Honoring Heroes

On September 11, 2001, we experi-enced a catastrophic nightmare, our worst nightmare. It started out as a day where we saw our loved ones off, kissing them goodbye, and expecting to see them back at home that evening. Instead, on that September morning, we stopped—the World stopped. On September 11, 2001, we experienced the most devastating terrorist attack in U.S. history. Loved ones, family members, friends, co-workers, and people we didn’t know, never returned home. And those lost that day are still lost, dearly missed, and al-ways remembered. In the attacks, four flights full of fuel took off from the east coast bound for Cali-fornia. Over 3,000 people were killed in the attacks; six people survived the collapse of the Twin Towers; and over 10,000 people were treated for severe injuries. 2,753 people were killed when Ameri-can Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the north and south World Trade Center Towers. It was the deadliest day for New York City Firefighters: 343 New York Firefighters and Paramedics died risking their lives to save those trapped high in the towers. 23 New York City Police Officers, 37 Port Au-

thority Officers and three Search and Res-cue dogs died all while saving lives and while trying to save each oth-er. At the Pentagon in

Washington, 184 people/service members were killed when American Air-lines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon build-ing, and in Penn-sylvania, 40 pas-sengers and crew died aboard United Air-lines Flight 93 when the plane crashed into a field after heading for an unknown target. First Hospital in the Region to Offer

With the purchase of the second state-of-the-art da Vinci robotic surgical system, PVHMC is the first Hospital in the Inland Empire (IE) to offer robotic surgery in both an inpatient and outpatient setting. Certain robotic surgeries that used to be done in the main Hospital operating room are now performed in the Robert and Beverly Lewis Outpatient Pavilion on the sec-ond floor. “We’re the first Hospital in the IE to offer robotic pro-cedures on an outpatient basis, including gallbladder sur-gery, hernia repair, hysterectomy and other gynecologic surgeries,” said PVHMC Director of Surgical Services Martha Soto, MSN, RN, CNOR. “The Outpatient Pavilion offers a comfortable, convenient and more relaxing expe-rience for patients, in a space filled with natural light and soothing colors.” The Hospital’s first da Vinci robotic surgical system was moved to the Outpatient Pavilion and its newest ro-botic system has been installed in the main Hospital op-erating room for larger, more complex cases. Colon re-sections, bariatric surgeries, urology surgeries, lung sur-geries and other thoracic procedures can now be done with this minimally invasive robotic technology.

“The new high-definition 3D equipment is the most advanced robotic technology currently availa-ble,” Martha said. “It allows surgeons deeper access into the abdomen and chest, where they can operate with better precision through just a few small incisions.” The new robotic system also provides better maneu-verability for the physician and surgical team, shortening procedure times and minimizing the length of time a pa-tient is under anesthesia. “Robotic surgery reduces the patient’s time in the Hospital, as well as their recovery time, and minimizes many of the costs and complications of open proce-dures,” Martha said. “We’re thrilled to offer it on both an inpatient and outpatient basis.”

On Wednesday July 25, 2018, The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Commission on Accredi-tation (COA) awarded Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center’s New Graduate Residency Nursing Program, Accreditation with Distinction, the highest recognition awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Accreditation Program. PVHMC is one of five hospitals in California and forty three in the nation to have accredit-ed Transition to Practice programs. This accomplish-ment is part of the Nursing Strategic Plan and our Transi-tion Program is part of Structural Empowerment in the Nursing Magnet Model. The rigorous accreditation process required demon-strating evidence, structure, and processes within six (6) domains.

Program leadership

Organization enculturation

Development & design (competencies)

Practice based learning

Nursing professional development

Quality outcomes

The Residen-cy is designed to prepare the new-ly licensed regis-tered nurse to use effective decision-making skills, provide clinical leader-ship at the point of care, incorpo-rate research into practice and strengthen professional commitment to nursing. We were also acknowledged for our Preceptor/Mentor Program Model as a “Best Practice.” The model is dependent on a well-developed preceptor/mentor nurse relationship with monthly professional Seminars for the first year of transition. The Journey of excellence is evident, a true Magnet Moment!

DIG #106 Let’s commit to treating our

Hospital as if it were our home! Show

PVHMC some TLC! Chair, Shaun Gould, Leigh Cornell, Jay Owens, Cheyenne Smith, Paula McKay, Jessika Carrasca, Danny Gonzalez, Frank Garcia

What is the purpose of this DIG?

We discovered that most of the maintenance that takes place around the Hospital is painting of interior and exterior walls, mainly caused by Associates lean-ing against a wall with a foot up or bumping equip-ment against the walls.

It is everyone’s responsibility to report issues to Facil-ities or EVS. If you see something that needs fixing or touching up, please say something.

To help you to know the difference between when to call Facilities and when to call EVS.

We want YOU to feel empowered to care for our Hospital. If a colleague has a foot up on the wall, we ask that you kindly let them know.

Why do we need to implement this DIG?

A large portion of expenses accrued by Facilities is repainting walls or fixing corners of wall damaged by our own Associates. This takes away important time

and funds that could be used to improve other areas of the Hospital, such as refurbishing patient rooms.

A dirty Hospital gives the impression of dirty work, especially in the healthcare field – it is detrimental to our image of service and care.

Customer Satisfaction scores are lower when a pa-tient comes to our Hospital and sees a facility that looks like no one cares on how we feel about our second home.

How can we come together to show our Hospital the love it deserves?

As part of our communication plan to all Associates (Employees, Physicians and Volunteers), we will be sharing with you tips and information on how to re-port an area that needs maintenance, how to com-municate with fellow Associates, and other ways you can do your part to make PVHMC look and feel like our own homes.

September is Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Aware-ness Month! PAD is a chronic circulatory condition, which if left untreated can result in unnecessary limb am-putations. PAD affects approximately 18 million US citi-zens, and 160,000 to 180,000 of those patients are esti-

mated to undergo limb ampu-tation this year. PAD is a condition in which plaque build-up reduc-es the blood flow to your ex-tremities. If you have PAD, you may particularly experi-ence discomfort or pain in your legs when you walk, a

symptom called claudication. Leg pain typically begins when you start to exercise and goes away after you rest. Risk factors for PAD, as identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), include smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and age over 60. PAD patients are also at greater risk for heart attack and stroke. Research has shown Supervised Exercise Therapy (SET) to be an effective, noninvasive method to alleviate the most common symptoms associated with PAD. Stud-ies have found patients participating in SET were able to improve their walking ability more than those completing a non-supervised program, such as home-based exer-cise, or just following walking advice. SET programs, long been supported by the American Heart Association as a first-line, noninvasive, low risk

therapy for PAD—are now covered by Medicare.

PVHMC Now Offers “PAD Rehab” — Supervised Ex-

ercise Therapy for Peripheral Artery Disease

PAD Rehab is a new program provided by Cardiovas-cular Rehabilitation. Located in Rehab Services, the pro-gram includes:

Supervised Exercise Therapy (SET) with guided in-struction

Exercise plan, alternating activity and rest intervals

Treadmill walking

Resistance training

Risk factor education

Up to 36 sessions

3-5 days per week for 12 weeks

The benefits of PAD Rehab include the following:

Reduced PAD symptoms and leg pain

Increased ability to walk for longer stretches before needing to rest

Improved muscle strength

Reduced risk of heart attack or stroke

Weight loss

For more information about “PAD Rehab” please call our cardiovascular rehabilitation specialists at 909.865 9131.

What is Shared Governance? Shared Governance (SG) is a structure that exists to provide nurses the opportunity to work in collaboration with management to share decision-making and account-ability for improving the quality of care provided to our patients. It is about discovering the power of nursing, to-gether we make a difference! SG is described in the structural empowerment component of the Magnet® model. Our aim during the fair was to help increase aware-ness about not only what shared governance is but what each council/committee is responsible for. The fair also gave an opportunity for the chairs of Shared Governance both at the house wide and specialty based level to speak about the goals for the year, members, terms of membership, accomplishments and why they decided to self-nominate to become SG representatives. We also unveiled our newly designed Shared Governance model to all Associates. Many thanks to all of you that were able to attend, present, answer questions and ask questions! I hope that we met your needs.

Speaking of Shared governance, the Professional Research Council (PRC) chaired by emergency depart-ment nurse, Jorge Strembert, MSN, RN, MICN, encour-ages our clinical nurses to present their evidence based practice (EBP) projects, research subjects and process improvements to the PRC. One of the goals of the PRC is to provide input, give suggestions and guide nurses through the process of EBP and research through our newly adopted, Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice model. The PRC is a resource for anyone in-volved in Capstone projects, Clinical level III and IV pro-

jects. Mark Santos, RN of Te-lemetry 3 Station 2 & 3, Rob-erta Hernandez, BSN, RN of Pediatrics and Bonnie Bu-chanan, RN of the Emergen-cy Department are a few ex-amples of nurses taking ad-vantage of this resource. Great work nurses! This is

the future of nursing research! Lastly, These are examples of new knowledge, innova-tions and improvements (NK), a component of the Magnet® model that refer-ences the work of nurses through research.

Submitted by Rufus Roney, CICU—The happiest man in the world!

I bid you greetings on this most beautiful day! Why do you think we are the greatest Hospital in the world? You haven't heard? We have the greatest Associates in the world! I will prove it to you, but first I’ve got to tell you that I love each of you, and I love everything about my PVHMC family. You are all winners! Unfortunately, we experienced the loss of two of our very own last month, Erika Alvarado from the Lab and Reece Snapp from Maintenance . Words can never fully express how valuable Reece and Erika were to us. Kahil Gibran said, “Love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation. I would like to share my personal friend-ship with these two. Reece was not only a friend and brother that we all loved, Reece was a prince. I always saw him awesomely paining areas in our Hospital, and we would often talk of the U.S. Navy. He told me how much he loved aircraft carriers, and he would always say, “So you drove the big boat—what was it like?” (lol) We both laughed. I told him driving Americas super carriers was like driving a Cadil-lac. I was humbled to be trusted to be at the helm. I had to help paint the ship too, but not as good as Reece. His work speaks for itself and he knew that cleanli-ness boosted morale for everyone. When I come through the Hospital doors and look in every direction at our walls and doors, I will always remember that Reece was here! When God looks at your smiling face in heaven, I’m sure he will have some good words for you. You took the tal-ent God blessed you with and multiplied it a thousand fold. Reece paining the Hospital with joy—like Michelan-gelo painted pictures, like Beethoven composed music and Shakespeare wrote poetry. Thank you Reece for your service, job well done! Erika was our sister, friend and our inspiration. She was not just an Associate, she was our princess, a won-derful wife, mother, and sister to us all. Erika set the pace; she finished her course and won the race! She in-spired all of us tremendously. She was a part of the mag-nificent lab team that is second to none. Reputation is always changing. We can shape it with our hands, and it can come and go at will. But character is for eternity. Eri-ka's character will live forever in our hearts. I remember being in my home unit CICU (CVICU) one day and I had the privilege to open the door for her smil-ing face. Erika loved our Hospital so much! “Thank you, Rufus!” she lovingly said as she gave me a hug. I told her that so many of us were praying for her as she was com-ing to work in spite of her condition. She was still stand-ing as strong as ever and she looked great! It just defies explanation as she was our bright light of hope. She smiled and shared with me that people often had asked her why you? Why must you go through this? It didn't seem fair. She then shared her favorite verse with me

that is from the book of Proverbs, Chapter 3, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understand-ing; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.” She knew one day she would be in heaven laughing and rejoicing. So in spite of what I can understand, I must take God seriously and trust him! It may not be given to me to un-derstand why but I can trust him to make everything beautiful in his time. Erika uplifted me as I wiped my tears! We both smiled and she said, “The Lord gave her strength to keep going, and she did it for her family! I had to fight back the tears again. She was the teacher and I was the student. On the days she felt weak, many of us gave to her cause as we wanted Erika around us always and to keep on going, yet God had a plan. Matthew 25:35-40 “For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me some-thing to drink; I was a stranger and you invited me in; I need clothes and you clothed me; I was sick and you looked after Me; I was in prison and you came to visit Me. Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord when did we see you hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink? When did we see You as a stranger and invite You in, or needing clothes and clothed You? When did we see You sick or in prison go visit You?’ The King will reply, truly ‘I tell you, whatever you did for the least of these My brothers and sisters of Mine you did it for Me.’” There it is – when we do for others we are putting it right into the Lords hand. It’s like going to the bank to deposit into your account. Do you want to give something to God? Just give to others and you are paying Him di-rectly. God blesses us in ways you have yet to think about. He will give you favor in ways you cannot imagine when we give to others. Why? Because this is the way of Love! For God is love! What I like about it is that He never forgets any deed of love but turns around and blesses us, our families and our Hospital. Just recently our beloved President/CEO, Rich Yochum and the Board of Directors blessed many of us with a wonderful raise! Let’s keep him, our leaders and their families in prayer always. The blessings will keep on coming – keep on flowing. I love you PVHMC and I know Ericka loved her PVHMC family too. Have a wonderful month of Septem-ber my dear family, and thanks for coming to work to-day.

The 16th annual Chino Relay for Life took place on August 4th at Ayala Park. The 24 hour relay raises mon-ey for the American Cancer Society and cancer re-search. The PVHMC Sparks of Hope team participated in the relay and the Hospital supported the event through their sponsorship. There were a total of 40 team mem-bers who consisted of Associates, cancer survivors, and friends/family of survivors. The Sparks of Hope team raised over $2,000 for cancer research! A special thank you to all who participated, donated,

and came to the event to support Sparks of Hope and cancer research. It was great to see many of our patients, cowork-ers and families at the relay. The hot weather was a challenge but the tribute to the survivors and supporters was well worth the day. Very inspirational and em-powering!

Telemetry 3 Stations 2 & 3 By Maria Brown, MSN, RN, Magnet Coordinator

Bedside shift report (BSR) is an evidence-based prac-tice that incorporates the patient in the communication exchange during hand-off. It begins with the outgoing nurse introducing the oncoming nurse to the patient. The introduction is then followed by a quick assessment of the patient and the environment. Typically that involves an overview of the patient, room, IV fluids, IV sites, dressings and safety issues. The clinical staff of Telemetry 3, along with the guid-ance of Gerly Leyco, MSN, RN, CCRN, Clinical Supervi-sor, brain-stormed to decide what this process would look like on their unit. Clinical level III nurses and Charge Nurses became the group that championed the process. The staff embraced the change by creating a video to demonstrate BSR with the use of AIDET and a Power-Point for education. They quickly realized that this would not be an easy task but understood the value this would bring to the patients and their families. Changing the location of shift change report from the nurses’ station to the bedside has been identified as a means of increasing patient safety, patient satisfaction and nurse satisfaction. Good job Telemetry 3 Stations 2 & 3 on revitalizing BSR on your unit! A special thanks to Lana Mach, BSN, RN; Cheryl Macaraig, BSN, RN; Gloria Bautista, BSN, RN; Victoria Broberg, BSN,RN, PHN and Patricia Fisher, RN.

The clock on the wall shows that the time is 0708.

Where are the nurses of Telemetry 3 Station 2?

You’ll find them at the

bedside exchanging

a bedside shift

report (BSR).

By Elizabeth Grainger, Palliative Care Chaplain

Who among us has not been hurt by an unkind word, a thoughtless action, or even a greater wrong? And what’s more, which of us has not—intentionally or unin-tentionally—wronged another person, whether a stranger, friend, colleague, or loved one? The resulting wounds can, over time, create misunderstanding, anger, bitterness, and pain. By calling on compassion and for-giveness, we can soothe and ultimately seek to heal our wounds. We can create opportunities for healing, and affect our own emotional, spiritual, and physical well-being. Forgiveness may mean different things to different people. Generally, forgiveness involves relieving our-selves of personal resentment and any resulting plans for revenge or vengeance. Many faith traditions have rituals and practices of forgiveness, from daily prayers invoking forgiveness of self and other, to communal annual holi-days. Within the Christian tradition, one of the most famil-iar prayers of all is the Lord’s Prayer in which millions of people every day call on God to “forgive us our trespass-es [wrongs] as we forgive those who trespass [do wrong] against us.” In asking for forgiveness for ourselves, we may in turn also be able to let go of feelings of anger, resentment, and bitterness against others. These very simple words acknowledge a basic truth many of us ex-perience every day—we may not be able to change the past or anyone else’s behavior, but we can always seek to change our own actions, and call on a vast store of love and compassion. This month, both the Jain and Jewish traditions pro-vide powerful examples of rituals of forgiveness. Paryushana Parva (Festival of Forgiveness, September 7-14) is the most important Jain festival of the year. Jains practice ahimsa, or non-violence, as their fundamental core belief. For Jains, this is a time of intensive study, reflection and purification. Paryushan, meaning “abiding” or “coming together” provides Jains with an opportunity to look within and review their conduct and behaviors, and to address any perceived wrong-doings through seeking forgiveness, as well as through meditation, contemplation, and prayer. The festival concludes with a final day of confession (or Pratikramana, meaning “introspection”) during which the faithful seek forgiveness initially from their spir-itual teacher, then from family and friends, and ulti-mately from all living beings—along with granting forgiveness to all. This ritual is also known as the “Rite of Universal Friendship,” in which all living be-ings may find connection. The Jewish High Holidays begin at sundown on Sep-tember 9 with Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year), and continue into Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) beginning at sundown September 18. It is said that the Gates of Heaven open on Rosh Hashanah and close at the end of

Yom Kippur, and this time is a period of introspection, prayer, asking for for-giveness. Many use this op-portunity to apologize to oth-ers for specific wrongdoings. If the person has passed away, some people still take the time to write a letter of apology. In these ways, a person is able to open his or her heart and seek forgiveness for any wrongdoing that may have occurred over the previous year (or before), and on the Day of Atonement itself, to find a sense of peace and renewal in the year to come. As the days shorten and the Summer turns to Autumn (Equinox, September 22), if you find yourself thinking of forgiveness, may these ideas inspire you in your own journey of peace and healing. Remember that the Chap-lains of Spiritual Care Services are here for support, in-spiration, and listening. Our interfaith service is designed to provide spiritual care, while respecting and supporting the needs of our religiously and spiritually diverse com-munity. Please call 909.469.9305, or page the Chaplain on call at x5904 (available Monday-Friday, 9:00 am-5:30 pm). By Jennifer Bell, Workers’ Compensation Manager, Occupational Health Services

What is Workers’ Compensation?

Workers’ Compensation is a no-fault insurance, paid for by your employer and supervised by the State of Califor-nia.

What is a work-related injury or illness?

A work-related injury or illness is one that arises out of, or during the course and scope of your employment. You may be entitled to medical, temporary disability, permanent disability, supple-mental job displacement or death bene-fits. AdminSure, Inc. is our Third Party Administrator (TPA).

What do I do if I’m injured?

Immediately notify your Manager, Oc-cupational Health or Nurse Staffing Su-pervisor.

Complete the Occupational Injury / Ill-ness Report and report to OHS the day of the injury.

If you have a pre-designated doctor form on file, contact the Workers’ Comp Manager at 909.469.9342 before going directly to your doctor for treatment.

If injured, do I have to file a claim?

By law, when you report a work-related injury, OHS must provide you with a workers’ compensation claim form. However, the law does not require that you file a claim. If you do not wish to file a claim, you must sign the Injury/Illness Report, declining treatment.

If you DO NOT seek medical attention: Workers’ Compensation forms should still be completed and filed

with OHS to protect your rights under the law. You have one year, thereafter, to formally file a claim.

If you DO seek medical attention: Please report to OHS immediately after your appointment for further in-structions.

Can I go to my own doctor?

If you wish to go to your personal physician for treatment, you must complete a Designation of Personal Physician form prior to the injury and your personal physician must agree to treat your work-related injury. The Workers’ Compensation Department keeps record of all employ-ees who have pre-designated a physi-cian. You can obtain a pre-designation form from the Workers’ Compensation Department at any time.

What if I need to visit the doctor dur-ing work hours?

Associates are encouraged to make all appointments, i.e., physician, P.T., or diagnostic studies, before or after work. If you are unable to do so, please make arrangements with your manager. Workers’ Com-pensation does not provide benefits for appointment at-tendance during work hours.
