The Entertainment Issue features revealing interviews with Britain's best-loved comedian Alan Carr and fashion photography's maverick, Rankin. Other highlights include autumn/winter style advice from the founder of Liverpool's most famous fashion store, Cricket, eye-catching men's and womenswear photo-shoots, plus news and reviews from the North West's social scene.

As this is the Enter-tainment Issue, it seemed only fitting to feature an interview with born entertainer, Alan Carr, as he lim-

bers up for two nights of stand-up at the Echo Arena. Alan’s not giving much away about his new ‘Spexy Beast’ show, though he did divulge: “It’s about chatting. I’m into detailing the minutiae of life. I’m never going to do an hour on tugboats!” So bad news for tugboat aficionados, but good news for the rest of us, as the comedian heads to Liverpool on 25th October. In the meantime, you can read more of Alan’s comedy musings in this month’s interview on p8. Continuing with the theme of entertain-ment, you’ll find our food and drink rec-ommendations from p24, a handy social diary roundup, courtesy of award-winning networker Geniene Reese, on p30, and must-buy gadgets to make your home that little bit livelier from p44. Other highlights of the issue include an indispensible guide to the season’s biggest fashion trends by Justine Mills (His & Hers’ style guru and founder of legendary Liverpool fashion store Cricket) on p10. For a further fashion fix, turn to p13 for our most rock & roll womenswear shoot to date, or p33 for a style shoot featuring your menswear essentials for autumn/winter. Another personal highlight of this edition has been finding out what makes Rankin,

one of my fashion photography heroes, tick. To celebrate the launch of his new watch designs for Swatch, which became instant best-sellers in Liverpool, Rankin opens up to His & Hers about his ties to the city and his meteoric rise to fashion’s hall of fame (see p26). Special thanks are due to Liverpool ONE, John Lewis, Cavern Walks and the Metquarter for making our men’s and womenswear shoots possible and to Liver-pool’s best-dressed men and women for providing us with plenty of inspiration for this month’s Street Smart pages on p18 and 40. If you’d like to see yourself on these pages, look out for our Street Smart team, who’ll be coming to a high street near you in September. We’ll be back next month with more exclu-sive celebrity interviews, winter skincare survival tips, even more fashion pages, plus our roundup of where to eat, drink and shop in the North West. See you next month.

In the first of her new monthly col-umns, Justine Mills, founder of Cricket, the store that put Liverpool on the fashion map, helps us get to grips with the new season trends. Yes, we’ve had a wash-out of a summer, but at least it’s been the perfect weather to start us think-ing about autumn/winter’s fashion trends. There’s no better time to start planning for the season ahead before all the best pieces are snapped up. Here are a few of the key new looks to update your wardrobe: Jewel Colours. You’ll find an array of shades, from turquoise to emerald or fuchsia on the rails, but as with all trends, if the prospect of wearing jewel colours from top to toe takes you out of your comfort zone, simply introduce a pop of colour through your accessories. I know it’s too early to say the c-word, but people are already beginning to think about what to wear for their Christmas parties, and choosing jewel colours is a great way to stand out from the crowd. Capes. Lanvin and Alice Temperley have de-signed some beautiful capes, which would be perfect for the party season. Black Trousers. Classic black trousers are finally making a comeback. We’ve long resisted them in favour of skinny jeans or leggings, but trousers are a great investment piece which will form the foundations of your wardrobe. Animal Print. It’s worth investing in animal print, as this is a perennial trend to which the designers

will always return to. If you’re worried about looking a bit Bet Lynch, tone this look down by combining it with sophisticated berry shades, greys and browns. Anything by Phoebe Philo. Celine’s head de-signer Phoebe Philo can do no wrong at the mo-ment. What she does one season, other designers will imitate the next. Even if it’s out of your price range, it’s well worth coming in to Cricket to look at her collection, featuring amazing basics with a twist, for fashion inspiration. Modern Luxury. Exotic prints, animal prints and navy all make us think of luxury in times of aus-terity, so expect to see more of these feel-good luxe looks. S&M (as seen at Louis Vuitton) This was an edgy look on the catwalks, but it’s filtered down in a more wearable way. Look out for lots of leather and chains on bags in a subtle nod to the S&M trend. Spots and Dots. This will be another massive trend for the season. Why not incorporate it through your scarf, gloves, tights or nail polish – this is the perfect way to stay on-trend if money’s tight. Below-the-Knee Skirts. Another key trend for the season and one which is best paired with high heels! Justine will be back with more fashion news next month. www.cricketliverpool.co.uk

Hayley, 19, Student We've never seen Timberland boots look so good! Hayley teams her boots with a vin-tage-inspired shirt and classic Top-shop jeans. Finish-ing with a 'grandma' cardigan, gives the look a cute, quirky twist

Helen, 22, Student Helen goes for a classic trans-seasonal pairing of a cute jumper, jeans and ankle boots. Her vintage-inspired accessories and coral lipstick keep the outfit understated yet on-trend and out of the ‘too safe' territory - nice work, lady!

Hannah, 18, Beautician Another Liverpool lass inspired by this season’s vintage ladylike trends is Hannah. We're loving the way she’s updated her M&S dress with this gorgeous yel-low River Island jacket and Aldo bag combination.

Charlotte, 31, Stylist A classic Zara trench is the perfect trans-seasonal cover-up, and designer staples such as this gor-geous Alexander Wang handbag and Marc Jacobs scarf add a luxe feel to a stylist’s wardrobe.

Lucy, 18, Student A/W outfits are often dominated by dark colours and muted palettes, so we loved Lucy's refreshing take on the season in this yellow H&M dress which gives her black biker jacket a soft edge.

Louise, 17, Student Super sweet and city chic, we loved Louise's Topshop jumper and shirt combo, which tap into the season’s vintage trends. However, pairing them with Converse All Stars gives the outfit a funky edge - top marks, Louise!

A BBC Radio Merseyside broadcast jour-nalist who’s perhaps better known as the ‘woman in the van’ from Tony Snell’s breakfast show, Jessica Robbins is in work covering the early morning news before many people have woken up . I was very intrigued to find out if the 5am alarm’s worth it… “The early reporter job is the best one,” enthuses Jessica, “I get to meet remarkable people, see the sunrise and do interviews on beautiful beaches.” While studying broadcast journalism, Jes-sica secured work experience at BBC Radio Merseyside - four years later, she’s still there and has been able to work on some very exciting jobs, the best being Liver-pool’s Capital of Culture celebrations. “I was part of the reporting team for events, including the La Machine spider; to be part of that was an honour.”

Jessica doesn’t want to lose the human touch and is often moved by the stories she covers, especially the morning she was out in Croxteth after Rhys Jones was killed. “I had to read tributes out live on air that his friends had left him; it took me three or four goes before I could do it without crying,” she recalls. She’s interviewed celebs such as Kenny Dalglish, The Saturdays and Westlife, but it’s meeting people with truly amazing stories that is most rewarding. “I’ve found grandparents looking after their grandchil-dren because the parents were drug addicts, and couples who had fostered hundreds of children” She says getting into journalism was hard, but knows that with enthusiasm and deter-mination, it’s possible. “I love what I do and couldn’t think of doing anything else. You may see me on TV in the future, though - I’ve always fancied that!” www.bbc.co.uk/merseyside

If you’ve not heard of it yet, be introduced to So Coco Rouge, a gem in the heart of Liverpool city centre, founded by make-up artists Robyn Turnbull and Sian-Louise Auld. Sourcing make-up artists for photo shoots, films and VIP events, the ‘Rougettes’ are located within the Hahnemann Building, where they also offer an appointment-only service and cater for all occasions from a Saturday night on the town to weddings. Close friends for many years, Robyn and Sian studied together at the School of Make-up in Manchester and have since jointly worked on jobs including London Fashion Week for various fashion labels. They say the key to their success is mutual respect and feel that without each other’s support they would never have taken this leap into starting their own company. Next steps for this already successful young company? They’re looking to help, support and to build a local network of competent, reliable freelancers. But as well as painting faces, the women are keen supporters of North West Cancer Research Fund, with Sian acting as a local committee member. As it represents an issue close to their hearts, Robyn and Sian were inspired to hold the launch of So Coco Rouge in aid of the charity, which is an independent organisation, providing grants to support fundamental research into the causes of cancer. I’ve recently had my make-up done by So Coco Rouge, and I must say I’d highly recommend a trip to see them in Hope Street at the earliest opportunity. www.sococorouge.com

I asked what we, the public could do to help and Race Director Alan Rothwell commented: “It would be fantastic if those people who actu-ally live on the route would decorate their gardens for the day to make it a real spectacle” There will also be designated points on the route where local community groups can have the

opportunity to perform to runners and spectators. Alan continues: “We’re keen to work with groups from both Liverpool and Wirral who would like to showcase their talents on the route. BEST FOR CATALONIAN CHARM Bustling with cheerful diners, even on a Monday, Lunya is the kind of place where you could spend hours indulging in great food, drink and conversation whilst watch-ing the world go by. Featuring both an award-winning restau-rant and deli, Lunya offers exquisite Cata-lonian cooking created with the finest local produce. With a little advice from Lunya’s charming proprietor, Peter Kinsella, on the extensive menu before us, we started with some enormous olives and sourdough bread served with oils and a maple-infused bal-samic vinegar so moreish that I could have sipped it through a straw. Moving on to our tapas, the stand-out dishes were the Ibérico BBQ pork ribs, with meat so tender that it practically fell off the bone, and the squid, delivered daily, fresh from the Cornish seaside, and served in Cain’s raisin beer batter. Lunya is a truly superb independent offer-ing, with a high standard of service. On Monday evenings, couples receive a free bottle of wine when they spend £35 on food. lunya.co.uk

BEST FOR AUTHENTIC ITALIAN Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Castle Street, we discovered a taste of the Italian Riviera at The Olive Press. Descending the staircase into the candlelit bar, we paused for a swift drink on the comfy leather stools before heading over to our table. Despite its basement level location, The Olive Press is surprisingly light and airy thanks to a few well placed skylights and a romantic smattering of tea lights. We couldn’t wait to see what the chefs had to offer and nibbled on a bowl of mixed olives with fresh bread and oils as we pe-rused the menu. We were spoilt for choice and eventually decided to keep it simple with a mozzarella, plum tomato and basil salad and grilled tiger prawns with garlic and parsley to start. Our main courses: pork cutlet saltimbocca with rosemary potatoes and pan-fried sea bream served with braised leeks and a side of butter crushed new potatoes – yum! Both delicious, the pork rich and succulent while the sea bream was light and refreshing. With a des-sert board calling out to us we couldn't resist an enticing panna cotta to share. theolivepress.uk.com

HOTEL INDIGO LIVERPOOL’S CHICEST NEW HANGOUT FEATUR-

ING A MARCO PIERRE WHITE RESTAURANT

25

Liverpool’s newest design hotel, Hotel Indigo, may be gaining a reputation as the new celeb hangout, but it’s the food and drink that His & Hers is really ex-cited about. Since its star-studded launch last month, Hotel Indigo has been attracting more than its fair share of high-profile guests. How-ever, we think that even if you go for the people-watching, you’ll stay for the rather impressive food and drink offering. A particular favourite of the His & Hers team is the hotel’s signature Cotton Candy Martini, which is served with a flourish, starting with a wisp of candy floss, over which an expertly mixed blend of vodka, Chambord, grenadine, lime juice and Cham-pagne is poured. The serving of the cocktail is pure visual theatre, making it a new fa-vourite with Liverpool’s beautiful people. Restaurant Manager Gary Scott told His & Hers: “The philosophy of our cocktails’ list is simple: a short list of classic cocktails made perfectly. Our bartenders will also make you your own favourite if it’s not on

the list, or create a bespoke cocktail for you designed around your own personal taste.” Look out for special offers, such as ‘Indigo Time’, from 4.30-6.30pm on Thursdays and Fridays, when all cocktails and bottled beers are covered by a three-for-two offer. And make the most of the best seasonal ingredi-ents with ‘Drink the Seasons’, Hotel In-digo’s limited edition cocktails for autumn and winter. www.hotelindigo.com

My diary's been filled with an eclectic mix of events this month - from glamorous networking evenings to camping!

11th-19th August. Jacques Town House Event. For one week in August, Liverpool’s Rodney Street was a hot spot in the city with one of its Georgian buildings being trans-

formed into the sensational Jacques Townhouse. The opening night saw VIP guests savouring the masquerade with glamorous hosts, maids and waiters serving up amazing food.

Eastzeast Launch. Before packing for the V Festival, I went along to the launch party of Eastzeast, the new Punjabi restaurant located opposite the Echo Arena, and what a launch it

was! The food and drink was flowing and they had ice sculptures, Bollywood dancers, not to mention a whole host of celebrities.

Parcours Launch. On the business front, Parcours (LLP) held their official launch party today. Their goal is to teach people how to better communicate by breaking down the

barriers created through lack of cultural aware-ness.

Liverpool ONE’s Clothes Throw. Alex Fletcher from Hollyoaks, fashion designer Kirsty Doyle and patients from Alder Hey Children’s Hospital arrived at Liverpool ONE

today to donate clothes and officially open the ‘giant bag’ donation station for Alder Hey’s Clothes Throw campaign. Donated outfits will be used to stock the Liverpool ONE Clothes throw pop-up shop in October.

V Festival. I attended this year’s V Festival armed with my fabulous ‘wedge wellies’ (as featured on Dragon’s Den) for a few extra inches and a pop-up tent (which we assem-

bled in seconds, but took down over hours. No-one tells you how hard it is to disassemble pop-up tents!) My verdict: I’ll be back next year for more great Liverpool bands like Cast, but I won’t be camping!

De-Stressing at Urban Calm. Medicash hosted a relaxing network-ing event at Urban Calm in the Metquarter last night. Guests min-gled over wine and canapés before

sampling a range of free treatments and a VIP appearance from two well-known Saints Rugby League Football Club players was extremely well received.

The Blooming Great Tea Party. Liverpool baker Laura O’Connor of Laura’s Little Bakery and charity event organiser Pauline Cox hosted their Blooming Great Tea Party,

raising almost £6,000 for Marie Curie today.

25th August-10th September. The Liverpool Shakespeare Festival launched with a dazzling perform-ance 'Romeo and Juliet' at St George’s Hall. See liverpoolshake-

spearefestival.com for more details. Next month I’ll be back out at the many events that will be going on in September, starting with the press launch of the Wedding House, Down-town in Business’s sexy networking and the re-launch of the Malmaison, so will have much to report! www.genienereese.com

With annual sales of £64.2bn it is not hard

to see why we all flock to London. The

quality and quantity of shops seem to be-

stride a modest split in public opinion: to

fashionistas, London is an emporium of raw

and innovative talent with a hotbed of new

concepts, but to others it is merely an

over-saturated cesspool of ‘designer’

culture. The truth is, whether we like it

or not, we all have a stake in fashion

because we all wear its prod-

ucts.

With LFW set for a knock-out

line-up next month, it is great

to see the city so widely rec-

ognised as the flagship for

our own apparel industry -

employing more than

1,650,000 people. LFW has

bridged the gap between

designers and the high-

street by commissioning

projects with retail outlets

such as Topshop to launch capsule

collections for new generations such

as Christopher Kane. Giving birth to

designers such as John Galliano, Alex-

ander McQueen, and Stella

McCartney, it is definitely a produc-

tion that is at the heart of our industry

and one not to be missed.

With all the hype that surrounds this wonder

of the fashion world, it is best to plan your

trip in advance. With sponsor-hotels such as

the Sanderson and Mayfair booked out by

fashion and publishing houses months in

advance, it is best to opt for somewhere like

The Courthouse Hotel to rest your weary

legs. Directly adjacent to Liberty’s, this

building romances the old and new. Re-

stored cells, court rooms and chambers

make up the marrow of this characterful

building and you are treated to all of the

modern-day comforts a Hilton could offer,

with the charm of a structure that once en-

tertained Oscar Wilde’s Queensbury case

and John Lennon’s sensational lithograph

drawings court case.

Now that summer is here and picnics are the

order of the day, what better way to cele-

brate than with a trip to Carluccio’s infa-

mous deli? With walls adorned with spices

and dressings, tables bedecked with giant

muffins and meringues, and more pasta than

you can shake a stick at, this is like stepping

into an Aladdin’s cave of authentic Italian

cuisine. The ‘classic’ hamper is a real feast,

with dishes including focaccia imbottita,

terina di maiale e funghi, and salmone in acqua pazza con insalata di patate – perfect

for in-between-show indulgence. Summer

As the first hotel to lay its foundations in

London, there is nothing more à la mode

than a trip to HIX at The Albemarle restau-

rant in Brown’s. After hours of pounding

catwalks, polished cutlery and crisp white

tablecloths are the order of the day for your

fashionable bon vivant in this venerable

setting steeped in a subtle British patriot-

ism. The menu is quintessentially well-

Englished. Starter offerings include Cum-

brae rocks’ oysters; potted Morecambe Bay

shrimps; and dressed Portland crab – with

mains featuring dishes such as pan-fried

fillet of Peterhead cod with surf clams and

samphire; and fillet of Kingairloch red deer

with black cabbage and Scottish girolles.

You are certain to devour whatever dish

you order – cooked to perfection and drip-

ping in the jus of fine gastronomy, this is

one dining experience that is worth every

penny and will not be forgotten quite as

quickly as some of the fashion faux pas of

LFW.

Ben, 20 Retail Assistant Dressed head-to-toe in Urban Out-fitter-endorsed brands, it is clear where this style crusader works. Wearing a shirt and shorts by Farah, this cool look is finished with a pair of Vans – a fine ambassador for UO.

Scott, 24 Electrician On a lads’ trip, Scott was spotted merry in L1. With his ‘morning-after’ attire firmly stashed in his River Island bag, he started his revelry in a H&M top, Topman shoes and pants, and an ASOS belt.

Steve, 24 Recruitment Consultant With a Topman jumper and trou-sers, Steve has gone for comfy Converse to help him in the cam-paign to find jobs for Liverpool’s unemployed.

Passions MY DESIGN

In her role as Events Manager at Jazz Publishing, which can involve working on several shows at once, Shelley Bond’s no stranger to long hours and tight dead-lines. This month Shelley reveals the visual treats that she turns to for inspira-tion when planning red-carpet events like the Northern Design Awards.

NICK MUNRO TIN TIN COFFEE POT

Long hours and multi-tasking mean I harbour a deep love of caffeine.

Good coffee deserves to be poured from something like this. A recent purchase and something I'll cher-

ish forever - just beautiful! Price: £49.

MALMAISON, LIVERPOOL One of the earliest date weekends I spent with my partner was in a Malmaison hotel. I adore the dark brooding rooms and the clever light-ing. Staying at the Mal always feels like a treat and I’ve recently acquired a hotel-inspired thick black bedroom carpet in the hope that I'll achieve the look at home!

HABITAT’S CITY FLAP CLOCK I bought Habitat's City Flap clock for my boyfriend three Christmases ago. This is a great design with a real retro feel and it looks fantastic above the old Aga in the kitchen. Price: £80.

THE ULTIMATE LBD I'm not sure it exists for

me, but a classic little black dress has been something which I have been search-ing for for many years. In that time I have acquired

26 little black dresses, and I adore that every woman's

take on the 'ideal' one can be so very different.

ALESSI "ANNA G" CORK-SCREW Being on the go from early 'til late, I love to unwind with a glass of vino in the evenings. We have a large collection of bottle open-ers but this Alessi design is our tip-top favourite. I'd like one in every colour. Price: £28.
