GENERAL INFORMATION

All models are freestanding dishwashers, they provide a choice of 8 wash programmes to suit load requirements. An LED display control unit allows the selection of the wash programmes, time delay, extra dry and half load. The display indicates, with the use of symbols, the selected programme, the progress of the programme, if the time delay and half load options have been selected. The appropriate symbol will also be displayed.Programme time left, low salt and rinse aid symbols are also shown on the display. If the machine detects a water leak in the base panel, this is also indicated on the display.

All programmes are selected by pressing the programme button (P). This selects the appropriate programme symbol on the LCD display. Once selected, pressing the Start/Reset button will start the programme. The selected programme can be cancelled at any time by pressing and holding the Start/Reset button. After 5 seconds a long beep will be heard followed by 3 short beeps. The programme will reset and a new programme can be selected.

The Mode button (M) on the console scrolls between the duo wash, time delay, extra dry and half load options. Once the desired option symbol has been selected, pressing the Select button (S) will enable the various settings of that function to be selected.

The Time Delay option can delay the start of the programme by up to 24 hours. The Half Load option allows dishes to be washed in either the upper or lower basket.Drying is achieved with a fan and condenser system (before Serial Number 50214.0000).Drying takes between 20 to 30 minutes depending on the programme selected. If Extra Dry has been selected, this increases the final rinse water temperature by 3°C and adds 5 minutes of residual drying. Two short beeps and 'END' flashing in the LCD display indicate the end of the programme.

The salt refill indicator utilises a counter system which is achieved by the control module counting the operations of the regeneration valve. It does not detect the presence of salt within the softener unit.

These dishwashers have features enabling a more efficient wash process.A turbidity sensor identifies the soil level of the dishes. The sensor modifies the wash time and temperature depending on the soil level of the pre-rinse water. An alternating wash valve connected to the circulation motor controls how water is delivered to the spray arms, giving a more efficient wash.A filter cleaning programme is incorporated that should blocked filters be detected, then a special programme is run to clean the filters. This feature only applies to the Intensive, Normal and Eco wash programmes and may extend the programme time by up to 40 minutes.A more detailed explanation can be found in the component description section of this manual.

Water hardness is adjusted by removing the salt container cap, and turning the arrowed adjuster towards the + or - minus indicator as required.

NOTE: -This manual covers models with Bit100 Electronics. From June 2006 DEA600 Electronics were used. Refer to manual 5407345.

COMPONENT DESCRIPTIONFill ValveThe appliance has an electromagnetically operated solenoid valve, which is connected to the water supply. As the machine fills, a quantity of water is diverted into the fill tank for later use in the regeneration sequence. A typical fill sequence is as follows:The water turbine fills the dishwasher with 2 litres of water. If the pressure switch contacts are then closed, then the turbine fills with another 2 litres of water to complete the fill. If, after the initial 2 litre fill, the pressure switch contacts are still open, the dishwasher will fill to a maximum of 6 litres. This initialises the filter cleaning procedure.Pressure SwitchThe pressure switch controls the overall volume of water inside the tub and signals if the heater can be turned on.Anti Flood DeviceConsisting of a polystyrene float and microswitch. An excess of water in the base panel operates the float switch sending a signal to the control module operating the drain pump and displaying a fault code on the console.Control ModuleMounted on the console, this is an electronic device that monitors and controls all devices within the appliance.Water TurbineConsisting of a fixed reed switch and a magnet fitted to an impeller. Unlike previous control systems, water fill is no longer dependant on the operation of the pressure switch. The turbine generates a series of impulses as the water rotates the impeller vanes. The control module translates these impulses into litres of fill water (217 impulses is equal to 1 litre of water). The turbine also regulates the maximum amount of water that can enter the tub, therefore acting as an overflow device. If the turbine fills the dishwasher with 2 litres of water and the pressure switch contacts are open, the pressure switch alarm is activated. If the turbine is faulty, then the pressure switch will control the fill. However, at the end of the cycle, the turbine faulty alarm will be displayed.Detergent & Rinse Aid DispenserDetergent and rinse aid is automatically released during the programme. The release mechanism is activated by means of a solenoid. This in turn operates a plunger and lever assembly, thus releasing detergent or rinse aid as required.Circulation Pump MotorThe motor used is a capacitor run motor. The pump housing is bolted to the motor body with the stainless steel shaft passing through a face seal in the pump with the pump impeller, with a ceramic seal counterface, mounted directly on the shaft.Drain PumpThis is a separate unit fixed to the sump moulding. It is operated by means of a synchronous motor and is controlled by the control module.HeaterThe heater is encased in a metal housing with integral safety cut-out, attached via hoses to the sump and the circulation motor.ThermistorSituated on the inner door panel adjacent to the dispenser. A temperature rise in the water is converted to a changing resistance value.A rise in temperature will give a lower resistance across the terminals of the thermistor; the control module monitors this value and when it is the same as that as defined in the programme selected, the module will advance the programme out of the heating stage.

Turbidity SensorSituated in the hose between the circulation motor and heater. It consists of an infrared transmitter and receiver and it has two function within the dishwasher, identifying the soil level and the presence of rinse aid. The analogue value it produces is sent to the control module for processing.During a cycle, e.g. the Pre-rinse, the soil level is measured with the circulation motor running.Dependent on the soil level determined by the turbidity sensor, the control module alters the cycle by reducing or increasing cycle times and temperatures of the subsequent stages. the sensor is calibrated from 0 (dirty water) to 245 (clean water). This is then converted to 10 different soil levels. The maximum turbidity level is equivalent to the longest cycle while the clearest reading corresponds to the shortest cycle. If the turbidity sensor detects the pre-rinse water still below a predefined level, it will perform another pre-rinse.The table below shows how the water turbidity affects the programme times and wash temperature.

Alternating Wash ValveThe alternating wash valve is fitted to the circulation motor pump housing. It consists of a vane and a small motor and controls how the water is delivered to the spray arms. The vane acts as a gate within the pump volute and is moved by the motor as required by the control module. Water is then pumped to the upper and/or lower spray arms depending on the programme selected or step within that programme. The three possible positions of the valve and how the water is delivered to the spray arms are shown below:

At the beginning of each programme, the machine will find the correct position by resetting the system. This also serves to avoid starting in the wrong position.

Turbo Dry Fan & Condenser - Fitted to models before Serial Number 50214.0000Mounted on the right hand side of the dishwasher, consisting of a condenser and fan. The fan creates a vacuum in the condensation chamber by sucking dry air (30% RH) from the side of the dishwasher and moist air (100%RH) from inside the dishwasher tub. As the two airflows meet, condensation is formed and falls to the bottom of the condenser. This is drained into the sump via a hose and finally is pumped away by the drain pump. The remaining air mix (55% RH) is vented near the top of the dishwasher.NOTE: - Models after Serial Number 50214.0000 use a Residual Heat Drying process.

Salt Refill Warning IndicatorSituated on the console, indicates when illuminated that the salt container requires refilling. When the salt container is filled for the first time it requires 1.5 - 2.0 kg of salt to be added. The warning light will stay illuminated for the first 5 cycles after filling with salt. On the 6th cycle, the light will be extinguished. The control module counts the activation of the regeneration valve and after the end of the 29th cycle, the machine fills with 600cc of water and turns on the warning light. The salt container then needs to be filled with 1.5 - 2 kg of salt. A further 600cc of water will then be displaced into the sump. This along with the previous 600cc will close the pressure contacts. At the start of the next cycle, the module detects the pressure switch closure and switches off the salt indicator light.Note: - If salt is added before the end of the 29th cycle, for example, at the 15th cycle, the indicator will be illuminated at the end of the 29th cycle. To overcome this situation, 2 litres of water should be poured into the dishwasher. This will close the pressure contacts and the control module will extinguish the indicator light the next time the machine is used.

Rinse Aid Warning IndicatorSituated next to the salt indicator, illuminates when the rinse aid reservoir requires refilling. The turbidity sensor achieves the detection of rinse aid, utilising the same principle as soil level detection. The final rinse water is measured 5 seconds before the rinse aid is dispensed and another reading is taken 1 minute after the rinse aid has been dispensed, The two readings are compared. If the value is different the rinse aid warning indicator is turned on at the end of the cycle, alerting the user to refill the rinse aid compartment.Half Load ButtonWhen selected allows the upper or lower basket to be selected to enable the half load feature. When selected, the half load LED illuminates on the LCD display. The half load feature should be selected before setting the main wash programme.Softener UnitSituated on the base of the dishwasher, water is fed from the air break unit into the base of the softener unit containing the sodium charged ion resins which remove calcium from hard water. The softened water now exits from the softener into the sump. After a number of fills in hardened water areas the softener resins become saturated with calcium ions and are unable to absorb any more. Consequently, further softening is not possible and for this reason it is necessary to wash the resins in a saline solution at the end of the final rinse cycle. When the regeneration solenoid is activated, the water that is held in the air break unit (200 ml) is gravity fed into the salt container, displacing the water already in the salt container. An amount of saline solution to be flushed through the softener unit will be predetermined by the setting of the Water Hardness Adjuster. The displaced water runs into the resin container to regenerate the resins. The ionic exchange lasts between 20 - 25 minutes. Two resin washes will then be performed. 1 litre of water is filled. This removes the salt water from the resins. This is then pumped out and a further 1 litre of water is filled to repeat the process.High Pressure SensorMounted on the sump adjacent to the filters, it consists of a microswitch connected to a diaphragm that is activated on contact with water. When the water pressure flowing through the filters in the dishwasher falls below the level required to wash efficiently (below 0.15 bar) the microswitch opens sending a signal to the control module. this activates the filter cleaning procedure.Filter Cleaning ProcedureThe dishwasher has a special feature that will clean the filters if a blockage is detected.

NOTE: - This feature only applies to the Intensive, Normal and Eco wash programmes and may extend the programme time by up to 40 minutes. The filter cleaning procedure can be initialised in two ways.1. If the Pressure Switch contacts do not close after the initial 2 litre fill via the water turbine.2. During circulation if it is detected that the Pressure Sensor contacts are open.

The principle of the filter-cleaning programme is to fill the dishwasher with a greater amount of water than in normal use (up to 6.5 litres). The circulation motor and heater are then pulsed Off and On. This breaks up the food debris blocking the filters allowing it to be pumped away. The filter cleaning sequence checks at the hot rinse step of the filter cleaning programme the state of the pressure sensor contacts. If the contacts are closed then the filter clean will complete and then the selected programme will resume. If the contacts are still open, then the hot rinse is repeated. If after this second hot rinse the contacts are still open, then the programme ends and displays the blocked filter alarm on the console.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Choose where you want to install your dishwasher, you can even place it so that its sides or back panel are side by side with furniture or up against the wall. The dishwasher is provided with water supply and drain hoses, which can be directed towards the left or right to facilitate appropriate installation.Easy to build-inThis dishwasher model can be built under a single worktop (please read the relevant instruction sheet).

LevellingOnce the appliance is positioned, adjust the feet by screwing them in or out depending on how high you want it and to level it so that it is horizontal. Make sure that it is not inclined more than 2 degrees. If the appliance is level, it will help ensure its correct operation. Cold Water ConnectionThis dishwasher should be connected to the water mains using the cold water supply hose provided with the appliance only. Do not use a different hose. In the event of replacements, use original spare parts only. Connect the cold water supply hose making sure that it is fastened tightly in place. If the water pipes are new or have not been used for an extended period of time, let the water run to make sure that the water is clear and free of impurities. If this precaution is not taken, there is a risk that the water inlet can get blocked and damage the appliance.

This Dishwasher MUST be EarthedOnly now can you plug the appliance into a socket provided with an efficient earth connection (the system's earthing is a guarantee of safety provided for by law, make sure your system has it).

Anti-flood ProtectionYour dishwasher is provided with a special system which blocks the water supply in the event of leaks inside the appliance.

Drain Hose ConnectionFit the drain pipe into a drain line with a minimum diameter of 4 cm or place it over the sink. Avoid restricting or bending it. Use the special plastic elbow provided (see figure) to position it in the best possible way. The part of the pipe marked with the letter A should be between 40 and 100 cm above the ground. The pipe should not be immersed in water.

Possible Reasons For Fault Code Displayed

Note: - Always carry out an earth insulation test before using the fault guide, an earth fault on a component or damaged wiring may display fault codes not related to the component signalled, e.g. an earth fault on the element can display A02.If any earth faults are found on initial testing they must be rectified before using the fault code chart, to avoid erroneous codes being displayed.Modern components especially modules are very reliable, therefore edge connectors, contacts and wiring should be thoroughly tested before trying components.

A01 The micro-switch in the base tray has been closed for 9 seconds to signal the alarm.Water is leaking from components or hoses in the base of the machine.Programme will abort and the drain pump will be energised.

A02 The module has detected movement of the turbine for 9 seconds when the inlet valve was notenergised. The inlet valve is letting water by when the valve is closed. The programme will be aborted and the drain pump is energised.Note: Earth faults on the heating element and wash pump can display A02.

A03 The drain pump has been energised for 4 minutes, but the pressure switch has not switchedto the empty position (contacts 11-12).

• The drain pump is fed from the wash pump; therefore an open circuit wash pump could stopthe drain pump from working.

• Check continuity of the pump coil.• A jammed drain pump or blockage in the outlet hose or plumbing.• A blocked pressure chamber or pressure switch air tube.• A faulty pressure switch.• Check wiring to pump and module connections.• If all the above are OK, replace the module.

A04 The module has detected either an open or short circuit on the thermistor or its associatedwiring.

A05 Filter blockedThe machine has tried to carry out the filter cleaning cycle but has failed to clear the blockage.

• Check the filter or sump is not blocked.• Check the pressure switch is not stuck in the empty position (contacts 11-12) or the

pressure chamber or air tube are either blocked, unattached or split.• Check the high pressure sensor or the connecting hose for blockages.• Check the wash pump is circulating the water.• Check the wiring to the pressure switch and high pressure sensor.• Check the edge connector blocks on the pressure switch and module card.• Check the outlet hose is not too low causing the machine to siphon.• If all the above tests are OK replace module card.

Aborts the cycle and energises the drain pump.

21

Page 22: Hotpoint Ultima Electronics - Indesit Companyservicenet.indesitcompany.com/data/img_sm/5412771.pdf · Hotpoint Ultima Freestanding Dishwashers with Bit100 Electronics Models Covered:-FDW80

A06 Time out for filling. The module has not detected turbine rotation with the inlet valve energised.

• Check the taps are turned on and that the fill hoses are not kinked.• Check the inlet valve coil (4k ohms approximately) and wiring to valve and edge connector

on module.• Check the wiring and connector blocks to module and inlet valve.• If all above tests are OK, replace turbine or module as required.

Aborts the cycle and energises the drain pump.

A08 Time out for water heating. The module has not detected temperature increase in 60 minutes.

• Check that the thermistor is not detached from the inner door panel.• The thermistor is out of calibration.• The wash pump is not circulating the water.• Check the element is heating, and the TOC is not opening after a time.• If all above tests are OK replace module card.

A09 Module recognition error.• Either a faulty module card or the module card is not communicating with the display.• Check edge connections and wiring.• Replace module or display as required.

A10 Open circuit in heating circuit.• Check the circuit of the heating element (26 ohms).• Check for an open circuit heater cut-out.• Check pressure switch open circuit (connections 11-14).• Check wiring and connections between module card, pressure switch and heater.• If all above is OK, replace module card.

NOTE: -• If the pressure switch moves to the empty position during heating, A10 will display.• If A10 displays intermittently, if the spray arms are not able to rotate correctly, the heater will

overheat and the cut-out will operate displaying A10.

Filling FaultsTurbine faulty. The machine will proceed as if the fill process was controlled by the pressure switch. At the end of the cycle A06 will be displayed.Pressure Switch Faulty. The machine will signal A05 at the end of the filling stage.Turbine and Pressure Switch Faulty. The machine will fill with a maximum of 8 litres of water in a specified time.Solenoid Fills when Off. The display will signal A02.

NOTE: - There is no fault code for a faulty wash pump.A faulty wash pump could display A03, A05, A08 or A10 depending at what stage of the cycle the wash pump fails.
