PRESIDENT’S RAMBLE

Much has happened since my last report, but not many local events for Lin and me, as we have put around

3,000 kms on our Austin 1800 Ute, in the Barossa and Adelaide.

This gives other club members the chance to report about other events which we were absent for.

We set off for the Barossa Valley in our Ute, to take part in the ‘National Austins Over Australia’ rally.

Travelling with us were Ken and Daina Trethewey who, with their 1956 Jaguar XK 140, were entered in the

Bay to Birdwood run, as were we, following Austin’s over Australia.

AOA was a well organised and interesting event held over 4 days. Each morning all 168 cars met in the

impressive grounds of Chateau Tanunda, where breakfast was served , prior to a round of Rocker Cover

Races.

The day was then spent touring the magnificent Barossa Valley, which was so green, it was almost

luminescent !

We have owned our Ute for 19 years and this is the first time we have ever seen 4 Austin utes together,

including previous AOA rallies.

One afternoon for a short while, we swapped cars, with a couple who owned one of the very large 4 litre

Austin Princesses. Surrounded by leather and walnut veneer, it resembled a mobile gentleman’s club. Very

nice, where’s the butler ?

During the rally, people asked after Ted and Joan Strahan, and wished to be remembered to them.

Next -- in Adelaide, meeting up with Ken and Daina in Glenelg, we participated in the Bay to Birdwood

run. If you think 168 cars constitutes a fair number, how about 1,756 entries ! This has to be the premier

classic car rally in Australia.

The vehicles wind their way 70 kms up into the hills to the National Motor Museum at Birdwood. The

route is lined with thousands of spectators, picnicking and cheering.

The museum grounds and paddocks are large enough for all the vehicles which this year ranged from 1956

to 1986. A golf buggy would have been handy to see them all.

In addition to the vehicle exhibits, there was a live band, stalls, and food outlets.

During the afternoon a fashion parade saw 90 entries in period dress, the winners being presented their

awards by the Governor of South Australia. The Governor also presented the Concours D’Elegance trophy,

to the owner of a tiny BMW Isetta. There were approximately 30 contestants, with pristine vehicles, vying

for the top award.

Adelaide is just about 1000kms from Cootamundra, but well worth the trip.

Next year Bay to Birdwood will celebrate 40 years. Entries are open to Veteran, Vintage, and Classic

vehicles. The event is limited to 1,750 in number, so will be from selected applications .

With regard to our club’s business, next year’s entries are steadily climbing for our 40th birthday

celebrations, with currently approximately 85 people entered for the Saturday Dinner, so far.

Most of the photos for our 2020 calendar have been taken. Thank you to all concerned, and by the time

you receive this magazine, the donations from the club’s Swap Meet in September, will have been

distributed, according to our club members’ decisions.

Yours with Grace, Space and Pace

Mal

P. S. In the 1930’s a very small number of Austin’s were fitted with an infinitely variable ratio gear box

known as a Hayes transmission. Only 2 were known to exist in the Southern Hemiphere ; 1 in New Zealand

and 1 in Australia.

The NZ one now resides on the NSW central coast, and was at the AOA rally in the Barossa. The other one,

believe it or not, is our club member Bob Newman’s car here in Cootamundra. Bob’s car, a 1934 Austin

16 York, will soon be on the road again , thanks to Bob and Alan Thompson.

EDITORIAL --- Looking back over 40 years . . . . . 40 years ago -- Noel Ritchie was the President of Cootamundra Antique Motor Club.

1983 -- Michael Livingstone took over the reins of President.

He voiced disappointment that the granting of Concessional Registration to vehicles aged over 30 years was being hindered by the

Bush Council. Bush Council executive disapproved of Post-Vintage cars in the clubs.

Despite this, by November, Secretary Geoff Cowled announced at the December Meeting that vehicles aged over 30 years could

now get Concessional Registration.

1984 -- President Michael and Treasurer John Collins attended a Meeting planning Cootamundra’s Bicentenary Celebrations

just to offer our club’s cars in any Procession. Guess What? Michael ended up President of Cootamundra’s Planning Committee.

1984 -- Secretary Peter Close announced that Robert Newman was joining the club with a 1934 limousine AUSTIN York.

And we would be joining with Temora and Young clubs to visit Tom Berryman’s collection of antique vehicles in August.

Registration Inspectors -- Frank DeBritt and Brian Richards, inspected:

John Collins’ 1927 Ford Michael Livingstone’s 1928 woody Gwen’s 1928 Ford Tudor

Brian Richard’s 1928 Ford Noel Ritchie’s 1928 Ford Peter Close’s 1938 Pontiac

Bruce Watson’s 1939 Anglia John Collins’ 1948 Plymouth Greg Strachan’s 1951 Austin A40

Ted Strachan’s 1954 Austin A40 Brian Richard’s 1954 Holden

Back to . November 2019 :

Don’t forget that our club has been invited to show cars at the Cootamundra Public School’s Fete -

Saturday 2 November. This Saturday! Next event! Ten years ago our club made a donation to the Canberra Museum - to the Appeal to Restore a 1948 DAIMLER four-ton Landaulette to the condition it was

when it was used to chauffeur Queen Elizabeth in 1954.

2019 the restoration was completed. The car was exhibited at Wakefield Park Raceway on 17 August. Did any member witness it? You could have said – “Our club helped.”

November 2019 -- This month Joan and I will be attending Bendigo Swap. There are 1,700 sites! (Compare to our Swap that

had over 330.) Admission is $15 on Saturday and $5 on Sunday. (Joan will have to wait outside the gate . . . )

Vehicles on show will be from the Veteran, Vintage & |Classic Club of Bendigo . . to mark that club’s 50th

anniversary!

John Simp. has discovered a method - HOW TO CLEAN UP RUST As we all know the chrome wheels on motor bikes are a lot different in their quality of finish.

The first ones to show signs of rust are Japanese motorcycles.

The following is a process that I have used successfully on my wheel rims.

1. Hydrochloric Acid ( Spirits of salts) used in swimming pools and cleaning brickwork.

2. One Tea spoon of Bi-Carb Soda, premixed in a cup of hot water ( dissolves better )

3. Good wash off with water, by hose.

4. Coat of Autosol.

Procedure as follows. Brush on acid with a brush. I used a 1 1/2” soft bristle,

as it gets around the nipples better than a hard bristle brush. Leave for 5 minutes.

Then apply a good coat of Bi-Carb Soda mix.

Leave for 5 minutes. Then wash off with a good spray of water.

When thoroughly dry, apply a coat of Autosol to shine.

Note: Be careful around your paint work. Thanks, John.

PAST EVENTS

Here we are at the Fire-Engine Muster at Coolamon Sunday 6 October. Plymouth, Spitfire, V12, Mk2, VW

1976 Bedford bus, Torana SS and that’s a 1937 Standard. And there’s 100 other vehicles and fire-engines at this annual event.

Below: Here we are at Ulandra Nature Reserve. A Mid-Week run.

We enjoyed a walk through the forest. So recommended! We found an abandoned homestead, (burnt down), and examined

some abandoned machinery. Denis can certainly lead us to some gems! A secluded wilderness all to ourselves!
