• Mix your cloudy insulin by rolling thebottle between your hands.

• It is a small pad soaked with alcohol.• It should be used to clean the top of

your insulin bottle and your injectionsite.

• The amount of air needed is the sameas the amount of insulin you take.

• Wipe the top of the insulin bottle witha alcohol swab.

• Push the needle through the rubbertop of the insulin bottle.

• Pull down on the plunger to get insulininto the syringe.

• Be sure to get the right number ofunits.

• Turn the insulin bottle and syringeupside down.

• Put the syringe on a clean surface whileyou get your site ready.

• If the needle touches anything, youmust throw it away and start againwith a new syringe.

• Clean a small area of skin with a BDalcohol swab. If you let the alcohol drybefore you inject, your shot will hurtless.

• Look for air bubbles in your syringe.• Air in the syringe means you get less

insulin.• One way to get rid of air is to tap the

side of your syringe. This brings thebubbles to the top of the syringe so youcan push them out.

• Push the bubbles out by gently pushingthe plunger in until the bubbles aregone. Check your syringe to make sureyou have not lost any insulin.

• Your nurse can show you other ways toget rid of air bubbles.

• Using the SAFE-CLIP™ needle clipper,take the needle off the syringe beforeyou throw it away.

• Do not break the needle off with yourhands.

• Do not throw needles into the garbage.Ask your diabetes nurse about safeways to throw away needles.

• Using the hand you write with, hold thesyringe like a pencil.

• Gently pinch up a fold of skin.• Put the needle straight in.• Push all the insulin into you body by

pushing the plunger all the way down.• You can do it at your own speed.

WARNING TO THOSE GIVINGSHOTS TO OTHER PEOPLE

• If you give a shot to another person,do not use the SAFE-CLIP™ needleclipper or try to put the cap back on theneedle after you have used it.

• Throw the used, uncapped, syringe intoa medical sharps container. Ask yourdiabetes nurse or pharmacist where youcan get this container.

• Using the SAFE-CLIP™ needle clipperor trying to put the cap back on some-one else's used needle can result in aneedle-stick injury.

• Needle-stick injuries can give youserious diseases.

• Any container holding used needlesshould have a lid on it. Keep it out ofreach of children.

• Ask your diabetes nurse or public healthunit what to do when the container isfull.
