 Laboratory Services, both media prepara on and glassware will be off during the winter break. Our last day to get everything done is Tuesday, December 23 and we will return Monday, Janu‐ary 5, 2015.  We will work diligently to get as much glassware clean and back to the labs before the holiday and will supply extra glassware bins on request.  We will stock every subscrip on lab's shelves with extra media to use over the break. A key to the media prepara on room 158 will be le  with the Greenhouse folks for emergencies. If you need addi onal stock media or chemical reagent, please contact the Greenhouse folks to get the key and to get the media. Please record what you take on the clipboard or white board.

Monday Morning Seminars

  

STOCKROOM Contact Doug Carruthers with ques ons. 

 The Stockroom will close on Wednesday a ernoon, December 24, 2014 and will reopen at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, January 5, 2015. Please plan accordingly for any items that you an ci‐pate needing during the Winter Break (purchase orders, stockroom inventory, etc.).   The Diagnos c Supply Center (Invitrogen, BioRad and Qiagen products) will be closed during this period as well. The deadline for placing special Diagnos c Supply Center orders is noon on Monday, December 22, 2014.  The last day for FedEx and UPS pickup and delivery is Wednesday, December 24, 2014. Pickup and delivery services will resume on Monday, January 5, 2015. Any orders that will ship on ice should be delivered to BTI no later than December 24, 2014.

MISCELLANEOUS BUILDING NOTES  

 Building Access:  Ins tute doors will remain locked throughout the Winter Break, beginning December 24, 2014 at 6:00pm through Monday, January 5, 2015 at 7:15am. If you will need access to the building during break, be sure to contact b help@cornell.edu to verify that your CU ID card is valid for building access.   Kitchen:  Please remove any unwanted and outdated items from the 2nd floor kitchen refrigerator. A defros ng / cleaning will occur in early January. Outdated and/or unrecognizable contents will be thrown away.   Cleaning and Trash Pickup: Custodial staff will be working through Wednesday morning, December 24th. If you do not want to leave food waste in your trash bin over break (and return to some rather unpleasant odors), please take it to the dumpster off the Greenhouse entry doors before leaving on the 24th.

90th Celebration Success

 We would like to take the  me to thank everyone at BTI who made the 90th anniversary of the Boyce Thompson Ins tute such a success. From the planning commi ee to the event par ci‐pants, each of you played an important role in helping us celebrate our rich history. Together we commemorated BTI’s history by exploring our rich past and discussing exci ng future through a historic play, ea ng good food, enjoying warm conversa on with new friends, and rekindling noteworthy old connec ons.  We saw the return of former BTI staff and alumni, staff from the Boyce Thompson Arboretum, and even a member of the Thompson family!  We are very pleased to making more connec‐ons with people and projects from BTI’s history, and we plan to keep this process going in

After Hours Building Access

As we approach the new year, the please remember that all containers, bo les, vials, flasks, etc. of chemicals, solu ons, and media must be labeled. The label must comply with the Glob‐al Harmonized System (GHS). (Remember your hazard communica on training.)  Hazardous materials must be labeled with chemical contents, quan ty or concentra on, trig‐ger word (DANGER or WARNING), hazard iden fica on, (corrosive, flammable, toxic, etc.), precau onary statements (i.e. May cause burns), pictograms, and contact informa on ‐ ad‐dress (i.e. room 158, Lab Services, Boyce Thompson Ins tute, Tower Rd, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853.)  If the material is not hazardous (no injury if the material is ingested, inhaled, splashed in the eyes, etc.) then mark the label "Not Hazardous" and skip the precau onary statements and pictograms.  Common abbrevia ons are okay (i.e. NaCl for sodium chloride) but have the list of abbrevia‐ons with the real chemical name (i.e. IUPAC), always available. 

 Hazard communica on extends beyond the bo le label. If you have other hazards (i.e. hot autoclaved materials, sharps, radioac ve equipment), then label those hazards, too.  

Safety and the Globally Harmonized System (GHS)

 Congratula ons to proud parents Marina Pombo and Hernan Rosli on the birth of their daugh‐ter Emma Rosli born on Oct 31st.  Congratula ons to Patrick Boyle, who has started a new job at Monsanto in a posi on as a Discovery Research Scien st in Monsanto’s Emerging Leaders in Science (ELS) rota onal pro‐gram. This program involves three one‐year placements in dis nct and strategically selected research areas, with an emphasis on the development and refinement of leadership skills. Pat’s first assignment is in the familiar field of plant disease resistance.   Mar n lab welcomes to Tom Jacobs:   Tom received his PhD at the University of Georgia at the Ins tute of Plant Breeding Gene cs and Genomics.  The focus of his research was on the development of molecular tools for func‐onal genomics in soybean.  Specifically, he developed a new silencing technique using the ta‐

siRNA pathway, modified CRISPR/Cas vectors for soybean genome modifica ons, and created a new method to iden fy transgene inser on sites.  He was also involved with a mul ‐state collabora ve project to create nematode‐resistant soybeans with RNAi.  In the Mar n lab, he plans to develop a high‐throughput screening system using CRISPR/Cas in tomato and to use this system to iden fy tomato genes involved in the plant immune response.

BTI VOLLEY BOMBERS had an awesome season in the Co-rec Intramural Games at Cornell. While playing for 3 years in the women’s intra-murals program, this was the first year for co-rec mixed teams. The team made it to the quarter finals but lost with a tight score of 25-23 and 26-24. Thanks to all team-members and supporters too! Welcome Meredith Dessoye, HR Manager My name is Meredith Dessoye.  I’m your new Human Resources Manager.  I’m originally from the Philadelphia area but relocated to Upstate New York in 2007.  I’m a Syracuse University graduate and bleed Orange!  My door is always open to anyone who wants to talk basket‐ball.  I have three amazing children who keep me on the go.  When we aren’t at lacrosse tour‐naments, soccer games or swim meets, we enjoy being outside and camping.  I enjoy live mu‐sic and love to laugh!  I’m very excited to be part of the BTI team and respect the organiza‐on’s core values.  Please bear with me as I get to know all of you and learn about the amaz‐

ing research that is being conducted.     Welcome Jeff Brockway, Sr. Building Mechanic Jeff Brockway recently joined BTI as a Senior Building Mechanic.  Jeff brings significant experi‐ence and knowledge to BTI, including an extensive mechanical background.   Jeff can be found in the Mechanical Shop office located in the basement along with Dave MacDonald and Char‐lie Paucke.  Welcome Nicole Waters Fisher, Educa on Programs Assistant Nicole joins BTI in December as our new Educa on Programs Assistant.  Her administra ve experience and warm demeanor make her a welcome addi on to the growing Educa on Out‐reach Department, currently reaching over 5,000 people annually with BTI science.  When we asked Nicole about her professional aim to join BTI, she said "I am deeply passionate about coordina ng ac vi es that contribute to a greater good.  I am extremely excited about joining the BTI and look forward to contribu ng my part to such an excep onal organiza on!"    Nicole is a na ve Central New Yorker, raised in the Groton/Dryden area. She a ended college in Albany and has lived in Cranberry Lake, Marie a and Westchester County. While se ling into their new home, Nicole, husband Dan and son Sawyer will spend free  me hiking and camping in the nearby Danby Forest. She has held the role of assistant winemaker at a local winery, is passionate about the outdoors and loves to cook.

Changing of the Guard January 5, 2015: Greg Mar n con nues to serve as Ac ng President through January 5, 2015 while David Stern is on sabba cal leave.  Greg is, himself, now on sabba c through June 1, 2015 but con nues to be accessible via email.  VP Opera ons — Change in Staffing Structure Following a discussion with the Board of Directors at its November mee ng, a decision was made to not fill the VP Opera ons posi on.  The departments repor ng to VP Opera ons will now be overseen by Sophia Darling in her capacity as VP Finance. These include IT Sup‐port, Greenhouse, Facili es/Mechanical Shop. Ques ons and inquiries can be directed to the Senior Leadership Team or Sophia directly.  IT Support ‐‐ Staffing: We are looking forward to Dale's return in early January. Creg will be staying on for a cou‐ple months as well.  Be sure to send requests to b help@cornell.edu and not directly to our individual email addresses.

Dick Staples, the G.L. McNew Scientist Emeri-tus , passes along his spe-cial thanks to Bob Kohut for his contributions to the 90th Anniversary project.

"I want to commend Bob Kohut for his timely and imaginative suggestion to have an actor impersonate our founder, William Boyce Thompson, as a part of our 90th anniversary celebra-tion. He even provided a manuscript. His suggestion gave an important thematic focus for our 90th anniver-sary celebration. And thanks to her knowledge of the drama scene, Bridget Rigas was able to provide an actor who played the Thompson character so convincingly."

The Board of Directors is pleased to announce the addi on of a new member to BTI’s Scien fic Advisory Board (SAB): Professor Sir David Baulcombe.   Invited to BTI by the Ins tute’s Post Graduate Society, Professor Baulcombe visited the Ins tute in October and delivered a lecture on RNA silencing and the phenotypes of hybrid plants to a standing‐room‐only crowd in Cornell’s Biotechnology Building. Following the visit, Professor Baulcombe accepted an invita on to join BTI’s Scien fic Advisory Board.    Said Baulcombe, “BTI is a great ins tute and has a blue‐ribbon Advisory Board. It will be a pleas‐ure to join.” He will begin a three‐year term of service in May 2015.  Read more about Professor Baulcome and his work at h p://www.plantsci.cam.ac.uk/research/davidbaulcombe.

Dr. Georg Jander was recently promoted to the rank of Professor at BTI.  As noted by Greg Mar n, Ac ng President, "Georg is a valued colleague who has made interna onally‐recognized contribu ons to our understanding of the molecular basis of plant‐insect interac ons. In addi‐on, he has developed close collabora ons with many researchers at Cornell and throughout 

the world which enhances the reputa on of our ins tute. Georg has also played a leadership role in our summer NSF‐REU program as well as being ac ve in graduate student training. We are fortunate to have him as a colleague."  

The Senior Leadership Team (SLT) wishes to thank Greg Mar n for his leadership as BTI Ac ng President from July ‐ December 2014. Greg brought his impeccable organiza on and manage‐ment prac ces to the SLT, and we appreciated his fair and respec ul approach to decision‐making.  We were apprecia ve of Greg’s nature of asking ques ons, which made it easier to discuss and work through complex issues.  Greg took an ac ve role in se ng the agenda and running Project Leaders mee ngs and ac ve‐ly contributed to the success of faculty breakfasts. Of par cular point was Greg’s ability to make genuine connec ons across the Ins tute.  Many staff appreciated the  me he took to listen to and respond to their concerns.  SLT wishes Greg a successful and enjoyable leave in Florida. We look forward to his return to

Inclement Weather: BTI Closings and Delayed Openings

As the holidays are upon us, so is the season for inclement weather. We would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of BTI’s policy around inclement weather, closings, and delayed openings.    In case of closings or delays due to general weather or travel condi ons, the Ins tute will generally follow the lead of Cornell with regard to opera ons.  Please check in with your su‐pervisor about general planning for your specific lab / unit in the event of an emergency.    Please make use of the following resources to verify Cornell's and BTI's opera ng status.

Plant Cell Imaging Facility (PCIC)  

PGS Updates

 More than seven years have passed since the official opening of the Plant Cell Imaging Center (PCIC) which is located on the first floor (104B) of the Boyce Thompson Ins tute.  Our facility provides researchers with access to high resolu on fluorescence microscopes, including a con‐focal microscope (Leica SP5).  The in‐house microscopes help BTI researchers to perform mi‐croscopy without leaving the building and without stressing their live plant samples.  Many us‐ers have already enjoyed the comfort of our in house state‐of‐the‐art microscopy tools.   So far 190 researchers have been trained on the Confocal microscope alone.  The facility also hosts a Leica DM5500B upright fluorescence microscope and Olympus SZX‐12 fluorescence stereo‐scope, both equipped with a high resolu on digital cameras and a Leica RM2255 motorized rotary microtome with capabili es for sec oning wax or plas c embedded materials.    Leica TCS SP5 Confocal Microscope The Leica TCS SP5 confocal microscope with its new HyD detectors, allows the examina on of fluorescent specimens with clarity and resolu on that far exceeds conven onal epifluorescence microscopy. The new setup using lower laser power, prolongs cell viability and reduces photo‐toxicity, delivers crisp images with high signal to noise ra o and the photon coun ng op on can provide quan fiable results.  The system has Tandem Scanning which combines two true confo‐cal point scanners: a conven onal scanner for imaging at high resolu on and a resonant scan‐ner for high speed imaging.   Applica ons:  

Mul ‐color imaging, suitable for most fluorophores from DAPI to Cy5. 

Op cal sec oning (Z‐scanning). 

Lambda scanning. 

Time lapse imaging. 

Measuring up to five dimensions, including x, y, z,  me and wavelength. 

3‐D imaging and reconstruc on. 

Co‐localiza on studies. 

Spectral un‐mixing. 

FRET (Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer). 

FRAP (Fluorescence Recovery A er Photo bleaching).

Kudo: BIO 101 Instructors

A big thank you and con-gratulations to Vered Tzin and Benoit Castandet for teaching Biology 101 this semester in collaboration with Tompkins Cortland Community College. Benoit has taught the course for three semesters and will step down to make way for a new PGS member. Vered will continue to co-teach the course in the spring of 2015. Shawn Kenaley (Education and Outreach) – Acclimation and an Update

 Since joining the Educa on and Outreach (EO) team in February 2014, I have been impressed by the collegiality and professionalism of BTI faculty and staff as well as the shared vision for the ins tute.  The sincere manner and openness of the BTI community con nues to provide a migh ly powerful and las ng impression.  Over the last 10 months, I have taken on the daily opera on of and responsibility for BTI’s Kohut teaching laboratory.  In so doing, I have become the departmental laboratory safety representa ve and have improved the overall organiza on and func onality of the workspace – the con nued usage of the laboratory over the last several months by faculty and postdocs a ests to the significance of these minor yet beneficial changes.  With that said, the laboratory is “buzzing” this year accommoda ng courses in introductory biology and molecular plant biology co‐taught by our own BTI post‐docs and faculty, respec vely.  Moreover, this workspace also remains the hub for teacher professional development programs, such as the Curriculum Development Project (CDP) in Plant Biology as well as the Bioenergy and Bioproducts Educa on Programs (BBEP), and for the distribu on and fabrica on of laboratory kits that bring BTI research into grade 7‐12 classrooms and community colleges na onwide.  I an cipate that 2015 will also be produc‐ve year as collabora ng faculty, Tiffany Fleming (Director, EO), and I unveil new classroom 

curricula at regional (e.g., Cornell Science Sampler Series) and ins tute‐sponsored workshops this spring and summer for eventual integra on into middle and high schools statewide and beyond.  My principal responsibility at BTI has been to execute and coordinate the BBEP  – a USDA‐NIFA funded program providing professional development opportuni es for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) teachers in the areas of bioenergy, biofuels, and bioprod‐ucts.  It was an exci ng and successful 2014.  I par cipated in five regional teacher develop‐ment programs; engaging a total of 119 grade 7‐12 teachers via lectures on bioenergy and biofuels (e.g., “Microalgae to Biofuels: Simple molecules to Complex Systems) as well as hands‐on demonstra ons of BBEP‐related classroom curricula.  Moreover, this past summer, a total of 19 teachers a ended the 2014 BBEP Teacher Development Workshop held July 20‐25 at BTI and 80+ BBEP‐related experiment kits were distributed to BBEP alumni and teach‐ers new to the program.  All told, we trained138 teachers providing approximately 2,084 students the opportunity to conduct their very own classroom experiments u lizing BBEP kits. More students are slated to par cipate before year‐end, as we con nue to receive re‐quests for classroom curricula and kits from middle and high school teachers throughout the Northeast.     A highlight of the BBEP program is our con nued engagement with summer workshop par‐cipants via curriculum support and classroom visits.  To date, I have traveled to several high 

school classrooms in NY State (e.g., The Harley School [Rochester], Pulaski High School, and Maple Hill High School [Castleton on Hudson]), where I get to interact and work with stu‐dents in their design/execu on of BBEP laboratories as well listen to their thoughts about sustainable energy solu ons and vision for future green economies.  While with these re‐markable students, I have been struck by their interest in natural resources and sciences as well as their wishes to “make a difference” in shaping the renewable energy sector as in‐formed ci zenry, researchers, and teachers.  I am eager to hit the road again in the dawn of 2015; stay tuned.
