HS Friday Bulletin May 6

1 Dear Parents, Soon we will be into that season of saying farewell and goodbye to students, parents and faculty, who for various reasons are moving on from Manila. I spoke at this morning’s High School Faculty briefing about two special Despedida’s coming up. On Tuesday, May 10 th we have a wonderful function planned for Victoria Herrera, who is retiring from ISM after 38 years of service! Please come and enjoy the event and consider making a donation to the Filipino Scholarship Fund which has been created in her name. The second Despedida will be next Friday, May 13 th , which is hosted by the PTA and honors all departing faculty across all divisions of ISM. I hope I will see you at both events! As part of the process of “signing out” in the High School we talk of our “big four” ritual ceremonies that serve to mark the end of the year. On Friday May 20 th we have the annual Honor Societies celebrati on. This is followed on Monday May 30 th when we celebrate academic and service excellence at the High School Honors Awards ceremony. Then the very next day we will graduate 174 seniors at High School Graduat ion. Perhaps of more interest for students though is the Junior-Senior Prom to be held on Saturday, May 28th. I also hope to see many of you in attendance as we celebrate another rewarding year at ISM. As usual at this time I would like to take this opportunity to thank all parents who have directly or indirectly supported the High School this year. Parent participation in ISM High School events has never been stronger and I am sure that this has been a significant contributor to our success in academics and in the cultural and sporting arenas. Whether it was your involvement in PTA, a committee, attending parent coffees, on the sports field or court, or providing encouragement to our performing arts, I really do want to state our appreciation for your ongoing support. Our programs would not be as rich and as successful without your involvement. On an administrative note it is very important at this time of year is that t he school receives accurate data on re-enrollment and on those students who are withdrawing. If you know you are leaving ISM and have not communicated that to us I urge you to contact either the High School Office or the Admissions Office as soon as possible. We would like to be able to inform students who are currently waitlisted that they can be admitted to ISM as soon as possible. Kind regards, William R. S. Brown High School Principal International School Manila For ATTENDANCE concerns, please contact the HS Office (Sam Ramo s or Laurie Atilano) Tel: 840 8650 / 840 8653 or email [email protected] For GUIDANCE concerns, please contact Gigi Azarcon and Jasmin Andres Tel:840-8655 / 840-8660 May 6, 2011

Thanks to our coaches from gymnastics and mixed touchfor their time with the teams this season.

SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM:

CHINESE SUMMER CAMPIN BEIJING

Dear Grade 10 and 11 students,

Are you ready for the REAL WORLD? How would you like to spend 4 days (June 13, 14, 15, and 16) right after school finisheslearning more about a company/industry/career that you are curious about…and maybe even getting a bit of work experience at thesame time.

Welcome to The Bearcat Summer Internship ProgramAs you all know well, high school for students is (among many things) a time of self-discovery. It is a time where you begin to betteracknowledge your aptitudes/likes, where you hone your strengths and where you begin to sort through that rather complicated mapknow as your educational and future career path. Unfortunately, it is often a map with gaps between what you learn in your “academic”classrooms and the “real world” your teachers are working to prepare you for.

In short, we hope to help bridge that gap for selected ISM students through a four day summer internship/job shadow placement rightafter high school finishes in June with various companies in the Metro Manila area. During this 4 day internship, you wouldessentially work (without pay of course) at a particular company, handling various level appropriate responsibilities and/orjob shadowing a selected employee(s).

Current companies that have signed up and will be offering internships/job shadowing opportunities to our ISM students include(among others):

Alaska Milk Corporation and Asian Development Bank (ADB)If you are interested in possibly being selected for an internship/job shadow placement please

1. Make sure you have the dates of June 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 open in your schedule and2. Check your ISM email account very shortly for additional details on how to apply.

In the meantime, please contact Mr. McQueen ([email protected]) in the HS Guidance Office if you have any questions.
