Mobilizing BangkokHundreds of thousands of people can now enjoy greater quality of life even at the heart of Thailand’s busy metropolis

There are more than 10 million city dwellers inside Greater Bangkok. The number continues to increase and over 5.5 million vehicles are registered in Bangkok alone. The result: heavy traffic and deteriorated air quality due to emissions from vehicles. The city was calling for an effective mass transit network to move and connect the mass of people.

When the authorities of Bangkok heard the city’s cry for better mobility, the elevated BTS system consisting of Silom and Sukhumvit lines were erected by the Bangkok Mass Transit System Public Co. Ltd. who in turn awarded Siemens the turnkey contract for the mechanical and electrical works including rolling stock, project management as well as maintenance of the system. Ten years since the inaugural operation in December 1999, Siemens

has consistently proven its world class standards in system performance and availability and the prided BTS has been consistently running for over 400,000 commuters per day.

In 2004, The Blue Line or also known as the Chaloem Ratchamongkhon Line ran its track as the first subway system. Siemens who was also the turnkey contractor for the mechanical and electrical works handed over the system ahead of its schedule. It demonstrated Siemens’ commitment to support requirements of both the customer “Bangkok Metro Public Co., Ltd.” and the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand, a government’s arm overseeing the project for improving Bangkok’s much needed mass transit network. Siemens presently maintains the metro system which transports approx. 180,000 passengers daily.

Siemens’ full suite of Industry Solutions gears automotive plants into a smooth performance of excellence

Shorter time-to-market, more vehicle models and variants, higher productivity, highest plant availability, increasing energy costs- challenges for an automotive industry do not only require high-end technology but also an industry-specific know-how from the tasks, technologies and processes involved in every step of the way. Siemens was called in with the technology and the industry expertise by Continental Automotive Ltd, a name that is no stranger to the world of automotive industry. The turnkey contract outlined Siemens’ deliverables to supply and commission the entire electrical and communication system of its new Diesel

Common Rail Systems plant in Thailand. Siemens’ total integrated power solutions delivered the concept of reliable and cost-efficient power supply to its manufacturing areas with twofold benefits: increased plant availability, and secondly, increased produc-tion quality and machine lifetime. The new plant, armed with Siemens’ security and fire alarm system makes sure that it has the op-timum environment for the plant’s high per-formance needs. And Siemens’ communica-tions system handles both communications and data traffic, turning sophisticated inter-connection and highly complex networks into an opportunity of faster business processes and effective cost management. Now any plant can be a smooth operator.

Auto Cruise Waste NotA brewing challenge was turned into an opportunity with the complete supply of Siemens Wastewater Treatment Solutions

For Thailand’s first and largest brewery, Boon Rawd Brewery, conducting responsible business is a reputation that the company could not gamble with. With a constant increase in demand of its product lines from beer, soda to all other drinking beverage, the company planned an expansion of its produc-tion capacity in the Khon Kaen Brewery. This in parallel imposed a new challenge of treating the waste water to both meet the discharge qualities and also generate biogas as an alternative source of fuel to be used in the boiler system. Siemens supplied a complete solution comprising anaerobic and aerobic treatment including the sludge dewatering process. The advanced technology is capable of treating high strength organic wastewaters. And the unique treatment process recovers biogas in two zones, allowing better mixing and separation than traditional anaerobic reactor technology. An activated sludge system including a DualAir® Fine Bubble Diffuser, The DualAir® is designed to minimize pipe and mounting hardware resulting in a lower installed cost. And the Tow-Bro® system effec-tively removes settled secondary sludge from the clarifier, while its flat bottom design redu-ces construction costs. With all objectives met, 5,000m3 of waste water was able to be treated each day.

Rolling SteelThe future of Thailand’s steel supply rests on Siemens’ fully integrated electrical and automation system

When ThaiNox, Thailand’s sole manufacturer for stainless steel sheets and coils decided to increase its production capacity to 300,000 Tonnes Per Annum, Siemens was the name that was roped in to its expansion plan. With 60 percent of local industries and another 40 percent of exports depending on ThaiNox’s production capabilities, the decision was not something they would take risks with. Entering into a consortium with a French machine supplier, DMS, Siemens was on full force to supply, install and commission the entire electrical and automation system for the new cold rolling mill. Equipped with Siemens’ SINAMICS MV and SIMATIC S7, the intelligent automation solution is geared to create long term competitive strength through life cycle services that seek not only to optimize com-ponents, but to genuinely improve the quality of the product, process and production. The patented Contactless Flatness Measurement system with integrated strip-edge detection, SIFLAT, will also be supplied for the first time in Thailand.

The First, the Longest, the Only in ASEANNot many can claim the titles, but thetransnational High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) link project connecting Thailand and Malaysia earned it all for Siemens

When a conventional AC interconnection ceases to guarantee power reliability in over-loads, that’s when big scale technology comes to play. Even during economic uncertainties in the late 90’s, two countries, Thailand and Malaysia boldly decided that power and system reliability for their countries’ energy needs are not to be compromised. That’s when the idea of a transnational power grid, the TNB-EGAT High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Link started to brew.

With its breadth of competence and literally attuned with the 2 countries’ geographical curves and conditions, the HVDC transmission line was successfully stretched out from the Klong Ngae 230kV DC converter substation in Thailand and the Gurun 500/275kV DC con-verter substation 500/275kV DC converter sub-station in Malaysia and some 110 kilometers away. Both stations were fully equipped with cutting edge, state of the art technology in power electronics and control systems; with 8kV electrically-triggered- thyristor.

A super grid was created and until today the two countries are sharing spines of its energy reserves through a first of its kind agreement, commissioning a 500kV, 300MW monopole, designed to be easily upgraded to a 600MW when the need arises.

The A-TeamUnmatched excellence in power engineering services is in the hands of Siemens’ own experts

With world-class engineering expertise combined with the accumulated years of experiences of a local team (19 persons), Siemens Thailand has been the engineering competence centre for designing works, from medium voltage switchgear panels to medium voltage and high voltage substations up to 500 kV, covering both AIS and GIS types. The local team supports Siemens’ projects across all con-tinents around the world, including Germany, Australia, China, UAE, India, Norway and Chile.

Proud references in Thailand include two 500kV AIS substations in Chombung and Pluak Daeng, and two 500kV GIS substations in Nong Chok and Sai Noi for the state power utility. And not to mention, more than 5,000 medium voltage switchgears for the Metropolitan Electricity Authority, the Provincial Electricity Authority and private industrial customers.

A Greener OptionCombined Cycle Power Plants offers an option for a more efficient and cleaner generation of power

Almost half of Thailand’s energy is consumed by its hungry industrial sector. This is why a sufficient, clean and highly reliable energy supply is essential to meet the critical demand – which is expected to rise by five to six percent each year.

Siemens along with consortium partner, Marubeni Corporation of Japan were entrusted by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand to build two new combined cycle power plants with Siemens Gas Turbines 5-4000F. The Chana power plant situated in Songkhla province - Thailand’s southern economic hub - supplies electricity to 14 southern provinces to meet an increase in energy demand as the economic and industrial develop-ment in the south is constantly growing. The Bang-pakong Block V power plant, which lies 60 kilome-ters east of Bangkok in Chachoengsao province has

been put into service since early 2009, providing an efficient and reliable power supply to drive the nation‘s continuous economic and social de-velopment. With an aggregate capacity of 3,680 megawatts, Bang Pakong power plant is presently Thailand‘s biggest and most modern power plant employing state-of-the-art technology in power system and environmental management. It plays a vital role in securing the power system, now producing well over 25 percent of the country‘s electricity needs.

Both power plants use natural gas as the primary fuel which has significantly reduced the country‘s dependence on imported oil, and thus saving substantial foreign currency each year. With a 750 MW capacity each, the power plants’ highly efficient gas turbine technology from Siemens were commissioned to reduce carbon dioxide emission per unit of electricity produced so that less damage is done to the environment.

Smooth Flowextension bays, 100 MVA transformers, protection system and related accessories enables the flow of energy between the refinery itself and the state’s power grid. Excess energy generated during the refinery process can also be sold as additional revenue for Thai Oil. Since a refinery is a sensitive and hazardous area, the substation was erected with 100% safety procedures in mind. Given the complex scale and difficult execution, Siemens could still finish the construction in record time of just 10 months- 15 days ahead of schedule. This accomplishment was to the fullest satisfaction of the customer.

The bottleneck of electricity flow helps increase revenue for Thai Oil

Limitation of electricity flow is generally the main culprit for a blackout at a refinery plant which leads to a temporary plant shutdown. This can cause huge damage and loss to the plant’s productivity and thus impact revenue, even if a shutdown lasts only a few minutes. To avoid such incidents, Thai Oil Refinery, a leading refinery of Thai Oil Group, selected Siemens to supply and build a 115 kV substation at its refinery at Ao Udom, Sriracha of Chonburi province. The substation which includes

Thailand has emerged as the medical hub of Asia with more than four hundred hospitals offering the most advanced treatments. Medical tourists are expected to reach 2 million by the year 2010. And with aging population and demographic change, the demand for healthcare, both preventive and curative is expected to continue to soar. Siemens is in the blueprint to make high quality and affordable world-class healthcare a continued reality for Thailand.

The Best SliceAsia’s largest private practice adopts the best in its class for detection of even the earliest signs of cancer with Siemens PET/CT scanner

As distinguished as its name, the Bumrungrad International is Southeast Asia’s largest private hospital in a class of its own. It is the first hospital in Asia to be granted the prestigious Joint Commission International Accreditation (JCIA) and offers nothing less than the best state-of-the-art diagnostic, therapeutic and intensive care facilities for more than a million patients from local ground and abroad each year. Siemens was entrusted to install a Biograph 64 True Point True V PET/CT (Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography) scanner, a high resolution medical imaging device used for early cancer detection that enables doctors to pinpoint the location of abnormalities and tumors as small as 3-6 millimeters in size. This instrument provides an

anatomical map for pinpointing the exactlocation of tumors in the body with 64-slices per revolution in only 0.33 seconds; thus providing enhanced quality and faster views for both two and three dimension images. The symptoms can be diagnosed with more precision and accuracy than using either normal PET or CT separately. Apart from early cancer detection, the PET/CT can be used to detect brain abnormalities such as Alzheimer’s disease and epilepsy. Bringing its standards up another notch, Siemens’ Ysio x-ray system is also used by this internationally accredited hospital. The remarkable flexibility andimaging excellence of the wireless mobile detector (wi-D) of this equipment is designed to facilitate specific positioning imaging and provides superb image quality. The Bumrungrad today gives the assurance of Siemens’ cutting edge innovation, and its’ patients are assured of the promised merit of a prestigious healthcare provider.

Phraram 9 Hospital knows that advanced medical technology does come with a heart

A Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner sends radio waves through the body and collects the signal that is emitted from the hydrogen atoms in your cells. This information is collected by an antenna and fed into a sophisticated computer that produces the images. Siemens Avanto MRI scanner with Total Imaging Matrix (TIM) technology is brought into Phraram 9 Hospital where the best in class patient care is not an option. The hospital’s call to provide patient care as though they are “part of our family” explains why the Avanto is an obvious choice. With unmatched capability in outstanding image quality, it seamlessly scans up to 250cm without having to reposition or change coils. Quick and confident diagnosis can also be achieved in a wide variety of cases, such as strokes, musculoskeletal disorders and cancer. Avanto’s excellence goes beyond clinical requirements, but wholesomely designed with total care of patients’ comfort. Built solid yet with ultra-lightweight coils, the experience becomes a more comfortable experience for patients. A low table position also makes access easier for those with limited mobility, plus the noise emitted during scanning can be greatly reduced, making lengthy procedures more tolerable. The 60cm wide bore and option of feet first examinations also eases feelings of claustrophobia and is suitable for obese patients. That’s what they call thoughtful technology.

Thoughtful TechnologySiemens’ SOMATOM Definition cuts a breakthrough in CT imaging for top quality and comfort for patients across Thailand

Leading hospitals in Bangkok, both large public and private hospitals, such as Siriraj, Vichaiyuth hospitals and the prestigious Chulabhorn Cancer Center rely on Siemens’ highly advanced computed tomography system: the SOMATOM Definition. With two X-ray tubes and a dual-detector design, the equipment routinely provides images at twice the temporal resolution, twice the speed and twice the power of single-source systems. Its unique configuration also allows it to employ a number of dose-saving techniques that have not been realized on single-source scanners. The CT innovation is an ideal tool for one-stop diagnosis in acute care imaging, including the assessment of patients with acute chest pain, abdominal pain, and suspicions of stroke. The system enables faster and earlier diagnosis in acute care patients while maintaining the highest image quality, regardless of patient’s size and condition. Not only extraordinary features, but SOMATOM Definition also proves its worthiness to hospitals with financial benefit. The development of imaging performance and workflows provides hospitals with more capacity to increase number of cases while shortening scanning and diagnostic time and therefore reducing hospitals’ production cost. The superb imaging quality and comfort during scanning is not just limited to the city dwellers of Bangkok but also benefit those in the north as the same model is now installed in the Chiangmai University Hospital.

After the Tsunami

After the collapse of lives and even the hope to continue living, Siemens Thailand reached out to the tsunami survivors especially the young ones with a sustainable program in mind and a responsible attitude at heart.

When the disastrous tsunami hit the Andaman shores in December 2004, there were great devastations and losses to coastal villages and their local inhabitants. In Thailand alone, thousands of children became orphans and those who survived are in urgent need of clean water and shelters. Siemens Thailand, in cooperation with Thai Red Cross society under the Royal Patronage donated 6 mobile water filtration units for purifying water in Tsunami affected areas such as in Phang Nga and Krabi. Each water filtration unit is able to treat and produce up to 100,000 litres of potable water each day.

In addition to financial scholarships for 100 tsunami-orphaned students, the children from Phang-Nga

province were also given a new ray of hope when Siemens’ employees came down to pay them a visit. Also, instead of giving a one time visit before fleeing back to their normal lives, the employees were en-gaged in continuous activities such as a field trip to Bangkok and sustainable activities to foster unbroken bond and support between Siemens’ volunteers and the children.

Siemens Thailand also entered a joint initiative with the Thai-German Institute (TGI-ITS), the Vocational Ed-ucation Commission (VEC) and the Phang-Nga Province to build the “Academy and Community Center” at Ban Pruteaw, Ta Kua Pa district. The centre becomes the community centre to promote learning and also equip-ping them with professional and vocational skills ran-ging from construction, electrical, landscaping, hotel administration and foreign language.

What better way to rebuild eroded lives and shine a brighter future, than to empower the survivors to keep going on even stronger and better, one day at a time.

Siemens Caring HandsSiemens Caring Hands sets the pace and empowers our colleagues to reach out and give back to society. This corporate citizenship program encompasses a volunteer program in which employees are given a day off per year to undertake community work; and support for organizations and projects for the lessfortunate.

Answers for CommunityBeing responsible corporate citizens in each of the country Siemens operates in is a value that we hold close to heart. Here in Thailand, we have woven our commitment into caring for the young sprouting shoots of this historic land, from its people to its environment. To touch lives is an easy task, but to continuously inspire the lives of youth and mould them to carve their future is an ongoing effort that we have taken upon ourselves to do. Our employees from the Management to the grassroots have gone to lend their own caring hands and make a real difference for these communities and areas that we’ve pledged our commitment to. And it is all for one sole purpose - to leavebehind an intact environment for future generations.

Widen the Little World

Nothing opens up the minds of young children more than reading- and sometimes, our easy access to books makes us forget that not every child is as lucky to afford them. Siemens Thailand pioneered the Widen the Little World project, an ongoing effort to build libraries for needy rural schools. From erecting the infrastructure of conducive libraries to filling up the racks with books, learning materials and even sports equipments, we strive to give the little minds from all walks of lives the opportunity to open up their world, while laying a foundation for good education and a healthy lifestyle. More importantly the initiative is not just about giving access to reading but to cultivate an enjoyable experience of reading for those children who have not been intimately exposed to the enriching habit.

Mangrove Men at Work

As environmental concern is an embedded responsibility in Siemens’ business, Siemens Thailandhas put Earth Care as a focus area of activities as well. The most recent effort was a conservation program where 80 of our employees got down and dirty into the swamp of the Samut Songkram province to do an actual replanting of the Mangrove Plants. Known for its massive root systems, the shrubs were planted to protect the coast from erosions and storm surges. At the end of the program, a total of 1200 mangrove plants were replanted in its natural habitat to help restore the ecological balance at the Klong Khon district.

Leadership Excellence ProgramSiemens Leadership Excellence (SLE) is one of the signature programs, covering from junior management to executive classes. The courses are divided into 5 levels ranging from Manage-ment Course (MC), Advanced Management Course (AMC), General Management Course (GMC), Top Management Course (TMC) and Corporate Management (CMC). All courses aim at leveraging the experience of all leaders in Siemens by internal faculty with involve-ment of Top Management in combination with world-class external faculty. The participants profit from the concentrated knowledge and experience of Siemens management practice including skills development through interactive learning concept. In addition, the cross-group and cross-region network of Siemens managers is also enlarged through the SLE program.

Performance Management Process (PMP) This unique Siemens process enables employees to contribute peak performance by helping managers and employees determine their goals, continue their development, with clear reward structure related directly to the results achieved. It also allows an open and constructive feedback between manager and employee. During the PMP, it is possible for management to identify Top Talents and Key Experts and determine proper development measures for individual employees.

Expert Career To become the technology leader in many fields, Siemens has established a career track for key experts, along with a career path for manage-ment positions. For overall career management, employees are able to predict and develop their own career through development tools acces-sible from the Intranet. The tool also allows managers to use as a crucial guideline for deve-loping their own people and strengthening their team in order to optimize business pace.

Enlarge Global Talent Pool Within Siemens’ high-performance culture, we recognize Top Talents at an early stage and ensure their visibility and identification to the company in order to provide close support for their individual development plan. Top Talents at Siemens are visible to the Siemens global, not only to individual sector or country. All Top Talents are provided with a guideline for their individual development plan, in which Siemens’ executives take crucial part. In completing the individual development plan, a Top Talent toge-ther with the respective superior shall identify necessary actions and timeline to develop spe-cific knowledge, experience and capabilities. In addition, Top Talents have greater visibility with top management; this means assuming greater responsibility in projects, taking part in corpo-rate events and other business discussions with top management. As a Top Talent, the visibility to top management is a key benefit for acqui-ring a top management style and leadership experience.
