Principal’s Report-Term 3

Student Voice

One of the questions which our school councillors had to answer at their workshop last week was what might ‘student voice’ be like at Hopetoun P-12 College in five years’ time. Student voice is where students have a say in the organisation and running of the school and they have input at the classroom level around what and how they are learning. Students currently have opportunities for input. They have an active SRC which organises a range of events and activities. They also have two representatives on School Council, Amalie and Angelika. I held a student forum at the end of last term to get their views on a range of matters. We also have some events coming up over the next few weeks for students to learn about as well as provide input on interesting issues. A group of four students will be attending a forum on Respectful Relationship which is an anti-family violence initiative tomorrow in Horsham. Another group (Year 7 and 8 students) will be attending the Yarriam-biack Youth Summit next week.

The Youth Summit has a wonderful range of guest speakers who will raise awareness and knowledge about a range of social issues and perspectives around cyber bullying, internet safety and youth affairs.

I spoke at assembly on Tuesday to provide a brief report on our student forum. Two things which the students reported that are going really well are the SWPBS shop and they loved the musical performance which was held at assembly at the end of last term. Two suggestions for improvement were all students should be in school uniform and they would like the area around the old library and small shade shelter completed. There were other suggestions which I will hand on to the SRC to discuss. Students also have the opportunity to pro-vide feedback to us through the annual Student Attitude to School Survey. There are many opportunities for student voice here at Hopetoun and, in five years’ time, I have no doubt that the input of students will be even greater.

Immunisations & Speed Field Days

Please be aware that we have immunisations for 15 to 19 year old students on Wednesday 2nd August. It is essential that students attend school on Wednesday 2nd so that vaccinations can be undertaken. We are aware that this clashes with day 1 of the Speed Field days however we hope that if you are supporting the Field Days that you attend as a family on Thursday. Our VCAL students will be involved with the field days by doing prepa-ration work on Tuesday 1st August then attending as a group on Thursday 3rd August.

Acceleration program

Students are given many opportunities to excel in their studies, especially where they want to take on extra challenges and extend themselves. Year 10 students have the opportunity to ‘accelerate’ next year by access-ing a Year 11 subject as part of their normal Year 10 studies. We are holding an information session tonight to outline the expectations and requirements for students to accelerate their studies.

Parents & Friends

There was an excellent turn-up at the Parents and Friends meeting last night. Some of the areas discussed in-cluded the forthcoming Speed Field Days, changes to suppliers of school uniforms, Father’s Day stall, end-of-term luncheon and dates for a range of end-of-year activities. Planning is also underway for the 2018 Presen-tation Ball.

Parent Survey

I alerted you to the forthcoming online parent survey through last week’s newsletter. The link to the survey will be available on Friday 4th August and the survey portal will be open for you to input your responses during the period Monday 7th August to Sunday 27th August.

Every Day Counts In order to learn to the best of their abilities, children must come to school

regularly.

What does acceptable attendance look like?

Coming to school every day. Arriving before the morning bell. Only being absent for genuine illness or family crisis Coming to school even though we feel like sleeping in, going shopping

or doing other things with the family. Not going away on holidays outside of the school holiday period.

When children attend school every day they:

Develop better social skills and make more friends; Have a better and more consistent schooling. Learn more. Are able to meet and work better with others. Develop greater resilience, particularly in dealing with problems. Develop a strong connectedness to Hopetoun P-12.

So how well are we doing? What year level ‘slam dunked’ their attendance this week and knows that Every Day Counts?

Week one results:

Congratulations Grade P-3 and Grade 4-6,

you are this week’s every day counts champions.

Today I Am Really Grateful For……

...our Australian farmers. They work so hard to put food on the table for themselves and everyone else in the world. Australia has the largest goat and camel exports in the world so if it wasn’t for Australian farms no-one would be able to fulfil the demand for those ani-mals. People think that farming is easy and that we have all the time in the world on our hands. If we have a day like that, it is a day that is lost and cannot be brought back. Farming is physically and mentally tough; it has the highest suicide rates in rural communities. Not many people know that and don’t realise that troubled farmers just have to carry on with their normal day. Flynn

Today I’d be really grateful for not being as anxious as I am every day. It would help get rid of some of the unwanted pressure and would help me be more adventurous and brave. I would be able to do things I want to do but can’t because my anxiety stops me, for example travelling and speaking in front of new people. This is hard for me to do without worrying but I believe if I keep trying I won’t worry as much. Montana

Today, in the way that we live now, I am grateful for all of the people who have come up with the ways to cure diseases and help people through problems. Without them, we would not be at the stage that we are now. Simple illnesses that are easy to treat nowadays would have easily killed many people years ago. There are still people now trying to figure out cures and hopefully, eventually they will get there. Mali

Today I am grateful for being raised here and for my parents raising me how they did. While I was at Gnurad, my roommate said that it was nice there because she had never seen so many stars before because of the light pollution where she lives. She also said she had over 300 people in her year level! I’m grateful for my friends who love and accept me for who I am and, last but not least, I’m grateful for the unconditional love I receive from my family. Tegan

The Time Harry Potter Came to My House

It was 7 am and I woke to someone knocking on my door. It was Harry Potter! I was extremely excited but then it hit me that someone might be following him; it was a bit suspicious that he would rock up to my house unannounced so I closed the door immediately and called the cops. They came and arrested him - it turned out that he was working for Voldemort and Voldemort wanted a Muggle to work for him. Oliver

One day Harry Potter came to my house - he was a cool person but he was always putting spells on me and it got annoying. Harry put a spell on me where I could not get up off the couch - then he went outside and I could not go because I was stuck on the couch. However, Harry taught me some really cool spells. Jonty

My Great-Great-Great Grandfather Gave Me 3 Rules to Live By…

1 Don’t believe what people say unless it is true, 2 Stay strong and brave, 3 Make your future unbelievable. Cheyanne

Rule 1: Always listen to your parent and other family members, Rule 2: If you become rich, you have to give half to me, Rule 3: If you become famous, do not be cocky like all the other professionals. Ben

“Listen here girl, I’ve lived by these three rules my whole life. Now it’s your turn,” my Grandad said. I was trying to listen to him but everyone knows how hard it is to not look at your phone when it is going off its head!“ Rule 1: (His voice booming through my ears) No matter what happens always have love in your heart. Rule 2: Always tell someone you need them especially if you love them. Rule 3: Never lie to someone you love…well bam out the window went Rule 3 - a little white lie cannot hurt can it? Bryndal

1. Stay honest no matter what the situation is and no matter how much trouble you could get into. 2. Give everything your very best and don’t let others tell you not to try, because if you listen to them you may not get the opportunities that you want. 3. Make sure, whatever you do, that you are happy and do not let others destroy your happiness. Sharky

Hello everybody, I’m glad you could all make it. Before we start eating I would like to thank everybody for attending, but I would also like to make a toast - to my great, great grandfather. About ten years ago, my great, great grandfather passed away. I was eight at the time but I can still remember his final words, as if he told me them yesterday… “Promise me Tom, that you will live your life with these two rules in mind. The first rule is that you should live every day as if it is going to be your last, because one day it will be. The second is to always listen to your heart. There have been so many situations where I have listened to what other people thought, and so many times I have regretted it, please don’t make the same mistakes that I have made…I believe in you… These two rules have inspired me and since that day I have followed them; sure, I have still done things that I regret, but I would never change them because if I did I might not be friends with all of you and I might not have had the privilege to be in a relationship with “My Beautiful Puddle”. Thank you all for coming to my 18th and I hope everybody enjoys themselves, cheers! Dallas
