Dear Friends,

I want to thank those parishioners and their friends who come on Thursday night s to host

15 homeless people who sleep in our hall each week. There are 3 teams. Those who

cook a hot dinner and serve it. Those who lay out beds for the night and sleep over, and

those who come in early and cook breakfast. It is a wonderful show of solidarity with less

well- off people in central London and is greatly appreciated by the men and women who

sleep here. So, thank you to those who make it happen.

The local Foodbank at Westminster Chapel in Buck-

ingham Palace Gate has again asked for our help.

They are now short of Pasta Sauce (+ns or jars),

Tinned Fish, UHT Milk 500ml + 1 litre and Sugar

500gms and 1 Kgs. Can you help? If so, please de-

liver these to the Priests House or put them in the

box at the back of the church when you come to

Mass.

The richest 85 people in the world – who could squeeze onto a double decker bus – are as

wealthy as the poorest half of the global popula+on. The super-rich have a combined worth of £1 trillion – the

same amount owned by the poorest 3.5 billion.

But we can help redress that wealth imbalance. By promo+ng Fairtrade, we will help workers and farmers earn a

decent living and secure a be;er life for themselves. Around the world, farmers count on selling their crops to earn

enough money to survive, to buy clothes, food, medicine, a roof over their heads and to send their children to

school.

Over 500 Catholic Parishes across the UK and 8 catholic dioceses across the UK are cer+fied with Fairtrade.

On Saturday March 1st

Holy Apostles is hos+ng a Diocesesan- wide drive, led by Bishop John Arnold, to make the

whole of London a fair trade city. Speakers will include Fairtrade Founda+on Director Michael Gidney, social en-

terprise pioneer, Sophi Tranchell, of Divine Chocolate, and Alexis Palacio, who has come from his Banana Producing

work in Colombia. Come and show your support for Holy Apostles being a Fair trade parish.

We will also be hos+ng a blind-tas+ng of tea and coffee, so YOU can give your opinion on which tastes be;er, and

which adds a whole new dimension to the idea of “tea and sympathy”. The Fairtrade mark appears on over 1,500

products in the UK. It guarantees that farmers get a be;er price for their goods, so that they can have security to-

day and invest in a be;er future. There is great leadership from Pope Francis. Speaking to the Diploma+c Corps at

the Va+can on January 13th

, he asked: “How much pain and despera+on are caused by self-centredness, which

gradually takes the form of envy, selfishness, compe++on and the thirst for power and money?”

And in his first Peace Sunday message this year he said: “The succession of economic crises should lead to a +mely

rethinking of our models of economic development and to a change in lifestyles,”

Now’s your chance. Come along on March 1st

to take the first steps.

I

HOPE by Marcellino D'Ambrosio, Ph.D.

Faith, hope, and love… St. Paul, in I Corinthians 13:13, writes that these three are the bo;om

line. They are called the theological virtues; the quali+es that make us most like God. We

hear plenty about faith and love. But when is the last +me you heard a rousing homily on

hope? Why is hope important? And what is it precisely?

To accomplish great things in life, you need a future goal that is big enough to keep you

mo+vated. The promise of a diploma makes college students stay up late wri+ng papers

when they’d rather be partying. The dream of Olympic glory gets the runner up early to put

in miles while others are comfortably snoozing.

In the spiritual life, you’ll never do great things for God unless you have your eye on the long

term goal – indescribable joy in his presence forever. The ecstasy of gazing upon Him whose

beauty eternally awes the hosts of heaven, the exhilara+ng company of friends, family, and

fascina+ng people from all ages – purified, glorified, finished masterpieces of divine love –

this is what “the day of Christ Jesus” (Phil 1:6) will usher in, for those who are ready. The

virtue of hope is the eager, energizing expecta+on of this glorious inheritance. And it’s also

the confidence that He who began the work of salva+on in us will bring it to comple+on (Phil

1:6).

Some think Catholics live in fearful insecurity, perpetually worrying that they may not make

the grade. These Chris+ans, on other hand, believe that once people accept Jesus as Lord and

Savior, they are saved, period. God is faithful, they reason, and never reneges on his

promises. Once saved, always saved. This is par+ally true. God’s promise is sure. He gives us

grace to accept Christ and salva+on. But his grace never comes in a way that short-circuits

our freedom. In other words, God is a respecKul lover. He never overpowers us and carries

us away against our will. The possibility always remains that we will walk away, as did the

Prodigal Son. Fortunately the Prodigal came to his senses and returned. But note that the

Father did not send out a posse. The wayward son returned of his own accord. The story

could have ended otherwise.

So is there a Catholics version of “blessed assurance”? Yes. We call it hope. We have

confidence that God will give us the grace to persevere, and even be;er, to grow stronger in

his love right up to the “day of Christ Jesus.” But hope is, according to St. Thomas Aquinas, a

virtue not principally of the mind that believes in God’s faithfulness, but of the will that longs

for heaven with a desire that propels it forward to ever greater spiritual growth. One

opposite of hope is despair, failure to believe that God’s mercies are never exhausted. But

hope has other opposites as well. Like sloth, or spiritual laziness. When faced with the

prospect of life forever with God, sloth yawns and says “BOR-ing.” Sound familiar? Or how

about presumpon? Hope is humble confidence that God won’t give up on me. Presump+on

is the arrogant expecta+on that God owes me mercy, regardless how neglecKul I am of the

means of grace, like Mass, prayer, and Confession.

Hope is a spiritual muscle. But like all muscles, it must be exercised just to survive. Unused

muscles atrophy. Use it or lose it… Dr. Marcellino D’Ambrosio writes from Texas. For his resources on parenng and family life etc.,
