LITHUANIA

Lithuania, officially the Republic of Lithuania is the biggest of all Baltic states with the population of 2,9 million. Lithuania, like Latvia also has a magical coastline with white sand dunes blown by the wind and beaches formed by its stunning nature. Surrounded by the green land, lakes and rivers, every place in Lithuania has something valuable to offer. Being on the UNESCO World heritage list, Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania is considered one of the most charming in Europe. It has attracted various nations, styles and religions, which helped it become Lithuania’s cultural centre.

LATVIA

Latvia is a gorgeous country and a middle sister of other two Baltic states with its 1,9 million inhabitants. Blessed with hundreds of kilometres of white sand coastline, countless rivers and lakes, Latvia has a breath-taking landscape and truly preserved natural beauty. Most of the country’s territory is covered by forests and half of the country is made up of largely untouched natural ecosystems. In the meantime, the untouched landscape peacefully coexists with lively Latvian cities and rich culture.

ESTONIA

Estonia, officially the Republic of Estonia is the smallest of Baltic states with 1,3 million people living in the country. Estonia, too, shares the alluring Baltic Sea coastline with Latvia and Lithuania, but that is only one of many fascinating qualities Estonia has. It is a country of thousands of lakes with almost half of its territory covered with mixed forests – a home for many beautiful native species of trees and shrubs. People in Estonia can enjoy spacious environments and countless quantities of fresh air that is usually considered a luxury in today’s world. Albert Foight has built a brewery in Panevėžys, Lithuania and named it in his native language: Bergschlösschen.

The brewery name was changed to Kalnapilis.

Lithuanian brewing tradition dates back to the 11th century and it reached its peak at the end of the 19th century - early 20th. At that time, the highest concentration of breweries was found in Aukštaitija - the native land of the Kalnapilis brewery. It was in this region where the true Lithuanian beer taste, greatly infl uenced by the German beer traditions and culture, was born.

From legendary Brewers’ land

I have been working as a  head brewmaster  and sommelier in Kalnapilis brewery for 18 years now.

Beer is as old as mankind with its many various subtleties, therefore it took long years of consistent learning in Lithuania as well as abroad for me to fi nally become a professional of this fi eld. I started studying at Kaunas Technology University, the College of Chemistry and then continued the brewer studies in Belgium. While I was a student, I discovered a job ad for a brewmaster position in Kalnapilis brewery. I was already very interested in the process of making beer, so I decided to come to Panevėžys and apply for that job. After a year of working in Kalnapilis brewery,  I  went  to Scandinavian School of Brewing in Copenhagen  to gain more international experience. Currently I am working as a lector in this school and   I’m glad to have the opportunity to share my experience and secrets of this art with others.

Beer making and sommelier expertise, which I received in The Beer Academy of London, have always  helped and supplemented  each other. The sommelier experience allows me to search for new fl avours and think not only about the result when creating beer recipes, but also about food combinations and what will go well with that particular beer. The inseparable part of brewer  job is creating new beer types.  I constantly experiment and try new fl avours and combinations. It takes a long time to create a new beer type – sometimes more than a year.

AboutVilkmergės is a super premium traditional Lithuanian craft beer. It is crafted following

the 18th century traditions. Vilkmergės brewmasters create only ale type of beer.

Vilkmergės off ers ales that are unique, distinctive and rich in taste. Ales are brewed

in small batches, using highest quality water, malt and hops. Vilkmergės beer is bottled in dark and thick glass. Limited edition Vilkmergės bottles have brought

back an archaic capacity unit LITHUANIAN QUART (0,82L). Regular editions are served in unique 1/2 QUART bottles (0,41L). Several

products are available in 0,5L cans.

Vilkmergės KVIETINISCloudy, almost white-coloured wheat beer with citrus aroma and gourmet fl avour.

This unfi ltered ale is noted for its creamy texture. It contains natural yeast sediment, so before pouring the beer into a glass stir the bottle up a bit for the yeast to rise. There is no need to add citrus or other fruit. This wheat beer goes perfectly with sophisticated or simple dishes that do not overwhelm the wheat taste. This beer is a gourmet choice for a fi lling lunch or a slow dinner.Sweetish Vilkmergės wheat beer is great with both soft and hard cheeses. It also pairs well with grilled, steamed or raw seafood and various salads.

Vilkmergės VYŠNIŲ KRIEKThe fi rst Lithuanian Cherry Kriek is characterised by its rich cherry aroma, colour as well as sweet and sour fl avour.

Kriek beer type has originated in Belgium, Brussels, and today comes back to life with Vilkmergės. First, brewmasters brew upper fermentation beer – light ale. Then, they add cherry juice and brew it up to the point when it turns into a light and subtle ale with berry aroma. That is exactly what Vilkmergės Cherry Kriek is. This ale is perfect with chocolate, chocolate desserts, cheesecake.

Vilkmergės ŠVIESUSISLight copper-coloured beer with expressive aroma and rich taste.

The beer has a slightly sweet aftertaste, unique fruit aroma and the bitterness of hops. We suggest pairing this ale with fried, smoked or stewed poultry meat. It also goes well with cold meat starters, mature Edam or Gouda cheese, meat salads or oily fi sh.

Vilkmergės TAMSUSISDark amber-coloured, exceptionally rich-fl avoured, yet harmonious dark ale.

We use four types of malt to create our dark beer: Lithuanian light barley malt and three types of caramel barley malt. Caramel malt creates barely perceptible coff ee aroma and fl avouring. It also gives our beer light caramel aftertaste and a powerful fl avour that characterizes dark beer. This beer pairs well with game meat and other dark meat dishes prepared on fi re or grill. Vilkmergės dark ale also pairs well with aromatic rich-tasting mushroom and potato dishes, chocolate cakes and other sweet desserts.

Vilkmergės LENGVAS ELISThis beer has the lightest taste in Vilkmergės selection. However, its taste is still very colourful and has a distinctive character. Golden amber-coloured with sweetish bread aroma, this slightly bitter beer has a very rich bready aftertaste.

This beer pairs beautifully with light salads, various poultry dishes or snacks. Also, give it a try while enjoying exotic seafood or Oriental cuisine.

Subtle tannin aftertaste and expressive apple aroma makes it even more distinctive. Brewed from ripe and carefully selected apples, Vilkmergės Craft Sidras is a semi-dry cider matured here in Lithuania.This cider pairs well with meat dishes, especially with sweet and sour or fried pork, or crispy chicken.
