Book Your Christmas Party With Us!

Warmest greetings and best wishes for the new year!

When you walk into one of the Canadian Tire Norfolk stores this holiday season, you will find

more than just the usual great shopping going on. The Simcoe and Delhi stores have stepped up once again and are helping many local charities during this festive season.

The Shriners are back selling Christmas Cakes at Canadian Tire Simcoe. It is always wonderful to purchase a cake and help the Shriners help others. If that isn’t your piece of cake (ha, ha, ha)… you can support the Salvation Army by purchasing a gift and placing it in the Toy Donation Bin, going to the Children’s Wish Tree and helping with a purchase to bring a child a gift, or dropping off a few dollars at their Kettle Drive.

The Norfolk General Hospital (NGH) volunteer gift wrapping is a new feature which is located in the trailer just out front of the Simcoe store (thanks to Adventure RV for helping out). Take note guys, if you wrap like me, you need all the help you can get!

Canadian Tire Delhi is proud to be hosting the Delhi Toy & Food Drive Box!

As you can see there are lots of opportunities to help others at either of the Canadian Tire Norfolk stores this holiday season. Kudos to Mary Taylor and staff at the stores for always being involved in our community and making a difference!

FACT - In March 2015, 852,137 people received food from a food bank in Canada. More than one-third of those helped were children.

FACT - 358,963 people received food from a food bank in Ontario in March – 34% were children. Nearly one-third of households helped in the province live primarily on disability-related income supports.

In such a plentiful country as ours, it is hard to fathom that so many are going without food on a daily basis.

Fortunately, every year at this time, Canadians donate to the food banks, assisting those in need. Such is the case with the many businesses at 23 Market in Port Dover that are doing their part this holiday season. They started to fill an office with non-perishable food items and are inviting you to join in! Gary and Janet Hepburn, owners of the building, are again showing their community spirit and want to welcome folks to stop by 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. weekdays to drop off their donations. Gary explained that this was something all the businesses in the building were excited to do. The beneficiary from this will be the Lifeline Food Bank in Port Dover.

We have to mention the businesses at 23 Market leading the charge… R.E. Mann Brokers, WentWorth Financial Services, Millard Chartered Professional Accountants, the Twisted Fish Community Yoga & Wellness Centre, Brimage Law, Gold Coast Real Estate, Barber & Veri and Hub Media.

So folks, stop by and visit 23 Market in Port Dover, bring that non-perishable food item and help fill that office so others can eat throughout the holiday season.

There will be a 23 Market - Open House & Food Drive Thursday, December 10 from 4:00 to 7:00 – all are welcome!!

Community Spirit!

The Staff at Eising Greenhouses hope that you will have a Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year!

The poinsettia was named after Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first United States Minister to Mexico. He introduced this native Mexican plant to

the US in 1828. In the Mexican Christmas tradition, the star-shaped leaf pattern is said to symbolize the Star of Bethlehem, and the red colour represents the blood sacrifice through the crucifixion of Jesus.

Since the species is native to Mexico and found in the wild in deciduous tropical forest at moderate elevations, we then have a challenge to keep this plant alive and in a healthy form in our colder, northern climate.

Here are Some Helpful Hints: Your plant requires at least six hours of indirect sunlight

per day.Try to provide an environment between 16 to 18˚C (60 to

65˚F) and away from hot or cold drafts. The plant does not respond well to sudden changes in temperature.

Unsleeve the plant as soon as possible as the leaves may become droopy if left too long in the wrapper. Fortunately, the plant should recover in a few days if this does occur.

Water your plant thoroughly when it becomes dry to the

touch out of the pot cover and in a sink. Let it sit for a while after the watering as the poinsettia doesn’t like to be left in standing water.

If you want to try to keep your plant until next Christmas then fertilize after the blooming season with an all-purpose fertilizer, repot it later in the early summer and then introduce it to 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness come September.

It’s Just A RumourThere is a common misconception that the poinsettia is

highly toxic. This is not true.Yes it may be mildly irritating to the skin or the stomach if it

is eaten, but otherwise, there has been no documented cases of poisoning. The origin of this myth could be found in the fact that most plants of the spurge genus (Euphorbia) are indeed toxic. Fortunately, this family member is a good one! 814 CoCkshutt Road, simCoe,

Happy Holidays!

All the unanswered questions would now be answered. Would the many months of preparation be enough?

Jan Ryerse, supported by his crew of two, was about to find out as he attempted to conquer the Badwater 135 ultra race. It was 100˚F when the race began at 6 a.m. Jan ran at a 13 min/mile pace through to the first checkpoint at Furnace Creek (at 17 miles). It was 9:30 and the temperature was now 110˚F, with the sun well up in the sky. From there, he ran 3 minutes and walked 4 minutes, adapting when necessary so that hills did not have to be run. Right from the start he had taken an electrolyte cap and a GU gel every hour and continued to do that for the duration of the race. He also drank two 20 ounce bottles of fluid, one being water and one Succeed Ultra, every 25 minutes.

The next 25 miles to Stovepipe Wells (42 miles) is gently undulating road through the hottest part of the course. The temperature was 130˚F when he arrived at 4:00 p.m. By this time, he was putting a cold, wet towel over his head and shoulders and also tying on a fresh, ice-cold neck cooler every two miles. At the checkpoint, really feeling the heat, Jan lay down in the shade on the concrete porch in front of the store with ice-cold towels over him for 15 minutes. His crew wasn’t sure he would get back up. But he stretched out his back and then got going again, rejuvenated by four popsicles.

Next is a 17 mile ascent to Townes Pass, going up from sea level to an elevation of 3,600 feet. His friend Tom walked this section with him. For the first few miles of the climb, he stopped every two miles to sit and cool down his core body temperature with cold, wet towels. He was also eating various foods including grapes, cherries, pretzels, dates, p and j sandwiches, turkey and cheese sandwiches, cold canned fruit, yogurt and chocolate pudding. A steady wind was blowing 120˚F air straight down the road into their faces – similar to standing in front of a large, hot hair dryer. A full moon came over the mountains to the east

and flashlights were not necessary. They arrived at the top of the pass at 11:00 p.m. Jan lay down on the road on a towel for a few minutes to stretch his back again. Running shirtless and hatless in the dark felt really good as it had cooled down to 90˚F at the top (4,960 feet) but warmed up again during the descent to the valley floor.

As you drop down into the valley, you can see the lights of Panamint Springs (at 72 miles), with the road being a straight-line ribbon, but it takes several hours to get there. Arrival time at the checkpoint was 3:00 a.m. Many crews and some runners stop there for sleep as the resort provides a large room, but Jan pressed on for the ascent to Father Crowley’s Point at 80 miles (more than three marathons completed).

I asked Jan about sleeping but he simply said to me, “I don’t like to stop and sleep during events.”

The sun had come up by Father Crowley’s Point so they could marvel once again at the beauty of the mountains and the shadows in the deep valleys. In this section, a car came up beside Jan and Tom. A man with a camera jumped out and ran ahead snapping photos. They ran up a little hill trying to look good but when the man got back in the car and disappeared, they resumed walking.

Between 85 and 95 miles, Jan felt renewed energy and got in some good-quality running He passed several other runners and their crews, including the Badwater icon Marshall Ulrich. He was the race record holder and also, incredibly, had done the full course earlier in the summer as a self-supported solo trek pulling a rickshaw-style handcart with all his supplies.

After Darwin, at 90 miles, they came through a cut in the mountains and gradually descended from 5,000 to 3,000 feet. Fighter jets from Camp Pendleton, flying low on practice training, provided a nice distraction as they zoomed overhead with a deafening roar.

However, there are still 45 miles to go. Dead ahead is the

longest, straightest, black asphalt road Jan had ever seen. It just went on and on. This was a very difficult part of the race and he had to work hard to keep focused and to maintain relentless forward progress. Also, smoke from nearby forest fires was preventing them from seeing Mount Whitney. Jan just ran from one reflector post along the road to the next, then walked one, and repeated. He passed through 100 miles in 29 hours 27 minutes; there was still over 50 km to go. He kept running a couple of hundred metres, then walking a couple of hundred metres until, finally, he came to Lone Pine (122 miles) at 6:30 p.m. Tom was now in the van, sick to his stomach, so Jan would have to finish on his own.

Lone Pine is at 3,600 feet and there is a 4,700 foot climb over the next 12 miles. Jan still had good energy and determination. He alternated running with fast power walking. Of course, the climbing got tougher and tougher up the steep switchbacks until he was reduced to 30 minute miles.

At last, there is a final turn in the road and he could see the lights of the finish line. How wonderful that must have felt. When it was done, Jan simply sat and rested.

What an accomplishment! Jan had finished 7th male, 11th overall in 40 hours, 45 minutes.

It took five days before he could get his feet into street shoes as they were badly swollen. He also had a couple of serious blisters and did later lose his toenails, but everything else was fine – no pain in his legs, knees or hips.

He considers Badwater a tough but beautiful adventure. During the race he experienced two sunrises, two sunsets, three valleys to cross and three mountain ranges to climb. He got to look out at the high desert and the mountain passes in the daylight and in the moonlight. Jan told me he decided he would never go back because it could never be any better.

SENIOR SENSE

~ By Pat Grant

It is a Special SeasonYes, this month starts a special

season! Every season or time of year has 'specials' but this season

has more and more people are involved! This season has its very own greetings, music and activities such as parades, carnivals and concerts. There is also a theme that guides the season; a theme of giving. The giving is shown by the smiles and greetings to everyone, people one has never seen before and also to friends, neighbours and of course family!! There is also the giving to groups who look after those who are in need and the donations that we all make to the Salvation Army who look after people now and all year! This special season is a very busy time for many people as they do their best to help others enjoy this special season.

Many seniors are involved in helping others and for seniors it is also a special season for them. It is a time of memories and reflections of the many special seasons of the past that can be aroused by the senses. The senses of seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching!! And if asked for examples it is amazing to hear the stories! Stories like the smell of the turkey cooking and the sound of the group singing carols in the street; the stories can go on and on. This special season can prompt those wonderful memories of long ago that can be so vivid and when often seniors cannot remember where they put the house keys or what is the day of the week!!!

It is truly a special season!! Seasons Greetings!!!

It’s no secret that diabetes is on the rise in both adults and children.

People living with this disease face serious complications due to their blood sugar imbalance including heart disease, strokes, kidney problems, impaired vision and nerve damage. It is vital to take the necessary steps to prevent diabetes or manage it properly if you already have it.

About - Diabetes occurs when your body can’t produce any or enough insulin, a hormone that manages blood glucose (sugar).

Here’s how it normally works: When you eat, your blood sugar levels rise. Insulin helps lower your blood sugar by transferring it to three different places in your body: your liver, your muscles to use as fuel, and a small amount to cells for fat storage. There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 occurs when your immune system attacks the cells that produce insulin. Type 2 occurs when your body doesn’t produce enough insulin. Both types can raise the amount of sugar in your bloodstream to dangerously high levels, causing tissue and organ damage, so it’s important to get diagnosed and treated as soon as possible.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common. Even though it’s genetic, it’s most typically related to being overweight. Treatment usually involves weight loss, exercise and oral medications. Some people with type 2 diabetes will have to take insulin with or without pills to manage their blood sugar levels. People with type 1, however, will have to take insulin injections for the rest of their lives.

Diabetes doesn’t have a one-size-fits-all therapy. The way you manage your diabetes may need to be changed over time depending on your general health, how active you are, and whether you are showing signs of complications such as heart or kidney disease.

A Healthy Position - PrediabetesPrediabetes refers to blood sugar levels that are much higher

than normal, but not quite high enough to be considered full-blown diabetes. Nearly half of those with prediabetes will go on to develop type 2 diabetes, but that doesn’t mean that it’s inevitable.

The following lifestyle changes can help you bring your blood sugar levels back to normal.

Lose weight. It doesn’t have to be a lot. One study showed that moderate weight loss—an average of 12 pounds—reduced the odds of progression to diabetes by nearly 50 percent.

Get a move on. Because active muscles use insulin more efficiently, getting regular exercise can keep blood sugar from spiking after meals. Aim for about 2 hours of cardio and weight training a week.

Get more sleep. A study showed that getting less than 6 hours of shut-eye per week increased people’s blood sugar levels.

Know the signs of prediabetes. Since it can often sneak up on you, watch out for the symptoms of type 2 diabetes: extreme thirst, frequent thirst and blurred vision.

If you start to experience any of these symptoms regularly, tell your doctor and get a blood sugar test.

Harmony ~ Comfort ~ PeaceMay the gift of the season last throughout the year

It’s always nice to see what manufacturers have developed for the fishing and boating industries each year. We are going to highlight just a few of the items that

we are excited about.Minn Kota is now offering an optional 72” shaft on the Ulterra

112 with i-Pilot, Terrova 112 with i-Pilot, Terrova 80 with i-Pilot, Riptide Ulterra 112 with i-Pilot and Riptide Terrova 112 with i-Pilot. For boating anglers such as ourselves this is welcome news. Previously the longest shaft length available was 60”. With boats being much deeper now the prop could cavitate in rough seas. This resulted in momentary loss of boat control and excess prop noise. With the increased shaft length these issues are no longer the same issue and we can stay on structure much easier and wit a stealth approach.

New to the Revo lineup of spinning reels by Abu Garcia is the MGX. While this is a reel priced in the higher dollar range it has several features to substantiate its cost for the angler who is seeking a quality spinning reel. The machined gears provide unbelievable smoothness and durability. The reel features 11 stainless steel ball bearings as well as 1 roller bearing. Using carbon and magnesium alloy in its construction allows for a strong, significant light weight spinning reel.

Also from Abu Garcia is the lineup of Fantasista Regista rods

available in both casting and spinning models. These rods deliver the ultimate in sensitivity and fishability. The rods feature Fuji K guides which are suitable for braid, mono and fluorocarbon lines. But the best feature is these guides eliminate the line from tangling around the guide.

A new hard body crankbait that we are looking forward to fishing on Long Point Bay next year is the Berkley Pit Bull. This lure features a square bill which will allow us to bounce the bait off the bottom and structure without hanging up. It will dive to 5 ½ feet which will be perfect in the Inner Bay as well as pulling it down bars in the outer bay. The bonus is it will not blow out at high speeds. It also has an extraordinary 1 ½ foot wide wobble.

We like throwing lipless crankbaits for many fish species. Berkley has just released the War Pig which features a square nose. This allows this bait to bounce off cover much like a square billed crankbait. Remember to count lipless crankbaits down to get them to run at the depth the fish are at or the bottom.

For 2016 Berkley released 11 new hard body crankbaits so make sure you visit their website to check them all out.

The big news in the Berkley PowerBait lineup is the Shaky Snake. To say this soft bait has a unique profile is an understatement. It’s like 3 body styles molded into one bait. This bait has been designed to get that stubborn fish to commit to

taking the bait. A favourite standby fly reel of many fly anglers is the

Pflueger Medallist. For 2016 this reel underwent major changes. It has been modernized as it is now a fully machined aluminum standard arbor reel featuring a multi-position click and pawl drag system. This is a must see.

Fenwick has a tradition amongst Canadian anglers. Remember fibreglass rods? Well Fenwick has introduced the Fenglass fly rod for 2016. These glass construction rods are designed to make an accurate fly presentation.

Hardy has been around for over 140 years. This is a highly regarded manufacturer of quality fly fishing rods and reels. If you are a fly angler who prefers a fast action fly rod then check out the new Wraith. These rods are available in a Fresh Water Series and an All Water Series. The Wraith rods are designed for delivering long casts.

Crestliner Boats has launched several new models for 2016 which include the Discovery Series, the TC19 and 2000 Bay. As well, the Raptor and Storm series have been redesigned for this coming model year. Crestliner Boats will be celebrating their seventieth anniversary in 2016.

Make sure you attend upcoming trade shows and your favourite fishing store and marine store to check out what is new for 2016. I know we are very excited to do so!

OUT&ABOUT ~ With Emily Mellors

The Holiday Survival GuideAs I sit here, looking out my window at the

snow falling, I can’t help but think about how Christmas is quickly approaching. Christmas

is my favourite time of year. Whether it’s spending time with family, decorating your Christmas tree, baking cookies, ugly Christmas sweater parties or just watching Christmas movies, I love it all. But, there is one thing that I am not so fond of about the holiday season and that is the weight gain from all the eating we do.

I don’t know about your family but my family does lots and lots of eating this time of year. Then again, how could you pass up all those delicious Christmas treats? I know I can’t and you don’t have to either. There are so many ways you can still eat what you want this holiday but still not gain too much weight while doing so and here is how:

Pre eating - Around the holidays there are lots and lots of parties and get-togethers with friends and family. Often at these events there are lots of appetizers and treats. I know it is hard not to want to want to eat one of everything because you are so hungry. It also doesn’t help that appetizers are so small and after you have one you just want more. To solve the problem of over consuming at parties, eat before you go out. Eat a healthy dinner so you are full and you won’t eat too many treats.

Watch through the week - If you are not one for passing up on the goodies at a party; why not watch what you eat through the week? If you know you have a party on the weekend, be careful during the week. If you watch what you are eating all week long then you deserve to treat on the weekend with holiday treats.

Light lunches and heavy dinners - Now there is the problem of all the holiday dinners with the rolls and the turkey and the stuffing and the mashed potatoes and don’t forget about dessert. Holiday dinners are much harder than in parties in regards to not eating a lot. Sitting at the table in between you grandma and Great Aunt Myrtle telling you to, “Eat more,” or “Have some seconds,” is a whole other issue. It is impossible to say no to them. So what do you do? You eat more as they are already scooping it on to your plate before you can say no. Unlike parties, it is difficult to not take too much, but here is how to get around it, instead of having a big meal before a party, do the opposite. If you know you are going to be having a big holiday dinner, eat a light lunch. By doing so, you will not feel so full after but you will still be able to enjoy a delicious meal.

Plate or platter - You get up to the table only to find two different size plates so which one do you take? The answer you would like to say would be the bigger one, but because you're trying not to gain any weight you take the small one. So let me rephrase this question; which size plate should you take? This can be a little harder at sit down dinners because usually the table is already set. However, at parties, they usually offer a dessert size plate and a dinner plate. So choose the dessert size plate. This will help you not eat as much because there won't be

as much room on your plate. Sometimes by having a bigger plate, you feel compelled to fill it which you shouldn't have to. So when possible choose a dessert plate over a dinner plate to reduce the temptation of eating way too much.

How many sections are on your plate? - No matter what size the plate is, you need to be cautious and watch what you eat in order to not gain weight. This can be done very easily though by sectioning your plate. Usually, there are three main sections on your plate which are meat, potatoes and vegetables, but during the holidays there are a few extra. So why not section your plate in five different areas. Meat is the first, and then potatoes and rolls or bread can be the next, with the third and fourth sections as vegetables and the final one as dessert. Notice I have said two full sections should be vegetables so that you aren’t eating too much of the heavy foods. It’s not hard to section your plate; in fact I think it’s a very easy way to limit yourself from eating too much.

Watch what you eat - There are so many good things to eat during holidays and it is very hard to watch what you eat, but here are a few simply things that might help. The first thing you can do is only take a little bit of everything on your plate. This way you still get to taste everything but you don’t feel like you’re eating too much. Then there are always those super squishy little rolls that you just want to eat the whole basket of, but only take one. This way you aren’t missing out on them, but you also aren’t eating too much of them. Another thing you can do is only have a little piece of dessert so that you don’t eat too much but you still get a little sugar fix. Finally, if you don’t like something on your plate, don’t eat it. It may be little things, but watching what you eat can really help over the holidays.

Skip round two - When you take your food, make sure you take enough that you will be full but not too much that you are going to feel ill after. Also, remember to keep to your sections so you don’t eat too much of one thing unless of course it is vegetables. Then once you are done eating what you have on your plate the first time, don’t go back for seconds. Getting seconds may seem like a good decision at first however after you are only going to regret it when you feel too full.

Don’t like, don’t eat - The last tip I have is don’t feel like you have to be polite. When you’re full, you are full and that is when you should stop eating. Don’t feel like just because there is still food on your plate that you have to eat it. The host is not going to be angry because you didn’t eat all the food on your plate. So don’t feel that you have to be polite and only eat as much as your body wants.

It doesn’t sound like much however by just doing these few things it can really make a difference. Just make sure you don’t focus too much on gaining weight. The holidays are a time to celebrate so, Happy Holidays Everyone!
