Term 2 Week 4 Principal’s Message Striving for School Excellence Schools, by their very nature, are places of learning, change and innovation. It is important for every school to engage in an ongoing process of evaluation, regularly reviewing and reflecting on the needs of students and the broader needs of the school. Part of this process includes an evaluation of school assessment data and a review of school surveys. At the end of last term, students in years 4 to 6 completed the new Tell Them From Me survey, with the opportunity to share their experiences of Floraville Public School. This survey is coordinated by the Department of Education’s statistical unit, CESE – Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/ . At the end of last year, parents and carers were also invited to complete a school survey. At last week’s P&C meeting, I shared the survey results and noted a few implications for school planning. During 2016 I am keen to develop a clear picture of the needs of the school and work together with the community to establish a shared vision for the future. We have a great school here at Floraville, but we have a responsibility to our students to look for ways to continually refine and enhance our practice. The student survey results are available on the school website http://www.floraville-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/ . Students in KS striving for excellence

10 May P&C Meeting It was great to meet a number of parents at this month’s P&C meeting and find out a bit more about how the community is involved around the school. The P&C has input on a number of school property initiatives and supports a range of school programs. One pressing property matter which I am keen to address is the best use of the school sports field – The Flat. This is such an important area for school sport and fitness activities but it is not always available throughout the year because of weather conditions. This week I made a submission to the Department of Education’s Asset Management Unit for the installation of a synthetic sports surface to be installed. While I have been very impressed with the site and facilities at Floraville, The Flat is an area which could be enhanced for more efficient use - watch this space ABC Radio Our school leaders enjoyed a special opportunity last week, providing an audio recording of the names of Australian soldiers for a new initiative with the Australian War Memorial. The front office was converted into a recording studio as 1233 ABC Radio provided their facilities for the recording. Visitors to the War Memorial in Canberra will be able to hear children reciting the names on the World War I Roll of Honour as they walk along the cloisters in the commemorative area. Finally I hope you enjoy reading this week’s bumper-bulletin. Published in weeks 4 and 8 each term, the Bulletin provides greater detail about what is happening in and around the school. Simon Mulready Principal

This week’s virtue is DETERMINATION You focus your energy and efforts on a task and stick with it until it is finished. Determination is using your will power to do something when it isn’t easy. You are determined to meet your goals even when it is hard or you are being tested. With determination we make our dreams come true.

Did you know…

In 2017 the school will celebrate its 50 year anniversary. Have a think about how we might celebrate this special event.

NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS On Thursday 12th May, the Newcastle Knights visited Stage 2 students after they had completed their NAPLAN testing. It was a fantastic afternoon running, passing, kicking and playing with our friends!

WINDALE CUP It has been a great start to our weekly rugby league program for 2016. On Thursday 19th May our rugby league team will compete in the Newcastle Knight’s Knockout at Windale. We wish them all the very best! BOYS TOUCH FOOTBALL On Friday 20th May, Harley Roddom will be representing Floraville and the Eastlakes PSSA in their touch football team competing at Wallsend Touch Football Fields. We wish them all the very best! PRIMARY ATHLETIC CARNIVAL The carnival will again be run at Hunter Sports Centre (Stockland Dr, Glendale) on Tuesday 24th May, 2016. All students need to be at school by 9am to have their names marked off before leaving on the buses. All students should wear full sports uniform, NO SPIKES, no unnecessary jewellery. Please provide sunscreen, hat, 2 drink bottles, healthy snacks and lunch/money for the day. Thank you to the volunteers that returned their interest slips. Please come and see Mr Cox in the morning at the centre. PSSA BOYS CRICKET The weather was kind to us and we were sent into bat after losing the toss. We had two regulars out through injury and their replacements Corey Bowne and William Hooper stepped in and played well. We got off to a solid start with Jayden Grozdanovski and Callum Sharman steadying the innings. With 5 wickets up our sleeve we decided in the last two overs to start going for big hits and risky runs. We hit a few fours but were restricted to a total of 63 runs with Ashton Mellare high scoring on 22. Caves beach came out strongly and after a few early wickets they seemed to hold firm, having a higher run rate than ours, but their wickets started to fall. Blake Priest bowled well, Jacob Spruce took a good catch and was solid in the field, Josh Taylor bowled a player out after a decent innings as did Matthew Langholz. Darby Jones bowled a player out and the game hung finely in the balance, our captain Brock Ayliffe had been using his blistering pace to good affect taking a couple of wickets and sending the bails almost to the boundary on one occasion. With twenty balls remaining caves beach only required 12 runs for victory and had shown they were capable of hitting fours. Their last batsman was clean bowled by Brock and the game was ours, we now progress to round three where we will meet either Valentine or Charlestown South. Thanks to Nick Grozdanovski for helping keep score, Mrs White, Mr Cox and the office staff for all the last minute running around they did in my absence to ensure the game went ahead with no clashes. Congratulations must go to our students for the way they conducted themselves in the true Floraville spirit as well as Caves Beach who were worthy opponents. Congratulations also to Brock Ayliffe who has been selected to play in the Eastlakes PSSA representative team. Well done boys Mr Avis

SPORTING SCHOOLS Sporting Schools is an Australian Government initiative designed to help schools to increase children’s participation in sport, and to connect children with community sport. Last year we applied for funding through this initiative and were lucky enough to receive a grant which allowed us to purchase equipment and run a golf program, with the assistance of Janelle Smith from Charlestown Golf Club during Term 4, 2015 & Term 1, 2016 at no cost to students. In 2016, we expanded our sports and have received equipment to assist us to run a bowls program, equipment to run a tennis program with coaching by Laurence from Central Tennis during Term 2 rotational sports at no cost to students, soccer training balls for our Macquarie Cup soccer teams, payment for the use of Marks Oval for Friday sport. We’re also currently looking to purchase additional softball equipment.

MOTHER’S DAY As women, we are constantly coming together with other women…at work, in schools, at the supermarket, alongside swimming pools and football sidelines, in the grandstands at sports fields and the foyers of ballet studios. However, on Thursday 5th May we gathered as one large group of chatty, smiling mothers and grandmothers to celebrate Mothers Day 2016 with all the Kindergarten students. After an emotional beginning where children snuggled on their mother’s laps and some found their mum by softly caressing her face while blindfolded, we moved to a hive of activities in the Kindergarten rooms. Here, all our special guests were treated to a treasure trove of mummy delights. Nails were painted, hair was tied in a garland of coloured ribbons and brooches were designed. After a back massage, many of our guests went home with bejewelled glasses, bookmarks and tiaras. We hope that as the generations were woven together on that day our Floraville families felt something wonderful that should be cherished and that the sun shone a little brighter for you all.

LANDCARE The Landcare team have had a busy start to Term 2. We are excitedly anticipating the completion of the vegetable garden which is being constructed opposite Wupilliko Kauma. In teams we have researched types of vegetables and herbs to plant in the appropriate season. Thank you to the Landcare parliamentarians for attending each week. You’re making a big difference showing leadership within the school community. Keep it up. The team have also been vigilant in reminding students about our new recycling bins in the playground. Plastic containers, cardboard, paper can go in. Chip packets, food, fruit (you know where fruit should go) and foil should not be put in, please put them in the PURPLE bins.
