Introduction

AC Traction - Distribution is one of the most important aspects of Electrified Railways that ensures a safe,

modern and cost effective Railway technology to cater the growing demand of passenger and freight

traffic on Indian Railways with excellence. The main vision behind the creation of this department is to

minimize the outgoing of foreign exchange for purchase of Diesel over Indian Railways.

The main goal of TRD department is to achieve constant & uninterrupted 25 KV AC power

supply through OHE for safe passage of trains through the stations. This is also a system

which eliminates the human failures while dealing trains. The design of different types Traction

installation used is such that to ensure a fail safe operation.

Different electrical equipments like- Transformers, Circuit Breakers, CT, PT, BM, OHE Masts, Conductors,

Insulators, Bonds etc. are integrated in such a manner to ensure safety & reliability of the system

through continual improvements in maintenance.

History

The TRD organization is the heart of Electrical department. This organization was formed in the year

2001-02 in South Eastern Railway, Ranchi division. The Complete tracks of Ranchi division (Except

Ranchi- Lorhardaga section) were electrified with 25 KV AC traction in the year 2001-02. Ranchi-

Lohardaga-Tori section (120KM)has been electrified in the year 2018-19.The electrified Route Kilometer

and Track Kilometer of Ranchi division is 485.31 RKM and 785.68 TKM respectively. Total staffs on roll

are 216, Men/TKM = 0.27.

Infrastructure

Traction Sub-Stations & Switching Posts

The power supply to the entire section over Ranchi Division, is presently fed by Six Traction Sub-Stations

(TSS) out of which four TSSs namely Lohardaga, Tatisilwai, Lodhma, Bakaspur, and Bano are receiving

power supply from JSEB and rest one TSSs namely Muri is receiving power supply from DVC. In order

to bifurcate the OHE into sector and sub-sector for proper isolation for maintenance or during

emergencies 33 nos. switching stations have been provided out of which 12 are SP and rest 21 are SSP.

Maintenance Depots

There are total Ten Maintenance depots to maintain the Tr-D assets, out of which Six depots are carrying

out maintenance of OHE assets and rest four depot maintains PSI assets. This organization setup

facilitates the efficient management of resources.

Break-down vehicles

The deployment of Nine Tower Wagons and four hired Trucks to various depots are done on the basis

of quantum of work and geographical configuration of their jurisdiction. Special care has been taken while

deploying eight wheeler Tower Wagon at Hatia, Muri,Lohardaga and Bano keeping in view the

maintenance of all section and its efficient utilization/assistance to other depots as and when required.

Remote control of Power Supply Installations through SCADA system

One Traction Power Control Board is now functioning in the divisional office at HTE for monitoring &

controlling the OHE power supply over division. PC based Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition

system has been commissioned for operation and monitoring of power supply equipment ’s. All the

traction SP and SSP in Ranchi division are unmanned and are being monitored through PC based

SCADA system.

The Remote Control Unit is monitoring the system for the trouble free functioning of the SCADA systems.

Innovation & Initiatives taken towards system improvement

Apart from the regular maintenance work, the division has taken up various innovative works for implementation of advance technologies like :

Energy conservation

Capacitor banks have been installed at all traction sub-station of RNC -division a move towards energy

conservation.

Introduction of Advance Technology

Thermography of Traction installations as a preventive measure to detect the hot spots in Tr-D

installations thermography checking by Thermal Vision Camera is being done, hence any

defects/discrepancies can be attended well before the unusual occurrences.

GPS based OLIVER-G Current collection system

In order to monitor the smooth negotiation of pantograph on contact wire and occurrences of heavy

flashes during passage of pantographs, the GPS based OLIVER-G Current collection system is being

used as a preventive measure.

The OLIVER Make RT Software supplied with the unit identifies sparks in real time and save them as

images with locations as well as in video format. These images can be analyzed to recognize the type of

spark with its location.

Page 10: HOME [ser.indianrailways.gov.in]

Tan delta (Tan δ) testing

Tan delta test kit is being used for checking leakage current of bushings of power transformer, Current

Transformer and Potential transformer.

Leakage current monitoring of Lightening Arrestor

Leakage current checking are being done to diagnosis the healthiness of lightening arrestors.

Logistic solution for overhead bunker loading in Electrified section

A special arrangement has been made at Rajrappa Washery siding by Providing 25 KV Traction

underneath the chute of loading Bunker to facilitate passing of Electric Loco in Power On condition,

loading can thus be done in EOT position.

Stagger checking and video recording of section with the help of GPS based OLIVER-G

In this system, stagger checking is being done with the help of GPS based OLIVER-G. The actual stagger

and accurate location of traction masts are displayed on Laptop and also continuous video recording of

stagger of entire section is done. By this system stagger checking is being done by one person only and

later is can also be analyzed in the Depot/office.

Page 11: HOME [ser.indianrailways.gov.in]

Model OHE at important OHE Depot

Model OHE has been erected at major OHE Depot for field training to artisan staff. Various mock drills are

being organized among staff for early Breakdown restoration.
