby. It’s not always cheap, but it is always fun!

If you are a member of a car club you like classic, collectable cars. Now that does not mean that youhave to, or want to have a show quality car. In fact I would venture to say that there are many more “driver” cars than there are “show” cars out there today. But just because your car is not showquality doesn’t mean that there isn’t a lot of work that needs to be done to keep it up to standards.

A show quality car is a whole different animal so Iwon’t talk about them. I want to focus on the drivers out there.

Just what is a driver? Well that’s pretty easy. A driver is a vehicle that you like & has all the fea-tures that you like. It's a car that you don’t necessarily want to enter into car shows, but you enjoy driving on nice days & maybe go to local cruise nights. In some cases these cars are used for weddings, parades & at fund raising events to enhance a “back in the day” type of event.

Regardless of the use or intended use, there are always things that need to be done. And by pro-moting this kind of car, it will certainly help to keep the old cars alive, promote the production ofparts & get more people involved in our hobby of collecting cars.

Before acquiring the car that you want, you have to determine your limitations. By that I mean, youhave to know what kind of work you are able to do yourself & what you can afford to pay to have done by a professional. Do you have the skills needed to paint or weld? Can you rebuild an en-gine or transmission? Can you even do a tune up or oil change? All these things are important con-siderations at the very start of your quest.

Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of people out there who have no mechanical skills at all, buthave very nice cars. That’s not a problem. Some of them have a friend who works on their car for them.

Personally, I like to do as much of the work as I can. Yes, I’m a trained auto mechanic, but I don’t do body & paint. I did learn to do some of that work, with the help of a friend, using my 1980 Z-28 as my guinea pig. I made a few mistakes, but

Continued from Page 9.....MAFOA Meet a …....

My reasoning for this is that I grew up with the sleek 'classic' GTs of the '60s & '70s: Ferrari GTO& Lusso, Jag XKE, Lamborgini Miura, Maserati Mistral, Aston Martin DB5. My favorite Fiero is the one Pontiac never made, but I think should have been - the '88 SE; essentially a Formula with a GT clip, trunk light & release, PW, PD, CC & AC. If I could have afforded it, I would defin-itely have tried to COPO order one in 1988.Now 'old' & retired I am under cost restraints again & am down to only two Fieros. My now 48k factory stock silver '85 GT & an '87 Coupe, that the aforementioned '86 GT wreck has givenup it's '80k V6, lace wheels & fastback clip to make that '88SE. Come spring I'll try to get the project finished & perhaps painted. It's going to be a light blue & the blue interior, from a 90's Cavalier, is ready to go.

I worked for forty-four years making hi-temp coatings like the kind used for exhaust mani-folds. I also served four years active duty in the US Navy in the late '60s. Throw in nineteen yearsworking as an AAA dispatcher mostly on the weekends & I've led a busy life. I've always had an interest in cars starting with my uncle's '39 LaSalle. This must be why I attended & grad-uated from that College, now University.

As the club's Treasurer since 2003 & MembershipDirector, you'll always see me at our shows & always willing to talk Fieros. (Just ask anyone who knows me about the talk part!) My new lady, Bea, tags along & helps out with tasks suchas cooking & 'happily' puts up with all my Fiero activities. See you at Lititz in May or maybe the Glen in April if we can get free.
