TIPS

timber, composite, aluminium or steel joists are acceptablematerials for the substructure ofa deck. the substructure must befixed down to provide a strongbase and drainage, access andairflow are also critical.

the substructure must be aminimum height of 38mm from the ground. for areas with thepotential for debris to build up, aminimum 89mm is recommendedto allow the debris to be removed.

the joist centres for residentialdecks must be a maximum of400mm.

the joist centres for allcommercial decks must be amaximum of 300mm.

when boards are end-to-end andmeet at a joist, use side-by-sidesister joists to support the end ofboth boards.

it’s a good idea to paint the joistsbefore installing the boards sothat they’re not visible from thesurface.

TIPSAll trex boards are unique – no twoboards are the same and as withnormal timber the colour can varygreatly between the boards. to get agood colour spread, pattern and lookthat you are happy with, lay out all theboards and arrange them as you’d likethem to be installed.

the trex deck boards can be cut andcarved like timber without the needto use any special tools. All boardshave a tolerance of up to 5mm onthe length to ensure they can betrimmed down into shape. werecommend that all boards aretrimmed before being installed toensure a straight and clean edge.

Trex Transcend® is a 5-stepprocess. Purchase Trex cap, postsleeves and skirts (steps 1, 2 and3). Then purchase a stair or rail kit(4), and then the balusters (5).

TIPSBreaker boards add a dimension tothe design of the deck and helpdistinguish between different areas.using breaker boards in the deckdesign also means that boards don’thave to be butted up against eachother. when boards are butted up toeach other, make sure you alignboards from the middle rather thanthe edge to allow for expansion ofboards.

Boards often have a camber / bow in the board – especially the longerlengths like the 4.88m. these areeasily resolved when installed.Before installing the board, turn itaround so the camber is curvingoutwards. start installing the boardfrom one end. As you move alongthe board, gently push the boardinto line and use the clips or screwsto secure it.
