From the PotentateIll. Sir Bret Stahler

What an incredible start to 2018! To stand before the Nobility of Antioch and take the Oath of Office and realize that I am one of only 197 Shrine Masons in the world to be a sitting Potentate! That is an amazing honor for me to receive from YOU! With Shriners International now having Centers not only in the United States, Canada and Mexico but also in Germany and the Philippines and South America and who knows where it will be next? This shows that the need and interest is there and we will survive and grow! I am very proud! Along with most of your 2018 Divan, Susan and I had the pleasure to attend Syrian Shrine’s Installation and witness Illustrious Sir Greg Pelfrey take his oath and the next day I traveled alone to Moslem Shrine in Detroit to see

Illustrious Sir Bob O’Brien be installed as well. Both events were impressive and fun filled. I was watched over by the Great Architect on my travels back home from Detroit, when a drunk driver who was driving without headlights, rammed my car at 70 plus miles an hour in a snowstorm. He was not hurt and I only have some aches and pains but it certainly made for an exciting evening. Talk about excitement, the OG Roast was outstanding!! After a stunning and beautiful cocktail party in the basement and fantastic meal in the dining room, everyone returned to the Ballroom. This time there were two new Divan members in the barrel. Your new High Priest and Prophet, Scott Fitzgerald, wasn’t Roasted…he was TOASTED!! With the assistance of the Funsters (should I say more?) poor Scott didn’t know where any of this stuff came from. There was also some help from family members with cream pies, an old clown favorite! Next out of the shoot was the new waterboy, your new Oriental Guide, Kendall Lawson. He strutted out a bit cocky but the Bobbies Unit was ready for this! Just so they could present him with his new oversized ‘Blue Tooth’ device, they brought out a very tall ladder. This is because Kendall is something close to 9 feet tall! Photos were discovered from some secret archives and projected on the screen that our Chaplain Rev. Matt McFarland explained and sometimes apologized for. Before it was all over, Kendall was wearing a diaper! But wait, that ain’t all of

it. Next time you see him, ask him how much it cost him to buy his tie back as auctioneers, Mick Lile and Illustrious Sir Bob Deem auctioned it off! A great amount of money was donated to the Sneaker Fund for Burns Research. The Bobbies Comedy night was a great time and the head liners really had the audience enjoying themselves. Great job Bobbies! You guys and gals really know how to put on an evening. And now, the Back To the Beach party. What a turn out! Exotic and fun beach food and great decorations were just the warm up to some of the most outrageous fun games you ever played with snow on the ground and sand on your mind! The teams were less than even which made it that much more hilarious and the laughter was louder than ever! If you weren’t there you missed a great one! This is going to be a year of great fun! We are going to do our best to provide you with memorable events but you won’t remember them if you don’t come!!

Together We Can Make Magic Happen!

PROVOSTGUARD

By Noble Tom Hail

The Provost Guard is looking forward to another awesome year of working the Shrine Circus, the parades and at any event our Potentate requests our services. As excited as we are in looking forward to 2018, we reflect on a great loss we experienced. It was the passing of our Honorary Provost Guard Tom Schoff. He was a retired peace officer who proudly served the community as an Ohio State Patrol Lieutenant and a Champaign County Deputy Sheriff. At the annual Provost Family Picnic in 2011, we had a brief ceremony installing PP Tom as an honorary member. He was so excited and kept going, “All righty then, I have another badge”! He was a wonderful addition to our Provost family and we all will miss his wit and laughter very much. It was a great honor for the Provost to be asked to assist in standing guard at Tom’s memorial and viewing. We keep his Lady Collette in our thoughts and prayers. Provost will gather on Wednesday, February 7th at the Rib House in Vandalia to go over Shrine Circus updates and assignments for February 9, 10 and 11.

PIPES ANDDRUMSBy Noble Everett Bailey, Director Here it is , Circus time already. The years just seem to fly by anymore! I no longer look at the dates on the calendar. Instead, I just live from one event to another. The Pipes and Drums will be taking tickets again this year for all the shows. This is always a lot of fun. I always love seeing the children’s smiling faces! By the time you read this we will have celebrated Robert Burns’s ( 25 January 1759- 21 July 1796) Birthday. He is widely known as the national poet of Scotland. In addition to poetry he also wrote the lyrics to many of the tunes of the day. One of his most familiar tunes is Auld Lang Syne. Almost everyone has either heard it or sung it on New Years. As always the band practices on Wednesday nights at 7pm. Come and join us, the first beer is on me.

ANTIOCHGUN CLUBBy Noble Tom Hail Remember, we have Attorney Joseph Stadnicar, Criminal Defense Attorney at the Antioch meeting next month on Wednesday, March 21. We will have our Annie Oakleys serve us up some pulled-pork sandwiches and homemade sides starting at 6:30pm, then suspend the regular meeting for-malities and have Attorney Stadnicar begin his presentation at 7:00pm. This presentation is OPEN TO ALL Shrine Nobles and their Ladies along with our Gun Club members. It will give all those in attendance an opportunity to ask “legal” questions on different gun-related topics. We meet this month on Wednes-day, February 21st at 7:00pm at Vandalia Range & Armory. Be sure to bring a knife from your collection or a hand gun or long gun to share their history with fellow Gun Club members and their Annie Oakleys during “Show & Tell”.

ParadeEscortBy Noble Michael Hayslip, Secretary It’s been a couple months since the Parade Escort has been in the Crier. So, allow me to catch you up on what’s been happening. We ordered new windbreaker jackets for new members or for those who needed them, I’m sure you will see me wearing mine this spring at the Miamisburg Parade! The Children’s Parade in downtown Dayton, we had a member of another unit ride his Honda Goldwing with us since he was the only one from his unit to attend the parade. (His name escapes me, you know who you are!) He did a great job and his bike was festively decorated with lights. In the off-season, Noble Stephen-Paul Yelland will be refurbishing our flag poles so they will all look great for the 2018 parade season. Until then, see you at the Circus!

PHOTOUNITBy Noble Bruce E. Puff, Scribe What a start to the New Year, 2018. January, with the Installation of Elected Officers, We, the Nobility, gave Our Hails and Farewells to Ill. Sir Wes and Lady Johanna Ramsey. “Thank You” both for a great 2017 year, and then started to Clown ‘Round with Ill. Sir Bret and Lady Susan Stahler. So many Red Sneakers, and Welcome to the new Divan members. 1,500 photos later, a short time in the Photo Units Dark Room, processing the digital film, charged the batteries, one of our photogs caught a seagull, no pigeons, at the Beach Blanket Party, to air mail, our postcards to the Crier. There was a little sand with the film, but, we did photograph some beached whales and even a few mermaids. The next big event, will be Antioch’s Circus. Last year, uur Unit shot 6,000 pictures, that came out to a couple hundred rolls of film. See you all, Center Ring, smiling, laughing with the elephants, and clowning around.

Circus Info To be a Circus Daddy – you need to have returned you coupons with at least a $40 payment by February 5, 2018. Payments received after that date will count toward Merit Award points, but your name will not be in the Crier as a Circus Daddy. In order to receive Merit Award Points for the Circus, you must pay for at least one book ($40) of Circus Noble Coupons. You receive 1 point for every dollar spent on Noble Coupons. Remember you will not receive any points for working at the Circus or for Stated Meetings and Parades unless you have done this. Points for working at the Circus is determined by the Team leader of the various job stations turning in your Name, Member number and Performances you worked. Please make sure you have your Member number to give them, so you can receive credit. We do not give points based on the sign in sheet. Only the sheets turned in by Team leaders. Please remember that everyone that is working needs to sign in at the Noble Entrance door and then proceed to your job station. Ladies we encourage you to work, sign in at the door, then at the job station with your significant other’s Member number. There are at least 60 usher positions that need to be filled for each performance as well as many other areas that may need workers. Please contact the Circus Chairman, Kevin Sweeney, if you want to help. He will get you in contact with the right person to see when you arrive at the Circus. DO NOT JUST SIGN IN AND COME TO SEE THE SHOW FROM THE OASIS!!! The Oasis is for workers. Do not come in the Noble entrance or ramp in the back if you are not working. If you are not working, please have a ticket to enter the building. If you do not work, you may visit the Oasis during intermission and after each show. We do not want everyone’s kids there. It is better for your family to be in the arena to view the show. In order for us to make a profit, we have to have people buy tickets. Plus we receive $1.00 from UD for every ticket scanned. How It All Began…Hillbilly Days was first founded in 1977 by a group of Shriners as a means to raise money for the Shriner’s Hospital for Children. Two Shriners from Hillbilly Clan Outhouse No. 2, Howard “Dirty Ear” Stratton and “Shady” Grady Kinney, decided to start the festival

in 1976 after visiting a festival in Portsmouth, Ohio. They got a group of Shriners together and they began the festival in 1977. It has continued ever since. In 2011 this festival was able to raise $72,000 for the Shriner’s Hospital. Over 100,000 people come once a year to experience the event and culture of Appalachia. Participants wear overalls and other rural attire while roaming the streets of Pikeville to help raise money for a cause.

See your own Wright Flyer Clan #91, Rabban of the Clan if you are even slightly interested in attending. Hotel rooms have been reserved.

Fun for the whole family!

News from Cincinnati

SHC-CIN_Media Resources.Feb._2018

Shriners Hospitals for Children®–Cincinnati is one of only four freestanding hospitals in the country dedicated to the treatment of pediatric burns and specializing in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Our physicians’ experience and expertise in pediatric burn treatment, cleft lip and palate, complex wound and skin conditions, and plastic and reconstructive surgery makes Shriners Hospitals for Children – Cincinnati a first choice for care.

If you know a child we can help, go to shrinershospitalcincinnati.org or call:

50 Years of Transporting Patients to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Cincinnati

Shriners Play a Big Role in ReferralsWhen it comes to finding medical help for children, Shriners are now more important than ever. Members of the fraternity have always played a critical role in helping families in their communities get connected with Shriners Hospitals for Children – Cincinnati, and now it has become even easier with a website and referral cards.

WebsiteShriners Hospitals for Children – Cincinnati continues to make referring a patient and obtaining an appointment for care easier than ever through the www.shrinershospitalcincinnati.org website.

For 50 years, Shriners Hospitals for Children – Cincinnati has treated pa-tients from states across the country, and Shriners have made it possible. We all work together to provide families with the necessary resources to get to our hospital, as well as a place to stay and options to get around while they’re here.

In some cases, air travel may be need-ed. When making arrangements, don’t forget to check out airfare rates at CVG, the Cincinnati/Northern Ken-tucky International Airport! Though it used to have a reputation as one of the country’s most expensive airports, it is now the lowest-fare airport in the region, according to the U.S. Depart-ment of Transportation. Cincinnati’s airport has become quite competitive, with many of the more affordable air-lines among its choices.

Last summer, Southwest airlines added daily service to and from Cincin-nati with plans for growth as they monitor the travel patterns of their CVG customers.

Frontier and Allegiant are two other airlines offering affordable flights to and from Cincinnati, including many non-stop options. Frontier offers non-stop flights from 22 cities including Miami and Jacksonville, Florida, while Allegiant offers 21 non-stop flights to cities from CVG.

These airlines are excellent options for our patients, especially with non-stop flights, which eliminate plane changes, potential missed flights and lost luggage!

Once in town, Cincinnati Shriners Hospital has hotel-like living quarters on site called Family Care Units for patients and their families who need to spend the night. The hospital also offers taxi assistance, and car services like Lyft and Uber for people to get around.

There are many options for patients and families traveling to our wonder-ful hospital in Cincinnati. With your help, we can look forward to another 50 years of caring for kids.
