A high level meeting on Youth Issues and Their Development was organized on Sunday 22nd April 2012 at

Saroh Office, near Scientific Public School Shahdadkot, District Kamber-Shahdadkot, Sindh. The meeting

was chaired by Mr. Javed Sheikh, Executive Director Saroh Social Development Organization Shahdadkot,Sindh, where as Mr. Imdad Hussain Brohi ORD Coordinator Co-chaired this meeting.

To encourage the youth for self-development and gainful employment through motivation, training and

other necessary support including micro-credit.

To organize and motivate youth organizations and motivate them to take part in communitydevelopment activities.

To involve the youth in socio-economic development activities like literacy programme, disastermanagement, environment conservation, primary health care such as advocacy on protection of

HIV/AIDS/drug abuse etc.

To take necessary steps for empowerment of youth through mainstreaming their in nationaldevelopment process.

To support young people in active involvement to the civil society and good governancedevelopment and management process.

To develop Leadership skills among Youth on local level.

After a general introduction of the participants Javed Sheikh Saroh Executive Director said welcome words

and thanked all the participants for attending this important meeting. He also explained the purpose and

objectives of the meeting. He told that Sarohs vision is a society in which marginalized groups equally enjoy

their Social, cultural, civil, economical and political rights without any discrimination. He again said that

Saroh has been striving to promote Youth and their rights.

He shared with the participants that the definition ofYouth do vary from country to country, for statisticalpurpose the United Nations (UN) defines Youth , as those persons between the ages of 15 and 24 years,

without prejudice to other definitions by Member States. He further shared that an estimated 103.698

million Pakistanis, or 63% of the population, fall under the age of 25 years. Youth Literacy rate is estimated

to be 53% while female youth literacy is even lower than 42%. He also shared that our youth has a lot of

issues and problems including child labour,

unemployment, Drug abuse, Suicide, misguidance from

some religious and political parties, increase in the use of

Pornography through Internet Caf s in the area. Mr.

Javed Sheikh also told that Youth are losing their lives in

tribal and blood feud conflicts in District Kamber-Shahdadkot. Hundreds of them have been killed in

Honour Killing. Human Trafficking is very common and

they dont have educational facilities like Libraries and

Public Parks and playgrounds. He emphasized all

participants to raise their voice for the development of

young people in the district.

Mr. Professor Qurban Ali Mangi, Lecturer in Government Boys Degree College Shahdadkot said that after

getting in Higher Studies, the youth is totally unaware. They dont have ideas, no career planning; even they

dont know about their subjects of the course. He added that the students should be given awareness

regarding their development of studies.

Mr. Dad Muhammad alias Arbelo Sheikh/ Jagerta said that in past students of colleges were attending their

classes with keen interest but now the classrooms are empty. There are no facilities in the educational

institutions and their entire budget is usurped. On the other hand the private schools and colleges

classrooms are full but the marginalized groups like poor and disabled cannot afford that education

atmosphere. He also highlighted bad effects of youth as they waste a lot of time in playing games and

wanderings. He emphasized Government to provide facilities to youth on urgent basis. He added that they

need to support by having meetings with Youth to

listen their issues, link and suggest them with

solutions. Highlighting Youth issues Mr. Manzoor

Ahmed Silro from Sindhu shared that there is greatneed to unite for Youth counseling, sports promotion

and coordination meetings. He also told that Sindhu is

conducting activities in SEF Schools for creating a

good education atmosphere in Shahdadkot, Qubo

Saeed Khan and Garhi Khero. He suggested that

meetings should be organized with young people at

village and muhalla level. ORD Coordinator Imdad

Hussain Brohi said that ORD is working for Youth

Development in Larkana and Kamber Shahdadkot Districts in Upper Sindh. ORD arranged seminar

programmes and also organized speech competitions for youth with the support of KDA, Aurat Foundation

and USAID. In future ORD plans to work for the Development of Youth in Shahdadkot. Muhammad Punhal

Silro shared that Batool was registered in 2008 and in flood disaster of 2010 it has done NFIs distribution

with IOM. He further said that Batool is organizing speech competitions and community meetings to

encourage young people of Shahdadkot. In last of his sharing he said that they need to spread awareness of

education in youth. Miss Zuhra Abbassi SRSO Unit In charge Shahdadkot said that all the representatives

should use their contacts in their area and invite other NGOs to involve Youth. She mentioned that they

should promote peace and understanding between different young stakeholders through regional projects in

the Region. She also suggested that they should achieve government support in the implementation of

regional youth projects in the district.

Mrs. Sartaj Sheikh from Saroh, opined that if there is any ray of hope for the real change in society, that is

only and only our youth. If their energies and abilities are rightly utilized, there is no doubt for the

sustainable and successful development in the country. Farhan Ali Pathan from HAWA urged all the

participants to work together for Youth capacity building and their development. Muhammad Pannah Abro

IOM Field Assessment Officer (Hyderabad), Pakistan Shelter Cluster, Sindh said that they had formed a

network for NGOs in the previous meetings. From this platform we all should hold meetings with parents topressurize them for sending their children to schools and colleges and also emphasize / MNAs and MPAs of

District Kamber Shahdadkot to address Youth issues. It was unanimously decided that struggle will be

started for Youth development. All the guests were served with refreshment during the meeting.

Following recommendations were unanimously suggested to be provided for the Youth of the region at the

earliest;
