PRAYER AND REFLECTION July 10, 2016 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time In today’s Gospel, we confront the age-old question: Who is my neighbor? The Good Samaritan story tells us that the question can’t be answered in a logical, legalistic, comfortable way. The Gospel demands a real stretch, and mercy propels us far beyond what appears expedient or even safe. “Neighbor” conjures up a comforting image. But the neighbor in need may not fit our norms or expectations. The Gospel is full of surprises. God calls us to love our neighbor as ourselves, and so we pray for all those who are in reality our neighbors.

For the church: that the extent of our mercy may be unexpected and extravagant ... we pray,

For places where there is violence or war: that mercy may be practiced even in unsafe situations ... we pray,

For those who erect barriers against unwanted neighbors or who fear what they do not know ... we pray,

For immigrants, refugees, outcasts and all who cross boundaries to seek safety ... we pray,

For the political or spiritual will to extend ourselves to neighbors we do not know or trust ... we pray,

For all who live on life’s margins: the poor or homeless, the unemployed or uneducated ... we pray,

For relief organizations, medical groups and all who extend mercy to the unseen suffering ... we pray,

For the needy, the sick and the dying in this community; and for all who have died .. we pray, Prayer: God of endless mercy, you call us to love our neighbors as ourselves. Expand our vision and our hearts to include those we do not yet know and those we may fear. Help us to live and love beyond boundaries. We pray in the name of Jesus, who reconciles all things to himself. Amen.

<<Hope is sure of Pardon and is without fear of being punished. Hope knows of the good works done. Hope is able to be on the lookout for the promised reward>>

~St. John Cassian

July 11, 2016 Prayer to St. Benedict

Saint Benedict (c. 480-543), a man able to read consciences, prophesy the future, and to forestall the attacks of the devil, was born at Nursia in Sabina, Italy. Settling finally on Monte Cassino, he and his followers erected the monastery he was to make famous. There he wrote his Rule, which became the norm for all Western monks. O holy patriarch, Saint Benedict, who didst establish monastic life in the Church of the West, thou hast been blessed both in name and by God's grace. At the close of thy glorious and fruitful life, having received holy Viaticum, and, supported by the arms of thy disciples, thou didst stand with thine hands lifted toward heaven and didst happily give up thy angelic soul into the hands of thy creator. O blessed Saint Benedict, thou hast promised to defend zealously from the snares of the enemy those who call upon thee during their last struggle with death; protect me on this and every day of my life with thy holy blessing, that I may never be separated from our Blessed Lord and the company of the blessed in heaven. Amen. ~saintsonlne
