The word advent comes from the Latin adventus, meaning coming into view, arrival or appearance. When capitalized, Advent refers to the season of the church year we begin this Sunday — a four-week time of fasting before the feasting of the Nativity of Christ.

Most years you wouldn’t know Advent is penitential. There’s little evidence of self-disci-pline in the weeks leading to Christmas. The tree goes up, ornaments are hung, lights are strung. Christmas music plays all month long as if there’s nothing to wait for. Parties for every social group we belong to speckle the season.

This year is different. We are forced to reflect and challenged to protect. The advent of COVID-19 is a physical pandemic and a spiritual parable at the same time. It’s not just about a contagious virus, it is also about the state of our hearts toward our neighbors. Are we careful out of love or careless in our freedom?

While coronavirus attacks the underlying conditions in our body that we have failed to attend to, it also exposes the unseen condition of our souls. Our fears about our mortality and the judgment of God upon our manner of life are acute right now.

Meditating upon the coming of Christ brings judgment into view. We cannot go on forever without a reckoning, or what’s the point of morality? And yet, our fear gives way to hope when we realize that the one who comes in judgment on us is the same one who comes in mercy for us. Whether we experience Christ’s advent as more hope or fear depends upon our spiritual preparation.

Think of it this way: if you knew Christ was coming to your house in the weeks ahead but didn’t know precisely when he would arrive, how would you prepare? More than likely, you would begin to make your house a fitting home for him — clean, light, welcoming. And if so, you would live in hope of his arrival more than in fear of it.

In the Phillips Brooks carol, “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” we find these words about the place where the holy family found no room at the inn: “… the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.”

Let’s make this Advent a time of more hope than fear.

Peace be to you and grace from him who freed us from our sins,Who loved us all and shed his blood that we might saved be.

Sing holy, holy to our Lord, the Lord, Almighty God,Who was and is and is to come; sing holy, holy, Lord!

Rejoice in heaven, all ye that dwell therein,Rejoice on earth, ye saints below, for Christ is coming soon!

E’en so, Lord Jesus, quickly come, and night shall be no more; They need no light nor lamp nor sun, for Christ will be their all!

Lighting the Candle of Hope Shana, Ron and Abigail Gaines

Litany

Leader: The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteous-ness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: “The Lord is our righteousness.” (Jeremiah 33:14-16)

People: Prepare a way for the Lord!

Leader: Today we light the Prophet Candle of Hope, signifying our steadfast faith that, de-spite the darkness all around, the Word of God will become flesh among us and the glory of the Lord will appear to us.

People: Prepare a way for the Lord!

Leader: As we wait for the night of Christ’s birth, grant us grace to heed the warnings of the prophets, to cast away the works of darkness and put on the armor of light as we worship God in fullness.

People: Prepare a way for the Lord!

Psalm Reading — Psalm 80:1-7, 17-19 Candy McComb

Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock! You who are enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh. Stir up your might, and come to save us! Restore us, O God; let your face shine, that we may be saved. O Lord God of hosts, how long will you be angry with your people’s prayers? You have fed them with the bread of tears, and given them tears to drink in full measure. You make us the scorn of our neighbors; our enemies laugh among themselves. Restore us, O God of hosts; let your face shine, that we may be saved …But let your hand be upon the one at your right hand, the one whom you made strong for yourself. Then we will never turn back from you; give us life, and we will call on your name. Restore us, O Lord God of hosts; let your face shine, that we may be saved.

Pastor de Israel, tú que guías a José como a un rebaño, tú que reinas entre los querubines, ¡escúchanos! ¡Resplandece delante de Efraín, Benjamín y Manasés! ¡Muestra tu poder, y ven a salvarnos!

Gospel Reading — Mark 13:24–37 Tim Krause

“But in those days, after that suffering, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in clouds’ with great power and glory. Then he will send out the angels, and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven. From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. But about that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Beware, keep alert; for you do not know when the time will come. It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his slaves in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch. Therefore, keep awake — for you do not know when the mas-ter of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or at dawn, or else he may find you asleep when he comes suddenly. And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake.”

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gracias a Dios.

Tapestry News & AnnouncementsNovember 29, 2020

Keep up with all the Wilshire news at wilshirebc.org or on social media or via the Wilshire app. At present we are worshiping online only. Worship premieres Sundays at 8:30 a.m. on Wilshire’s YouTube channel and website.

Sanctuary open for Honest Advent Experience

8

Wilshire’s Sanctuary will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. each Sunday during Advent for

“Hopes & Fears: An Honest Advent Experience.” The exhibit, which begins Nov. 29 and ends Dec. 20, represents the first opportunity for most con-gregants to be in the Sanctuary since March 8.

According to Associate Pastor Heather Mus-tain, the offering came about largely in response to feedback from members wishing spaces at the church could be accessible even as worship re-mains online. “The Sanctuary means so much to so many people,” Mustain says. “We wanted to open it in a safe, responsible way that also meets the liturgical moment.” Mustain notes that the Sanctuary will be decorated for the season.

Honest AdventThe experience is based around the work of

Scott Erickson, an Austin-based painter, illustra-tor and self-described “creative curate.” His 2020 book, Honest Advent: Awakening to the Wonder of God-with-Us Then, Here, and Now, features his artwork along with 25 daily meditations.

According to the publisher, the book “creates a space for you to encounter the Incarnate

Christ in unexpected places: like a pregnancy announcement in an era of political unrest and empirical bloodshed, the morning sickness of a Middle Eastern teenager, and the shocking biol-ogy of birth that goes far beyond the sanitized brand of Christmas as we know it.”

Visitors to the Honest Advent Experience will make their way through various stations featur-ing Erickson’s art along with Scripture, prayers, prompts for reflection and interactive elements.

Hanging of the Green videos due Dec. 1Hanging of the Green, which airs Dec. 6, will include a video montage of congre-gants decorating their homes for Christmas. Please submit a video (10 seconds max) of someone from your household placing an ornament, hanging a wreath, etc. Videos are due Dec. 1 and can be sent via text message or email to David Hammons at 214-499-3998 or [email protected]. We know it may be a little early for you to be deco-rating; you may have to stage these scenes for the purpose of shooting your video. We appreciate your help in making this year’s event special.

Order Sanctuarypoinsettias by Dec. 2

Help decorate the Sanctuary for the upcoming Advent season. Although we are not worshiping in the building this year,

the poinsettias will be visible in our online worship and other videos. Just as in years past, the festive flowers will be provided by congregants in honor or in memory of loved ones, friends, family members and teachers, and dedications will be listed in the worship folder on Dec. 6. Each plant costs $10, and orders can be placed online at wilshirebc.org/registration. The deadline for ordering is Wednesday, Dec. 2.

Materials will be updated week-ly, so congregants are encour-aged to visit each week.

The experience will take about 15 minutes, and house-hold units will move through it as a group. Each visitor will receive a tapered candle and a

postcard-sized print of an Erickson illustration. Advance sign-up is required, and a separate

SignUpGenius link for each week can be found at wilshirebc.org/advent.

Giving TreesAttendees on the first

two Sundays of the Hon-est Advent Experience are encouraged to stop by the Narthex to select a tag from Wilshire’s Giving Tree. Each tag represents the Christ-mas wishes of a child or adult served by one our local mission partners.

Two virtual Giving Trees will also be offered. Visit wilshirebc.org/advent to find links where you can sign up for wishes to fill. Gifts are due back Dec. 2 or Dec. 9, depending on agency deadlines.

Gifts may be dropped off at the church office from 1 to 5 p.m. on Nov. 29 and Dec. 6, on Wednesdays during Koinonia Café To Go pickups or by arrangement with Abbey Adcox. Contact Abbey at [email protected] with questions or for more information.

Mustain says the Honest Advent Experience and the Giving Tree together represent “inward reflection and outward action — to prompt us to be the incarnate Christ in the world.”

Blood drive Dec. 5Carter Blood Care will have a bus in

Wilshire’s south parking lot on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please consider stopping by to donate. Blood is always essential, but it is crucial to maintaining a healthy blood supply during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thousands of blood drives have been cancelled since March, resulting in more than 52,000 lost blood donations.

The minimum age to donate is 16, and those under 18 will need parental consent. The permission forms are located on the Carter website and will also be available onsite.

Carter is also offering COVID-19 antibody testing on successful donations. Donors can retrieve their results within one to two weeks through a secure portal on Carter’s website.

The safety of blood donors and Carter staff members is top priority. All blood drive setups will comply with Food and Drug Administration social distancing and sanitation protocols. Staff and donors are required to wear masks.

To reduce wait times and help with social distancing, appointments are encouraged and donors can fill out the medical history questionnaire online before coming (carterbloodcare.org/quickscreen). The form can also be accessed by downloading the Carter BloodCare app on any mobile device. Carter BloodCare limits the number of donors on each bus and creates greater space between donors’ beds at indoor blood drives.

To make an appointment, visit https://ww3.greatpartners.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/117216.

Pray for Wilshire health care workers

Rapid-response teams availableHealth Response Team is comprised of medical professionals in the church who are willing to make themselves available for general counsel and encouragement. These volunteers are not dis-pensing medical care but are available for general questions and guidance, especially when it may be harder to get to a doctor. Lead contact is Linda Garner, [email protected] or 214-452-3151. Food and Supplies Response Team is comprised of volunteers from our Missions and Ad-vocacy committees who are at the ready to help those who are isolated and need food or other supplies brought to them. We have identified existing designated and budget funds that will be used to meet urgent needs of members, such as food and medicine and limited rent assistance. Lead contact is Heather Mustain, [email protected] or 214-452-3110. Spiritual Support Response Team is comprised of trained lay leaders and staff who are available to talk with members who are lonely, scared or just need to talk during this time of isolation. This is not a substitute for professional counseling. Volunteers will call care receiv-ers on at least a weekly basis to listen to them and offer emotional support. Other referrals for additional identified needs will be made to the appropriate teams or staff. Lead contact is Gail Brookshire, [email protected].
