Mobile Mammography in PCIC Practices - UNC Health...
Transcript of Mobile Mammography in PCIC Practices - UNC Health...
Over the six month period of screening events with the mobile
mammography unit (March-August 2016), clinics utilizing the mobile unit
saw an average of 7.1% increase in their Breast Cancer Screening rate,
compared to a 2.8% increase across the rest of the PCIC practices.
Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death among
women in the United States. In 2015, an estimated 232,000 women
were diagnosed with the disease and 40,000 women died of it. It is
most frequently diagnosed among women aged 55 to 64 years, and the
median age of death from breast cancer is 68 years.1
One of the ten quality metrics that the Primary Care Improvement
Collaborative (PCIC) tracks is breast cancer screening in women age 50
– 74. The FY18 target goal for breast cancer screening is 80%. PQI
provides assistance to the PCIC practices by finding ways to reach these
screening goals.
The primary objective for this particular project was to see if partnering
with REX Mobile Mammography team would help the PCIC practices in
reaching the FY18 80% goal.
The secondary objective was to see if this partnership would result in
increased patient and staff satisfaction.
PQI partnered with REX Mobile Mammography Unit to conduct on-site
screenings at various PCIC practices. To date, the mobile mammogram
unit has made seven visits to four different practices across Wake,
Orange, and Alamance counties and over 130 women have been
screened for breast cancer. The site visits allow patients to be seen at
their normal primary care office location, where the mammogram bus
arrives in the parking lot and screens patients on-site.
The PQI / REX Mobile Mammography Unit partnership has been a
tremendous value add for the PCIC. While the mobile mammography
service is available to any PCIC practice it has proved to be especially
helpful for those clinics in outlining areas. Patients enjoy the
convenience of scheduling, navigating and parking with familiar staff
and location. The clinics also see the benefits of the screening event
on their PCIC quality metrics
“Having the mobile mammography us was a great experience for the staff and
the patients. Having the bus on-site was a great opportunity for the patients to
have local access for their imaging needs. The patients enjoyed the Rex staff
and enjoyed the seamless process.”
