How To: Stencil Designs onto T-shirts

You’re a perfect candidate for stenciling if you:
• are creative!
• enjoy painting.
• have a lot of patience.
• are tired of running into people with the same shirt on.
• hate spending too much money on clothes.
• simply want to express yourself.
Materials
• T-shirt• Stencil design• Construction or contact paper• Acrylic paint• Textile medium• Exact-o knife• Paintbrush• Hard surface to cut on (i.e.
Tupperware storage top)• Tape• Magazine or large piece of
cardboard• An iron
Step 1:
• Find stencil of your choice (store bought or from online)
• Print onto construction or contact paper.

Step 2:
• Cut out dark areas of your stencil.
Step 3:
• Place stencil over t-shirt.
• Put tape over outer edges so stencil stays in place.
Step 4:
• Mix a color of your choice of acrylic paint with textile medium.
• There should be a 2:1 ratio of the paints (more acrylic).
Step 5:
• IMPORTANT: Place a piece of cardboard or a magazine in shirt so paint won’t bleed onto the back of the shirt.
Step 6:
• DAB paint over the stencil, just enough to fill it in.
• DON’T OVERDUE IT, bleeding will occur.
Step 7:
• Let paint dry for about 30 minutes.
• When dry, carefully peel away the stencil…
The moment of truth…
Step 8:
• Remove cardboard from in between shirt.
• Place thin towel over painted area a iron over it for a few seconds to set paint.
Step 9:
• Add any details you feel is needed.
• After hand washing the shirt, you can wear it!
