LIMA - PERU

I. TIPS & GENERAL INFORMATION Regions and Weather The Pacific Coast

This region features deserts, fertile valleys and beautiful beaches in the north. In Lima and the Coast, in general, December to April are the hottest and

sunniest months. June to August is humid and a light drizzle may occur from June to October. You can wear lightweight clothing from October to May.

The Andes Highlands

A mountainous area dominated by the Andes, where Mount Huascaran soars to 6,768 meters.

In the Highlands the weather can vary considerably during the day: very cold at night and early morning, warm at noon. It is advisable to use clothes that you can easily change. The rainy season is from December to March so waterproof clothing is essential.

The Amazon Rainforest

A vast region of tropical vegetation in the Amazon River Basin, home to Peru’s largest natural reserves.

In the rainforest, the same type of clothes is suitable all year: tropical kit but always with long trousers and lightweight cotton shirts with long sleeves, which are not too warm but protect against insects. Don’t forget waterproof boots, tennis shoes or trainers for walking, hat, waterproof jacket and a bathing suit.

Population

The last official census was taken in 2005, showing a population of 25,662,000 inhabitants (Urban: 72,3% and Rural: 27,7%). Peru is a nation of mixed ethnic background. Throughout its history, Peru has been a meeting ground for different nations and cultures. Spaniards conquered the indigenous population approximately 500 years ago. As a result and later enriched by the migration of African, Asian and European people, a nation, with rich ethnic mixture as one of its most outstanding characteristics, was formed.

Time Zone

Peru is 5 hours behind GMT. It is also in the same time zone as US Eastern Standard Time Zone and does not observe daylight-savings time.

Passport/Visa

A valid passport is required for stays of up to three months for most nationalities. Please check to make sure you have a current passport, photocopy and carry it at all time. A tourist visa is not required for citizens of most countries in the Americas and Western Europe. Please check before traveling as conditions can change unexpectedly.


Tax Exempt

Foreign visitors (not residing in Peru) are exempt of the current 19% taxes on lodging and meals taken at the hotel where they overnight.

Our quotations reflect such exemption. A Xerox copy of the passport will be taken by the hotel at each check in.

PASSPORT & IMMIGRATION CARD are the only documents valid for the exemption.

If passengers fail to present above documents during check in (at each hotel), the hotels will charge them the tax directly.

Insurance

It is highly recommended that travelers contract travel insurance to cover events such as trip cancellations, medical expenses, repatriation and loss of belongings. Make sure you carefully read your policy in order to assure that you are covered in all instances and up to an amount you consider appropriate.

Immunizations

If you plan traveling to the rainforest, we recommend taking a Yellow Fever vaccine at least 10 days before your trip. Passengers continuing to Brazil also need a Yellow Fever vaccine.

Communications

International and in-country long distance calls can be made from public pay phones. Public phones can take coins as well as cards, which are sold in stands and supermarkets. No collect calls can be made from a pay phone. To obtain telephone information, dial 103 (service in Spanish). To make an international call dial: 00 + country code + city code + telephone number. For domestic calls from one city to another, dial: 0 + city code + telephone number. The main cities in the country have public Internet booths.

Language

Spanish is the official language, although there are many different languages spoken in the country, such as Quechua, Aymara and a myriad of dialects in the Amazon rainforest region. English is widely spoken in the main tourist areas.

Currency & Finances

The official currency of Peru is the Nuevo Sol (S/.) which is divided in 100 cents. Coins in circulation include the following denominations: 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents, as well as 1, 2 and 5 Nuevos Soles. Paper bills come in 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 Nuevos Soles. US Dollars are accepted in most commercial establishments, restaurants and service stations, at the current exchange rate. Most of the establishments accept most credit cards, such as Visa, Master Card, Diners and American Express. Travelers’ Checks can be used with some limitations, and can be cashed at any bank. Inquire at the establishment as to whether they are accepted or not, and remember that you need your passport to cash travelers’ checks.

We recommend that travelers bring dollars in cash, some traveler’s checks (Visa or Amex) and a credit or bank card that can be used to withdraw extra money in an emergency. Visa is more widely accepted than MasterCard.

Exchange rate varies from 3.30 to 3.40 soles for 1 US dollar.


ATMs are widely available at airports, shopping centers, main tourist areas and banks.

Departure Tax

Air passengers pay a $30.25 departure tax upon leaving Peru. For domestic flights the tax varies according to what city you are flying from. On average: US$6.05 per domestic flights.

Electricity

220 volts. Most four and five-star hotels provide 110 volt electric current. Tipping

Restaurants & bars: a 10% tip is customary wherever a service charge is not included in the bill. For exceptional service an additional 5% may be added even when service is included.

Hotels: $1 per day for the cleaning staff, $0.50 - $1 per bag for porters, 10% for room service if the service charge has not already been added.

Taxi Drivers: generally do not expect a tip unless they carry your bags, wherein $1 per person should be enough.

Private Drivers: can get $5-$10 per person per day – depending upon service, the length of the journey and the number of passengers. A long journey with only one or two passengers would warrant the higher tip.

Tourist Shuttle Bus Drivers (collective, not private): might get $2 per person. Tour Guides: $5-10 per person for a day of guiding, depending upon length of

tour, type of guiding, etc. Driver/Guides: (Driving Guides) $5-$10 per person per day. Foreign Guides / Specialist guides: might earn a larger tip than the average tour

guide (for a special service performed, or if it generally feels appropriate).

These are just guidelines to help guests determine the appropriate tipping. Tipping is not required by any means, especially in the case of mediocre or poor service, dangerous driving, unfriendliness, low enthusiasm in tour leading, etc. As a point of reference, tipping is not a big part of Peruvian culture, though tipping is highly appreciated in all cases and somewhat expected from foreigners in some cases. Our general advice to travelers is to tip what you feel is appropriate – using the guidelines above – and do not worry offending by tipping. Tipping is never mandatory!

Traveling with Children

Peruvians love children and if you are traveling with children you will probably attract special attention which can often be of great help. It is wise to always have a stock of bread, biscuits & other snacks when traveling in case the food at stops is not of your child’s preference.

Be aware of

Take normal precautions against pickpockets. Carry a copy of your identification documents. Keep originals and your valuables in the safety deposit box of your hotel and make sure to list down what you deposit and verify the responsibility assumed by the establishment. Carry valuables discreetly. Do not carry large amounts of cash. Keep an eye on your bags and


luggage. Do not exchange money on the street. Do not walk around late at night through areas with poor lighting or without a companion.

Hand Luggage

We strongly recommend you to include some essentials in your carry-on luggage, just in case your main luggage should get lost due to airline problems. Bring essential medicine, underwear, toiletries and a change of clothing.

Packing List

highlands (December-March). Bathing suit. Comfortable clothes for the evenings. Essentials Photocopy of your passport & insurance policy. Sun glasses. Books to read. Watch / Alarm Clock. Name & Address Book. Day Pack for day and overnight trips. Camera & Film (Film is widely available but may be more expensive than at

home). Toiletries & wet wipes. Binoculars if you are interested in the local wildlife – especially birds. Small sewing kit.

Medical Kit

Bring any medication you are taking. If you have a preferred physician, bring her/his phone number in case you get

sick and want a trusted expert to talk to. Sun block cream. Insect repellant & antihistamines. Re-hydration salts and anti-diarrhea preparations. Pepto-Bismol for stomach upsets. Regular aspirin or similar. Antiseptic cream, band-aids, sterile wipes.

"Soroche", the altitude sickness

Soroche affects many people during their first few days in Cusco, Puno and Arequipa. Symptoms of altitude sickness include headaches, fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, insomnia and shortness of breath.

To avoid "soroche", take it easy the first day: avoid physical efforts, only have light meals, reduce smoking and alcohol intake and drink plenty of mate de coca (tea made out of coca leaves). Direct reactions to altitude sickness can last a few days, and if it is serious, we recommend that you see a doctor.
