Being & Making Disciples!

THE GREAT THIRST QUENCHER!

I, like you have been struggling my way through these sizzling dog-hot triple-digit days of summer that can drain, dehydrate, burn, sun stroke, heat exhaust and leave even the most vibrant among us totally depleted—and it’s just barely August! How I long for the temperatures of Colorado where Tammy and I spent a week waking up to 55 de-gree mornings and experiencing 80 degree afternoon highs! An hour in the blistering Texas heat presses us to hunt shade, seek the AC, and search the frig for an ice cold beverage of choice that will quench the thirst.

It causes me to remember days of old when my dad would cut the lawn and need a break. His favorite drink to beat the heat, believe it or not, during the summer months was what he called a “Bohemian Cocktail” which is a fifty/fifty mixture of Big Red Soda and beer! Some say that is a total waste of good soda water while others say it’s a waste of good beer. Being one whose parched throat has been revived from such a beverage, I say, “Don’t knock it till you try it!”

And though I have not downed a Bohemian Cocktail in a number of years as my sum-mer thirst satisfier has turned more to “Earth Juice” (H2O), there are times when I will reach instead for a favored soft drink, of which an ice cold 35 degree Dr. Pepper or Pepsi will appease my longing for a liquid. However a recent “sale” on Coke-a-Cola and their advertising campaign has gotten my taste’s attention!

While on a quick mission to a local convenience store I discovered that Coke can now be found with names printed on the label—my name! Yes, personalized labels of nearly any and all names on the planet, and even if you have an unusual name, a label just for you can be printed at a special website! Come to find out, this marketing approach has been in place since 2013! So either I’ve totally been living in the dark on this one, or this is what happens when Coke is not a person’s number one soft drink!

What has my current interest in what Coke is doing is connected to what God has done and continues to do for us— He makes Himself personal to each one of us as The Great Thirst Quencher! John 4 tells a story of a woman who in the heat of the day comes to draw water at a well where Jesus is. He tells her that she can have living water, and those who drink of the water that He gives will never be thirsty. She says, “Sir, give me this water that I may never

be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.” She ends up drinking from the well of the Savior.

This drink which Jesus makes very personal for us is the only sip of hope that can satisfy the thirsty soul. It is not found in a soda water, adult beverage, earth juice, or even a Bohemian Cocktail, but is only found in the One who has placed our name on the label of His love for us through the cross and resurrection. May these dog days of summer remind us that our life finds its greatest meaning in the One who is the Spring of Water gushing up to eternal life. May we drink not only a lot from Him, but often! Amen? Amen!

Creation Care

For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as

far as the East is from the West, so far he removes our transgressions from us. As a father has compas-

sion for his children, so the LORD has compassion for those who fear him. For he knows how we were

made; he remembers that we are dust. Psalm 103: 11, 12, 13, 14 NRSV

Heating and Air Conditioning

Heating and air conditioning use the greatest amount of your home energy expenses. Keep your units operating efficiently.

• Heat pumps and air conditioning systems should be checked annually to confirm that they are moving the correct amount of air and are properly charged, strictly following the manufacturer’s guidelines.

• The inside and the outside coils should be kept clean and free of debris. • The return air filters should be changed monthly.

Have an HVAC technician check for and seal any duct leaks.

Insulation

Different types of insulation require different installation procedures, following the manufacturer’s recommenda-tions. • The ceiling insulation is the most important for overall efficiency. If you have insulation that is rated with an

R-19 or less in your attic you should consider increasing it to an R-38 in moderate climates and R-49 in cold climates.

• Blown-in wet cellulose or high-density foam insulation can stop air infiltration better than fiberglass. • Proper installation of insulation should prevent moisture in your walls. • During construction, seal all openings, plates and walls with foam or caulk. • Insulate and seal ducts in attics, crawl spaces, garages and other unheated spaces.

This information is taken from the June, 2016 issue of the Texas Coop Power Magazine.

WORSHIP IN AUGUST

Saturday, 6:00pm offers an Informal Service; Sunday, 8:00am is a Traditional Service; and Sunday, 10:30am is a Varied Format.

“Come, let us worship the Lord!”

The Sermon Series: The Summer Sermon Ser ies is titled, “Leaders Come in All Sizes, Shapes & Col-ors” as the focus builds up to the Global Leadership Summit by centering our attention on Bible leaders who may be lesser known but no doubt had great impact for the Kingdom!

Sat. & Sun., August 6 & 7: The Biblical character is Caleb, one of the 12 sent to spy out the promised land. The focus is on the leadership gift of having the courage to stand firm in the midst of great opposition. Numbers 13 shares the story of Caleb’s courage.

Sat. & Sun., August 13 & 14: Grandmother Lois is the Bible character who leads in passing on the faith to the next generation in 2 Timothy 1:5. Who are you passing the faith onto in an intentional way? Holy Com-munion is served for strength, hope, light, and forgiveness of sins!

Sat. & Sun., August 20 & 21: The New Testament leader for the weekend is Apollos. Apollos shows us the quality of humility, the willingness to receive constructive criticism, and a leader open to input from others. You can read his story in Acts 18:24-28.

Sat. & Sun., August 27 & 28: Stephen in Acts 6 is our leader as he shows us the grace of forgiveness even to those who are killing him. Only by the power of God can we do what we as humans many times will not or cannot! Communion is given for our forgiveness that we might extend that same grace to those who have hurt us.

Sat. & Sun., September 3 & 4: On Labor Day weekend, the sermon series on leaders comes to a close by looking at Job. Job was a man who labored with God through intense suffering, physical, emotional, and spiritual. He teaches us how to maintain faith through suffering. Read Job chapters 1 & 2.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month

Are you up to date on your vaccines?

Protect your health by getting all your shots on schedule. If you are age 60 or older: Get a shot to prevent shingles. Shingles causes a rash and can lead to pain

that lasts for months. You should get the vaccine even if you have had shingles before.

If you are age 65 or older: Get shots to prevent pneumococcal disease (which can include pneumonia,

meningitis, and blood infections) It’s also important for all adults to get: the seasonal flu vaccine -- it is the best way to protect yourself and others

from the flu. A tetanus shot every 10 years to keep you protected against tetanus and diphtheria.

Wishing you well, the Health Care Team of HGLC

Local Missions Team

James 2:14-17 - What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith

save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in

peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by

itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

Thanks to all who helped with our first highway cleanup! On Saturday, July 16th, members of the Church Coun-cil, the Couples Sunday School Class, the Local Missions Team, and some additional volunteers (17 in all) cleaned up our section of the highway on 87, wearing our new purple shirts, state assigned safety vests, and carry-ing our special paper picker uppers designed by our friend Willie Pfeiffer. This was the first and hardest of our cleanups, as TXDOT did not assign this section of the highway for some time. We estimate we delivered some 30-40 bags of a large variety of trash.

The next trash pickup will be in September and another one in December. Discuss with your team or family to participate in keeping Hwy 87 clean. Our new signs on either side of the highway look great! We need at least twenty people on each date to reduce the time commitment. Call Jerry Christensen if interested (309) 992-8121.

Remember to keep in mind the Christmas dinner for the community and look for opportunities to sign up in Sep-tember/October.
