HOME LEARNING AT EMNETH ACADEMY WE ENCOURAGE CHILDREN TO COMPLETE HOME LEARNING TO SUPPORT THE TOPIC AND TO DEVELOP THEIR KEY SKILLS. TOWARDS THE END OF THE TOPIC, CHILDREN WILL BE ASKED TO BRING
THEIR HOME LEARNING IN TO SHOW THEIR TEACHER AND PEERS.
TOPIC BASED HOME LEARNING
• Create a fact file on WW1. Children can choose any way to present this information – be as imaginative as you like!
• You can focus on any of the following areas: o Women in the war o The trenches o Weaponry o Animals o Aircraft
Year 6 Expectations
In addition to topic based home learning, children will regularly bring home work which will prepare them for Year 6 SATs. This will include tasks in comprehension, arithmetic, reasoning, spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Year 6 children are also expected to read a wide variety and range of texts and continue to develop their love for books.
Year 6 children may be invited to attend after school booster session and/or Saturday school sessions. We urge parents to support these sessions by ensuring their child attends. It makes a significant difference to their progress and attainment.
Clevertouch monitor will be used to play short films of WW1 battles.
WW1 uniforms will be available in the classroom for children to try on.
Images of warfare will be displayed in the form of informative diagrams.

WHOLE SCHOOL EVENTS
Michael Morpurgo is an extremely famous children’s author. He is very popular with adults and children for his wide range of novels that address a variety of themes.
‘Private Peaceful’ was the winner of the Blue Peter Book award upon its release. It follows the story of a young Thomas Peaceful and his memories of the Frist World War in England. Each chapter counts down to a moment that will change Tommo’s life forever.
TOPIC BASED SUBJECTS
Animals including the human body, including the func-on of the heart, the role of circula-on in the body and what makes a heart rate speed up.
Recognising the impact of nutrients and diet and thinking about the effects of drugs on the body.
Chronological reports – Children will complete an assessed piece of writing at the start of the term. They will produce a newspaper report on the British army arriving in Tommo’s town.
Journal – Children will complete a series of journals from Charlie’s perspective.
Performance Poetry – Children will complete some War-style poetry, focusing on onomatopoeia.

NON- TOPIC BASED SUBJECTS
Right to free speech
Children will be taught how to correctly hold and put across an opinion of theirs, i.e. Manchester United are the best football team in the world.
Children will focus on the following topic themed philosophical questions this term:
Is war ever the right thing to do?
Should war be used as a last resort?
Dance – Develop, design, choreograph and perform a Christmas ‘Tango’ dance.
Through dance develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance.
A study of Chris.anity.

Unit 4 Generalising Arithmetic – Mental calculations involving division; dividing 4 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers; dividing decimals by whole numbers; solving word problems using all operations.
Unit 5 Exploring Shape - Name parts of circles; angles in polygons; angles at a point, on a straight line and vertically opposite. Compare and classify geometric shapes.
Unit 6 Reasoning with Measures - Area of parallelograms and triangles; appreciation of range of shapes with same area or perimeter; appreciation of formulae for area; volume of cuboids.
