Dear Valued Customer
As you are aware I have sold the garage to Maketu Land-
ing take ver date is to be 17th January 2017.I was con-
tacted by the new owner on Thursday 12th January that
they intend to close the workshop. I’m sure that the deci-
sion was not an easy one, but circumstances which out of
their control has lead to the decision.
I feel sadden to think that after 40 plus years there will no
longer be that service available to Maketu and surround-
ing area.
I would like to thank you once again for your support
over the last 2 years since Gordy passed . And wish you
all the very best.

Change of Guard for Chief
Shane Beech has retired from the position of Fire Chief for
Maketu Voluntary Fire Brigade. He is still in the brigade but not
as Chief.
It was in February 1990 Shane joined the Maketu Brigade. It was called Rural Fire then,
changing to the Fire Service in 1995, and is now the Voluntary Fire Brigade.
He has had a long and illustrious time in the brigade. In that time, he has received the Gold
Star for 25 years’ service, 2 long service and good conduct medals and was nominated for the pride of New Zealand
for Fire Brigade, as well as receiving the Queens Service Medal for Fire Brigade in 2016.
When asked about his memorable moments Shane replied ‘There are many memorable moments but the most defin-
ing uplifting and humbling memories are those of building strong comradery where everyone becomes part of the
family. You have to rely on others strongly so you form strong bonds’. He is referring to the brigade members. His
memorable time in the community is “being able to help, you can’t help but feel for the people”.
Shane is still on the Maketu Community Board & Coastguard as well as running the Beech Holiday Camp.
His long-term vision is local politics. “If you want change you can’t sit on the outside.”
Mmm watch this space but in the meantime Shane now joins that illustrious group of past Fire Chiefs such as Noel
Pearce, Nicky Wallace & Butch Waterhouse. Many thanks to you all.

Working Bee – 4th December 2016
Few weeks before work started on the Whare Nui in
March last year, everything inside the Whare Nui was
either moved into the Marae garage or put in the side
rooms off the dining room for safe keeping. The Work-
ing Bee was the chance to say “goodbye” to items that
were ‘just too tired to carry on’, to put the furniture and
fittings back in the Whare Nui, and leave the surplus
items in the Marae garage. A big mihi to everyone who
helped on the day, and to the aunties for their yummy
‘cuppa tea’!
Annual Insurance for Whakaue Marae
Since 2013, the Whare Nui has only been insured for
‘Indemnity Value ranging between $43 - $47k. The low
insurance came about after the 2010/2011 Christchurch
earthquake, and because the Whare Nui was built before
1935. Prior to 2013, the Whare Nui was insured at a
Replacement Value of $315k. In November, last year
Telfer Young completed an ‘insurance valuation’ of
Whakaue Marae buildings and grounds, and took into
consideration the recent work completed on the Whare
Nui. Whakaue Marae Committee has been advised that
the Whare Nui will be insured at Replacement Value of
$490k.
Just recently, Jim Schuster from Toi Ora Associates
completed an ‘insurance valuation’ of the whakairo and
kowhaiwhai panels. The Toi Ora Associates’ valuation
will be sent to the Insurers for review, who in turn will
advise Whakaue Marae Committee of the ‘new’ annual
insurance amount next month.
Don’t forget to let us know if…
You see any chairs that are comfortable, desirable,
stackable, durable, affordable, and lift-able on your
travels please whanau, because we’re looking to buy
new chairs for the Whare Nui (i.e. replace the former
grey chairs and the black pews).

Maketu Taiapure Most days over the summer I have been recording water information at 5 sites in the estu-
ary. Readings have been taken between 1-2 hours after low tide (as per Te Puke Times)
and at a depth of 50cm – 80cm. The object of the exercise is to build up a data base so that
we can track any changes once more fresh water is diverted from the Kaituna River
through Maketu estuary, hopefully in 2016. To date recordings show:
The highest water temperature of 30.7 was at site E on 18/1/15
The lowest water temperature of 19.1 was at site A on 28/12/14
The average water temperature since the beginning of December to date is 25.38
I am also recording oxygen and salinity.

Kaituna River
Re-Diversion Update
Work to shift power and waterlines is now underway, in preparation for next summer’s main construction works to
create a new channel and stopbank. From late March this year, Regional Council staff will be re-contouring Papahi-
kahawai Island’s southern shoreline which will then be re-planted with native plants. They’ll also be removing two
causeways blocking Papahikahawai Creek to allow flushing and re-connection of 13 hectares of the upper estuary to
the sea. At the same time, contractors will build a wooden foot/ATV bridge to Maketū Spit to reinstate access for
the owners of Papahikahawai.
The main Kaituna River re-diversion and Te Awa o Ngatoroirangi/Maketū Estuary enhancement construction
works are still scheduled to start in September this year, pending funding decisions to be made in autumn. A public
meeting to update interested community members on the project will be held at 5:00pm on Tuesday January 31 at
Maketū Fire Station, all are welcome to attend.
Further planting and restoration work on Papahikahawai Island is planned for autumn/winter. This is part of a joint
project between Papahikahawai No. 1 and 2 Trust, Bay of Plenty Regional Council and Nga Whenua Rāhui. Te
Runanga o Ngati Whakaue ki Maketū and local community volunteers are assisting with the project which will see
more than 50,000 native plants planted across nearly 15 hectares of Papahikahawai Island in the next ten years.

Western Bay Benefits from Broadband Rollout
Katikati, Maketu, Paengaroa, Te Puke, Omokoroa, Te
Puna and Waihi Beach will all benefit from ultra-fast
broadband (UFB) rollout announcements.
Chorus has announced it has reached an agreement with
Crown Fibre Holdings to extend its ultra-fast broadband
(UFB) rollout to a further 169 areas nationwide, includ-
ing Maketu, Paengaroa, Te Puna and Waihi Beach in the
Western Bay.
Hamilton-based Ultrafast Fibre (UFF) will roll out ultra-
fast broadband to the other three Western Bay areas to
benefit - Katikati, Te Puke and Omokoroa.
Western Bay Mayor Garry Webber says today’s an-
nouncements are great news and reward for work that
Council staff and Councillors have been doing to create a
Digital Enablement Plan for the District over the past
two-three years.
"We are absolutely delighted that our towns have been
selected for the next rollout stage of the nationwide Ultra
Fast Broadband (UFB) Project.
“In this day and age UFB is a fundamental part of every-
day way of life, but for our predominantly small town
and rural communities, it really helps with global con-
nectivity. As the New Zealand economy is still primarily
agricultural and horticultural, the many businesses we
have behind the hedgerow UFB is a must-have for their
businesses."
Today’s announcement by Chorus will see an ultra-fast
broadband (UFB) rollout to a further 169 areas extending
from Taipa–Mangonui in Northland to Bluff in South-
land. This will make fibre available to an additional
200,000-plus homes and businesses beyond the 1.1 mil-
lion customers in Chorus’ existing UFB rollout areas.
Chorus CEO Mark Ratcliffe said Chorus was delighted
to be working with the Government to extend the reach
of fibre broadband to so many new communities.
“Fibre is undoubtedly the future of broadband. In the five
and a half years that we’ve been building the UFB net-
work and connecting homes and businesses to fibre
we’ve seen a huge upsurge in demand.
“We’re particularly pleased to see many of the towns and
areas soon to benefit from fibre are within the Govern-
ment’s Regional Growth Programme, helping to increase
jobs, income and investment in regional New Zealand.
Ultrafast Fibre is owned through WEL Networks Ltd and
Waipa Networks Ltd. UFF Chief Executive, William
Hamilton says the expanded network footprint – which
will reach a further 22,790 homes and businesses over
the next few years – is eagerly anticipated by these com-
munities and the Retail Service Providers who will offer
them fibre broadband services.
“We know smaller centres are very keen to access the
same high-speed communication infrastructure as the big
cities already do. Along with our partners, we are de-
lighted to be recognised for our achievements to date and
to now continue playing such an important part in ex-
panding access to this fantastic opportunity for New Zea-
landers,” says Mr Hamilton.
The Western Bay rollout is timed to occur between 2018-
2022.
A list of the areas to benefit from today’s announcement
and timings can be found here https://

Fire permits are once again on the table for the Western Bay of Plenty following a bout of rain in recent days.
Pumicelands Rural Fire Authority has resumed issuing fire permits in the Western Bay and rural Tauranga from 26
January.
Applications will be approved on a case to case basis, says Zone Manager Alan Pearce.
He says the fire risk has lowered enough since last weekend when fire crews were busy at several incidents.
Alan is asking everyone to be aware much of the sub-region is still very dry and windy conditions can heighten the
risk.
“Please take extreme care when lighting fires and make sure you obey any instructions on your permit.”
A total fire ban is in place for Waihi Beach and will remain for the time being.
Alan is happy to discuss matters relating to open air fires and can be contacted on 07 571 8008.
To keep updated on fire permit conditions and for more information visit http://pumicelands.co.nz

KOTUKUTUKU GULLY
Celebration time is over, we trust you had a good festive season. Prior to Christ-
mas, we held a “Thank you” morning tea for Trevor and Ruth, and the Gully origi-
nals presented them with a bird house for their new garden in Te Puke. There was
a good turn out from the local community as well as from the Council, and thanks
are due to the Surf Club, for providing the use of their facilities and tea and coffee
for the last minute change of venue; and to those who provided a plate for the
event, as well as those contributing their organising skills.
Once again, the Gully crew have settled back in to the ongoing maintenance, alt-
hough with a couple of the crew out of action because of ill health, if there are any
volunteers who can use a weedeater, or don’t mind hand weeding, and would be
willing to lend a hand on a regular or occasional basis could they please give either
Jim (phone 5332233) or Trevor (phone 5733998) a call.
On Saturday 25th February, we are planning a working bee at the Gully with the help of Rotary, to clear
some of the vines and weeds that have grown exceptionally well in the past month or two. Anyone in the commu-
nity willing to help will be welcome, start time 9 am. Please bring your own hand tool such as weed grubbers or
secateurs, for cutting vines and weeds, and a drink /snack for morning tea.
Any enquiries ring either of the two numbers above. That’s it for the month, enjoy your walks and take care all,

I am a resident of Maketu, I live on Wilson Road
North. On the 3 January 2017 after picking up a bottle of
milk at the Maketu Landing I decided to take a leisurely
drive, the long way home. I drove up Little Waihi Road
and at the intersection I turned right onto Arawa Ave. As
I drove past the Bledisloe Park Ave turnoff I could see
whiteware dumped on the side of the road. As I ap-
proached the intersection of Arawa Ave and Wilson
Road
North there I saw more whiteware dumped. I did ring
0800TRASHY who had already been made aware of the
dumping at Arawa Ave by the gumtrees but they were
not aware of the whiteware dumped at the intersection of
Arawa Ave and Wilson Road North.
Would you place an article in the next Mai Maketu news-
letter to make readers aware of the services our Te Puke
recycling centre offer whiteware included. All other
household items should be taken to a transfer station at
