A Letter From Mr. Stephen • An awning was constructed above a large portion of the staff patio to create more shaded outdoor space. Finally, the entire building was repainted.
• The soft play surfaces on both ECE playgrounds were replaced.
• The swimming pool underwent a complete replastering, with the installation of new water level tiles and coping.
• Smartboards were added to the Kindergarten Classrooms.
• Custom Schoolhouse room signs were installed throughout the campus, to provide a unified and personal look to specific locations.
Thanks to the generous efforts of many, the 2013-14 Schoolhouse Fund saw its most successful year to date. Contributions to the Schoolhouse fund went up 12.5% from the year prior, raising just under $300,000. This campaign now brings in ten times as many dollars as it did ten years ago, which is a testament to our immense and important growth as a community. For the first time ever, the participation level of parents, faculty and staff, and the Board of Trustees was 100%. Additionally, Parent Association fundraising grew 22% during the 2013-14 school year, bringing in just under $125,000.
It is with much pride and gratitude that I share our 2013-14 Annual Report with you.
• In the preschool, we constructed dividing walls with pocket doors to create four separate classrooms. Each classroom now has its own door for access to the playground.
• We installed double glazed doors and windows for better sound proofing. Similar door and window replacements were completed upstairs in the Highland Building, and the faculty and staff lounge was enlarged and re-outfitted with a new kitchen and furniture.
Mr. Stephen BloodworthHead of School
It is with much pride that I take a moment to reflect on the many accomplishments of our school during the 2013-14 school year.
In preparation for our accreditation with CAIS (California Association of Independent Schools) and WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges), we completed our Self Study document. It outlines how effectively the Schoolhouse meets or exceeds the 16 standards that CAIS and WASC deem critical in promoting educational excellence. This process reminded us of our accomplishments as a growing school that challenges children to be independent risk-takers in their learning, while simultaneously developing in them an enlightened world view that is inclusive, empathetic, and encourages civic responsibility, and involvement.
Additionally, as we waited to complete the permit process with the City of Los Angeles for the McCadden South Building, we chose to move forward with significant campus renovations, some of which are part of the school’s overall Master Plan.

OUR MISSION AND PURPOSE:The Mission of the Hollywood Schoolhouse is to nurture the whole child within a diverse community, combining challenging academics with creative learning, where each child is known, encouraged, and valued.
WE BELIEVE THAT:All students can succeed academically when given the opportunity to learn in a balanced program, which includes directed/undirected, individual and cooperative activities. Student achievement is our top priority and all of our program goals are designed to ensure student success. Students should be lifelong learners who are encouraged to strive for personal excellence.
Parents, teachers, children, and administrators must work together to build a strong, caring, and stimulating community environment. Change is positive and new ideas and experiences provide opportunities for growth and creative thought. Diversity is a strength. By enhancing each student’s self esteem, all students will achieve their highest potential. Instruction should be culturally responsive, free of bias, and compatible with the values of students’ own cultures.
STUDENT LEARNING EXPECTATIONS: Hollywood Schoolhouse students will be self-directed, lifelong learners who communicate effectively through reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
Hollywood Schoolhouse students will be critical thinkers who are able to apply problem-solving skills in a changing society in preparation for their future. Hollywood Schoolhouse students will be civic-minded contributors who have knowledge of, and respect for, the global community.
Hollywood Schoolhouse students will apply acquired knowledge and skills to be creative and quality producers.
Our job here in school is to learn.
Hopefully we will become lifelong learners.
In that process, we will try to care very much for each other.
This day has been given to me fresh and clear,I can either use it or throw it away.
I promise myself that I shall use this day to the fullest, realizing that it can never come back again.
I realize that this is my life to use or to throw away.
I am the only person who has the power to decide what I will be.

Parent Associat ion
We would like to thank all of those who volunteered their time during the 2013-14 school year or contributed in-kind donations for the Gala Auction, Winter Festival Baskets, Linden Center Holiday Drive, and so much more. Thank you for being such positive role models for our students.
Our community would not be the same without your spirited involvement and dedication.
The Parent Association sponsors many events and ongoing activities each year. The Spring Gala, Back to School Barbecue, and Winter Festival are just a few examples of the treasured Schoolhouse traditions made possible by our Parent Association's generosity of time, energy, and resources. In addition, our Parent Association coordinates our monthly dinners for PATH (People Assisting the Homeless), Service Learning, and Regional Socials. Aside from the sense of community fostered by these events, significant funds are raised each year which are put towards Financial Aid, and other programs in need as identified by the Executive Board.

Our capital campaign was launched in 2012 to fund two new buildings and major renovations to our campus. This campaign is a major part of our current strategic plan - intended to enhance, but not expand, our current campus footprint. Divided into three phases, the Building Excellence campaign is designed to maintain a fully functional campus at all times and allow for short pauses in between each phase. Phase One was completed in the Spring of 2013, and in the Summer of 2014 we completed several of the smaller Phase Two projects.
We would like to thank all donors to the Building Excellence campaign to date for all they have made possible so far, and for inspiring the rest of the HSH community to help us reach our goals in the years to come.

In the four years I’ve been involved with Big Sunday, our school community has touched a great many lives in a variety of ways. We could not have done it without the leadership and inspiration of a lot of people -- chiefly amongst them, our own head of school, Stephen Bloodworth. Lee Winkleman, Loren Rubin, Joanna Going and Chambers Stevens have all been instrumental in helping conceive and execute what otherwise might have only been some half-baked ideas.
Four years ago, Lee had us fan out across the city to the five different People Assisting the Homeless (PATH) locations to scrub and clean, as well as organize and donate clothes, shoes, and household wares to our partners at PATH. We also planted trees and installed commemorative plaques along Highland Avenue between Santa Monica Boulevard and DeLongpre Avenue.
Three years ago, we planted sustainable fruits and vegetables in pots and plots around the PATH campus headquarters while our children and the children of PATH painted tiles together, which were later fired and mounted on a legacy wall at PATH to remind us of our commitment to community service and to PATH. We even kicked off the event a day early with a power washing of the facility. (It is not a well-kept secret that Mr. Stephen has a particular affinity/talent for power-washing in the event you find yourself searching for the ultimate Christmas present.)
Two years ago, our children and theirs drew pictures of the journeys they’d been on, and the places they could only dream of going. The artwork was adapted into a magnificent and colorful mural we painted together on the PATH playground.
This past year, the mural painting, cleanup, and gardening were brought back to HSH with help from our neighbors at the LGBT Youth Center next door and thirty high school kids from Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA). Together we painted a mural on our JK yard and tended to the green spaces we had spruced up four years ago. Over the last several years, each event was capped with a BBQ for all who participated.
With the help of many hands and many voices we are helping to shape a community of empathetic and understanding children eager to express themselves and unafraid to meet the challenges of the world around them. It has been my great privilege and honor to be the Big Sunday captain three years in a row, and I look forward to charting new territory next year.
Best regards,
Douglas McDonald

Schoolhouse Fund The Schoolhouse Fund is our annual campaign to bridge the gap between tuition and the true cost of educating a child at Hollywood Schoolhouse. This is our biggest fundraiser of the school year, and a cornerstone of philanthropy at Hollywood Schoolhouse. The Schoolhouse Fund provides immediate financial support for our program, and is used within the fiscal year. These gifts ensure that we can live our mission on a daily basis, while strategically planning for our future generations of students.
Bui lding Excel lenceIn 2013, our Board of Trustees, in consultation with the Head of School, launched the Building Excellence capital campaign, developed as a part of our 2012 Master Plan. The Building Excellence campaign will expand outdoor play space, increase Elementa-ry classroom space, and introduce much-needed multipurpose space for extracurricular and enrichment activi-ties. We are currently fundraising for Phase 2 of 3, and look forward to our continued growth as a community.
