From ourHonoraryPresident

Laores aNo GeNrr-unrN,I extend a very warmwelcome to you all thisevening, in this the 75thAnniversary Year of Inver-ness Opera Company.

It is interesting to note that when the Companywas formed in 1925, their first production was ofThe Mikado, performed in the 'Old Central HallsPicture House'. Later this was re-named 'TheEmpire Theatre' after a stage was provided. Vhenthe Empire Theatre closed in 1970, the Companymoved to the Playhouse Cinema - then came thedisastrous fire when it burnt down in 1972.However, true to the saying'the show must go on',the Company continued with productions in theRoyal Academy and High School halls until theopening ofEden Court Theatre in 1976.

I am sure you will agree that a tremendous debtof gratitude is due to the many amateur artists who, over the past 75 years, have presented wonderfulproductions in a very professional manner.Tonight's performance is the result of dedicatedrehearsals which commenced last September, and Iam sure you will enjoy this 75th Anniversary pro-duction of Fiddler on the Roof.

Fiddler on the Roof was first presented arthe Imperial Theatre, New York on 22ndSeptember 1964 and ran for 3,242 perform-ances. It was first produced in London at HerMajesty's Theatre on l6th February 1967where it ran for 21030 performances.

The famous Jewish actor Chaim Topol is syn-onymous with the role of Tevye, the milkman, which he has performed all over the world. Inl97l a film version appeared, starring Topoland directed by Norman ]ewison.

Inverness Opera Company first performed theshow in 1973 and again in 1983. In tonight'sperformance, as on both previous occasions, the role ofTevye is being played by Inverness'own Topol, Scott Don!

The Story of Fiddler on the RoofA fiddler sits on the roof of the home of Tevye, themilkman, in the small Russian village of Anatevka. It is 1905, towards the end ofTsarist rule. The pre-cariousness ofthe musician and the solitary beautyof his music sum up the situation of the village'sJewish population, whose strengths in changingtimes are their cultural and religious roots. On a

personal level, such changes are evident in the mar-riage arrangements for Tevye and his wife Golde'sfive daughters. Yente, the matchmaker, hasarranged for Tzeitel, the eldest, to marry the wid-owed butcher Lazar. Tzeitel, however, wants tomarry for love, not money, setting her sights on thedestitute tailor Motel, a childhood friend. Thethree sisters Tzeitel, Hodel and Chava sing of theirplight.

Tevye returns from a hard day's work with hiscarthorse lame. He politely enquires of Godwhether it would make all that much difference tothe scheme of things if a little more good fortunecould come his way. The village also learns, fromuniversity student Perchik, that the authorities areevicting Jews from some surrounding villages.Although Perchik's views are a little too revolu-tionary for him, Tevye takes the young man into hishome for the Sabbath meal.

Although Tevye does not care for Lazar he recog-nises him as a good match for TzeiteI, and the twomen toast the arrangement. Things are not goingwell. There is news of anti-Jewish demonstrationsin the village. Back home, Perchik encourages the

daughters to question family values, and Tzeiteltells her father that she loves Motel. Tevye finallygives in to Tzeitel, and Motel is delirious. In orderto persuade Golde to accept the new arrangement,Tevye invents a dream in which her grandmotherhas told him that Tzeitel will marry Motel. At thewedding, Tevye and Golde grow mellow and medi-tative. tadition is broken again when Perchiktakes Tevye's daughter Hodel to the dance floor, formen and women cannot dance together in public.Tevye covers by taking Golde onto the floor, but theceremony is suddenly terminated by an anti-Jewishdemonstration.

Perchik wants to return to the city where revolu-tion is brewing and Hodel agrees to their engage-ment. Tevye and Golde are startled at how love nowcomes first, before tradition, unlike in their day.

News arrives that Perchik has been arrested inKiev, and Hodel determines to go to him and getmarried, despite her fear of leaving her home.

Things continue to break down. Tevye's thirddaughter, Chava, falls in love with a Russian, andshe then decides to ignore her father and marryoutside the faith. The pogroms are now upon them, and the village's Jewish community reluctantlyadmit that they must leave. Chava and her husbanddepart for Cracow, but the rest of the family headfor the safety of America. As the fiddler departswith them, everyone mourns the loss of theirvillage.
