that the song was translated by Mary Byrne, and it was 1912 before it was versi-fied. Today, the exalted words and Godward vision of the song are loved by be-lievers just as they were hundreds of years ago by the Irish believers. Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, Robert Robinson (1757) Robert Robinson was what you would call an “unruly child.” At only eight years old his father died, and he was raised by his loving mother. In spite of Robert’s intellectual giftedness, he had a penchant for mischief. Robert’s mother sent him off for an apprenticeship when he was only 14, but once he got out of the home his life got worse. Instead of working and learning, Robert chose drinking, gam-bling, and carousing with the wrong crowd. Caught up in his reckless life, Robert and his friends decided to go to an evangelist meeting one night just to heckle the preacher, George Whitfield. Sitting in that meeting however, Robert felt as if the preacher’s words were meant for him alone. He couldn’t shake the feeling that God wanted him to surrender his life and serve him. When he was twenty, Robin-son gave his life to God and entered the Christian ministry. At the age of 22, he wrote the song “Come Thou Fount,” for his church’s Pentecost celebration. It was written as his own spiritual story — a story of pursuing pleasure and joy, and only experiencing it when “Jesus sought me.” Millions of believers can relate to Robinson’s testimony — “Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,” and the glorious testi-mony, “O to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be!” A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, Martin Luther (c. 1528) It is fitting that this hymn, known as “The Battle Hymn of the Reformation,” speaks of fortresses, strategy, ancient foes, and winning the battle. In Martin Lu-ther’s time, it was an all-out battle for the faith. Martin Luther was a bulldog of a defender, going head-to-head with the established church and her officials. He didn’t flinch when challenging the Catholic Church’s departure from the true faith. Even Luther, however, had his bouts of depression. He penned the words to the song around 1527 as a paraphrase of Psalm 46. At times of discouragement, Luther would sometimes turn to his young friend Melanchton, saying, “Let’s sing the Forty-sixth Psalm. He would pull out his lute, and strum the chords of this triumphant song. “A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing.” As the Protestant reformation rolled on, believers often experienced the sting of persecu-tion and even death. In their final moments, many were known to sing that inspir-ing stanza, “Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; the body they may kill; God’s truth abideth still; his kingdom is forever.” How Great Thou Art, Carl Gustav Boberg (1885)

It’s a prayer, a plea, and a declaration of God’s infinite greatness. This song was

written by Carl Gustav Boberg, a 26-year old pastor in Sweden. As the story

goes, Boberg was caught in a thunderstorm one Sunday afternoon after church.

From his perch in the mountains, Boberg watched as the storm swept in with a

bolt of lightning and massive clap of thunder. The storm hurtled through the

meadows and grain fields, reverberating across the countryside with

Children’s and Youth Ministry Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We had 35 children at Kidz Night Out on November 2! Besides that, we had 19 youth and adult helpers from Holy Cross. I love that so many individuals give up a Saturday

evening to bless the children and their parents. Pastor shared a wonderful message about Zacchaeus, pointing out that Jesus knows each of our names. Here is feedback from one of the parents, “Thank you very much for a wonderful event for our children. My two really enjoyed the activities. Their favorite was dancing and soccer. The event was well organized and thoroughly planned out.” One of the faithful volunteers, who helps at almost every Kidz Night Out, said this was the best one yet. May God continue to bless the event! Among our helpers were five Middle School and High School youth. One of our 8th graders led the soccer elective. I was so excited when he said yes to this big responsibility! He did a fantastic job, and with his personality and God given talents, I see more leadership from him in the future. Also showing great leadership was one of our 10th grade girls. She coordinated music for the dance elective and was highly complimented by the leader of the elective. One of the Middle School helpers was a girl who used to attend the Children’s Center and whose brother was here as a participant. I find it inspiring that she attends as a helper, now that she is in Middle School. This time, we also had two 5th graders who were able to be part-time participant and part-time helper. What a neat way for them to bridge from being a child participant to being a youth helper. The younger kids really look up to the youth who are here helping. They set a great example. I was able to spend some time in the nursery with the kids three years old and younger. We had one three-year-old boy who really knew his stuff. He was able to sing along with the Christian songs we played on the CD player and even had his own actions. When we brought out a storybook about creation, he knew the man and woman on the cover were Adam and Eve! This little guy, along with all 34 other kids who were here, helped all of us have a fantastic night. Stay tuned for the spring 2020 Kidz Night Out, so you can come and see for yourself… Our annual Youth Christmas party will be Friday, December 13. Middle School and High School youth are wel-come. We will meet in the youth room at 5:30pm. Youth who attend will get to pick where we go for dinner and what activity we will do that evening. Church covers the cost for the whole night. Friends are welcome! December 15, after the special musical service, we will have our annual Christmas cookie decorating. There will not be Sunday School or Bible study that day. Take the opportunity and invite a neighboring family to church that morning. Together in His service, Betsy Burnham, DCE

Holy Cross Lutheran Church Children’s Center

Here at the Holy Cross Lutheran Children’s Center we are preparing to celebrate the

birthday of Jesus. Here is what we have planned:

Setting up our very own advent wreath and using it to remind ourselves that Jesus is

the light of the world and we are preparing our hearts to celebrate his coming and

look forward to his second coming.

We will learn why it is that we give gifts at Christmas and that God has given us the

best present of all in His son, Jesus!

This year we will assemble a nativity scene during our worship time as one character

is added to the crèche each time we have worship.

We will be preparing advent banners to enhance the narthex for worship.

We hope to share God’s love by singing at one or two care homes in the area.

We have been gathering Christmas gifts for the children of veterans.

We will all bake cookies and then each child will be able to take a plate of cookies

home to their families.

We will decorate a tree in room 6 of the Good News Building with ornaments that

the children have made.

We will have a Christmas party and each child will be able to open a gift for the

whole Center.

After Christmas we will prepare to celebrate Epiphany, the coming of the Magi to

worship Jesus.

It is a joyous time here at the HCLCC and we are so glad that we can show God’s love

to the children and families with the Good News of our Saviors birth and by making

meaningful memories in the lives of the children.

We also wish you and yours a very blessed Christmas!

Christmas Blessing for Needy Families Dear Friends in Christ,

As we head toward Christmas and the end of this year, we reflect on what Christ means

to us in our lives and to realize more fully how He loves each person and wants them to be His follow-

ers. We thank Him for inviting us to join Him on His Mission to be a part of the lives of everyone we

encounter.

As we enjoy this season of celebrating the Lord’s coming, we prayerfully ask you to consider making a

designated donation to Holy Cross’ annual Christmas Blessing Fund. Our focus for the Christmas Bless-

ing will be to continue to provide funds for the 2019-2020 Adopt-A-Family program at Holy Cross. This

program provides funds for families in extreme need—families from our Children’s Center, Holy Cross

members, and those in our community to whom God leads us in their crisis situations. Our Adopt-A-

Family committee works confidentially with Pastor, Cynthia, and each family to ascertain how we can

help, to pray with them, to distribute Target gift cards, gas cards, and to keep in touch to share God’s

love and care to support them at this crucial point in their lives.

This past year our Adopt-A-Family Program helped families from our Holy Cross Children’s Center as

well as families known within Holy Cross and outside in our community who God led to us with crisis

situations. We provided gift cards and prayers for these families in need of food and household goods in

dire financial situations. Over the years Holy Cross has helped many families -- and with your donation,

we can continue to make a difference in their lives through this program. This year’s Christmas Blessing

will focus totally on supporting the Adopt-A-Family endeavor.

Thanks to your generosity we are able to show the ways our Lord provides and points

people to Christ. If you are moved to donate to the Christmas Blessing fund, you may use

the enclosed envelope, use a Designated Gift envelope in your offering envelope box, do-

nate on-line through Tithely, or just write “Christmas Blessing” on the memo line of your

check.

God bless you for your generosity as you extend care to those in need in the Lord’s King-

dom!

In Jesus, Pastor Koschmann, Holy Cross Church Council, and Holy Cross Adopt-A-Family committee

“KIK” are serving the people in Central Asia: Excerpt from a recent newsletter with name changes to protect privacy: “Following One Who Once Followed Mohamed to Messiah Like most new believers here, Z feared persecution. She was careful that others wouldn’t find out she was reading the Bible or going to a Christian service. But after a year of coming to our weekly gathering, she is gradually opening up about her new faith. Recently she had a conflict with her husband. She was frustrated, feeling offended. She got out her audio New Testament, a pocket-sized mp3 player we gave her. Listening to God’s words really calmed her down. When a Russian man at her worksite spotted her with the earphones in her ears, he inquired, “Sister, are you listening to music?” “Yeah, yeah, I’m listening to the music,” Z intended to avoid further investigation, adding, “I’m even dancing!” Then this worker, very curious, took her earphones. Putting them in his ears, he suddenly realized she was listening to something about God. The nominally Russian Orthodox man said, “Sister, you have your own God, Allah. You are a Muslim, a follower of Mohamed.” Z replied, “Yes, we had Mohamed. He was a prophet, and he died. There is only one God, and he sent Isa. Isa died on the cross for us. He poured out his blood to save all people. He also was resurrected. Isa is alive and He is coming again. So that’s the real God that I am following.” The Russian young man was really surprised and kept thinking about what this woman was saying. The next day she saw this worker was drunk. Z said, “Hey, Y, Isa gave His life for you. You should fol-low Him. Rather than ruining your body, you should seek God and ask his forgiveness for not taking care of yourself, for harming your body.” Then, this Russian young man realized Z was a Christian. He was very, very surprised. So, he went to report her to her Muslim husband, “Sir, did you know that your wife is following Isa the Messiah?” Z’s husband, who often derogated her faith, defended her this time, “Yes, she likes to read the Holy Scriptures, and she is following the One Living God.” But then he puts his pointer finger over his lips, whispering, “Sh-hhhh, don’t tell anyone.” This week, Y followed Z to our weekly gathering for the first time. He has been listening to Z’s audio Scripture. How amazing! Z, a Muslim background believer, brings a nominal Russian Orthodox to the Messiah.” Prayer requests:

That God may grant swift & complete healing to K’s mother after her surgery for cancer. And that I & K will be able to carry on during K’s absence to be with his mother.

Pray for all new believers that God would sustain their faith against the immense family & cul-tural pressure to remain Muslim.

Rachel Renken is a missionary member of YWAM (Youth With A Mission) serving in Montana. Rachel will be here with us at Holy Cross on Sunday, January 12th! We’re excited to hear all she has to say about

how God is leading her through different experiences & Bible studies in Montana.

She just transitioned out of running TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and into the Donor

Development Department. She also has a major role in overseeing the dietary needs of staff and students in the

kitchen. On Friday mornings she is working online in the School of Biblical Studies studying scripture which gives

her great delight.

For Joni & Friends Ministries as they serve so many families affected by disabilities:

Prayer requests: Please pray for their witness to the people of Taiwan, pray for

the study time they have been granted in St. Louis from Septem-

ber through December 2019. We thank God that they will be

able to be at Holy Cross on Sunday, Dec. 29, sharing the Word

and their experiences as they are with Jesus on His Mission in

Taiwan.

Pray also for Pastor Scharrer at China Lutheran Seminary and his
