Get creative with your platterA serving plate is fine, but you might also use a wooden board, a slab of marble or a piece of slate.

Choose a variety of cheeses including a soft-ripened cheese, or 'bloomy rinds' as they're also knownThen, add a semi-soft cheese, like gouda or havarti. You'll also need hard/firm cheeses like manchego or pecorino. And for a more tangy option add a goat's milk cheese. Round out the spectrum of flavours with a washed rind cheese and a blue cheese.

Elevate your cheese platterTo take your cheese platter to the next level, try serving something completely unique, like the PC black label Isle of Man Extra Mature Cheddar. This selection is made with locally sourced milk from the Isle of Man in the British Isles and is a full-flavoured cheese that is matured for at least 15 months. Once you've chosen the main features, enhance the platter with toppers, such as red pepper jelly, pesto, or sliced peaches.

Get your quantities rightFor a party platter, appetizer, or dessert cheese plate, serve a small crowd around three to five types of cheese, and five to 10 types for a larger crowd. Calculate for approximately 30 to 40 grams of each cheese, per person.

Don't forget the accompanimentsFruits like figs, pears and grapes are always enjoyable, but dried fruits work well too. Add unsalted roasted nuts and fresh bread and complete your platter with honey, fruit compotes and pickled vegetables. THN

REVIEW EVERYTHING BEING PACKED: If you have items you won't use or haven't used in six months, put them aside. They are good candidates for selling at a garage sale, listing in online classified ads, donating to charity, or as a last-case scenario, throwing away.

Also, look for ways to reduce your load. Canned goods may still have shelf life, but evaluate whether it makes sense to move or donate - it's likely the latter. The same goes for other items you can easily and inexpensively purchase at a discount store when you arrive at your destination. As you approach moving day, be sure to think twice before loading up at grocery or convenience stores.

As you take inventory of everything in your home, be sure to clean, organize and sort the remaining items so they can be packed quickly and then easily found when you arrive at your new home.

GET SECUREDBEFORE YOU MOVE: Feeling secure and in control is an important part of transforming a new house into a home. A home security and automation system gives homeowners the ability to not only monitor their home's security, but also control functions such as adjusting lights, unlocking doors and controlling thermostats - all with the touch of an app. Plus, it can start working for new homeowners on day one, whether using it to grant access to trusted contractors and technicians or receiving alerts when deliveries arrive at the front door. In a new neighbourhood and a new house, it will be a sigh of relief to know you're in control both at home and while away. »

KEEP ORGANIZED ON MOVING DAY: Walk through the old home with your movers to identify how you'd like your items organized and packed. Let them know you want the house packed room by room, which will make it easier to unpack and place everything into your new house. If you have anything fragile, be sure to note how you'd like those items to be handled, saving you plenty of time and headaches in the long run.

If you're planning to move yourself, it's important to take precautions and protect your belongings while the truck is being loaded and unloaded. Have a team of trusted friends or family help you - the more sets of eyes, the easier it will be to keep track of your belongings. If you need to keep the truck parked overnight, back the vehicle up to a wall or garage door, which will make it difficult for someone to break in.

MAKE YOURSELF A HAPPY PLACE: Choose one room in your new home to be the room you completely unpack and organize on the first day. This gives you a restful sanctuary where you can retreat, even if the rest of your items are still in boxes scattered among the other rooms for several days to come.

DOCUMENT AND SHARE THE TRANSFORMATION: Use your smartphone or camera to document the change of your new home as your items are unpacked and placed. This allows you to see how your hard work has paid off.

With these tips, you can streamline your move and make it less stressful for you and your family. THN

Peter & Sarah Oddi’s 1st annual charity event, Peter’s Pumpkin Palooza, was a great success! The Palooza was sponsored by Peter and Sarah Oddi, real estate representatives of Royal LePage Meadowtowne Realty, and was held on Sunday, October 19, 2014 at the Gellert Community Centre Park in Georgetown. The Palooza raised over $3,000 for the Georgetown Hospital Foundation with many thanks to all who attended and donated generously.

When asked the reason behind sponsoring this type of event, Peter and Sarah Oddi both agreed that they were looking to give back to the community as a thank you for the community’s continued support of their business.

The 2nd annual event is already booked for Sunday, October 18, 2015 at the Gellert Community Centre. Mark your calendars and be sure not to miss it !

ChicSTORAGE IDEAS to CORRAL CLUTTER

BOOSTBEDROOMSTORAGEIf every closet, nook and cranny in your home is occupied, it's time to look toward other avenues for order. Calm your chaos with under-bed storage units by transforming old dresser drawers into storage space. Paint the drawers in the colour of your choice and drill casters to the bottom for easy rolling access. Slide them under your bed and you can now neatly put away items that were once a nuisance.

MULTIPURPOSEseatingChic ottomans and cushioned benches are great pieces that provide extra seating in family rooms. But in addition to their pleasant outward appearance, many contain hidden storage underneath the lid. Neatly stow away movies, games, blankets and pillows that would otherwise crowd this high-traffic area. Position the furniture as an accent piece or place a lengthy bench along a window for a cozy reading nook, while simultaneously increasing your storage. »

neat READING RACKSMany people enjoy a good read before counting sheep. However, books, magazines and tablets can just add disarray if left scattered around the bedroom. To combat this type of clutter, add wall-mounted magazine racks or crates to hold your reading pieces. Here's how to create a couple of holders; Paint a wooden crate. Add stripes in striking colours for a reading rack that's functional and fabulous looking. After drying, cut your crate down the middle - you now have two spots for book storage. Install simple wall-hanging brackets to the edges of the crates and attach each to the wall with drywall anchors for a sturdy and safe finish. These are also great for stowing away toys in a child's playroom or towels in the bathroom.

ith the fall season comes cool weather and more time indoors. Snuggling up with blankets and partaking in activities at home can create more clutter than usual around the house. Instead of getting frustrated, it's easy to add stylish storage to corral extra items. Get organized and keep your home clutter-free with a few smart tips. »

cozySTAIRCASE STORAGE The space under stairs is often overlooked as a storage spot, since it's usually closed off with drywall. What most homeowners don't realize is this tricky triangle is typically hollow, and the "wasted" space can be utilized to store your family's odds and ends. For extra functionality, transform it into a closet if you're a DIY weekend warrior. All you'll need is a couple of days and these steps:

FIRST , frame the door opening for your new closet. Use a drywall saw to create the outline that fits the pre-hung door of your choice. Secure the hinged side to the frame and use wood shims (thin pieces of wood that will properly align the door) to ensure it's a secure fit within the opening.

NEXT , you'll need to create the closet walls inside. Measure the area of the closet and cut sheets of plywood or drywall to those dimensions (depending on how "finished" you'd like the final space to look). Paint the plywood in the colour of your choice and install it by nailing it to the existing studs. Just keep in mind that drywall will require a few extra steps, like taping, mudding and sanding before it's ready to paint.

NOW , determine what size storage containers and hooks the space will allow and create shelves and cubbies. Using a nail gun, install ledger strips around the entire closet to support the shelves, making sure they're level. Secure with screws and install your painted shelves for a cozy - and contained - storage solution.

If the construction of this project seems a bit too ambitious, reach out to a trusted contractor to handle the building components. You can tackle the most fun part - painting!

Whether you have limited storage or are simply looking for ways to bring order to your home, now is the time to reorganize. With these suggestions, you'll achieve a modernized and tidy living space, in no time at all. THN
