What is HIYAS?HIYAS is OMF Literature’s imprint for children’s books. The word “hiyas” means “gem”in Filipino, an appropriate name for books that contain treasures for children. InHIYAS books, readers will discover a wealth of enjoyable stories, memorable characters, imaginative art, and indispensable biblical values.

HIYAS was awarded in 2005 by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino for its contribution toadvancing Filipino children’s literature. It was cited for its promotion of the Filipino language through stories that hve a clear and positive message that instills godly values.

Why choose HIYAS?HIYAS stories are written especially for kids: some endearing, some action-packed, someinformative. Creative illustrations combine with fascinating stories to trigger a kid’simagination.

Most of the HIYAS books are presented in a bi-lingual English-Filipino parallel format tofurther develop an appreciation for both languages.

But at the heart of every HIYAS book is a Christian value essential to a child’s characterdevelopment. Presented in stories, these essential lessons are easier to understand and apply.

This is why each HIYAS book is more than just a tale—it’s a tool for the parent or teacherstriving to build in the child a foundation of godly character.

What is HIYAS looking for?HIYAS is looking for original and interesting manuscripts, fiction or non-fiction,written in the Philippine context for Filipino or Asian children. Writers forHIYAS should be members-in-good-standing of Bible-believing churches.

HIYAS stories teach Christian values, obedience to God’s Word, or love forGod and other people. Stories may also help kids to learn good habits, appreciate God’s creation, or draw them to trust in the Lord.

If you are interested to write for HIYAS, download the book proposal form and read

Start early, REALLY early. Research any study on reading during the pregnancy stage and you’ll see that statistics show that mothers who read to their womb are more likely to give birth to kids who will be voracious readers. And even iftoddlers can’t read full sentences yet, reading to them will help developtheir love for the written word.

Read aloud. Even if you’re not reading children’s books to them, reading aloud the newspaper, label instructions, billboards and anythingelse you can read to them will instill a love for the written word.

Make reading time a fun time. Liven up the seemingly “boring”reading time with pre– and post–reading activities like picture crossword puzzles, art projects and audio-visual support. Kids these days need all the stimulation they can get.

Participation is the key. In addition to creating gamesbefore and after, let the kids be part of the actual readingby having them turn the pages of the book, having themrepeat certain phrases and words you read, talking aboutthe pictures, and asking questions within the story.

Again and again and again. Even if you’re already tired ofthat one book that they keep asking for, read it to them again, with varying voices, phrasing, even adding your own bit to it.And when they’ve almost memorized it, ask them to read it to you.

Make the Internet your friend, not your enemy.Instead of fighting the Internet, why not make it a supplement for your reading? There are all kinds of interactive games and activities online that can be related to the book you’re reading or studying.

As kids get older, find new genres. Picture books willnot work well with older kids, while wordy books might bebeyond their reach for now. Discover new styles that canpique their interest.

Make bookshops their “home”. Make frequent trips to your local community library or bookstore so that they will feel at home around books. Look for a place that encourages cus-tomers to browse and read so the kids would be comfortable enough to hang out there.

Lead by example. How can kids give importance to bookswhen they see that you yourself rarely pick up one? So go out and read a book so they can see that you think reading is fun!

“Tutubi Patrol 2 is the very best of all time!” - Evans

“I like the story of Bumbi Bubuyog in Tutubi Patrol 8 because it teaches me to be content with who I am. Sometimes we look for something better, without knowing that God has already given us the best.” - Novelyn

“I really like Tomo. It really shows true friendship and howto respond when others criticize you and look down on you.I love the way the story goes and the way the animator made the characters come alive.” - Aiszy

“I can relate with Arthur’s Angry, especially when I’m angry. But thank God I’m learning to control my anger.” - Chinglee

“SuperDevos is very entertaining and informative. Very educational. It’s like the World Almanac, but this one teaches lots of values.” - Mars

“My son loves Tomo, he reads it every day. Even though it is a comic book, we can learn things from the story.” - Vic
