All of our members will be happy to assist you. Restrooms are located through the double doors east of the main foyer. Phones are located in either the pastor’s or the secretary’s office. We encourage family worship at Holy Scripture, so we hope you will bring your little ones into church with you. Quiet bags for preschool age children are available in the foyer. If they become restless or noisy, a cry room is available off of the foyer, or you may prefer to quiet them in the church fellowship hall where closed circuit video of the service is available.

uring this service, we will celebrate the Lord’s Supper. Since this sacrament is the Lord’s Supper and not ours, we are

careful to follow our Lord’s instructions. In particular, we take to heart these important truths. 1. In the Lord’s Supper, Jesus truly gives us his

body and blood together with the bread and the wine. Jesus says, “Take and eat; this is my body... Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood” (Matthew 26:26-28).

2. In the Lord’s Supper, we express a unity of faith with one another. “Because there is one loaf; we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf” (I Corinthians 10:17).

3. Our Lord urges us to practice this unity with great love and care. “Whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. Anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself” (1 Corinthians 11:27, 29).

Because we take these truths seriously, we invite all communicant members of our congregation or of a sister congregation in the Wisconsin or Evangelical Lutheran Synods to commune with us today. However, we ask that those who are not members of a sister congregation refrain from taking the Lord’s Supper with us at this time. In doing this, we are not judging anyone’s faith. Out of love for our Lord and all people, we simply desire to discuss the Bible’s teachings with our guests before communing together. We want all who commune to receive the Lord’s Supper for their benefit and in a way that follows our Lord’s instructions. If you have any questions about this or any other teaching of the Bible – or if you would like information about how to join our congregation – please feel free to speak to our Pastor. PRAYER OF THE DAY: Lord God, heavenly Father, we thank and praise you for your great goodness in bringing these young people to the knowledge of your Son, Jesus Christ, and in giving them both the heart to believe and the mouth to confess his saving name. Enable them to bring forth the fruits of faith and to continue steadfast and victorious until the day comes when all who have fought the good fight of faith shall receive the crown of righteousness, through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. FIRST LESSON: JEREMIAH 20:7-12 recorded on page 1206 in the pew Bible

7 O LORD, you deceived me, and I was deceived; you overpowered me and prevailed. I am ridiculed all day long; everyone mocks me. 8 Whenever I speak, I cry out proclaiming violence and destruction. So the word of the LORD has brought me insult and reproach all day long. 9 But if I say, “I will not mention him or speak any more in his name,” his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.10 I hear many whispering, “Terror on every side! Report him! Let’s report him!” All my friends are waiting for me to slip, saying, “Perhaps he will be deceived; then we will prevail over him and take our revenge on him.”

11 But the LORD is with me like a mighty warrior; so my persecutors will stumble and not prevail. They will fail and be thoroughly disgraced; their dishonor will never be forgotten. 12 O LORD Almighty, you who examine the righteous and probe the heart and mind, let me see your vengeance upon them, for to you I have committed my cause.

SECOND LESSON: PHILIPPIANS 3:7-11 recorded on page 1829 in the pew Bible

7 But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. 8 What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God

and is by faith. 10 I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11

and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.

GOSPEL: MATTHEW 23:37 recorded on page 1538 in the pew Bible

37 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing.

SERMON TEXT Matthew 23:37

THE OFFERING

RITE OF CONFIRMATION for Auburn Browne, Zachariah Froehlich, Cameron and Kyle Rittmeyer

THE APOSTLES CREED spoken by the Confirmands with the Congregation I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by

the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER page 32

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Lift high his royal banner; It must not suffer loss. From vict’ry unto vict’ry His army shall he lead Till ev’ry foe is vanquished And Christ is Lord indeed.

v.2 Stand up, stand up for Jesus! The trumpet call obey;

Forth to the mighty conflict In this his glorious day! Ye that are brave, now serve him Against unnumbered foes; Let courage rise with danger And strength to strength oppose.

v.3 Stand up, stand up for Jesus! Stand in his strength alone.

The arm of flesh will fail you; Ye dare not trust your own. Put on the gospel armor; Each piece put on with prayer; Where duty calls or danger, Be never wanting there.

PLEASE STAND

v.4 Stand up, stand up for Jesus! The strife will not be long; This day the noise of battle, The next, the victor’s song. To him that overcometh A crown of life shall be; He with the King of glory Shall reign eternally.

Thank you for honoring our practice of “close” communion. The Bible teaches that participating in the Lord’s Supper is an expression of unity of faith (1 Cor. 10:17). We ask, therefore, that a unity of faith based on the Bible be established through membership in this congregation or in a sister congregation of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod or in

the Evangelical Lutheran Synod. If you would like to discuss “close” communion or any other spiritual matter with the pastor, please call him at 918-4778.

♫ CHOIR ANTHEM Thy Holy Wings

Thy holy wings, dear Savior, Spread gently over me; And thru the long night watches, I’ll rest secure in thee. Whatever may betide me, Be thou my hiding place, And let me live and labor Each day, Lord, by thy grace.

Thy pardon, Savior, grant me, And cleanse me in thy blood; Give me a willing spirit, A heart both clean and good. Oh take into thy keeping Thy children, great and small And, while we sweetly slumber, Enfold us, one and all.
