Hollis Energy Committee
Hollis Energy Committee (HEC) came into existence in September 2009 with the Charter:
To promote energy conservation and efficiency through sustainable energy
practices
Hollis Energy Committee
We planned to meet our Charter goals in two phases:
Phase I: Convert all municipal buildings to be energy efficient and maintain up to date EPA Portfolio Manager
Phase II: Develop sustainable energy sources for electricity, heating/cooling, and transportation
Hollis Energy Committee
EPA Portfolio Manager:
Set-up EPA Portfolio Manager for Hollis municipal buildings
EPA Portfolio Manager gave us a clear priority for addressing energy efficiency and conservation issues
It was very clear that upgrading the electrical lighting had the greatest return on the investment
Hollis Energy Committee
Phase I Efforts: Energy Efficiency & Conservation
Received $250,000 federal grant and $245,000 interest free loan from PSNH – 2012
Upgraded all the electrical lighting systems
Working with NRPC, signed PPARealizing a combined savings of $128K/yr.
Hollis Energy Committee
Phase I Efforts: Energy Efficiency & Conservation
Using $70K of Federal Grant, performed ASHREA Level III energy audits
We now have a road map to future energy efficiency & conservation activities
Hollis Energy Committee
Phase II Efforts: (Renewable Energy Strategies) Heating and Hotwater:Received a grant from NH Wood Energy Council in July 2014 for feasibility study for Hollis District Heating System using wood chips. Feasibility study is just completed
Electricity:We will work in collaboration with SAU41 and NRPC to develop PV solar, Geothermal, and Wind Energy strategies for Hollis and towns that are willing to work together with us.
Transportation:Conduct feasibility studies for use of bio-fuels and emerging technologies
Heating & Hot Water SolutionTown & School Buildings
Why Woodchip (Biomass) Systems:
Saves Hollis Tax payers $$$ BTU to BTU, wood chips are 70% cheaper than oil (wood
pellets are 50% cheaper) Cost of woodchips very stable for last decade (3% increase)
Keeps fuel dollars in local economy & helps create jobs in New Hampshire Over 80% of heating in NH is supplied by imported fossil
fuels NH exports about $1 Billion annually to import fossil
heating fuels NH is second most dependent state in the country on
heating oil (Maine is #1)
Renewable and Sustainable 84% of NH is forest Wood chip based district heating systems are matured
technology
Current Fuel cost$130,000.00/yr.
Proposed FuelCost - $50,000/yr.
Estimated Savings$80,000.00/yr.
