WELCOME TO THE
HOLLAND DANCE FESTIVAL 2014!
— Samuel Wuersten - Artistic & General Director Holland Dance Festival
vernieuwing. Laten we dat zo houden…
Tijdens de voorbereidingen van deze veer-
tiende editie van het Holland Dance Festival
was ik gefascineerd door de uiteenlopende
manieren waarop dans in verschillende
culturen over de hele wereld is ingebouwd.
Mijn nieuwsgierigheid bracht me ver van Eu-
Opnieuw is danshoofd-
Geniet ervan!
Dance is a universal phenomenon, uninhibited by language
barriers yet clearly rooted in a wide range of different cultures
across the world. The dance profile of the Netherlands is dis-
tinct and highly respected internationally. Our
country is known for its dance companies and
artists, as well as for its visionary infrastructure
for dance and its sense of innovation. Let’s keep
it that way…
When preparing for this fourteenth edition of
the Holland Dance Festival, I was fascinated by
the different ways dance is embedded in diffe-
rent cultures around the world. My curiosity took
me as far from Europe as Australia, New Zealand,
Brazil and Cuba. In these countries, I found it par-
ticularly captivating to see how ancient traditions inform the
contemporary identity of dance. This is quite different from the
way dance has been established in our part of the world, where
it is less defined by indigenous influences and more in line with
the traditions of formal and social dancing.
The line-up for this year’s festival is diverse and exciting.
Kicking off with our Source of Inspiration Gala, most of the
guest companies or productions that follow are being presen-
ted for the first time here in the Netherlands. Once again, the
dance capital of The Hague forms an international focal point
for dance. The Holland Dance Festival’s inclusive ‘see-do-
experience-approach’ gives people of all generations and
backgrounds the opportunity to enjoy dance. On a practical
note, we have paid particular attention to making the festival
activities affordable, in view of the current economic climate.
Nobody should have to miss out!
After 27 years, the Holland Dance Festival and the Holland
Dance organisation are continuing their mission to bring
dance closer to audiences. The part played in this by commu-
nity arts and education is just as important as our continued
success in bringing unique and exciting dance productions
from all over the world to the Netherlands and to its dance
capital The Hague. Enjoy!

Interview

Dance with the euphoria of a rock concert
— Canadian dancer and choreographer Eric Gauthier has turned the German dance world upside down with his group Gauthier Dance. The company, founded in autumn 2007, has succeeded in hiring one leading choreographer after another, although Gauthier’s choice of repertoire is distinct. He does not go for ‘deep, dark’ productions, but is determined to show the sunny side of modern dance. The German audiences react euphorically. “It’s a magical expe-rience”, says Holland Dance Festival director Samuel Wuer-sten, who is bringing the company to the Netherlands for the first time.
You only have to talk to Eric Gauthier (36, born in Montréal) for a few minutes to understand his biggest trump card: the man is an absolute whirlwind, and exudes unadulterated passion. “I took a good look at the state of the modern dance scene in Germany”, he says about the run-up to his success. “Germany has a great many companies, but the focus is
P. 13
on heavy, intellectual productions that don’t exactly invite audiences to understand anything of what’s happening on stage.”Gauthier’s vision of dance is clearly different. “I love athletic dance that erupts from the stage. I love humour and irony. In German art circles, that’s dangerous, as humour is easily perceived as something commercial. I don’t understand that. People go to the theatre in order to escape daily life. So isn’t it important that they can also make acquaintance with the sunny side of modern dance?”It seems that audiences think likewise, as even in the biggest German theatres, performances by Gauthier Dance are now often sold out months in advance. “People get excited, and sometimes jump up out of their seats to show their enthusiasm during our performances. It’s the same euphoria I feel when I go to a rock concert.”
Rock ‘n’ rollGauthier often draws a comparison between dance and pop music. Besides being a dancer (he danced eleven years with Stuttgarter Ballett, seven of which as a principal) and a choreographer, he is a singer, guitarist and composer with his own band, Eric Gauthier & Band. “When Reid Anderson, the former artistic director of The National Ballet of Canada, asked me to follow him to Stuttgart at the age of seventeen, I had only one dream: I wanted to dance the prince in Swan Lake and Romeo in Romeo and Juliet. But later on, the need for another sort of outlet developed as well. Ballet is very precise and refined, whereas with my band I could jump around with my guitar and go wild.”At the age of thirty, he thought the time was ripe for more ‘rock ‘n’ roll’, so he left Stuttgarter Ballett and formed his own dance company. Since then, he has succeeded in engaging choreographers like Jiří Kylián, Hans van Manen, Lightfoot & León and Christian Spuck. “Precisely because of the limited size of Gauthier Dance (thirteen dancers – ed.), I’ve managed to acquire numerous choreographic gems that are hardly ever performed by the big companies.” He also prefers ‘short stories’ to ‘hefty novels’, which means that his performances often consist of five or more short works, brought together under appealing titles like ‘HIGH FIVE’, ‘SIX PACK’ and ‘LUCKY SEVEN’.As a choreographer, he says he has absolutely no pretention to becoming the new Kylián or Forsythe. “My pieces are theatrical and humorous. My greatest strength is probably that I can conjure up a smile on people’s faces.” This quality also comes in useful in the many performances given outside the theatre, under the name of Gauthier Dance Mobile. “After dancing myself for years on the biggest
stages, I realise all too well that dance is usually only for the lucky few. There are so many people who don’t get the opportunity of going to the theatre.” And so he brings dance to sick children, and the elderly, handicapped and underprivileged. “It regularly happens that my dancers are performing in the evening for an audience of a thousand, and the following morning for ten children in a hospital. But it’s precisely this sort of performance that leads to unforgettable experiences. Being hugged after the show by a group of wildly enthusiastic handicapped people touches you far more deeply than getting a good review and your photo in the paper.”
A quick, wild foxIn the Holland Dance Festival, Gauthier Dance is presenting five works, four of which have been made especially for the group and are thus new to the Netherlands. The first work, I found a Fox (also being performed at the HDF opening gala), he is dancing himself. “It’s a solo that Marco Goecke made for me. The title comes from one of the accompanying songs by Kate Bush, but according to Marco it also refers to me, as in his eyes I’m a quick, wild fox”. Gauthier has received two nominations for ‘Dancer of the year’ for the work. The other premieres are by Cayetano Soto, Itzik Galili and Gauthier himself. “Cayetano’s Malasangre is a wonderfully energetic and athletic work to songs by the Cuban singer La Lupe.” Gauthier sings a snatch of a tune from her Guantanamera, and then continues, “We’re dancing Itzik’s Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White, an extremely virtuoso and humorous pas de deux that fits our company like a glove.” For Takuto, Gauthier’s own ‘big show number’, the source of inspiration was a performance by the Japanese Yamato drummers. “Their concert was fantastic, but I found it lacking in movement. So my own group do both drumming and dancing.”As a finale ballet, Gauthier is presenting Cantata by Mauro Bigonzetti. “It’s an absolute masterpiece, in which various characters from an Italian village come to life.” Unlike performances elsewhere, the work is performed to live music by the Italian folk group Assurd. And Bigonzetti added a section especially for Gauthier Dance, choreographed for the now 71-year-old dancer from NDT 3, Egon Madsen. Gauthier says, “Egon and I go back a long way, and his role in the piece is a real asset.”At the moment, Gauthier – who is now the father of two boys – doesn’t have much time to perform with his band. “But”, he says, “thinking up dance productions is actually much like writing songs. You have to be continually creative, and keep on surpassing yourself and creating magic time after time.”

The celebration of a dance culture that goes back 40.000 years.
— ‘‘Highly theatrical’, ‘mysterious’, ‘spiritual’ and ‘absolutely engrossing’. This is how the performances of Bangarra Dance Theatre are often characterized. The first indigenous dance company of Australia mixes traditional dance and music of the many Aboriginal and the Torres Strait Islander cultures with modern dance. Artistic director Stephen Page advises the uninformed spectator to watch Kinship, the production that his company will be performing in the Holland Dance Festival, with an open mind. “Come on our journey and feel the connection with an ancient past.”
Australia is not just a continent with completely different landscapes, it is also a mainland with countless cultures and the dance styles connected to them. Stephen Page: “Before the western invasion more than a thousand aboriginal dialects were spoken in Australia. The various clans each had their own traditional customs, their dances, their music, costumes etcetera. Australia harbors an entire universe in its own backyard, there is enormous cultural wealth, but a lot has been lost since the colonization when ceremonies and traditions were simply forbidden.”Page – 48 years old but still sporting boyish looks – is from South East Queensland. His ancestors were part of the Nunukul people and the Munaldjali clan of the Yugambeh tribe. “I am one of twelve children and the whitest of the bunch. Perhaps not everybody knows that Aboriginals come in all shades and colors.” From 1982 to 1985 Page studied at what is now called NAISDA Dance College, the first official academy that engages in indigenous Australian dances. “We were mainly taught by Aboriginals from the North because more of the dance culture was preserved there, and it was wonderful to connect to my own ancestry through their traditions.”Page then switched to the world of modern dance, but

returned after the Dance College generated the first indigenous dance company of Australia: Bangarra Dance Theatre. He has been at the head of the company since 1991 and his unique programming has lured spectators around the world into an intriguing, mythical universe with roots that go back about 40.000 years.
Aboriginal-Swanlake When combining modern dance techniques and traditional dance styles, respect and knowledge about the stories hidden behind the traditions are always priorities for Page. “I feel that you just cannot create some nice ‘fusion-dance’, you have to use your integrity. You constantly have to take into account the meaning of the stories and traditions that have been passed on, or you have to look for it. Fortunately I have an entire team of experts that advises and supports me when I am making the choreographies.”For Brolga, the first part of Kinship, Page was inspired by the aboriginal custom whereby every human has a symbol of protection or totem in the shape of an animal or plant. “As a starting point I used the myth that was passed on about a young girl that goes out hunting, does not return in time, and then gradually but surely transforms into her totem, a common crane, and as such discovers a sensual and magical world. You could call it”, he says smiling, “our version of Swanlake.”In ID, the second part of the performance, Page refers to the present. ID deals with issues of identity and the need of many Aboriginals to connect to their origins and heritage. “It wasn’t until the referendum of 1967 that Aboriginals were declared human, until then they were subject to the flora and fauna law. And it wasn’t until 2008 that the Australian government formally apologized for the laws and politics of previous governments.” Those led, among other things, to the removal of aboriginal children from their parents to be
raised by ‘white Australians’. “No wonder then that many of them struggle with identity problems. The drug and alcohol abuse is rampant and on top of that, they are also confront-ed with unemployment, expropriation by western compa-nies and still a very negative image.”This sounds like ‘heavy stuff’ as inspiration for a dance pro-duction, but, Page stresses, “ID, certainly doesn’t only focus on the problems, it is foremost also a celebration of and tribute to our culture. Sure, we deal with social issues but we counteract with a lot of optimism, exuberance and even humor.”
Hunger and fireThe dancers of Bangarra – currently the permanent resident company of the prestigious Sydney Opera House – all have an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island background with great diversity: “Most of them took dance training, at NAISDA or elsewhere, but there are some who we take on as trainees who come to us to dance with such hunger and fire that we hire them. And precisely that diversity makes our company so special.”Still Page is slightly nervous for the first performance of his company in the Netherlands. “For us Holland is ‘the mother of the dance’. We know the work of the Nederlands Dans Theater very well, and have great admiration for Jiří Kylián who – very remarkable for a western modern choreographer – over thirty years ago let himself be inspired by the Aboriginal culture.” Page realizes that – especially for the experienced Dutch dance aficionado – Bangarra occupies a very specific niche within international dance. “Maybe what we do is not for everyone, and that is fine. But for those who can open up to it – even without any knowledge about or experience with indigenous dance – a very special journey awaits and hopefully even a conscious or subconscious spiritual experience.”

— “Megalomanie is overal”, aldus choreograaf Frédéric Flamand.

Titanic: the downside of progress
— “Megalomania is everywhere”, says choreographer Frédéric Flamand. “First the tallest building is in New York, and then an even taller one rises up in Dubai.” The passionate artistic director of Ballet National de Marseille is fascinated, if not obsessed by the relationship between man and technology, and our eternal urge to progress. He worked with the Italian artist Fabrizio Plessi on creating his own megalomaniac dream: Titanic, an impressive spectacle inspired by the best-known shipping disaster of all time.
According to the French choreographer Frédéric Flamand, dance is the perfect medium for speaking to the world about current affairs. “We live in a world where more and

more robots are appearing, and where technology is incre-asingly taking over the role of humans. Our body is the only thing – for the moment – that is still untouched and com-pletely our own, and with that body we can express emoti-ons and show vulnerability, which no machine whatsoever is capable of doing.”Flamand (56) created a first version of Titanic in 1992 for the Belgian company Charleroi/Danses, which he directed for fifteen years. “It was the time in which many coalmines in Charleroi were closing. The city was faced with the huge challenge of making the switch to another era, and I was fascinated by the post-industrial atmosphere there.” Titanic was the central section of a trilogy about mankind and tech-nology, in which the first production, La Chute d’Icare, took place in the Renaissance, and the third, Ex Machina, dealt with the subject of modern technology. “Titanic was the only narrative production of the three. I show the different worlds: that of the high hopes and expectations at the lau-nch of the ship, that of the luxury and longing for adventure on the upper deck, and that of the toil and sweat in the en-gine room.” Yet Flamand says that the production is more a poetic allusion to all the events on and around the ship than a literal representation of them. “You don’t have to draw a disaster in detail in order to evoke its impact.”
Food for thoughtFor Ballet National de Marseille, where he has been artistic director for the past nine years, Flamand made a new ver-sion of his production last year – a hundred years after the sinking of the Titanic. He thinks that the shipping disaster of 1912 still gives plenty of food for thought, and that it has many connections to our world today. “For me, the story is a metaphor for the transition from one era to another, and all the problems associated with that transition, like the current financial crisis, for example. But the fate of the Tita-nic is also a analogy of man’s eternal urge to progress and his continual desire to be faster, better and more inventive than his predecessors or competitors, even though we see around us every day how things can go wrong. Technologi-
cal progress is extremely fragile. If systems fail, before you know it half the world has come to a standstill.”As a spectator however, says Flamand, you don’t need this sort of association to be moved by Titanic. “Everyone is free to view the production from their own personal experience and ideas. While one person might enjoy it as a large-scale, cinematic spectacle in which you travel from one world to another, someone else could well be inspired to reflection.”
From hype to hypeIn 1994, Flamand’s company Charleroi/Danses danced Titanic in Belfast, where the last twenty survivors of the di-saster were sitting in the audience. “It was a very emotional experience, and they were all deeply moved.” None of them were still around for the centenary memorial of the disaster, last year. “The fact that I revived Titanic for the occasion was partly due to my belief that in these days of media com-motion, we live too much from one moment of hype to the next, without looking back at the past and learning from it.” But Flamand – who will soon be exchanging his artistic directorship in Marseille for the job of associate director of Mons Cultural Capital of Europe – was also curious as to what Ballet de Marseille could add to his production. “The choreography demands very diverse qualities. There’s the powerful, extremely physical dance of the ship workers, and then there’s the elegant, almost neo-classical dance of the passengers on the upper deck. When I created Titanic in Charleroi, the production was rougher and less polished, but now it has evolved. The dancers have played a big part in that. Some sections have been scrapped or changed, but elements have also been added, such as a role for a woman on pointe dressed in white. You could say she represents both the iceberg and the human pursuit of perfection.”The scale of the production means that Titanic is also a sort of ‘Titanic’ or risky enterprise in Flamand’s career. “An idiotic project; a utopia”, he says himself. “I don’t know whether I’d ever produce such a large-scale spectacle again, but I’m glad I did it. It’s important as an artist to create new utopias, and to make the impossible possible now and then.”

Dans gaat bijvoorbeeld over
Doorlopende leerlijn

jectweek organiseren.” Het kan, onder het motto See, do,
reflect and experience, allemaal.
nodig is.

‘Ongeacht cultuur of taal: iedereen kent pijn, begrijpt pijn.’ Mesquita dompelde zich onder in films als Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Tie Me Up, Tie

‘If you get the opportunity to see the work of Okareka Dance Company, seize it’, that’s what the international press wrote after the premiere of Tama Ma. Okareka is a relatively young company from New Zealand that draws from its rich Maori themes to create contemporary and moving dance performances. Tama Ma tells the autobiographical dance story of two men who travel from boyhood to manhood, and the real life tale of love, life, joy and sorrow.

After her American debut, The New York Times declared that the Brazilian Mimulus Cia de Dança was ‘an elixir that should be sold in bottles’. The dancers of the group seem to be loaded with dynamite but are simultaneously incredibly sensual. Artistic leader Jomar Mesquita quotes from South American dance styles like the tango, samba, salsa, meringue and rhumba and enmeshes these with contemporary influences. For Dolores he was inspired by the iconic Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar. The spectator looks through his lens at a world of passion and longing and the thin line between obsession and pain.

What makes this group so special is her inextinguishable passion, charismatic appeal and the powerful dance. In Showroom choreographer Susana Pous once again delves into the wondrous world of Havana, this time in the nocturnal cabaret scene of club Tropicana set in the fifties of the previous century.

The young Dutch choreographer Joeri Dubbe won two major awards last year: the highly coveted BNG Prize for New Theatre maker, and the Prize of the Nederlandse Dansdagen. This paved the way for a second full length performance. With a magnificent cast of dancers he explores a phenomenon that largely controls man’s thinking and his way of life: power. The world is perceived as a pyramid, with only a few and finally just one person at the top. It is a way of thinking that is ageless, but – this is the question that Dubbe poses to himself – is it still what we want today?
Solaris is a Korzo production.

‘We are connecting the elite with the street’, luidt de opvatting van het jongste gezelschap van Nieuw-Zeeland.

In their latest production eight dancers of the New Zealand Dance Company together with musicians from the Nederlandse Brassband Rijnmond, bring the world of the ‘rotunda’ alive, a classic construction with a circular design.
At 70 guitarist Paco Peña, one of the greatest names in Spanish flamenco, is still outstanding. He reaffirms this with Quimeras, a sparkling production for which he assembled an international top cast. The production impressively highlights the theme of racial discrimination and the immigration of, specifically, Africans to the ‘auspicious’ Europe. For that reason dancers and musicians from Senegal and Guinea are part of the production, together with famous flamenco artists.

In the Odyssey by Lonneke van Leth Productions the age old itinerary is retold. This is done with the use of the disciplines of dance, image and live music. In multi-coloured and spectacular scenes we see Odysseus torn from his young family to go off to war. The gods are not charmed by his character and therefore create a quest for him that he will have to finish before he can return to his family. He goes on a journey filled with lust and suffering where he often encounters trouble, because of his fellow travelers, his men.

A lively discussion and exchange between artists who create and/or perform dance about their love affair with the public. How does an expected but absent audience influence the process of creation? Can one create for an audience and if so, how? What are definitions of connecting a dance production to an audience? Inspired practices in exploring performance formats.

The Holland Dance Festival’s festive Source of Inspiration gala is the occasion of the fifth presentation of the Jiří Kylián Ring. In 2012, the ring was received by Ingrid Wolff, artistic director of 2 Turven Hoog, who was praised for her role in making dance accessible for children. Wolff will now be passing on the prestigious award to someone who has made a significant and inspiring contribution to dance in the Netherlands.
The Ring award was established in 2006 by the Dutch Dance Festival and presented to Jiří Kylián in honour of his mastery. Kylián was asked to pass the ring on in due course to an artist who, like himself, was a source of inspiration and innovation within the world of dance. At the Dutch Dance Festival in 2008, he passed on the Ring to choreographer Michael Schumacher, who was acclaimed for his ‘improvisation skills, the enthusiasm he conveys to young dancers, and his passionate collaboration with artists from other disciplines’.
The Ring was designed by Hans Appenzeller and consists of a set of 14 rings; one ring for each letter of the award. The rings are on a ring measuring stick and vary in size. The recipient of the award can choose a ring that fits and keep it when he or she hands on the award. A new ring is made for the empty place on the ring measuring stick. The winner also receives a financial incentive of five thousand Euros from the Jiří Kylián Foundation.
