Important Garage Safety Tips

Is your garage really as safe as it should be? 70% of homeowners use the garage as the primary point of entry into their home. Make sure yourgarage is safe with these important tips.

Follow this handy GarageSafety checklist.

You may not be able to see or hear it,

but your garage door opener may not

be operating properly, or even safely.

Follow these 3 easy steps:

Block the photoeyes with an object over 6

inches tall, and press the garage door opener’s

close button. The door should not close.

Lay a 1.5 inch-high object on the ground in the

door’s path, and press the close button. The

door should reverse off this object.

Check the sides of your garage door for

properly installed photoeyes (black sensors),

mounted no higher than 6 inches off the fl oor.

You know that house in your neighborhood that gets totally done up every Halloween? The one with a dozen plastic

tombstones in the yard (R.I.P. Hugh R. Next!), witches on the roof, a skeleton

on the door, and orange twinkle lights everywhere? I love that house. That

house invites people to take a long look and have a laugh. If you live in that

house, thank you. Thank you for going gangbusters with ghosts, gourds, and

goblins, and for entertaining us with all your decorating ideas. It can’t be easy

to go to such great lengths every year. You must spend hours downloading

eerie music to pipe through the speakers hidden in your bushes. I bet you

search high and low to find dry ice for your porch cauldron, because

what’s a cauldron if a foggy brew isn’t bubbling over it? And you were

probably up to your elbows in pumpkin goo, carving jack-o’-lanterns

alone in the kitchen because the kids abandoned you for cartoons

in the other room. But you stuck it out! And now everybody

who passes by your amazing spooky-style place whips out

a phone and takes a pic. In your own spirited way, you’re

bringing the neighborhood together—doing your part

to perk up the block and create community pride. It’s as

easy to see as the giant inflatable spider in your yard:

Halloween just wouldn’t be the same without you.

Sara, your story “My Dollhouse Waited 34 Years for a Makeover” in the July/August issue brought back

memories. My sister and I recently

refurbished a dollhouse, which our

father built, for my grandnieces. We

finished it just in time for the girls’

shared birthday party!

—Nancy Dieckow,

San Antonio, TX

letters

I was so excited to see Young House Love in the July/August issue

(“100,000 People Visit Our House Every

Day”). They are such an inspiration to

“regular” people with an itch to get crafty!

—Lindsay Spears,

Washburn, MO

My ceiling fan has rattled for 12 years, and I had tried everything to fix it. Then I read Chip Wade’s advice in

“Talk to a Toolman” from the July/August

issue: Tighten the screws on the blades,

and measure from the tip of each blade

to the ceiling to make sure they all fall in

line. It worked—my fan is finally quiet!

—Linda Duguay,

Niagara Falls, Ontario

I had to smile when I read “Hey, Critters, Keep Out” in the June issue, because I have all of those animals in

my yard! I love living on the edge of the

woods, but there’s a lot of work involved.

Thank you for some new suggestions.

—Cathy Berk,

Anacortes, WA

Vern’s measurement tips couldn’t have come at a better time (June’s

“Design by the Numbers”). We were three

weeks away from moving into a new

home when the issue arrived. Now we’re

confident we’ll do all our projects right.

—Jill Lex,

Sugar Hill, GA

dear HGTV magazine

It was so much fun to play the real estate game “Is This House Old or New?” in your July/August issue. Thanks

for including stories that kids my age (12

years old) can enjoy! —Sara Bozuhoski,

TO US

When your July/August issue arrived, I was overjoyed. I said to my husband,

“Do I want the happiness of reading it

now, or should I let my anticipation build

until tomorrow?” He just shook his head

and laughed. —Jill Spaulding,

Battle Creek, MI

Vern’s room inspired this redo!

I nabbed this piano bench at a yard sale for $5. To give

it an update, I painted it red (Emperor’s Silk by Annie Sloan),

took the old fabric off the seat, added batting, and re-covered

it in a zigzag print from fabric.com. Thanks for the inspiration!

—Betsy Cain,

I am a big fan of Vern Yip’s style,

so when I saw the

striped walls in his

son’s room in your

May issue (“Playtime

With Vern”), I knew

I had to try that look

in my 3-year-old’s

room. I used two

shades of paint from

in high gloss. I love

the way it came out!

TWIST UP THE STEMSBrush a foot-long strand of twine with white

crafts glue, then wrap it around a marker.

While the glue is still sticky, slide the twine

off and set it aside on wax paper—this will be

the curly topper for your pumpkin. Wrap the

stem with another strand of twine, securing

with dabs of hot glue every few rotations.

Before you reach the top of the stem, hot-

glue the curly piece to the stem’s side. Finish

wrapping the rest of the stem with twine,

and hot-glue the end in place.

PLAY WITH PATTERNFor the design on the left, stick long strips of

masking tape on the pumpkin. You can cut

the tape into various widths first if you want.

Paint the pumpkin yellow, let dry, then peel

off the tape. For the zigzag design, freehand

the pattern using different-size crafts brushes

and a variety of paint colors.

very superstitious! If you’ve ever walked under a ladder or broken a mirror and thought, Uh-oh!, check out this list of good luck/bad luck beliefs to learn how they got started.

SUPERSTITION: Peacock feathers are unlucky.WHERE IT CAME FROM:

In Greek mythology

peacocks were sacred

to Hera, a jealous

and temperamental

goddess. Experts say

the connection to her is

what may have earned

the feathers a bad rap.

SUPERSTITION: Putting shoes on the table causes bad luck at home.WHERE IT CAME FROM: Since footwear

touches the floor—generally considered

a dirty or “bad” place—it’s thought

that putting them on the table brings

misfortune into your house.

ILLUSTRATIONS BY MELINDA BECK WRITTEN BY JAIMIE DALESSIO

SUPERSTITION: Walk beneath a ladder and something bad will happen.WHERE IT CAME FROM: One popular theory suggests that a ladder propped

against a wall, forming a triangle, symbolizes the Holy Trinity in the Christian

faith. Walking underneath it is disrespectful, thereby bringing bad luck.

Page 32: HGTV M 2013 10 Downmagaz.com

SUPERSTITION:

Passing someone going the opposite direction on the stairs is bad luck.WHERE IT CAME FROM: The origin traces back to biblical

times and the idea that there was a ladder bridging

the heavens and the Earth—the same way a staircase

connects two floors. Blocking a staircase was thought to

keep spirits from passing between the two worlds, which

would trigger negative consequences.

SUPERSTITION: If you spill salt, toss a pinch over your left shoulder to ward off bad luck.WHERE IT CAME FROM: Salt was once a

prized possession. Ancient Romans were

often paid in salt—it’s the origin of the word

salary—and many people assumed that if

you spilled salt, you’d attract evil spirits.

One way to keep them at bay was to throw

them a pinch.

SUPERSTITION: If you crack an egg and get a double yolk, it’s good luck.WHERE IT CAME FROM: Historically

eggs have symbolized new life. Experts

say that’s why some people equate the

rare occurrence of a double yolk with

doubly good fortune.

SUPERSTITION:

A horseshoe above your door with the open end pointing up brings good fortune.WHERE IT CAME FROM: Some say this

practice has Christian roots that can

be traced back to a story in which the

devil promised never to enter a house

with a horseshoe over the door. Some

also believed that the horseshoe’s

U-shape would catch and hold good

luck for the people inside the home.

Hanging the horseshoe upside down,

however, would empty out any luck

stored there.

SUPERSTITION: Placing a hat on the bed

leads to misfortune.WHERE IT CAME FROM: In ancient

times, it was taboo for a warrior to

bring his helmet into the house. Some

historians think that practice evolved into

the belief that putting your hat on the bed

would bring about unfortunate events.

SUPERSTITION: Break a mirror and you’ll have seven years of bad luck.

WHERE IT CAME FROM: People once

thought that a mirror held the soul of

the person looking into it, so it made

sense that if you cracked a mirror, you

would experience equally traumatic

consequences. The time period comes

from a belief that the body renews itself

every seven years.

SUPERSTITION: Placing your purse on the floor hurts your finances.WHERE IT CAME

FROM: In many

cultures, laying

something on the

floor is a sign of

disrespect for that

object. Since a purse

holds money, the

belief goes, you’re

snubbing those funds

if you place them on

the ground.

SUPERSTITION: A cricket in the house is good luck, so don’t ever kill one. WHERE IT CAME FROM: The cricket’s rise

to lucky-charm status may have evolved

from its chirping abilities. It was thought

their singing could predict the weather,

changes in luck, or even the arrival

of friends. Their harmless nature also

earned them a place of welcome, at least

as far as insects go, inside the home.

sorta bad!

WRITTEN BY JESSICA DODELL-FEDER AND SARAH GROSSBART

BOTTOM LINE:

…to let your kid play with a phone at the

dinner table?A: It’s never a good idea to let your little one spend all

of dinner playing games, whether you’re at home or in a

restaurant. “The last thing you want your child to do is check

out for the entire meal,” says Robin Wells, president of Etiquette

Manor, a Miami-based etiquette school. “Even 5-year-olds

should have the self-discipline to put up with a few minutes of

boredom.” That said, if you’re spending most of dinner talking

about something he won’t understand, you could give him a

phone break for a few minutes. But if your child is older than

10, says Wells, he’s out of luck. At that age, he should be able to

sit through a whole meal without needing a distraction.

A: Nice as it is to pare

down your cleaning caddy,

don’t treat glass cleaner

like an all-purpose answer.

Although it’s great for shining

up windows, glass cleaner is

high in ammonia, which can

etch or dull granite and marble

and even wear away laminate

if it’s not wiped off completely,

says Melissa Homer, chief

cleaning officer for MaidPro,

a national housecleaning

service. It also lacks a

disinfecting agent, which

is essential for cleaning any

surface that comes in contact

with food. “A multipurpose

solution that disinfects is

a better choice for granite,

marble, laminate, and most

other materials,” says Homer.

how bad is it…

BOTTOM LINE:

A: Although most states

won’t penalize you, resist the

temptation to toss a done-for

bulb. Eventually it’ll end up

in a compactor or landfill,

where it will likely break.

Once that happens, the bulb

releases a tiny amount of

mercury, which is toxic to

people and animals, into the

air or water. “While it’s a very

small amount, it’s still better

to recycle a CFL,” says Molly

Hooven, a spokesperson for

the Environmental Protection

Agency. So bring your bulbs

to a home improvement

center or waste collection

agency—many will handle the

recycling for you.

BOTTOM LINE:pretty bad!

BOTTOM LINE:pretty bad!

…to feed birds at the park?A: Think twice before

you offer sandwich crusts

to a duck or pigeon. Bread,

crackers, and other “people

food” provide little in the way

of nutrition, and they could

hurt your feathered friends’

habitat. Repeated feedings

can draw a large number of

birds to the area, and all the

droppings they leave behind

will contaminate the spot.

“It can throw off a park’s

ecosystem if lots of birds

are defecating in a pond or

pecking at the grass,” says

Mitch Murdock, natural areas

manager for the Chicago Park

District. Also, any uneaten

morsels could attract less

adorable wildlife, like rats. If

you and the kiddos still want

to feed animals, a petting zoo

is your best bet.

…to pull out your gray hairs?A: While it’s not true that

two grays will grow back for

each one you pluck, you’ll

do more harm than good

if you tweeze or yank out

those silvery strands. The

hair that takes its place will

also be gray, and repeated

tugging could permanently

damage the hair follicle,

says New York City–based

dermatologist Meghan

O’Brien, M.D. There’s also

a chance that the strand

may not grow back. If you

absolutely can’t stand the

little sucker, cut the hair

as close to your scalp as

possible. It’s not a permanent

solution, but it’ll eliminate

the gray for at least a month

or two. And if you’re dealing

with more than a few strands,

either bite the bullet and dye

your ’do, or learn to love your

salt-and-pepper look.

Got any quackers?

BOTTOM LINE:

for most rugs

for cotton rugs

…to not use a rug pad on hardwood floors? A: A rug pad is a must, and

not just because it’ll prevent

your sisal from sliding.

“When you step on a rug, you

create friction between its

backing and the wood, as if

you were using sandpaper,”

says Tom Jennings, a vice

president at the World Floor

Covering Association. This

will mar your floor’s finish

and cause your rug to wear

prematurely. “You may see

the design fade or become

distorted after a few years,

especially in high-traffic

areas,” Jennings says. The

exception? If your rug is

cotton, which usually doesn’t

have an abrasive backing.

HOW TO

Rent a carpet cleaner for about $25 a day plus the solution (go to rugdoctor

.com for locations). Or save in the long run and buy one (you can find a good

model for less than $200). To start, tackle stains with a pretreatment solution,

says Lou Manfredini, a national home improvement expert and TV and radio

host. Next, mix hot water with the recommended amount of cleaning solution,

and pour the formula into the machine. Beginning at the room’s far corner, push

the vacuum forward to release the cleaning mix, then pull it back to extract dirt

and moisture. Wait until the rug is completely dry before walking on it.

when was the last time you…

…checked the fit

on your dog’s collar?

Every two weeks for

the first six months of a growing

puppy’s life, then once a month

after that.

A dog’s neck is delicate, and a too-

tight collar could cause skin irritation,

so a proper fit is important, says

Gerardo Perez-Camargo, D.V.M., Ph.D., a

veterinarian with Purina. Check your pup’s collar

while he’s standing on all four paws—you should

be able to slip two fingers inside the collar and

move them easily. The collar can feel tighter

when your dog’s sitting, so double-check that

it’s not too snug in that position, too.

The just-right temp for a fridge is between 38°F and 40°F,

while a freezer should be 0°F, says Sub-Zero representative

Chandler Nault. If you have an electronic display and it’s

not reading cold enough, call a pro for a repair. If your

fridge has a dial with numbers or an arrow, pick up a fridge

thermometer (about $5, hardware stores) for an accurate read.

…checked your fridge and freezer

settings?

Once a month,

especially if yours

has a dial, which may get moved

accidentally.

Point out two exits in each room (maybe a door and a window), says Dayna

Hilton, executive director of the Keep Kids Fire Safe Foundation. Make sure

there are metal escape ladders in each upstairs bedroom that adults and older

kids know how to use, and designate a meeting spot outside. Then,

imagining there’s a fire, practice the drill: Feel the door with the

back of your hand to check if it’s hot—if it were, you’d need to use a

different exit. Crawl out on your hands and knees—the air would be

cooler and less smoky down low. Then go to your meeting spot.

Twice a year.…held

a family fire

drill?

Thank the weather for wearing down your blades: Heat can warp the rubber,

while icy buildup can cause them to crack, says Dan Ramsey, author of The

Complete Idiot’s Guide to Trouble-Free Car Care. To replace, prop up a wiper

arm and locate the plastic stopper holding the blade in place. Press the

stopper, unhook the blade and slide it off the arm, then slide in the new blade

(about $15 each at auto parts stores). Swivel the wiper arm until the blade clicks

in place, then set the wiper back on the glass. Repeat with the other blade.

At least once

a year.

…tossed out old

makeup?

“Lip products and mascara are where you need to be most vigilant, since

they breed bacteria the fastest,” says Jessica Wu, M.D., a Los Angeles–based

dermatologist. Don’t share those with friends, and replace them frequently

to avoid infection—every three months for gloss and mascara, and every six

months for lipsticks. Liquid foundation should also get refreshed every six

months, or sooner if the texture or smell changes; powders like blush and

eyeshadow can last a year.

Every three

months to a year,

depending on the type.

Ketchup bottles have an expiration date, which is usually 15 months

from the time of production. But once the seal has been broken, it

will last about six months in the refrigerator. If you’re an infrequent

condiment user, you may want to note the date you opened it on

the label. Some bottles have a “best by” date instead. You won’t

necessarily get sick if you use it after that, but it may not taste as

fresh, says Frances Largeman-Roth, R.D., a Brooklyn-based

food and health expert. Also, if your ketchup has gone

from bright red to brownish-red, it’s time to ditch it.

Every six months (once it’s

open).

overflow. What’s the best

way to clear them?

CHIP SAYS: IT DEPENDS.

I always tell people that if you

want your gutters to flow

freely, you have to clean

them by hand from

a ladder. If you’re

not comfortable

climbing up

high, hire a

professional

gutter

cleaning

service. If

you want to

go the DIY route,

place your ladder

at one end of your

roof and climb up so that

the gutter is right in front of

you. Wearing work gloves and

using a small spade, scoop

out any debris or leaves and

drop them on the ground.

(You can clean up the piles

at the end.) Once you’ve

CHIP’S PICK

Whether you’re tackling a major

renovation or simply looking to

refresh the look of your bathroom,

fi xtures play a feature role. The

right choices do more than just

add style to your space; they

maximize the latest innovations

with designs that elevate every

day—like the ones we feature

here from MOEN, available at

The Home Depot.

■ FAUCET FACTS The single most important element

in any bathroom is the sink faucet. It

gets the most use and is the focal point

of the room. With a choice of center-set

or widespread models, and an array

of fi nishes, you’re sure to fi nd one that

refl ects your personal taste.

Look for one that also offers superior

performance—like Moen’s AshvilleTM line.

The sleek, timeless style is enhanced

by Microban® antimicrobial protection

to help prevent growth of damaging

bacteria. Shown here in Mediterranean

Bronze center-set and in Brushed Nickel

widespread. The latter features Moen’s

exclusive Spot Resist fi nish, which mini-

mizes fi ngerprints and water spots to

wipe clean easily.

What benefi t do I get from products

BATHROOM STYLE

■ SHOWER SPOTLIGHT One of the easiest ways to elevate your

bath experience is with the right shower-

head. Look for one that offers comfort and

water conservation, like the Moen Ashville.

Its generous 9" diameter provides excep-

tional water coverage, while its Invigorain

technology channels water with more spray

power than most rain showers. A PosiTemp

pressure-balancing valve maintains water

pressure and controls temperature,

ensuring comfort.

■ RAISING THE BAR Towel racks complete your bathroom

by providing a convenient place to dry a

wet towel or by offering an opportunity to

display a decorative one. A ring makes the

ideal holder for hand towels and should be

placed adjacent to the sink, while larger

bars accommodate bath towels.

“This guest bedroom is in the home of a

does that better than purple. It’s also gender-

neutral, so any guest feels right at home.”

“If you want your house to get

noticed, go big with red. This home

was already popular, but now it’s

even more of a neighborhood

landmark. I love this shade because

it manages to be both exciting and

traditional, which isn’t an easy

combo to achieve. Keep all the other

details on the house simple and

you’ve got yourself a winner.”

“This powder room features lots

of natural wood and stone. When

I was thinking about a paint color,

turquoise made perfect sense. After

all, turquoise is a natural material

too. Since the wood and stone are

matte, I picked semigloss for the

paint. When you’re choosing paint,

consider contrasting colors and

finishes. It’s a simple trick.”

“The piano is one of the first things you see when

you walk inside our home, so we wanted a color

that we don’t take ourselves too seriously. I used a

dark wax on top to give the green a richer tone.”

a formal dining room, so I

wanted the cabinets to feel

One’s hot, the other’s cool. One’s energetic, the other’s serene. When

Suction power is measured in Air Watts and, as you can see, Dyson DC41 has twice as much suction at the cleaner head than any other vacuum.* Its cleaner head self-adjusts to seal in that suction across carpets and hard floors. fun decorating

HGTV Star judge Vern Yip shares his best shopping, sizing, and arranging tips.

area rugs1 To figure out your ideal rug

size, measure the room’s width and

length, then subtract two to three

feet from each dimension. The

result is what you should aim for. 2 A good rule of thumb when

deciding where to put a rug: Make

sure at least the front two legs

of each piece of furniture in the

space sit on the rug. Otherwise it

will look like it’s floating. 3 Nothing beats a wool rug. Yes,

it’s the most expensive kind, but

it feels the softest, has the richest

colors, and wears the best. If wool

is out of your price range, try

nylon or a synthetic blend for a

similar look that’s just as durable.4 Natural materials such as sisal,

jute, and sea grass are affordable

and go with any color scheme.

Just keep in mind, they look

casual and can feel scratchy. A

wool or nylon rug that mimics the

nubby texture of natural fiber will

be kinder to your feet. 5 Flat-woven kilim and dhurrie

rugs, which are usually made

of cotton or wool, are a fun way

to add pattern to a room. But

because they’re thin, they don’t

hold up as well as rugs with a pile.

Soft on your feet and can be hosed

down—great for outdoors!

luluandgeorgia.com

Poire 5' x 7'6" polypropylene rug, $339,

homedecorators.com

Indigo Geo 5' x 8' cotton

dhurrie, $199, westelm.com

Save them for low-traffic areas,

or layer one over a sturdier rug. 6 Standard rug sizes range

from 3 feet by 5 feet to 9 feet by

12 feet. If you need a larger one

or have an oddly shaped room,

consider getting a piece of carpet

cut to size and bound. I did that

in my kids’ playroom and paid

hundreds less than I would have

for a regular rug in a similar size. 7 Don’t forget a rug pad! It

will prolong the life of your rug

and the floor underneath. I like

polypropylene pads, which are

cheap and stand up to foot traffic.

DID YOU KNOWthat Chronic Dry Eye (CDE) is a disease with potential consequences for your eyes?

What is CDE disease?

CDE occurs when your eyes don’t make the right quality or quantity of natural tears (called the tear fi lm) to keep your eyes moist and protected. This can lead to dry spots on the front surface of the eye, called the cornea.

TALK TO YOUR EYE DOCTOR about your symptoms

ASK QUESTIONS about your options

CDE may impact your ability to do both work and leisure-related activities

How do I know if I have CDE?Only an eye doctor can tell you if you have CDE. Although they may vary from person to person, common CDE symptoms include:

» Dryness

» An itchy sensation

» A stinging, burning sensation

» A gritty or sandy sensation

» Sensitivity to light

» Excessive tearing

» Blurry vision or diffi culty seeing at night

Many people with CDE fi nd that their symptoms don’t go away over time. Recognizing how these symptoms affect you will help you understand the true impact CDE is having on you.

How does CDE disease impact my activities? The symptoms of CDE can impact many things you do that involve your eyes. Think about how CDE may be limiting your ability to do both work and leisure-related activities. And consider how many times you need to stop what you’re doing to use artifi cial tears.

Recurring dry eye symptoms can cause increased discomfort while:

» Reading

» Driving at night

» Watching TV

» Working on the computer

» Wearing contact lenses

What damage may happen to my eyes if I have CDE?If your eyes don’t make or maintain the right quality or quantity of tears, your tear fi lm may become unstable and break down. This can create dry spots and cause irritation on the front surface of your eye, and may develop into CDE. Over time, CDE may get worse and have potential consequences for your eyes, including:

» Damage to the eye surface

» Increased risk of eye infection

» Effects on your vision

What can I do if I have questions about CDE disease?Talk to your eye doctor today. The good news is that there are treatment options available for CDE.

The only way to fi nd out if you have CDE is to talk to your eye doctor. If you have questions about CDE disease, make an appointment with your eye doctor.

1. Remove the drawers and unscrew the knobs. 2. Paint the dresser. We started with an unfinished wood dresser and gave it a drybrush look. (If the dresser you’re making over is already painted or stained, see “Prep Your Dresser,” page 116.) Dip just the tip of the brush into latex paint. Dab the bristles on a paper towel, then brush the paint onto the dresser with quick, light strokes so the wood grain shows through. Paint the entire frame, including the legs, using this method. 3. While the paint dries, measure the dimensions of your drawer fronts. Cut the decal sheets into pieces a little bigger than each drawer front and stick them on, smoothing out air bubbles with an old credit card. Wrap any excess around the edges—you’ll still be able to close the drawers easily.4. From inside the drawer, use a nail or pushpin to poke a hole through the decal sheet where each knob goes. Screw in new knobs, and slide the drawers back into the dresser.D

Use sample

pots of paint for this

project—you only need a

little for each stripe.

1. Remove the drawers and unscrew the knobs. 2. Use a small roller to paint the drawer fronts and the entire frame with one color of latex paint. Let dry, then slide the drawers back into the dresser.3. Tape off your first stripe: To make sure it’s straight, use a measuring tape to make pencil marks every few inches, starting at the back of the dresser’s top and working down the front. Apply delicate-surface painter’s tape along those marks. Repeat with another piece of tape, running it parallel to the first piece. Use a utility knife to slice the tape between the drawers, pressing down the edges.

4. Paint the first stripe with a brush. Peel off the tape while the paint is still wet. While the stripe dries, tape off and paint another one a few inches away. Repeat with as many stripes as you want, eyeballing the distance between each one. You can even paint thin stripes over wide ones—just make sure the first coat is dry before applying tape.5. Place paper cups upside down and poke the drawer knobs through the tops to hold them in place. Paint each knob the same color as the stripe it matches up with on the dresser. Let dry, then screw them back in.

1. Remove the drawers and unscrew the knobs. 2. If your dresser is unfinished, prime the frame and drawer fronts (otherwise the raw wood will soak up too much decoupage glue). Let dry.3. Cut the paper—we used two rolls of wrapping paper—into various strips and squares.4. Roll or brush Mod Podge matte finish onto the dresser frame and the back of the paper, working with one piece at a time. Stick the paper to the frame, overlapping the edges. Smooth out any air bubbles with an old credit card. You can also use the card to push the paper into any nooks and crannies in the wood. Roll or brush a coat of Mod Podge over the paper, and let dry.5. Following the instructions in step 4, decoupage the drawer fronts. Let dry, then slide the drawers back into the dresser. 6. Paint the dresser’s legs with latex paint that’s the same color you’ll use for the monogram. 7. Attach loops of painter’s tape to the back of the stencil, and press it on the dresser. Paint inside the stencil, immediately remove it, and let dry. 8. From inside the drawer, use a nail or pushpin to poke a hole through the paper where each knob goes. Screw in new knobs.

prep your dresserWe started with an unfinished dresser. You can find similar styles at youfinishfurniture .com and goodwoodfurniture.com. If you already have a painted or wood-stained dresser you want to redo, here’s how to prep it:

1 CLEAN IT Wipe the dresser with dish soap and water. Use a rag and some

Goo Gone to remove any stubborn residue.

2 SAND THE WOOD Starting with coarse sandpaper and working up to

fine sandpaper, rough up the finish or paint so that new paint or decoupage glue can

stick to the surface. After sanding, wipe the dresser clean with a tack cloth.

3 FILL IN ANY NICKS OR HOLES Spread wood putty over the dings with

a spackle knife. Let dry, then sand so the patches lie flush with the wood. Wipe clean with a tack cloth.

with two teenage sons and an 85-pound yellow Lab, Jay and Barbin Graham were

craving more space in their 2,600-square-foot home of 15 years. But when they got

an estimate for an addition—$350,000—they had sticker shock. “You could build a

new house for that!” says Barbin, who owns a sign-manufacturing company with Jay. Instead,

they found a way to add room for a lot less money: Replace the back deck with a 500-square-foot

screened-in porch designed as an outdoor living room, kitchen, and dining area. Total cost?

$65,000. Plenty of prime features—pine floors, vaulted ceilings, a brick fireplace, a built-in gas

grill, and weather-resistant furniture—have made it the family’s favorite spot. “The boys and their

friends even sleep out there sometimes,” says Barbin. “It’s like we added an extra bedroom, too.”

BEFORE YOU ADD A SCREENED-IN PORCH

Top tips from Elbow Room’s Chip Wade.

● Invest in good heavyweight screens that have tight-fitting aluminum frames.

● For floors, consider composite decking. It won’t splinter like wood can, and its screws typically don’t loosen up.

● If you live in an area with cold winters, get a portable infrared heater. It warms large spaces quickly, and you can just plug it in when you need it.

● Even if you don’t plan to install speakers or a TV right away, have an electrician pre-wire for them during construction. It’s a lot cheaper than having to cut holes and run wires after the porch is built.

here are some houses where certain pieces of furniture—even entire

rooms—are off-limits to the kids. But at Michelle and Dave Kohanzo’s

Barrington, IL, home, it’s just the opposite. Maybe that’s because

Michelle is one of the creative minds behind the children’s design

company The Land of Nod, where color and fun reign supreme. The

four Kohanzo kids, ages 6 to 15, are not only allowed to toss their feet

over the side of an armchair, but they also have a say in what comes into the house

and what doesn’t. “We share every bit of space, so I’m happy for the whole family to

weigh in,” says Michelle. “My daughter, Emily, loves to shop with me, and she’s not

afraid to veto something if she doesn’t like it. Dave and the boys have plenty of their

own ideas too.” The result is a happy-go-lucky style where grown-up taste and kid-

inspired spunk live happily together.

To balance the coziness, she had the lampshades covered with edgy black Orla Kiely wallpaper. She liked it so much she covered a wall with it too.

amy Corcell can’t resist a good junk shop. She’s also a flea market fan, a

Craigslist connoisseur, and a discount website devotee. So when it came

time for this stay-at-home mom to decorate her Cashiers, NC, home,

she shunned the idea of one-stop shopping and began gathering furniture and

accessories from a heap of sources. “It became a game—what cheap piece could I

score and what could I do with it to make it look fabulous?” says Amy. Two of her

friends, designers Hooper Patterson and Ann White Schutte, got in on the challenge

too, scouring everything from country antiques fairs to big-name mall stores to fill

up the house for Amy, her husband, Mike, and their three children. The designers

also took some of the Corcells’ older pieces and updated them with new fabrics and

a fresh coat of paint. In the end the team pulled together a home that’s anything but

matchy-matchy, says Amy. “We landed on the perfect mix of comfortable, colorful,

and completely one-of-a-kind.”

KITCHEN The kitchen’s star is its island, which can seat up to six. Harrison, 5, Hayes,

4, and Camille, 2, eat all their meals there. “And when our friends come over, that’s where we end up,” says Amy. The barn-wood top is coated in high-gloss paint (for a similar look, try Gray Owl by Benjamin Moore), so it’s easy to clean with a damp cloth. The oak base is Forest Hills Green by Benjamin Moore.

A flea market steal at $10, this 1960s wood side table has a hammered copper top.

LIVING ROOM The white linen Robin Bruce sofa is “so comfortable, and best of all, it has a 10-year warranty on stains,” says Amy. The big gray flannel chair is neutral too, so Hooper and Ann brought in color and pattern with a leopard-print ottoman and coral armchairs. The built-in cubbies hold decorative accessories, books, and auction buys. To keep them from looking cluttered, Amy filled half of the cubbies with just one item each.

BEDROOM “We used to live in London, so that inspired the design for Hayes’ bedroom,” says Amy. She chose a navy, light blue, and red color scheme and added some British accents, like Union Jack pillows and framed pages from the book This Is London. Hayes (below, right) and Harrison regularly roughhouse, so Amy played it safe with mostly inexpensive, easy-to-replace pieces from Target and IKEA, and a striped wool rug from HomeGoods. kitchen chronicles

when we set out to find the

most embarrassing kitchen in

America, we expected to see

some shocking spaces. But Susan and Hansen

Lee’s kitchen still took us by surprise. It was not

only outdated—cabinets from the ’50s, dingy

countertops, and (holy cock-a-doodle-doo!)

rooster wallpaper—but also dysfunctional. The

dishwasher was kaput, the ovens opened only six

inches before crashing into a door frame, there

was no space for a fridge, and the family didn’t

have a place to sit together for dinner. When our

contest winners bought the Woodland Hills, CA,

house last December, a kitchen overhaul was at

the top of their to-do list. But that plan got put

on hold when their leaky roof needed replacing.

“For months we ate takeout most nights, with the

kids at a little play table and Hansen and I at the

counter,” says Susan. A style resuscitation was in

order, so after hatching a plan, HGTV Star winner

Tiffany Brooks and contractor Jeff Devlin, host of

DIY Network’s I Hate My Bath, got to work.

organized pantry Before the makeover, storage was scarce. “There was barely a place to put a box of cereal,“ says Tiffany. “So in the old oven space, we built 16-inch-deep cubbies with cabinets underneath.” The sliding barn door is from Etsy. Tiffany stained it blue (Wedgewood by Behr).

updated floors “I love hardwood floors so much I’d put one in my shower if I could!” says Susan. So out came the old tiles, and in went hickory wood planks. For the kids’ nook, Tiffany cut Flor tiles into 9-inch-by-9-inch squares and laid down a checkered pattern.

kids’ nook ”All kids like forts, and this is our version,” says Jeff of the girls’ space that’s a step up from the floor. The benches and Plexiglas-top table open up to store art supplies and toys. The cushions are made with indoor/outdoor material from Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft.

Just about every weekend of the year, Josh,

far left, and Brent invite friends over to their

200-year-old farmhouse in upstate New

York. That’s a lot of hungry mouths to feed.

It’s also the perfect excuse for the couple

to try out new recipes. One of their biggest

hits originated from a quirky snack Josh’s

grandmother used to make: cornbread

soaked in buttermilk and sprinkled with

sugar. With a few tweaks, the two turned

Grandma’s recipe into a multipurpose dish

that can work as a rich side—”serve it with

turkey or roasted chicken,” suggests Josh—

as dessert drizzled with maple syrup and

heavy cream, or even as breakfast. “People

love something sweet with their coffee in

the morning,” says Brent. “We serve it with

fresh fruit and yogurt when we want to

lighten it up.”

Josh and Brent’s latest book is The Beekman

1802 Heirloom Dessert Cookbook.

buttermilk cornbread puddingSERVES 8

4 tablespoons unsalted butter (1⁄2 stick), melted, plus more to grease the pan

1⁄2 cup corn kernels, fresh or thawed from frozen

3⁄4 cup coarse cornmeal

QUICK TIPAdd a hint of

citrus—sprinkle with 2 tablespoons

of orange zest before serving.

Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge, aka the Cooking Channel’s Fabulous Beekman Boys, share a fall favorite.

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Butter

a 9-by-9-inch baking dish.

2. In a food processor or using a hand

mixer, pulse the corn kernels, cornmeal,

flour, baking powder, baking soda, and

salt until combined and the kernels have

started to break down.

3. Add the butter, eggs, buttermilk, and maple

syrup and process until well incorporated.

Pour the batter into the dish and bake until

set around the edges but slightly custardy in

the center, about 35 minutes.

HANDY COOKING TOOLThis touch-pad-controlled processor can chop, mix, knead, and slice—all with a quiet motor.

Crotons are tropical plants, but you can still grow them

in the fall in most areas if you keep them protected from

the wind and harsh weather. With their glossy, golden

leaves—splashed with red, green, and orange—they add

zing to lavender mums.

They’re pretty on their own—but better with a partner!

This hydrangea has giant, leathery foliage that looks

like oak leaves and goes from green to purple, orangey

bronze, or deep red in the fall. Its poufy white flowers

eventually become dusty pink. Plant it in a flower bed

and add a complementary border of pink mums.

WRITTEN BY LINDA VATER

Although ornamental peppers aren’t nearly as tasty

as garden bell peppers, their shiny green foliage and

surprisingly pretty red, yellow, orange, and purple fruits

pop against white. For a quintessential fall arrangement,

plant the peppers and mums along with some creeping

Jenny in a pot or window box.

in the yard

With its green, gold, and pinkish-red leaves, Nandina

‘Firepower’ practically glows against yellow or gold-color

mums. This bamboo-like plant reaches about two feet tall,

so try it in a container with a cluster of low-lying mums.

Hot pink blooms and rounded burgundy leaves on thick,

arching stems make ‘Purple Pixie’ a dramatic partner for

mounds of vibrant orange mums. If the fall weather is cool

and moist, this variety of Chinese fringe flower should

produce a second flush of flowers.

Pair mums with these colorful fall bloomers.

Purple heart’s mauve leaves, and its pinkish-purple

flowers that sprout throughout summer and into fall, are

a fun contrast to ruby-hued mums. The plant reaches

only 10 inches tall, so spill it over a hanging basket’s sides

with clusters of the mums.

—Vern Yip, HGTV Star

—Meg Caswell, Meg’s Great

Rooms

Decorate small brown paper bags with washi tape, fill them with a mix of candy, then tape them closed. Each trick-or-treater gets a cute little package to open.

—Dina Manzo, Dina’s Party

It’s Halloween!

way to hand out candy?

Try this clever but not overly

complicated idea: Have a black canvas tote bag embroidered with

the word boo and fill it with mini candy bars.

—Chip Wade, Elbow Room
