Dear Friends,

This year I am 40 years a priest. The actual date of the anniversary will be Monday 16th June.

But we are hoping to have a parish celebra$on on Friday 20th June with Mass in the evening

followed by eats and drinks. Please keep the date free. Where has 40 years gone!

As many of you know I a+ended court on Friday of last week with Pauline Hickey, Hani’s moth-

er, as the 5 men in the dock who had been found guilty of his murder were sentenced. They

each got a life sentence and will have to serve at least 26 years before they are even considered

for release. Pauline did not want to be interviewed but asked me to read her statement to the

Press. I reproduce part of it here.

Hani was my only child. I pine for him every day and I cannot come to terms with the fact

that I will never again see his warm, beauful smile or his awkward walk or hear his child-

ish voice and explosive laugh, the way he said “Mum” constantly and told me he loved me

every day, the mess he le" is his bedroom and his heavy hugs.

Hani was a gentle and loving giant and that’s what made him my Hani. Every day I expect

him to come through the front door with his beauful smile and say “Mum what is there

to eat?” I cannot face the truth of Hani’s death and I cannot get over the devastang image of my son lying dead in

the hospital. The thought of a future without my Hani leaves me broken hearted. I will never see him achieve a wor-

thy career, get married or have children. He would have made a loving husband and father.

Hani suffered from Post Traumac Stress and anxiety a*acks and it was only in the last eight weeks of his short life

that he started venturing out on his own and making friends. I was so proud of him for having the courage to do

this. It has however le" me feeling so much guilt for not being there to help him when he was butchered by that

gang as he tried to run home to me. If I would have been there I would have thrown myself over him to save him but

I couldn’t.

Contrary to an incorrect statement that was made to the press shortly a"er Hani’s murder I would like to say that

Hani was not involved with any gangs and had never been arrested or involved with the police in any way. The foot-

age of him immediately prior to his death shows him walking back home from the shop with his girlfriend and friend

to play X Box. It could have been anyone who was murdered that night; Hani was just in the wrong place at the

wrong me. He was stabbed over thirty mes in a busy London street in the early evening. His murder has brought

fear to the community of Pimlico and other parents are saying that if it could happen to Hani it could happen to

their children.

I would like to thank the local community in Pimlico including Father Pat, the Pimlico Academy and the community

in Ireland for all their help and support. Everyone has been so good. …

No mother should have to endure this pain. Please keep Pauline in your prayers. Watch your own children too. Know where

they are. What company they are keeping. And don’t be afraid to discipline them when they step out of line, if you really

love them.

Yours devotedly, Canon Pat Browne Parish Priest

God’s Option for the Poor and Vulnerable

God is a God of jus$ce and mercy. Throughout the Scriptures, we hear how God “hears

the cry of the oppressed” and “is not deaf to the orphan [and widow].” God has mercy

on the lowly. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are called to reflect God’s care and concern

for the poor and vulnerable in our world.

One of the seven themes of Catholic Social Teaching is the

Op$on for the Poor and Vulnerable. A basic moral test of

society is the care of the vulnerable. “The richer classes

have many ways of shielding themselves, and stand less in

need of help from the State; whereas the mass of the poor

have no resources of their own to fall back upon, and must

chiefly depend upon the assistance of the State,” with

“State” referring to both global governments and the

Church. (Rerum Novarum, #37)

There are different ways in which individuals may show care for the poor and vulnerable.

We each need to discern how God is calling us to serve the least ones in our society.

Some of us are called to advocacy, to work to influence public policy. Some are called to

direct service, mee$ng the basic needs of the poor. Other are called to raise awareness

about the issues the poor face in our society. We are all called to pray for the poor, the

leaders of government and the Church, and for one another so that the needs of the

poor are at the forefront of our minds and that we may follow the guidance of the Holy

Spirit in caring for the vulnerable. We are also called to con$nually examine our own

ways of living and the mo$va$ons of our ac$ons.

Whether we realize it or not, how we live has an impact on the poor and vulnerable in

the world. We need to be mindful of what we are purchasing and where it came from.

Where was it made? Who made it? How did it get to the store where I’m buying it? We

need to consider how our purchase and use of goods promotes the care of the poor or

not.

I have friends who have gone on mission trips to third world countries. They come home

with stories of desolate poverty, but also of hope and faith. Amazingly, it seems that the

poorest in our world are the most open to God’s presence and will in their lives. The

poor humbly pray for their daily bread, literally, and give thanks and praise to God for

allowing them to eat whenever they are able. They truly rely on God to meet their

needs. The poor oIen put the needs of others, especially children and the sick, before

their own needs. They are examples of generous, self-less living. They are examples of

Jesus in the world.
