Egyptians believed the God Thoth discovered Hieroglyphics.

Hieroglyphics came from “Hiero” meaning sacred and “Glyphic” meaning inscriptions.

3,400 BC was dated for the earliest known example of writing.

396 AD was dated the latest inscription of writing.

Eye of Horus is represented as the falcon-headed god.

Was an important god in Egyptian Legend

Was a powerful symbol used to protect from evil.

Eye of Horus represents a human eye with the cheek markings of a falcon.

Egyptians used paper (papyrus) to write on which was made of marsh plant called papyrus reed.

School boys used broken pieces of pottery because it was cheaper than papyrus.

Egyptians used pigment powder, made from a plant to make ink and paint when mixed with water.

They did not use numbers they used pictures

The higher numbered values were always written in front of smaller numbers.

Cartouche was a place to hold the name of a pharaoh.

In the fourth dynasty the two most important pharaoh names were put into the cartouche

They put their first name (nomen) and their throne name (prenomen) in to the cartouches.

Cartouche represents everything is encircled by then sun.

Was also a protective symbol to the king.

This is a picture of the cartouche of Tutankhamen.

Rosetta stone is an Ancient Egyptian Aritfact

Made up of three translations of single passages.

Written in two different Egyptian languages (hieroglyphic and domestic)

It was created in 196 BC discovered by the

French in 1799 at Rosetta.

Scribes are men that learn how to write hieroglyphics and hieratic.

Where the only people who know how to read and right hieroglyphics.

Hieroglyphics would usually appear on temples and in the tombs of pharaohs.

Scribes were the people who kept records of the government and wrote letters for the pharaohs.
