2010 Change of Watch

“Since 1961, the leadership of Harbor Island Yacht Club has passed through many Commodores, just as the Club’s Burgee and the Commodore’s Private Signal Flag have passed through many hands...” So the Change of watch ceremony begins each year. If you have never been to one of these grand events held at the First Quarterly meeting of the new year, you have truly missed something wonderful. To see the Flags pass through the ranks of our former Commodores is nothing short of an historic event. This year we had 17 of our past Commodores present representing 46 years of time honored tradition and service.

As well as the Passing of the Flag Ceremony, the Change of Watch is also the time our club recognizes Individual members in several different categories. This years recipients were as follows: Please Join me in congratulating these members for there achievements and contributions.

Commodore Comments

As I take the helm at HIYC, I remember the first time I was given the helm as a young boy. I was on Center Hill Lake with my Uncle James and he had a small pleasure powerboat. As any young boy, I thought that was the coolest thing ever. He made a deal with me that day. If I would clean his boat, he would let me drive her. I never worked so hard in my life to please him so I could have that opportunity to take the helm of that boat.

Now as I enter a new decade and Harbor Island Yacht Club celebrates its 50th year, I find myself taking over the helm as the 50th Commodore with great excitement. This coming year, the Board of Governors plans to celebrate our 50 years with a big event that will be held on April 24th. We will start the day with the Tennessean Cruiser Regatta and finish it at the Vanderbilt University Club with a nice dinner, along with dancing into the night with the Craig Duncan Band. Make sure you watch for the announcements for the HIYC 50th Year Anniversary Homecoming Celebration. We will also have our traditional events and regattas to round out the year. Also, we plan to have another great year with our youth sailing programs.

Each year the new Commodore has a special agenda of items to accomplish during his or her term. As I was sitting in the wings the last 2 years, I realized that our clubhouse was in need of many repairs. So I decided it was time to give the clubhouse a refit. My list of repairs starts with replacing the old windows and putting on a new roof. I also have plans to remodel the old sun room and turn it into a room full of HIYC history.

In closing, I look forward to the coming year, working hard and serving as this year’s Commodore.

Grateful,JB Copeland

The Board of Governors has revised/clarified the Station Rules regarding the use of Club Power to insure insurance coverage to our club as a corporation while our members are operating the clubs power boats as follows:

CLUB POWER BOATS. (Rev 11/09) The power boats exist for the purpose of running HIYC races, sailing camp and as rescue boats. They will not be used for cruising, fishing, or water-skiing. The Power Boat Chairman is responsible for their upkeep, repair and safety. Only club members who have received safety and operational instruction by the Power Boat Chairman for each of the clubs power boats may use the boats that they have been checked out on and then, solely for the performance of their assigned duties. The Board of Governors grants permission to operate the power boats of HIYC to:

Member race officers and their assistants in any regatta or race,1. Member staff and faculty of HIYC Junior Training Program and Summer/Sailing Camp,2. Member power boat maintenance officers and their assistants,3. HIYC Harbormaster and his or her assistants and4. Any member for the purpose of life saving or recovering boats that slip their moorings or need rescue.5.

Anyone that needs to use the clubs power boats for any other reason than those defined above needs prior Board of Governors Approval.

A Brick for A Refit As we celebrate our 50th year in 2010 at Harbor Island Yacht Club, Our Club House that was built in

the mid 70’s needs a refit. The house needs new energy efficient windows and doors. The old appli-ances in our kitchen could do with an upgrade. The sun room needs to be remodeled and put to good use. The exterior could use a new fresh coat of paint. The steps are on their last legs and we could go on and on with the other repairs the house requires.

***************************************************************************

How can you help? The Board is asking for a minimum donation (non tax-deductible) of $100.00 to receive a Brick from the Old Club House Fireplace. Our goal is to raise $20,000.00 which would pay for these upgrades. ***************************************************************************

With every souvenir brick, you will receive the history of the old club house and a photo copy of Arnold Nye’s painting of the house (now hanging in the new club house) which is Suitable for Framing.

Sea Scouts News

You open your eyes after a wonderful night’s sleep on the hook. Arriving on deck you look around and see small islands all around you. You’re on a wonderful charter with friends in a beautiful location. Today you need to work your way through several of the islands to your next destination. Additionally there will be some current to deal with and areas where it’s too shallow to navigate. But it’s ok, you have your handy handheld GPS with you. But wait…NO…the batteries are DEAD!!! So what do you do now? Guess you’ll have to do it the old way. Get out the hand bearing compass, charts and navigation gear. Oh!!! Do you know how to use that stuff?

Most of January and February, HIYC’s Sea Scouts are going to be working on Navigation skills. We started with the simple stuff. What’s a hand bearing compass. How do you read a chart. How do you determine position based upon compass bear-ings and near by points of land or navigation aids such as buoys. As simple as it sounds, it takes some practice to get right. We want to thank Scott Howard for coming to our Jan 21st meeting to teach. He actually uses this stuff on a daily basis in his job as first mate on a 220 foot cruise ship. His insight in this area was wonderful. We’ve also got some plans for the kids to build their own sextants using common CD’s with cases and some mirrors. Which should make for a fun evening. Then we’ll be discussing the concepts which will allow the kids to actually use some of the math they learned in school but wondered if it was really important. And what about ‘Set’ and ‘Drift’. And…. well you get the point. There really is a lot to this navigation stuff. But done right it can re-ally be fun as well as useful. In the past we’ve had some Scouts that really got excited about doing the navigation. Hopefully this time we’ll also be able to inspire some of them again.

Welcome New Members!

The Allegras, Mark, Denise, Zack, Emily & Mary-Kate

We grew up in New York, met in high school, and then went on to attend Hofstra University where Mark obtained a BS in Engineering and Denise a BA in Psychology. We moved to South Florida where our first two children Zach 12, and Emily 9, were born. It wasn’t until we moved to TN and had our third child Mary-Kate 5, that we decided to fulfill our lifelong dream of owning a sailboat.

We are active in both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Mark often attends campouts from surviving in the wilderness to skiing. Denise leads Emily’s troop as well as running a Service Unit of 500 girls in Williamson County. We are looking forward to sailing this summer and making many new sailing friends.
