Welcome to your November edition of your Hucclecote Link.
Its that time of year again, and when you receive this, the clocks will be about to go back,
and it will start to feel as though Winter is now approaching.
With the darker mornings and dark evenings - now’s the time when the heating starts to get
put back on (if it hasn’t already!) We have some great plumbers in the Hucclecote Link and
many of them have some great offers on, so why wait, give them a call now and see what
they can do for you. You can find out who they are on our index on page 30.

mas and all the planning and preparation.
If bikes are on the Christmas list this year - Slam 69 in on
our doorstep and is a great local family bike shop - see

Lane, Barnwood, on Saturday 3rd November 10.30-2.30 -
kids are welcome too, with face painting and other activities
- you will also be helping raise money for a great local
cause. See more details on page 26.
If you have already booked your Christmas nights out, but

Dave’s top tips Replacing Damaged floor tiles
As hard as floor tiles appear to be, they can on occasion get damaged with either a chip or
crack and need to be replaced. Whenever buying tiles we always recommend getting a few
extra as in a short time you may find they soon become obsolete.
The first stage to remove the damaged tile is to carefully knock out the old tile from the mid-
dle to the edges with a hammer and chisel. (not forgetting safety gloves and glasses) Then
completely remove the adhesive residues and grout. Using an electric scraper is a quick and
easy method of doing this but a manual scraper will do the job just as well. Once the surface
is cleaned, new tile adhesive is applied using a small notched trowel.
Now press the new tile into the adhesive bed and line it up. After the specified drying time,
grout the joints and leave them to dry. Finally, remove the remaining grout with a damp
sponge before it fully sets.
Should you need to make the joints look "old", simply rub some dirt into the dry joints until
they are roughly the same colour as the neighboring joints.
Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top tips along with
some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills Regards
Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you.

Gardening Tips for November from Garden Delight.. Flowers, Tubs and Borders Finish planting out spring bulbs, November is an especially good month to plant Lilies
and Tulips, in both cases if you have a heavy soil put a little coarse grit in the bottom of
the planting hole to aid drainage.
Plant deciduous hedges such as beech and hawthorn.
Trim over your summer flowering heathers, removing the old flower stems keeps them
compact and will encourage fresh new growth next spring and stop the plants becom-
ing woody.
Plant up a few Paperwhite Narcissi in pots to bring inside to flower for Christmas.
Take hardwood cuttings of shrubs.
Lawns You will most likely need to make the final cut of the year, make sure the blades on the
mower are set high and the grass is dry when you cut.
If it’s not too wet or cold you can carry on laying turf until the end of the month.
Fruit and Vegetables Harvest and store late varieties of Apples and Pears.
Plant ‘soft’ fruit’ this month for cropping next summer. November is the right
month to buy and plant Raspberry canes, Blackcurrants, Redcurrants and Gooseberries.
Protect Cauliflower ‘curds’ by bending a few leaves over the centre. Leeks and
Parsnips can be left in the ground until required for use; the flavour will improve after
the first frost.
Bring in some roots of Chives, Mint and Parsley pot up and grow on the kitchen
window sill for fresh foliage all winter.
Sow Aquadulce Claudia Broad Beans to over winter and gain a head start to har-
vest next June.
Plant out Garlic bulbs by the end of the month, they like a fertile well drained
sunny position.
Greenhouse Check greenhouse daily opening vents on sunny days to regulate the temperature
and increasing ventilation to cut down on pest and disease. But make sure to close up
on frosty nights and check insulation is in order for when it gets really cold.
When watering avoid splashing on leaves as this can cause mildew and other
fungal diseases.
Plant of the month – Viburnum bodnantense ‘Dawn’- larger growing shrub, upright
in habit reaching 2.5 metres in height. Clusters of highly scented flowers cover the
plant November- February. Ideal for the back of the border where its dark green purple
tinged foliage provide a great back drop for spring and summer flowering shrubs, the
shrub then comes into its own during the winter months when the masses of flowers
brighten up any garden. Easy to grow but prune back after flowering to keep compact
and under control.

At the September meeting of Hucclecote TG, we welcomed Carol Stafford, of ‘Sugar Celebra-tions’(shops in Gloucester and Swindon), who gave us a very informative talk and demonstration of icing and decorating fruit cakes with some really good tips, just in time for our Christmas cakes to benefit! We were advised to use icing sugar for rolling out marzipan, and to brush the cake with sherry rather than jam, before laying the marzipan on the cake, as it is safer and also enriches the cake; for rolling out fondant icing a thin covering of cornflour on the board is helpful; other tips
included placing a thin sausage shaped rope of marzipan around the bottom of upturned cake to fill in the gap before icing, and ‘crimping’ around base and top of iced cake to avoid piping a decora-
tion, all looking so easy to do by a very experienced cake decorator!
The November meeting of HTG has had to be rearranged to take place on Thursday No-vember 1st. at 7-30pm at Hucclecote Community Centre, instead of 15th November and will be an illustrated talk by Peter Berry entitled ‘Khyber or Bust’.All members and visitors will be made wel-
come. Sales Table will be; Items for Autumn Fayre. Saturday November 24th from 10-0am to 11-30am is the day of Hucclecote TG’s Autumn Fayre which will take place at Hucclecote Community Centre as usual. There will be a Grand Raffle, and stalls comprising ; Cakes ;Books and Puzzles; Cards and Crafts, Bric a Brac and refreshments will be served- a good opportunity to start or continue our Christmas shopping, and enjoy a coffee and
chat! Everyone welcome.
Hucclecote Horticultural Society What a joy our September meeting was. The Biggs father and son team from Wanborough
Nurseries enlivened our evening with a fascinating talk about herbs and their uses. As a non-
herb person myself, I ended up buying quite a number for the patio pots. One was a tange-
rine sage – ever heard of that? It can be used for jellies and cakes, so should be put to good
use.
By the time you read this, we will have had our Members’ evening, when I shall be looking
forward to swapping some of my seeds for some [hopefully better] ones brought in by other
members, as well as getting the answers to all the questions I have about things not growing.
For our November meeting, on Thursday 22nd, we will be entertaining another speaker from
a nursery – this time Wheeler’s Nursery - when I anticipate that ideas for Christmas and then
for activity in the New Year will be in abundance.
In December we take a break, resuming in January with a welcome visit from Julie Ritchie of
Hoo House nurseries, following up on our visit there during 2011, and talking to us about
having perennials throughout the year.
All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, and start at 7.30 pm. All are wel-
come: attendance and membership are not restricted to Hucclecote residents. More infor-
mation from Chris on 610694.

St Philip and St James Church 'Scared of the dark?
One of the fears that adults have occasionally shared with me is a fear of the dark. It is quite a sur-
prise just how many people dislike the autumn and the wintry months because the nights are long
and darkness seems to prevail. Not that long ago a very senior citizen shared with me her general
disdain for autumnal November, noisy fireworks and the beginnings of winter. I wonder how she
would fare in the extreme northern hemisphere where it can go dark for several weeks at a time?
One of the most powerful descriptions of Jesus is as ‘the light of the world, a light no darkness can
quench’. That statement is such a useful reminder that no matter how dark our lives, our mood, or
the approaching winter, nothing can extinguish his light and his love.
This autumn why not enter into the darkness with a bright shining torch that can illuminate any
darkness and bring comfort in place of fear. As the nights darken look again at the beauty of the
trees in autumnal colour and see this time as vital preparation for a long summer to come
(hopefully!). There is no darkness that God’s light and love cannot penetrate and there is nothing to
fear that you cannot face with Jesus the light of the world.
Revd Andrew Axon, St Philip and St James Church, Larkhay Road'
