Amy Bould takes a look at cities perfect for love and romantic getaways for two

Locked in love…s far as romantic gestures go, the italians probably have it covered. In Naples, heavy chains

and padlocks are attached to bridges – a sign that a young couple in love have symbolically joined together before literally throwing the key into the water below.

Although railings and lampposts in Italy are now groaning under the weight of excess metal, no-one can deny that as an all out demonstration of eternal love, it beats a bunch of flowers or a box of chocolates.

Having said all that, Naples isn’t perhaps the most romantic place for star-crossed lovers but here’s our guide to where is...starting with an island less than an hour away from the padlocks on the water’s edge.

Hop on a speedboat or the hydrofoil (less romantic, but quicker than the ferry) and head to the sun-soaked isle of Capri, a perfect mini-break destination with plenty of hideaways to drop anchor in secluded coves. One of the top places to stay is the Capri Palace (www.capri-palace.com), a favourite of celebrity couples, offering privacy and indulgence for star-crossed lovers.

Next up is one of the most romantic journeys in the world, on the Orient-Express (www.orient-express.com), where couples can board the world’ most famous train to travel to some of Europe’s most evocative destinations. The celebrated Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, linking London,

Paris and Venice, combines romance, adventure and style in tours which criss-cross Europe with guests combining the trip with a stay in luxury hotels.

And what could be more romantic than dinner for two on a deserted island? Located on the tip of South Malé Atoll in the Maldives, Olhuveli Beach & Spa Resort is perfect for an idyllic break. Olhuveli (www.olhuvelimaldives.com) can arrange for couples wanting an exclusive island experience to visit neighbouring Dream Island for an evening of decadent dining. A short boat ride away, or even accessible by canoe (the resort has doubles for couples), guests can hunt for exotic seashells on the beach, explore the lush, green interior or even find a quiet spot for a bit of private sunbathing!

We know it’s a cliché, but Paris isn’t known as the ‘city of love’ for nothing. A perfect getaway for a weekend break, by air, sea or rail on the Eurostar. Paris offers couples the chance to walk hand in hand alongside the banks of the Seine, moonlit trips up the Eiffel Tour and plenty of gastronomic delight. For those lovers planning to drop down on one knee this year, www.proposeinparis.com can offer up to 30 romantic scenarios, including the chance to pop the question aboard a private yacht while 1,000 roses drop from the sky.

Although with its hustle and bustle, the Big Apple might not be in the top five romantic cities in the world, it can hold its own thanks to iconic locations featured in a host cinematic rom-coms. Just think of the famous NyC scenes including Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in Sleepless in Seattle, Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffanys, and Diane Keaton in Annie Hall. From a carriage ride in Central Park to a proposal on the top of the Empire State Building, New york has much to offer lovers including a sunset trip to see the Statue of Liberty.

A

And ladies, don’t forget, 2012 is a leap year so dig out the suitcases – it’s traditionally the time when you can surprise him with more than just a romantic getaway for two.

ebruary sees Telford Tigers continue their push for an end of season play off place with games at home on Sunday 5th against the

Peterborough Phantoms and on Sunday 19th against the Slough Jets, with both games facing off at 5.30pm. Tigers also face tough away games at Bracknell Bees, Manchester Phoenix, Peterborough Phantoms and Swindon Wildcats, and having already achieved away wins at Guildford Flames, Sheffield Steeldogs, Bracknell Bees, Basingstoke Bison and Peterborough the chance of a play off spot is still there for the taking.

Over the last month Tigers have added two new players to the team roster, with forwards Henrik Sahlin joining from Bristol Bulldogs in the English National League and Tom Castle from Hartford Juniors in America. These two additions will strengthen Tigers roster as they head into the second half of the season, and with the transfer window drawing to a close at the end of January another signing has not been ruled out. Tigers player coach Tom Watkins said, “I would like to add another body, certainly to the forwards, I just keep my ears to the ground and see if there is anyone available.”

If you’ve not been to see a game yet, or seen the new film Goon and enjoyed it come along and watch the fastest team sport in the world live, full of fast paced action and goals played in a family friendly environment. review

Rive is a dark thriller starring Ryan gosling as a

quiet Hollywood stunt driver, loyal mechanic, and part-time getaway specialist who, after being the wheelman in a heist gone wrong, has to fight for himself and the people around him as the local mobsters come to exact their revenge.

The opening scene introduces our anonymous anti-hero as he lays down his strict rules to two burglars, helping them evade police with his cool and calm demeanor with fast and precision driving. We follow “The Driver” as he helps his quiet and somewhat hesitant neighbor, Irene, – played by Carey Mulligan – after her car breaks down, befriending the mother and her son. After her husband arrives home from prison, he learns that a debt is owed to local mobsters, and, through obligation of friendship to the man’s family, he agrees to help with a dangerous heist.

The short-notice and hastily planned job is against ‘The Driver’s’ better instincts, and after a tension-filled and fatal robbery, the subsequent car chase is simple, intense and direct – three qualities which are mirrored in not only the main character but the movie as a whole.

The final act of the movie is all about revenge. The mobsters want their money back and tie up loose ends and our protagonist, although initially simply wanting out of the dire and worsening situation, is obliged to protect his new friends and avenge their loss. What unfolds is an ominously well-paced finalé, infused with gruesome outbursts of violence, and culminating in a self-sacrificial and equivocal ending.

Drive is not your typical Hollywood heist movie. It is character-driven, full of nuances, somber and, in places, extremely brutal. Ryan Gosling gives a stunning performance and is backed up by the ever impressive Carey Mulligan, even if she is somewhat sedate in this particular role. It’s an unusual cocktail: there is plenty of tension, with a slice of action and modern stylish look, contrasting with the undeniable ‘80s soundtrack, the harrowing hero and open-ended conclusion.

if it aint broke, don’t fix it. The iPhone 4S builds on what is an already capable (arguably class-leading) platform to deliver yet another leap forward in performance and usability. Apple have worked hard to improve on areas of perceived ‘weakness’ (camera, receiver, battery life) to create a more impressive and usable phone rather than starting from scratch with an iPhone 5 (of which there are unconfirmed rumours of a mid-2012 launch).

With impressive software updates made available for iPhone 3 and 4, Apple have ensured great longevity for these amazing phones, so they’ll always be a smart purchase whichever model you choose. is still the pick of the bunch? For us, yes.

hese are the first official pictures of vauxhall’s new small Suv, which will take the company into new market territory when it’s unveiled at this year’s

Geneva Motor Show in March.Called the Mokka, the new model will enter the growing

sub-compact SUV B-segment. The Mokka is 4.28metres long, yet despite its neat dimensions can accommodate five adults in comfort.

“The Mokka takes its design cues from larger SUVs and integrates them into a compact, yet modern form,” said Duncan Aldred, Vauxhall’s Chairman and Managing Director. “We are growing a compelling and diverse range of products that appeal both to retail and fleet customers, and the Mokka will complement this perfectly.”» Choice of diesel & petrol engines; packed with technology

The Vauxhall Mokka blends functionality with a comfortable high seating position. It can be specified with all-wheel drive that seamlessly shifts torque to the rear wheels when required for better traction and handling. Power is provided by three efficient engines, all equipped with fuel saving Start/Stop technology. The petrol offer comprises a 115PS, 1.6-litre naturally-aspirated engine or a 140PS 1.4-litre Turbo with 200Nm of torque. The diesel is a 130PS 1.7 CDTI turbo with 300Nm of torque. Both the 1.4 Turbo and the 1.7 CDTI can be combined either with six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions.

The Mokka introduces new cutting edge technologies to the SUV B-segment, such as a string of Driver Assistance Systems

at the hub of which is the Vauxhall Front Camera-there is also a rear view camera. In addition to a generous cargo volume, the Mokka offers the fully integrated, latest generation Flex-Fix bicycle carrier that is exclusive to Vauxhall. The user-friendly carrier is fully integrated in the rear underbody, functioning like a drawer and accommodating up to three bicycles at a time.» all-Wheel drive, Front-Wheel drive and exclusive technologies are available

Standard features that enhance the driving experience across all models include Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control (TC) as well as Hill Start Assist (HAS) and Hill Descent Control (HDC ) systems – which improve driving comfort and safety in uphill or downhill terrain.

hub Magazine’s Jo Gadsby discovers why green fields farm shop, quackers play barn and lakeside plant centre are well worth a visit.

…at telford’s hidden Secret!Eat, play & Shop…26 Food & drink priorslee feature

riving along the main A4640 from junction 4 of the M54 to Priorslee, Donnington and Muxton it’s easy to

miss the Lakeside Plant centre complex hidden away behind the bank – but a quick turn right into Salisbury Avenue reveals one of Telford’s best kept secrets, with something to keep the entire family entertained.

as well as the family run garden centre, which sells a variety of plants and garden accessories, there are some unexpected surprises, too.

How about an animal rescue centre for starters? Popular with schools and families, children will love feeding the furry friends including wallabies, guinea pigs, rabbits, pigmy goats, chickens and ducks.

Children will also love Quackers play barn (open 10am to 6pm) and located just behind the garden centre in Woodhouse Lane. Opened two years ago it provides a warm, friendly and safe environment for children to play in while parents relax with a drink in the café.

Reasonably priced with a range of deals, your young ones will have hours of endless fun on the slides and in the ball pit.

The new Green Fields store: same friendly service and

Page 27: Hub Magazine - Issue 2

» In October the complex added another exciting element to its offering.

green Fields farm shop in donnington is well known in the area and has been established for the last twenty-one years (it celebrated its birthday in July). In October they opened a second branch next to the Lakeside Plant Centre. The new Priorslee branch has got off to a flying start attracting new customers from the immediate area, as well as Shifnal and albrighton.

anyone who’s shopped at green Fields won’t be surprised at the expansion. With an abundance of fresh local produce from everyday essentials to culinary luxuries. They also operate a very popular ‘veggie box’ scheme which delivers fresh, seasonal vegetables straight to your door each week. If you haven’t tried a box yet, you can get your first one half price.

green Fields is passionate about quality local food. In fact 90% of the produce at green Fields comes from within a 50 miles radius with a good proportion of that sourced much closer to home.

If you love shopping at monthly farmer’s markets, you’ll love shopping at green Fields with many of the producers who go to market available 7 days a week at green Fields. They are open till 6pm Monday to Friday too making it easy to shop on the way home after work.

Popular brands include meats from Wenlock edge, Cooper’s gourmet sausage rolls and a new line gregory’s, producers of the flavourful Shropshire Pot Soups; but these are just three out of the hundreds of local products the store stocks.

So if you driving along the a4640 from the M54 don’t forget to take that right hand turn.

RaF Museum Model Making (Half Term)

If you’re looking for something exciting to entertain the children this February Half Term (13th to 17th February 2012), the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford is inviting families to participate in a fun model making activity. Taking place from Monday 13th to Friday 17th February, visitors will have the opportunity to build an Airfix 1:72 Spitfire.

Models will be built alongside the full sized aircraft on display at the Museum in a communal and fun atmosphere. you don’t have to be a skilled modeller to take part as staff will be there to lend a hand and to ensure visitors get the most from their modelling. Plus, if you need a little inspiration as to how to paint your model Spitfire, sessions will be taking place next to the famous 1:1 scale model Spitfire built by James May for the BBC Toy Stories series.

RAF Museum Cosford Events Executive, Nina Mitchell says: “All in all, this half term event promises to be a great day out for the whole family. Plus all modellers will get to take their collectable Airfix model Spitfire home as a memento of the day.”

The model making activity will be taking place in the Museum’s Hangar 1 and sessions will run from 11.00am to 4.00pm each day. Participation is just £3.00 per person and all materials including glue, paints and brushes will be provided by the Museum. Tickets are available on the day from the Admissions Desk.

n an ambitious regeneration project, the 6,000 sq ft. space in Hadley park east overlooking The Wrekin is being

transformed into an open plan, design-led haven for entrepreneurs, freelancers and independent creatives. The project is based on hub working, a revolutionary

concept that provides freelancers and companies with an exciting alternative to the isolated humdrum of home business or the disconnection of working mobile or in isolated offices. At Telford Enterprise Hub, entrepreneurs can focus

on doing what they do best: doing great business. One of the ‘tag lines’ for the Hub is ‘you run your business while we run the office’.With incredible views over open countryside on

the site of the former Hadley Park Farm, Telford Enterprise Hub offers ‘pay as you go’ co-working areas, deskpod rentals & office and studio spaces. For those looking to really impress their clients, the Skype Meeting Room provides entrepreneurs with opulent surroundings for pitch-winning meetings. But it’s not just an office. Telford Enterprise Hub is

a place where the two most incompatible of human elements - productivity and creativity – come together. This landmark work hub boasts a host of facilities

that will help put local entrepreneurs on the path to business success. A photographic studio for professional web and eBay images, a fully equipped catering kitchen, a Twitter wall for up to the minute global communications and an Apple Studio for in house web services and showing off those creative productions. From a business perspective, Telford Urban Hub

supplies business owners with the backdrop of a luxury work and meeting base and the opportunity for networking is limitless. Co-workers will be able to gain work they never even knew existed, be that from passing work between each other within the hub or using their collective power to win contracts that couldn’t have been achieved single handed. Telford Enterprise Hub will also act as a showcase for the local entrepreneurs’ goods and services, promoting them on and off line and to domestic and overseas markets. The tiered pricing scheme means that owner/

operators can choose the solution which is best for their business and their budget, but even the most expensive rental package is cheaper than renting a small stand alone office. Everyone has access to all the facilities, so by

working at Telford Enterprise Hub, anyone can instantly expand their business with a whole array of new technology, meeting space and service areas which they may otherwise not be able to afford. At the heart of the project are the property owners,

Graham and Jenny Wynn who have backed this unique concept to help in the regeneration efforts

for the Borough of Telford & Wrekin. Fay Easton is managing the project and understands the needs of local entrepreneurs, having operated hubs and networks across Shropshire for the past five years. “It’s massively important to have a space that

inspires, encourages and supports the companies within to be able to grow and collaborate. It’s also vital for those businesses to have access to the technology and facilities that they need to run their businesses on a day to day basis. Telford Enterprise Hub will not only provide all of these things but a platform to promote local fledgling entrepreneurs too.”

We have established a theme for the space which is both chic and functional. The officepod spaces have been produced as ‘booth environments’ for privacy and efficiency but still connect to the wider collaborative space. The office spaces can be adapted in order to extend or reduce the space as required. The theme for the co-working area is ‘inspiration’ using natural light to reduce cortisol levels and manage any anxiety whilst releasing serotonin that helps concentration. The colours of wealth are used with contemporary style and motivational quotes adorn the walls.Telford Enterprise Hub will officially open its new,

big red doors on Wednesday 18th April and a celebratory event is planned with tickets available for advance booking now. All proceeds from ticket sales will be spent on supporting new young businesses in Telford & Wrekin.

urely using a site with such a professional attitude and tone can only be a good thing?

But following on from last month’s column it seems the internet presence we choose is even more complicated than it might at first seem.

The most innocent of actions, and even those positive and proactive messages, can have far-reaching consequences.

At Bennett’s Legal we like to think we are ahead of the game and in this case we were and still are. We have been urging employers and employees for more than two years to take this issue seriously and now a new ground-breaking case is about to make it impossible to ignore.

you would think that placing a CV on a site such as LinkedIn, which is aimed at encouraging professionals and businesses to network, would do nothing but good for the ambitious and determined among us? And ticking the box to say interested in “career opportunities” is also more of a step in the right direction than a possible means of sabotaging your employment status.

But John Flexman is now regretting his decision to be among them. His employers didn’t take too kindly to their employee casting his net further afield and dismissed him from his post as a human resources executive.

He is now involved in the first industrial tribunal of its kind after bringing a case of constructive dismissal against them.

The case has made headlines around the world and as millions ponder their future job prospects they would be forgiven for are now asking if LinkedIn is no longer the way to go.

But let’s not rush our judgment before we hear what happens in the case. In essence the situation is that each case will be viewed on its merits – does the employee go too far? If so then the risk is that dismissal or discipline is justified. However, context is everything – that includes when the information was added. Is the employee actively looking at the time or could the information potentially be out of date? While we may all be feeling confused at what it all means, this case is

useful in that it will focus attention for both employers and employees on an area in need of some clearer definition.

What we can say is that the case has raised the issue of how we conduct ourselves online and also how it has implications for both workers and employers. It is interesting also that we must look at all online sites regardless of their origins or purpose.

Is Mr Flexman’s open and honest approach to his willingness to explore other avenues of employment sufficient grounds for a dismissal? It could be, or perhaps the employers will have taken it a step too far. We shall see.

But if employers want to take this stance then they need to think about it now and avoid having to shut the gate after the horse has bolted, as is the case in Mr Flexman’s situation.

It is important to take the time to look in detail at what we can all do to minimise such cases in the future. There is a means here to protect both employers and employees. In the current climate it is even more important to work closely with workers and their employers to try and avoid any unnecessary job losses.

All kinds of social networking can boost your business and bring in customers and can motivate workers to want to achieve even more in their role. It can also boost career prospects and can be a fantastic way to explore all kinds of new opportunities.

But now more than ever people need a plan - particularly employers. The fundamental consideration is that rules must be clear. We recommend a straightforward way to protect all those involved. Companies certainly should create a social media policy and carry that through with social media training for staff. If the position is clarified in rules which are set out openly and carried through, the position becomes clearer and disputes like the reported case are greatly reduced.

lans submitted by Telford & Wrekin Council for a £2.3m regeneration of Hadley, which will include the building of a new Tesco Express

food store, were recently approved at Plans Board. The council has been working closely with Hadley &

Leegomery Parish Council and local residents to develop the scheme for the centre to bring about much needed regeneration.

On Wednesday, both the detailed application for a mixed use commercial development, and the outline application for a residential development were approved.

Funding for Phase One has already been approved; plans include the demolition of a number of shops and maisonettes. These are to be replaced by six new shops and a Tesco Express food store. Phase Two, subject to further funding, will include a further three mixed use units and 24 new homes.

Now these proposals have been approved Hadley will have a well located, modern shopping provision to serve the local community.

Plans can now be begin on preparing the site and demolition works should begin in June 2012 with a 12 month construction phase to commence in the summer, aiming for opening by autumn 2013. All commercial units within Phase Two (charity shop, pharmacy, veterinary practice, Wrekin Housing Trust office, martial arts centre and Post Office) will continue to trade as usual.

Some preliminary preparation works, including necessary tree felling, has now commenced.

Councillor Richard Overton, cabinet member for Borough Towns Development and Policy, said: “This is an exciting development for people living in Hadley and is a much needed regeneration scheme.

“Now that the planning applications have been approved, work can begin to drive this regeneration forward.”

Councillor Malcolm Smith, Chairman of Hadley and Leegomery Parish Council, said: “The Parish Council is very pleased that the plans have been approved and we look forward to seeing this much needed regeneration begin in a few months time. we will continue to work in partnership with Telford & wrekin Council to see this project through to delivery”.

The council is also in discussions with traders at the popular weekly market to ensure they continue to trade successfully.

Funding for the first phase of the scheme is currently in place but future phases is dependent upon additional funding.
