AFFORDABLE HOUSING Wilson HomesThe design and specification as requested by the client was developed in consultation with Wilson Homes, and the end result is quality, affordable and functional housing for moderate income households.

CUSTOM BUILT $350,000 – $600,000Wilson Homes — 90 Oates Rd, Mountain River This home blends perfectly into its surroundings through the use of stone and reclaimed solid timber features. The result is a beautiful and energy-efficient family home.

DISPLAY HOME OF THE YEARWilson HomesThe Sapphire is a great example of a family home with all the bells and whistles.

PROJECT HOME OF THE YEARWilson Homes — 59 Bayside Drive, LauderdaleThe Wilson Homes design team worked closely with the client to modify The Cosmopolitan display home plan and produce a substantial family home, with many features, in an idyllic location.

SPECIALISED HOUSINGWilson HomesThese independent living units feature landscaping, driveways, communal garden areas and linked pathways. Consideration in construction and fitout has met the needs of independent living residents, with additional features where required.

PROFESSIONAL MAJOR BUILDERWilson HomesThe judges commented that Wilson Homes is an exceptional business with strong foresight for the future. During the past 12 months, the business has grown and increased its market share in the Tasmanian residential industry. Wilson Homes attributes this to the quality of its product, increased buying power converting to lower consumer costs, and the provision of outstanding service to clients. Wilson Homes builds its reputation on building homes it is proud of. This starts with its communication with clients – providing flexibility in home design, detailed costings, a dedicated consultant to assist with product and colour selections, and providing an ongoing variation service.

A difficult and challenging project, this involved taking a large family home and creating two luxurious apartments. Well executed, it incorporates bespoke features and difficult construction detail, resulting in a luxurious and well-appointed apartment.

TOWNHOUSE/VILLA OF THE YEARCunic HomesThis investment property was built to appeal to tenants. This has been achieved through neutral finishes and interesting textures.

MARKETINGCunic HomesThe strong strategic decision in buying an existing brand within the current environment, along with a successful relaunch program, has enabled Cunic Homes to focus on core sectors for their marketing.

The development of their Cunic Homes App as a frontline communication tool for their clients presents strong forward planning with “just in time” contact, coinciding with the extra internal IT support for client problem-solving. The app displays a strong emphasis towards engaging and connecting with their clients.

Importantly, through the use of their online application, Cunic Homeshave successfully turned their customers into unique advocates in onselling their brand and services. Their marketing campaign keeps a central theme across all mediums, is overt, and is clever with simplicity in its approach.

Overall, Cunic Homes’ marketing is about what is necessary to move forward in building their business into 2017 and beyond.

The design of this ensuite has resulted in the transformation of an aged and characterless space into a private urban oasis. Located within the roof space of a 158-year-old inner-city home, this ensuite enjoys bold gestures and concentrates on the simple luxuries of natural light, air, timber and tactile surfaces.

BUSINESS PARTNER OF THE YEARCherie Dance — PA Dance BuildersCherie is a rarity in her field. The judges were impressed that she completed a Certificate IV in Construction within a small time frame. This demonstrates a real understanding of construction practices and techniques way beyond the normal business partner role.

Cherie is a valuable asset to her company. Her life balance between achieving this qualification and her children and personal life is a credit to her. Her commitment to the business and its future is one of the business’s core strengths.

PA Dance Builders was also named Professional Small Builder of the Year.

Drew Moore ConstructionsCarefully planned and thought-out materials and design features were used in making this addition the success that it is. Copper roof pans were custom-made for the new roof to complement the existing one. A huge slab of hand-selected Calcutta Marble provides the wow factor in the kitchen.

LIGHT COMMERCIAL PROJECTConstruction With DestinyThis contemporary fitout had the challenge of a heritage building to consider, but has managed to incorporate concealed state-of-the-art facilities and take full advantage of the light and space the high ceilings provide. Much thought has gone into every detail, including the challenging lighting layout and extensive use of tiles, creating a flexible and inviting atmosphere.

GREENSMART ENERGY EFFICIENCYSkookomAn exceptional example of a holistic green smart building. Stone and timber from the property were used for thermal mass walls and exterior and interior cladding, resulting in a contemporary home, totally off the grid, which generates excess power that is used to charge their electric car.

Rick Sassin Housing Industry Association (Tasmania) executive director

WE ARE excited about the future and the platform of positive changes to come with the immense building and planning reforms being introduced in Tasmania.

During 2015, new dwelling starts in Tasmania increased by some 18.8 per cent to 2774, which was among the strongest growth rates of the states and represents the highest calendar-year performance since 2010. A longer historical comparison, however, shows the actual level of building is on par with the average during the 2000s.

We have forecast a decline inactivity in 2016 (-21.5 per cent), in

CONGRATULATIONS to all entrants, finalists and award winners in each and every category.

The entries this year have been ofan extremely high standard and I look forward to watching the National Housing Awards unfold in the hope that, once again, Tasmania is successful in securing a national award.

This year has been a busy year with regards to policy reforms. The HIA and its service committees have been working with the government to secure the best possible outcomes for our industry, particularly with regards to both the Tasmanian Planning Scheme and the Building Regulatory Framework Review.

The incoming building legislationwill bring with it a risk-based approach to approvals, which we are anticipating will bring a much-needed reduction in red tape within our industry. On behalf of the HIA, I would like to acknowledge the government for its continued consultation with our industry as we work together through these building reform processes.

I would also like to acknowledgethe work of our HIA staff, not just for these awards, but throughout the year, and to express my thanks to the regional executive committee for the opportunity to serve as president for this term. It has been a pleasure and a most rewarding experience.

CONGRATULATIONS

TO ALL THE WINNERS!
