Potentate From page 1events to look forward to. We will be doing some updates to the inside of the building. On April 6, we will be having a Table Lodge (We will be loading the cannons, and we will fire the cannons). Spring Ceremonial on May 5, we will be adding the Knickerbocker Degree to the 1st Section. Midian is the only Shrine Center in the world to put this on. The Knickerbocker Degree is a powerful reenactment of how the Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine came to be and later the beginning of the Shriners Hospitals for Children. This is something as a Noble you won’t want to miss. This summer we will have an 80’s rock and roll band, and later this summer the Amazing Race. CSSA will be in a favorite Branson, Mo., and the Fall Ceremonial will be combined with Isis Shrine Center. The Shriners’ Sportsman’s Event, Circus and Feztival of Trees will all be in the fall.

I would like to extend my sincerest grati-tude to Chief Aide Francis Chaplin and his Lady Sunni, for many things that would not be possible without their continued support. Noble Francis has forgone many personal opportunities to help the better-ment of Midian Shrine. His dedication and sacrifice are truly appreciated.

Terry Schrant, Director of Installation, as well as, Illustrious Sir Warren “Doc” Rensner and Illustrious Sir David Byerley for helping with the Installation of Unit/Club heads.

This year is off and running. What a great success the Launch Party was. Thank you to all of the officers who attended. We got things started off with a bang with a great Super Bowl Party put on by Trustees Ray Richecky, Dale Gibson and Steve Travis. We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the Oriental Band Valentine’s Steak Feed on February 10, and on the bus for the Barber County Co-ed Nut Fry on Saturday, February 17. The bus leaves Midian at 2:00 p.m. Contact Marshall Greg “Hurley” Stobart for reservations.

The Potentate’s Ball will be March 3 at the Doubletree Hilton Airport. We have a great band lined up: “Groove 42”. They will be playing today’s modern hits, as well as the classics, to keep you dancing all night long. The Potentate’s Cruise to Alaska, Sept. 8-15, has been a phenomenal success. Isis Shrine Center has partnered up with Midian, and so far we have 136 people signed up to go. There are a few spots still open. Please contact Cruise Coordinator Sunni Chaplin for reservations (620-583-0102). We are looking forward to spending some relaxing time with all of you who can join us.

Membership by DOUGH CHARTIER

Greetings, Nobles, Ladies, family and friends, and happy 2018! We are looking forward to a fun & exciting year!

The Membership Team is planning several membership events, not only in Wichita, but in the surrounding communities of Newton, Hutchinson, Winfield/Wellington/Ark City area, Eureka, etc.If schedules permit, we plan to continue with the Midian Shrine Degree Team, helping smaller and outlying lodges put on and finish their degree work when and where needed (we’ve already traveled to the West-Lewis & Coldwater areas to help the lodges in those communities with their degree work.) The membership and degree team members plan to visit and help more lodges in our district. If you’d like to help or brush up on your Blue Lodge Proficiency, ask us how you can help.

Due to illness, our first membership information night has been postponed, but we plan to reschedule for Tuesday, February 27, social 6-7 p.m., presentation at 7, with questions and answers to follow, followed by more social intercourse, Midian Shrine Oasis. Please mark your calendars, invite your friends, co-workers, relatives and any other prospects and significant others.

We are also excited to announce an open/coed fund-raiser dinner on Friday, April 6, in the Mecca Room, modeled after the Masonic Table Lodge. The Midian Officers will lead us in 7 rounds of toasts to the purposes and missions of Midian, the Oasis kitchen will prepare a nice meal for those in attendance, and will include the wine and novelty glass to take home from the dinner toasts. The dinner/round of toasts will be limited to 80, and RSVPs will be expected by or before Friday March 30th. Cost will be $40/couple or $25/individual.

I’ve created some passport and incentive programs for Nobles, new and not so new... please inquire if and when you bring a prospective member to an event, sponsor a new member, or refer a potential member to the Membership Team! Or put their information and data into the referral program on www.beashrinernow.com.

Membership! Membership!! Membership!!!If you know someone who is interested, even if they don’t know yet that

they’re interested, tell them about Midian Shriners and the fun, fellowship and philanthropy that we experience and contribute to.

We need your help to grow and prosper! Thanks for your help and support!

From the First LadyTRACY DANLERThank you for your continued support, enthusiasm, dedication and passion!Jay and I want to thank all of you for the support during the 2018 Election of Officers.

Each one of you gives us hope for the future of Midian. A team that works well together is more effec-

tive, more productive, and more successful than one person alone. Working effectively as a team creates momentum, improves morale and can even saves lives. Volunteering increases self-confidence. Doing good for others provides a sense of accomplishment. That is “Making a Difference!”

Jay and I appreciate all those who were able to attend the Public Installation and Launch Party. What a true honor it is to be here today. We also want to congratulate all of the incoming Unit/ Club members and board members. And for those football fans - kick off for the Super Bowl was no false start. A great time to be had.

As I am writing this article, the final preparations are underway for the Potentate’s Ball & Breakfast in March with many more events to come including:

• Valentine’s Steak Feed Feb 10th• Barber County Coed Nut Fry & Chicken Strip Feast Feb 17th Bus leaves from

Midian. Make sure you’re on it to catch the Excitement and Fun on the Run…• Potentate’s Ball @ The Double Tree Hilton March 3rd • St. Patrick’s Day Party March 17th• Easter Egg Hunt – will be a Midian Family Day this year. Not a public event! Now, as hard as it is to believe, there is still a lot of work to be done. Last year is not

a thing of the past - but a simple reminder of what lies ahead. As we wrap up 2017 and anticipate success and prosperity in the next, and we set our goals for the coming year – may we all commit to turning the corner. It will take all nobility and their ladies to support to growth of our Philanthropy.

Life is a challenge, meet it!

Here we are once again - Dodge City Shrine Club & Clown Unit. A new year 2018 ~ going to be a Super Wonderful Fantastic Year!

The ultimate source of a happy life is warm-heartedness. This means extending to others the kind of concern we have for ourselves. On a simple level we find that if we have a compassionate heart, we naturally have more friends. Scientists today are discovering that while anger and hatred eat into our immune system, warm - heartedness and compassion are good for our health. Many times people do NOT criticize you because they are evil; they criticize you because they have been trained to think that anyone who does NOT perceive and see things in the same manner as they see it is an enemy.

The Dodge City Shrine Club & Clown Unit had their first meeting for 2018. This meeting was held on Wednesday, January 10. This meeting was held at Casey’s Cowtown Club, 503 E. Trail St., Dodge City, KS (620) 227 – 5225. For the first meeting of 2018, there was truly one super turnout. Seems lately that everyone who is showing up and coming to the meetings is really having great fellowship with the others and the group is having a lot of fun, plus doing some real good out here in the western Kansas area. Plans were talked about for the circus coming in February 2018 which is just around the corner.

A couple of things I missed from December 2017 was that the new officers for the Club for 2018 were once again elected. Back in December we were honored to also have Illustrious Sir Rocky McWilliams and his First Lady Bev came out and visited with us on December 17. The Dodge City Shrine Club

did gave the outgoing Potentate what is called the “Dodge City

Fez” (10 gallon cowboy hat). President Noble Opie Astorga presented the Dodge City Fez to Potentate Rocky who

thanked the group for this fine gift. By the time that this comes out, the Dodge City Winter Expo will have come and gone. It was a great event from the January 19 through 21. The Shrine Club and Clowns had circus post-ers & tickets for the upcoming 2018 Shrine Circus in February. They were also signing up new members for the Shrine for 2018.

The 67th Shrine Circus will be coming once again in February 2018 to in Dodge City, Kansas. The Hamid Circus will be rolling into Dodge City and putting on another fantastic, exquisite, elegant, stunning circus. The circus will be held the weekend of Friday, the 23th, through Sunday, the 25th. This probably will be one of the most exciting circuses that you are going to see in your lifetime.

Just a reminder to put on your calendar for 2019: the annual Kansas Shrine Bowl will be held in Dodge City. This will be a great weekend in Dodge with the game being on June 8, 2019. Over the next coming months more information and facts about this super event will be published.

The DC Shrine Club will hold its February meeting on Wednesday, February 14. The meeting will be held at Central Station Bar & Grill: 207 E Wyatt Earp Blvd, Dodge City, KS 67801 (620) 225-1176. So please remember to put this on your calendar. Social time starts at 6:30 p.m. Dinner is at 7:00 p.m.

May all your days be circus days. Good night, America, wherever you are. God bless these United States of America!

Harper County JOSH KERRReporters

Greetings, fellow Nobles and Ladies; we hope everyone has had a great start to a new year.

Harper County started the new year out with their after-Christmas party on January 6.Thank you to Chad Tompkinson and Jim Ireland for preparing the meal, hands down the best prime rib we have ever had. A new award was given this year. Thank you to Lady Rachel Denton and Lady Andi Penwell for the time you put into making the Duncey Bucker Award and the entertainment, as we all reminisced on the bloopers of the year. The winning blooper of the year was when the gas pedal and brake switched places on the golf cart when a Noble was behind the wheel, causing him to attempt to make a drive thru at the building, leaving

him with a few stitches and years of jokes to come. Thank

you to Lynn Ungles and Lady Laurie for attending, and a big thank you to Lynn for being our liaison for 2017. We

appreciate everything you do and did.The club elected new officers for 2018

who were installed at the after-Christmas party. The new officers are as follows: President Josh Kerr, Vice-President Deon Howard, Treasurer Carson Denton, and Reporter Eric Mathes. We look forward to a new year and want to thank our past president Chad Tompkinson and Lady Kyla for the time and effort that they put into the past two years.

Here’s to a New Year and good things to come. Until next time!

Greenwood County CARL “C.F.” COXReporter

Our year has kicked off with our new officers being duly installed to their respective offices at the Public Installation on January 20th at the Scottish Rite. Let’s all get behind our new leadership and make 2018 another great year! Also, thanks to our outgoing Liaison Noble Mike Ward and Lady Julie for keep-ing us informed last year. You are always welcome over here in Greenwood County.

At our January meeting we got the final report of our Grab-a-Slab rib sales. This again has proven to be an excellent fund raiser for us. Plans are already in the works to do it again this fall. The bike storage was also discussed with a few alternatives for storage looked into. Nothing decided yet, but the committee is looking at options of possibly renting space or building a storage building on the property with Fidelity Lodge.

Central States Motor Corps is holding the

Mid-Winter meeting in Wichita this year. The 3-Wheelers will be

cooking our world-famous Greenwood County steaks for the Motor Corps banquet. This also falls right before we

do it all again for the Spring Pre-Glow so we will be well practiced at cooking steaks this spring. This is going to be a big commitment for our club and we will need lots of help! Mark your calendar now for April 28 and watch your email and upcoming Topics for more details as it gets closer.

Last, but certainly not least, we have some bragging to do! Our 2017 Captain Noble Steve Richard accepted the Scimitar Award for the 3-Wheelers at the 2017 Awards Banquet. To put the icing on the cake, not only did we get the award, we had the highest point total of any club in Midian! Thanks to everyone for your work in 2017 to make this possible, now let’s do it again in 2018!

Butler County ARV KRUMINSReporter

BCSC is off and running for 2018 and should have had their first meeting of the year on January 24 and a social on January 26 at Playa Azul. The fun at Midian continues with a big football game on the 4th of February and a Valentine’s celebration with steak on the 10th.

The black camel has taken Noble Doug Cauthron. Our condolences go out to Lady Norma and family. I considered Doug to be a quiet and smart guy. When you got him talking about a fun subject, you could see his

eyes light up. He was support-ing BCSC when I joined many a

year ago and was always thoughtful in any discussions. The club will have to adapt and carry on.

On a happy note, Noble A.W. McVay and Lady Helen celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on January 16th. I, for one, think this is wonderful and wish them many more.

Our next meeting is February 28 at 7:00 p.m. at Midian, and the social is still to be determined. See you all there.

Well it’s a New Year, and I hope we can start off our report better than we ended our 2017, since our January ar-ticle did not make it into the Topics. Our outgoing president, Noble Jim Groff, was presented the Scimitar Award for all the hard work by everyone in 2017. Noble Jim and Lady Judy are to be commended for everything they accomplished this past year in the leadership role for keeping the unit together. The gavel was passed from Noble Jim to our new president for 2018, Noble Rodney Ott, at our 1st meeting held Wednesday, January 10. Good luck to Noble Rod. Noble Cliff Premer, Secretary, is to be commended for his award for Circus Banner Sales.

The circus this year is October 5, 6 and 7, and will be held at Hartman Arena. There

are no parades listed as yet so it is time to get our cars polished

and ready to go.Midian Shrine Launch party was

Saturday, January 27, at 8:00 a.m. All Nobles and Ladies were invited to attend

this important seminar to kick off 2018. This seminar was well worth everyone’s time, as a lot of good information was presented.

Please keep both Lady Feryl and Lady Janet in your thoughts and prayers.

Are you interested in Classic cars? Come join the fun with the Midian Classics. We meet on the 2nd Wednesday of each month in the Pyramid Room at 7:00 p.m. If you are interested in finding out more about the Classics, contact Noble Bob Giesen at 316-641-0375, or stop by during one of our meetings.

Ending 2017 and starting 2018, we brought in two new Nobles, Thomas Bowen II and William (Bill) Sykes. We had an awesome Christmas parade; thanks to everyone who attended and came to hospitality afterward.

This year’s officers will be President Nate Nelzen, 1st Vice President Jeff Geesling, 2nd Vice President Rod Armstrong, Secretary / Treasurer Glenn Davis, and Chaplin Robert Hannigan. Our goal for this year is to build our image in the community by getting more active in our community. We made up six

food boxes for families, filled with everything for Christmas

dinner, including a turkey. After a call to Sandy Woodson, Executive Director of the Cancer Council of Reno County,

three families of cancer patients were selected, based upon the families’ financial need. They serve families throughout Reno County. Three other families were helped through InterFaith Housing and three turkeys were given to Open Door Pregnancy.

To help these families through the holidays was a joy for us. More to come!

Greetings, fellow Nobles and Ladies. Hope all is well and you had a Merry Christmas with family and friends.

Barber County had a regular meeting on January 2. Liaison Mark Butterfield called in on speaker phone and got us caught up on current events.

The Unit’s Annual Nut Fry will be on Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Kiowa Community building, with pre glow at 5 p.m. and food served at 6 p.m. The public is welcome, with the exception of minors. Prices are $30.00

all!!! For more information about the bus ride from Wichita down to Kiowa and back, call a Divan member or check out the ads in the Topics, on Facebook, and in the Shrine Information Post. Hope to see ya! Remember, don’t let your fezz get fuzzy. Recruit and be happy!

Million Dollar BandWhen any of our groups

play some place other than Midian Temple, the Million Dollar Band moves a bunch of equipment. For that Concert Band which plays for the Circus, for Ceremonial, for Installation and some non-Shrine concerts, it’s quite a list: tympani drums, bass drum, snare drum, orchestral bells, incidental percussion equipment, two metal racks with metal music stands, boxes of music, a conductor’s podium, etc. The Dancekatz get away with letting the drummer move his own set, but there are still the fronts and other music stands, and the large plastic tub full of music. The Dixiekatz move music and music stands in. The Polkatz are a little different. Noble Steve Schmitter has us trained to bring our own stands and music individually.

Some gigs require that we carry sound equipment also. We get our exercise.

I’m writing about this because the activities the Million Dollar Band is fo-cused on for January both happen after the deadline of this Topics article. On January 20 the Concert Band, under the direction

of Dr. Lynn Moller, will play for Midian’s Installation.

One week later the Million Dollar Band will hold our annual banquet at which our band officers will be

installed. By the time you read this, the

band will be pretty well settled into its groove, holding rehearsals on a regular basis. The Concert Band rehearses at 7 p.m. on Mondays (unless Midian is closed for a holiday); the Dixiekatz rehearse at 8:30 on the first and third Mondays; the Dancekatz rehearse at 8:30 on the second and fourth Mondays. The Polkatz rehearse on the first and third Tuesdays.

Playing music is fun, the kind of fun Shriners do well. For some of our gigs for people other than Shriners and Masons, we are remunerated a little. That goes into our treasury to buy what we need to play and to forward on to The Shriners Hospitals for Children and the Plane of Mercy. Dig out the instrument and join us!

ChefsContrary to the rumors and

stories going around, the Chefs will not be cooking for the Super Bowl party. We will, however, cook up some chili and enter the chili cook off contest. We will meet at the Town and Country Restaurant (Kellogg and I-235) Saturday morning February 3 for breakfast and to discuss the recipe. Breakfast will be at 7:31

a.m.; remember Noble Bob Herrman still cannot get there at

7:30, so it has to be 7:31. After breakfast we will proceed to

cook the chili and set it to marinate and enrich its flavors all day. This will also

serve as our February meeting, as our normal date falls on Valentine’s Day.

December 16 found us all at Rolling Hills Country Club for our annual Christmas Party. All were dressed in our Class A attire with our lovely Ladies in their festive attire for the season. The room was packed to the outer walls of the banquet room, which made socializing challenging, but we all managed to have a great time.

Captain John Auch P.P. presented our annual awards. Micky West received Motor Patrolman of the Year, Moe Thompson re-ceived Rookie of the Year, Paul Mayfield got Best Participation, Terry Henry got an Indy 500 award, (driving faster than one should to make a left-hand turn), I got a 100 Point Jeepster, and Julie Auch and Donna Unrein received the Compassion Award. The most highly contested award was left for last, the Horse’s Ass Award. Both Ron Capps P.P. and Jeff Breault P.C. have diligently been chal-lenging each other for the honor of this award all year. Though the final tally was close, Jeff Breault came out on top. If we ever find the original trophy, we will add Jeff’s name; however Jeff did receive his own personal award to remind him persistence pays off!

Fred Smith HPP and our Liaison in-stalled the 2018 officers. Terry Henry, Captain; Paul Mayfield, Adjutant; Lynn Ungles, 1st Lieutenant; and Sec./Treasurer, Moe Thompson; 2nd Lieutenant, Bob Ragsdale; Sergeant of Arms, Mickey West, Quartermaster, and John Auch as Rajah.

Stated Meeting in December is the time we ask everyone that can to give at least $100.00 each to the Plane of Mercy. This year we will have given, once everyone’s check gets turned in, a total of around $4,300.00. Thank you to all that participated.

We held our January meeting at the Candle Club. It was well-

attended, and we were lucky enough to have Jim McNerney P.P. in attendance. Jim and his Lady Allison were also at the Christmas Party. It is great to see you more active, Jim.

Captain Terry Henry led a well-organized meeting and outlined a few plans and new ideas for the year. We bid our Liaison, Fred Smith HPP, a fond farewell as our Liaison and wished him luck in his new duties.

The Midian Shrine Awards Banquet for all Circus, Membership, and Special Recognition awards was on January 5. We were lucky to have several of our Motor Patrolmen receive Circus Awards for $1000.00 to $5,000.00 in sales. Our top salesman was Horst Hiller with $5000.00, 2nd was Cy Lampe with $4,800.00, and 3rd was Terry Henry at $4,600.00, and several in the $3,000.00 down to $1,000.00 categories. Congratulations, all. We were also active enough to receive the Scimitar Award and a Membership Award. Great work to all those that contributed, especially to member-ship. Keep up the momentum!

The circus is coming! Sooner than we will know. Sell, Sell, Sell!

We are planning another Spring Bash in April, so get ready for some fun! Another big event on April 26th through April 28th is the Central States Association of Shrine Motor Corp. meetings and banquet which will be held in Wichita. I will be brought in as President this year and we will have a banquet which will be at Midian on April 28th. Greenwood County Shrine Club and Three Wheelers will be doing a steak feed for the meal. Plan on attending. We will get out more details on all the upcoming activities soon.

Misfits YUKON CORNELIUS Reporter

Congratulations, Misfits, on coming home with a Scimitar award for 2017! We can be proud of the fact that we are one of the very few units in Midian that has won a Scimitar award every year since becoming an official unit!! Way to go! But seriously, a great idea for a unit that was born out of a need to increase participation and membership. Along with the support of the Divan and especially, the nobility, the Misfits are off to a fantastic start! THANK YOU!

Here are a few things that were decided at the December meeting that we think should be passed along:

The Misfits have decided that in the best interests of the unit, we will be meeting EVERY month instead of bimonthly. This way everyone will be up to date on events, ideas, and overall health of the unit. We will meet the 4th Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. in the Midian meeting rooms.

Dues will be extended to June 2018, and our yearly dues cycle will be in the middle of the calendar year, instead of EVERYTHING being due in December, along with Christmas and other year end payments, it is easy to become “dues broke.” All current members owe nothing until June 1st.

FUNDRAISER/SOCIAL, First Annual Hog Roast Saturday March 24th, 2018 at 9017 Tobacco Rd., Hutchinson, Kansas. ADVANCE TICKETS are $20 per per-son, $25 at the gate. Ticket includes Meal, BOTTOMLESS CAMELS MILK, (while supplies last) Hayrack Rides and Bonfire!! Cash bar will be available, along with the Caboose and bar for the members. OPEN TO ALL NOBLES, LADIES AND GUESTS! See a Misfits member for tickets!

December was a very emotional time for one unit in Midian, The Harvey County Hobos. December 18 was the unit’s Christmas social and their final meeting. Even tougher was that December 18, 1968, was when the official bylaws were signed, 49 years to the day! Those that attended shared stories from the years past, members who have stood out

in the unit, and even a few songs that were sung by all, which had

almost everyone in tears as the final gavel struck the podium.

The Hobo caboose has had many nobles visit her at parade routes over the

years as she was the cornerstone of the unit. Well, now a member of the Misfits owns the caboose and will parade her as a Misfit when-ever possible. The integrity of the caboose will not change; in fact, she is slowly starting to be restored, along with electrical upgrades. The importance of this is not the caboose herself, but the history of brotherhood, the thousands of nobles who have stepped inside and ridden on top. That is why it was decided and recorded in the last official minutes of the Harvey County Hobos, that EVERY member of the Hobos is automatically a Lifetime Associate Member of the Misfits. The Hobos will forever live on.

Greetings Nobles, Ladies, friends and family: the Director’s Staff wishes one and all a Happy New Year and continued blessings in 2018! We want to thank those who helped and sup-ported the New Year’s Eve Party at Midian Shrine Center and helped us raise proceeds for Imperial Installation in 2019!

The Director’s Staff is ramping up the preparations and planning for Spring Ceremonial, and we look forward to that event, and as always we ask for any who

are interested in helping, it is not too late to learn a part of the initiation if you

are already a member of Director’s Staff or wish to be, contact member and inquire what is required.

We are starting to plan our social calendar and events. We will have our annual steak feed and unit auction and social this summer, the wienie roast this fall, and our holiday social and plan to repeat our NYE party!

Keep having fun and helping children!

Out with the old and in with the new. Hold onto your hats because 2018, here we go! With our brand new 2018 Midian Shrine Keystone Kop Board duly installed, we can officially start a new beginning in the adventures of the Koppers. What will the new year bring, you ask? At this point in time, I say just hang on and see what happens, but it will be a fresh new start. We will see what our new Chief Gabe Keplar has in store for us, what he can get us into, and even what he can get us out of. Good luck there, 2018 Chief!

I said out with the old and in with the new, and we even had a party to do just that. Thanks, Darrin Cox and Lady Tina, for hosting a garage party to do it up right in. The food was great, the libations were sharp, and the wagering was low-keyed, as you never know when your garage may be wire tapped! Boy, them Koppers and Koppettes love their deviled eggs. I don’t know how many were served, but they were gone about as quick as they were uncovered. Plenty of good stuff to eat besides them though, as the chefs of our group piled it on with perfect garage party fare! There was plenty of talk of fishing, cars, spring, mid-winter meetings, and just about every subject you wanted to talk about. The picture below is not for the faint of heart, but it happened at this party. Please, please ABA Kops don’t try this at home but if you do make sure you have plenty of adult supervision on

hand. It may look easy but we are afraid you will choke! It was a great

party and a great way to start our 2018 adventures. Speaking of which, another new adventure is coming soon. Yes,

another rendition of the CSSA Keystone Kops Mid-Winter meeting is coming up this month up in Kansas City. That is always an adventure. More adventuresome for some than others, but it tends to be a little on the crazy side for all. Stay tuned to the Topics for further news.

Our annual Keystone Kop fishing trip to Shell Knob is gearing up already even though it doesn’t happen until April. The head count looks to be about the same, although it looks like some new faces may appear. It is a ways off so changes will happen, I am sure. Questions abound: will the Ned rig work this year, will Doc Jon and Scotty boat a fish of any kind or size, will we get 6 inches of rain again, will the Rooster show up, who will win the golf scramble? That and plenty more will be answered soon! Get you a boat and a partner and come on along.

I Wonder?? Did Hurley get appointed again?? I Wonder?? Did one of Coxy’s reindeer get Moon’s ear muffs?? I Wonder?? Can you do that on a moving bus headed for Colorado?? I Wonder?? Can Gabe hang on and get a Gold Whistle?? I Wonder?? How close is spring?? I Wonder??

Electraglide EliteHello, 2018! Already we are

well into the new year and most of us are still using 2017 as the calendar year. Bikes are now resting comfort-ably in the garage, covered with a dust cover and plugged into the charger waiting for the first good riding day or a chance to add more chrome. It won’t be long before we hear the engines start and the exhaust of a well-tuned Harley will fill the spring air.

First, we want to congratulate Potentate Jay Danler and First Lady Tracy as our newly installed Illustrious Sir Potentate and First Lady at Midian. Jay has been a member of Electraglide Elite for several years, and we are thrilled to have one of our own as Potentate. Equally proud that Norm Conley, long time member of EE, is now Chief Rabban, accompanied by Lady Debra.

We also have a new EE Captain as well! Our new Captain Galen “Grizz” Frick will be on the lead cycle when we parade, as well as leading our monthly meetings along with Lady Rose. Past Captain Robert and Lady Janice will now step aside from a leadership role to an active role assisting

Capt. Grizz as he settles into his Captain’s position. Along

with our new Captain Grizz, our offi-cers for 2018-2019 are 1st Lieutenant and Secretary Dwight Harris, and

PP Dave Byerley as Treasurer. Our membership wishes all the best to each of our new officers in the EE and at Midian. We are pleased Liaison Officer Marshall Gary ‘JR’ Gelvin had such a great time with us the past two years. He has stated his intention of joining our group as an associate member.

While we speak of membership, dues can be paid after January 1st. Our Treasurer Dave is accepting dues anytime and we need to update our insurance information by getting your insurance on record at the office. Just bring in your insurance card and have the people at Midian’s main desk copy it and they will present you with a new parade permit. You get all that accomplished, it will be time to ride.

We say goodbye to 2017 and welcome 2018 and challenge the year to be our best yet. Our goal will be no accidents, so do your part and watch out for people driving, texting, and being otherwise distracted.

Happy New Year, and welcome to another year in Antique Autos. We hope that last year was a good year for you all. It went by pretty darn quickly and we probably didn’t get everything done we wanted to.

Well, we got new officers elected and sworn in. Noble Dahl Carmichael has been re-elected to the esteemed office of Captain. Thank God, we still have Noble Mark as secretary. He’s the greatest. Our hard working lieutenant Noble Randy Edwards is coming back as a hard working lieutenant.

We had a great Christmas party at the Candle Club in December. Nearly everybody in the unit showed up, along

Noble Larry Light was named Antique Auto member of the year for 2017. He received a 1st place award for his Chevy truck at CSSA in Kansas City. He comes to all the meetings and is a relatively new member of the unit. Congratulations to Noble Larry!

2018 Sportsmen’s EventThe 2018 Sportsmen’s Event is set

for August 4 at the Cessna Activity Center. This year we are hoping to spice up the event with some new prizes, such as fishing trips, trolling motors, etc. The thinking is to bring more of the fishing enthusiasts to the event.

The kick-off meeting will be February 19

at 6:30 p.m. in the Divan Room. Unless there is a conflict, all meetings will be on the 3rd Monday. If you have ideas for improving the event, or want to be

FRATERNAL SERVICE

2017 SILENT MESSENGER AWARDS

There is a saying, “It is easy to sit up and take notice.” This is true. What is difficult, though, is to stand up and take action. This year Midian awarded two Silent Messenger awards to Nobles who stood up and took action in 2017.

These two Nobles demonstrated the three main elements that lead to success. One is enthusiasm, two is commitment, and the third one is hard work. It takes enthusiasm to set fire to the imagination. It’s that enthusiasm that made these Nobles ask themselves, “What if?” and “What would it do for Midian if I did this?”

Next they committed themselves to do the work necessary to make things happen. These two nobles this year are Noble Bob Herrman and Noble “Big Al” Allen Ceynar.

Nobles, Midian thanks for stepping up, taking action, and making things happen. Congratulations!

2017 SHRINER OF THE YEAR

Every year Midian Shrine recognizes one Shriner who has consistently gone above and beyond the call of duty by naming him the Shriner of the Year. Though every Midian Shriner gives 100%, one of the reasons we’ve had such a great year, this Noble has a habit of giving 150%!

This year’s Shriner of the Year is a man I’ve observed and admired over the years. The manner in which he treats and interacts with people is above reproach. He takes on responsibility with a smile and a positive “Can do” and “Let’s get it done” attitude. The year 2017 has not been a kind or easy year for him, but through all the hardship, this Noble has remained positive, focused, and has always given his best.

I know many Midian Shriners consider him not only a brother, but a true friend and mentor. He was raised a Master Mason on June 9, 1973, in the Mt. Moriah Lodge #179 at Kinsley, Kansas. He received his 32° at the Wichita Consistory in October of 1973. He became a Midian Shriner on November 6, 1973. Due to consolidation, he is currently a member of the St. Bernard Lodge #222, Dodge City Kansas, since 1991. It is an honor and privilege to recognize the 2017 Shriner of the Year, Noble Kyle McKillip Rhorer.

----Nobles and Ladies, the next time you see any of these winners around Midian, please stop and

congratulate them for a job well done. They all stepped up and committed themselves to the well-being and benefit of Midian Shrine in 2017.

2018 TRUSTEES - MIDIAN SHRINE

Noble Wayne Wells, PP, elected Recorder at the Annual Meeting January 17, 2018Wayne Wells was born on February 9, 1957, and raised in Wichita, Kansas. He graduated from Wichita High School North in 1975. He is the youngest

of 6 children, having 3 sisters & 2 brothers. Wayne’s Masonic influence came after he married into a family with the Masonic background and was introduced to a couple of friends that were already

members of the Blue Lodge & Midian Shrine. Wayne is a member of Albert Pike Lodge #303, but was originally raised as a Master Mason in Sunflower Lodge #86 in November of 1984. He also became a member of Wichita Scottish Rite and went into Midian Shrine in November 1984.

Wayne thought about joining a couple of units, but the Oriental Band tweaked his interest just a bit. Why would grown-up men wear all that makeup and jewelry? In May 1985 Wayne joined the Oriental Band and now it is in his blood. Wayne was Director of Midian Oriental Band in 1995 and 1996. He started off playing cymbals, since he couldn’t get any sound out of the musette. He then switched to the bass drum. This was a scary move because Wayne has no rhythm.

Wayne was fortunate enough to serve as the International President of the Association of Shrine Oriental Bands in 2007-2008. Wayne is also a member of the Midian Chefs, Midian Nomads, a charter member of the Midian Nascarts, and an honorary member of the Arab Patrol. He also is a member of North Star Chapter #483 Order of the Eastern Star. Wayne has had the honor of serving on Midian’s appointed Divan as Captain of the Guard for Illustrious Sir Roger G. Snellen in 2000, as 1st Ceremonial Master for Illustrious Sir David A. Schopf in 2003 and 1st Ceremonial Master for Illustrious Richard Schopf in 2010. On January 18, 2012 Wayne was elected Oriental Guide and the journey began. Wayne served diligently as Potentate for Midian in 2015.

Wayne met his wife Terri in the fall of 1976. It was love at first sight and they were married on December 19, 1976. They enjoy their 9 nieces, 5 nephews, 7 great-nieces, 9 great- nephews, and lots and lots of friends. Wayne was employed by Missouri Beef Packers (MBPXL) for 13 years until 1988 when the company moved away from Wichita. He then enjoyed working at American Fun Food (a food & food supplies distributor) for 5 years and then tried out

the construction industry for 3 years. In September 1996 he started working at Midwest Plastics Supply, Inc. (an industrial plastics distributor for the aircraft industry). He has been there for over 21 years. He works there with Terri, who has been employed by Midwest Plastics for over 33 years. In their spare time, they enjoy collecting antique glassware, shot glasses, railroad china and paraphernalia, and of course, don’t forget Terri’s teddy bears. Both Wayne and Terri are big fans of professional football and Nascar, so they are season ticket holders for the Kansas City Chiefs and also Kansas Speedway Racetrack.

A big thank you extends to their families, who have helped and supported them along the way, and a special thank you to the owners of Midwest Plastics Supply, Skip and Vicki Smith. They have been extremely supportive, and without their patience and understanding, we would not be able to be as active in the philanthropy we love.

Noble Mark Butterfield elected Oriental Guide at the Annual Meeting January 17, 2018.Born and reared as a fourth generation Derby resident, Mark also lived in Overland Park and Hutchinson during his formative years. He graduated

from Hutchinson High School before attending Wichita State University, studying business, and later Oklahoma State University, ultimately earning a degree in Municipal Fire Protection. Mark retired from active firefighting while Chief of Training at the Branson, Missouri, fire department after serving over 20 years in several capacities there, as well as the Derby Volunteer Fire Department and Boeing Military Airplane Company Fire Department in Wichita. Subsequently he returned to Stillwater, Oklahoma, for 10 years when hired by OSU as the manager of the Firefighter Professional Skills Training Center and part-time instructor before being promoted to statewide Coordinator of Firefighter Training and Certification at O. S. U. Fire Service Training. In that role he supervised 6 full-time and over 75 part-time instructors, covering the state of Oklahoma. He came back home to Kansas as a Fire Science instructor at Hutchinson Community College before leaving there in 2013, allowing him to become active at Midian once again.

In 1976, Mark was raised as a Master Mason in Derby Lodge #365 with his dad and both grandfathers, Past Masters all, each presiding as Master during one of his three degrees. There he was serving as Senior Steward before moving out of the area. Mark joined Wichita Scottish Rite and Midian Shrine in the fall of 1990, becoming a third generation Shriner. He was a member of the Air Capital Eagles before moving away. After resuming his active participation at Midian in 2014, he joined the Directors Staff, being elected vice president in 2015 & 2016, and president in 2017 & 2018. He was appointed to the Divan in 2017 as the Captain of the Guard. His youngest son Brett became a fourth generation Shriner, joining Midian in the spring of 2007, just before graduating and commissioning from the United States Naval Academy that same month.

Mark was elected Mayor of the City of Derby from 1987-1991, after serving 3 years on the city council. In that capacity he was appointed to The Wichita/Sedgwick County Partnership for Growth (WI/SE), Inc. Board of Directors; The Wichita State University Local Government Advisory Board; The League of Kansas Municipalities Finance and Taxation Committee; and was elected Chairman of the Association for Legislative Action of Rural Mayors.

Mark’s administration is credited with laying much of the underpinning and groundwork for present-day Derby’s dynamic and phenomenal growth by hiring the first professional City Manager for Derby, bringing planning and engineering in-house, making tough decisions improving and expanding infrastructure, updating long outdated planning and zoning regulations, streamlining processes, and for the first time ever providing training and professional development for the Planning Commission, City Council and himself. He oversaw a nearly $9 million annual budget. He fostered a synergistic approach by bringing all stake-holders to the table in community decisions. Mark was described by Joe P. Pisciotte (PA-SHA-ta), professor at WSU Hugo Wall Center for Urban Studies, as a visionary proactive principled leader with the passion, gumption, back-bone (actually he said other anatomically correct body parts), courage and integrity to make the tough decisions that get results. Mark was known by his fellow WI/SE board members, the likes of Tim Wittsman, Lionel Alford and Russ Meyer, as an even-tempered and level headed inquisitive board member who was studiously observing, absorbing and learning until the time he felt qualified to take a participatory and active leadership role in the decision making process. He has earned a reputation for doing his homework and research and coming prepared to rationally debate his opinion without pulling any punches at any meeting he was participating in or leading. Mark has a history of rapidly being promoted and rising to the top echelon and being recognized as a leader, be it in his profession of the fire service, city government or here at Midian.

Today he is mostly retired, allowing him the freedom and time to more than adequately perform the duties as an elected Divan member. He operates his own fire service training, equipment sales and administration consulting business. He also remains a technical expert for International Fire Service Training Association, the world’s largest publisher of training materials for the fire service based out of Oklahoma State University. When available, he works as needed as a funeral assistant for Elliott Mortuary in Hutchinson. He sits on the board of directors for the Crime Stoppers of Reno County and is very proud to serve as a Blue & Gold Officer for the United States Naval Academy. Fishing is his favorite pastime, and he enjoys and formerly conducted storm chasing tours way back before it was cool and too dangerously congested. Mark has two sons, Justin (wife Stacy and son Blake) a Business Analyst for Black & Veatch Global Engineering in Overland Park, Kansas, and LCDR (Lieutenant Commander) Brett (wife Andrea and sons James and William) a U. S. Navy pilot currently based in San Diego, California. On January 2, 2016, he married Cynda Wright, a financial advisor and Director of Investments for Oppenheimer & Co. in Hutchinson where they reside. Fred Shank at Avenue Style cuts his hair.
