Dress up any party or special occasion with this easy to make, yet impressive banner. I have seen these banners at parties planned by professional party planners! I knew I could easily make them myself and now you can too!

What you need:Scrapbook Paper Glue StickScissors Hole PunchComputer and Printer Ribbon

How to:Open a Word Doc. on your computer. Choose a font on the computer you like and change the font size to around 300. Some fonts are wider than others, so play with the font until you get a size you like.

Print out your letters on scrap paper (junk mail works fine), and hold a printed letter on a piece of scrapbook paper. Cut around the printed letter shape and you will have a perfect letter cut out on your scrapbook paper without using a fancy letter punch.

Use your cut out letters as a guide, and draw out a triangle shape that the letter will fit on. Use your first triangle as your pattern and make as many as you will need for the letters you are using for your birthday message.

Use a glue stick to attach the letters to the triangles.

Use a hole-punch to punch one hole on each cor-ner of the top of the triangles. String ribbon through the holes and spread out the triangles as you wish.

Hang up your banner and you are finished! You can have a professional look without spending much. For this, and over 20 other “Do-It-Yourself” birthday party ideas, including custom cupcake picks, party game ideas, and the awesome balloon towers you see in the photo visit www.karascreativeplace.blogspot.com and click on “birthday stuff” link on the right side of the page. n

Great for Birthday parties!

Private parties available • Ages 6 +• Private parties from $100-$200• Includes a Private party coach

who takes care of everything, including pictures!

The children. The toys. The cake. The games. There is so much going on at birthday parties, it’s no wonder kids (and parents) get overwhelmed. But heading to birthday parties this summer doesn’t have to be stressful for you or your children. “Birthday parties are actually one of the best ways to get your child involved in peer interaction,” says Laura Schuldt, Registered Play Therapist Supervisor at Avera Behavioral Health Outpatient Services. “It’s a great opportunity for kids to have positive interactions with each other.” Schuldt says not only is this a good chance to develop relationships with other kids, it also lets children adapt to social rules.

If you are the one giving the party, Schuldt suggests including games where everyone can be included. If you are planning on having younger children at the party, think about introducing a game where physical activity is involved. Schuldt says you could also give away a party bag, which can make everyone feel special.

If you’re the one attending the party, before you head out, Schuldt recommends you sit down with your child and talk about what they can expect. “I always tell parents to set up positive expectations and anticipation. I would explain to them there is going to be a lot happening. There will be games, cake, and let kids, especially younger kids, know that the focus is going to be on another child.” This is an excellent way to teach your children about generosity and

giving. “Children understand that we give (gifts) because we care,” Schuldt says.

You should also make sure your child is well rested and fed. “You don’t want to walk into the party with a child who is already tired or hungry,” says Schuldt. For children who are overwhelmed with the activity, which is common, Schuldt recommends taking a walk with the

child or children. This allows some time away to regroup from all the action.

Some parents have a difficult time with chil-dren not wanting to leave the excitement. Schuldt

encourages parents to use closing statements to allow a good transition to exiting the party. “Tell the child we are leaving soon and that they need to say goodbye to their friends,” she says. “Validate them by saying something like ‘You had a great time today. Maybe we can set up another time to play next week.’ Show the child that just because play time might be over today, it isn’t over for good.” Schuldt also suggests as you’re going home, give specific encourag-ing feedback to your child. “You could say ‘I like how you let Billy open his own presents today. I know that was hard for you but I’m really proud of you.’”

By keeping these tips in mind, your next birthday party adventure will be a fun, positive experience for everyone involved. But remember perhaps the most important rule of them all: have fun with your child! After all, you’re exposing them to a lesson they’ll take with them the rest of their life, which is learning how to positively interact with others! n

To-Do List!!2 Days B

efore

Day of the Party

You have 101 things to do to plan for this party, so where do you begin? How do you not forget the clown candleholders and the glitter laden gift bags, the flower streamers and the sunshine piñata? You, my friend, need to make a list! Post-its are some of my best friends; I know them well. While lists work well for everyday life, they are a huge part of being organized and pulling off a great party.

Some suggestions to get you started:

1 month beforeCreate your guest list, create a theme for your party, hire any entertainers or music services you will need

2 weeks beforeOrder your cake, balloons, etc and send out invites if you haven’t already done so. Plan your menu.

Buy any needed groceries, pick up

and/or bake the cake, create any

party favors or assemble gift bags.

Make sure the batteries in your

camera are charged and/or that you

have film. Wrap presents.

Buy ice, prepare food, pick up balloons…Enjoy!!!

Party FavorsBirthday Party Favors are all the rage these days. No matter the age of your child, all kids love taking something special home. Gifts and giftbags can be pricy so why not make your own? Better yet…have the kids design their own as part of the party!

Buy paper lunch bags, markers, paints, glue, glitter, fur, feathers, jewels…anything to make a Birthday Goodie Bag special.

Have each child write their name on a bag and decorate it using their favorites. Rhinestones, feathers and charms are great for girls. Paint, animal, video game and planet stickers are perfect for boys.

When the party is nearing it’s end, have each child grab there dried bag and come and grab a handful of goodies. (you can fill a big bowl with candy, small toys, charms, pencils, bracelets)…whatever you want!

The kids will leave having created their very own gift bags as well as a treasure to take home. A little time and creativity makes a special, inexpensive memory that goes home with each child.

Birthday parties are not just for kids anymore. Parents, why not treat yourself to a special day commemorating another year of your life! Throw yourself an adult-themed birthday party.

Be creative with your party. Sioux Falls has a variety of options available for adult-themed parties. Several restaurants in town offer an adult-only atmosphere with children under 21 not allowed. Check out consignment shops and used-clothing stores and have a costume or Oscar party! Try out other fun ideas like a Ladies Spa Day – take a turn at being a ‘Real Housewife’ for a day. Get provisions from your favorite beauty supply stores and turn your home into a spa or treat yourself and your friends to a day at your favorite salon or spa.

Enjoy your youth again! Celebrate your birthday by roller skating, swimming or spending a day at the zoo! Eat pizza, hot dogs or nachos! Chew bubble gum, eat candy and drink pop with a straw! Reliving your youth on your birthday is a fun way to include your family and to keep yourself young!

If you want to spend your day doing adult-only activities, why not enjoy one of the most popular adult-party themes, Casino night! With several casinos and bingo halls in Sioux Falls, you’ll have a choice to choose from. To get the most out of your party, do your research. Look for special events such as steak night! And with pull tabs, B3 Bingo machines and video lottery, you will feel like you are celebrating your birthday- VEGAS style!

Just like your child’s party, don’t forget to create a party plan. Invitations that match your theme are a must! Decorations, games and fun activities are also important to keep the party moving! Party food, beverages, snacks and cake can also be important to setting the party’s theme. And just like a child’s birthday, don’t forget the best part! Party favors!! Adults, as much as children, enjoy getting a thank you for coming to the party! Keep the favor simple, but something that goes along with your theme and your friends will enjoy celebrating your birthday every year! n

Dip the top of a lollipop stick into the Candy Melt about half an inch. Then insert into the center of a cake ball. The Candy Melt will help the sticks stay put. When all the cake balls are on sticks, dip the entire cake ball into the Candy Melt, tap off any extra melt liquid. Immediately decorate with candy sprinkles. June is National Dairy Month! Think refreshing milk, healthy yogurts, flavorful cheeses and yummy ice cream treats … what better way to celebrate than taking your family to the very place where all those amazing dairy products get their start?

For the fourth year in a row, the Ode family from Brandon, South Dakota, is celebrating Dairy Month by inviting the public to their dairy farm for an open house and free breakfast on Saturday, June 4. Join the Ode family at Royalwood Dairy from 8:30 a.m. to noon for breakfast and a farm tour to see how dairy farmers care for cows, protect the environment and produce a wholesome supply of milk for the dairy products we all enjoy.

Just a short ten-minute drive from Sioux Falls, the free, family-friendly event will include fun for all ages. Kids can participate in an activities area, learn about the importance of wholesome dairy products in a healthy diet, and even pet a baby calf. South Dakota children’s entertainer Phil Baker will be performing at 10 a.m. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and stay for his concert.

“Breakfast on the Farm has become a great family tradition for us. We enjoy opening our farm to the public and sharing our story,” said Gregg Ode. “It is a fun way for families to see animals and learn how the milk they buy at a grocery store makes it to their tables.”

Visit the South Dakota Farm Families page on Facebook or www.agunited.org for more information and directions. n

anymore, it could really get rough.

She was turning eleven, but you’d

have thought sixteen. How excited

I was to possess my own ‘tween’.

What could we do to keep them all busy?

Let’s spin them around and make them all dizzy!

Her little sister laughed as she shared her thoughts,

If she had HER way, she’d tie them with knots.

Instead we got pizza, pop and some donuts;

The sugar we gave would make them all go nuts.

They did their hair and they painted their nails.

They enacted a salon and all it entails.

A movie was chosen but that took some time.

A movie for me meant it would soon be bedtime.

They laughed, they squealed, they played truth or dare.

I could not wait to remove these kids from my hair.

The night was soon over; it went by really fast.

The girls all left smiling after having a blast.
