    Welcome to one o the most dangerous nations in the world: Diamond Coast. Guns, cash, andsome sly words can go a long way in a place like this. There are no rules in a place like this andremember that - or a person o your moral stature that means there are plenty o opportunities

    or money and power. The brie crash course that ollows will educate you in the ways o ahired gun but there is much more to being a soldier o ortune than the inormation containedon these pages.

    Pay attention to detail, shoot rst and eectively, and remember that money talks louder andmore eectively than anything else in Diamond Coast a war torn land living on the Jagged

    tHe Games ConCept

    Hired Guns: Jagged Edge is a game divided at its core into two main modes: a pausable realtime strategic mode reerred to as the Global Map and a turn-based tactical mode.

    The strategic component o Hired Guns is a map oDiamond Coast - the country where you have beenhired to eliminate the brutal dictator in charge. Thisobjective is initially what you have been hired to do,but things can change quickly or a skilled mercenarylike yoursel. Keep your options open because there aremany competing interests in Diamond Coast and someo them may serve your purposes better than ollowingyour initial employer.

    Gaining the avor o another action requires you to speak to them in tactical mode and thencomplete an objective using a combination o the strategic and tactical modes. You cant make

    riends with everyone at the same time, but you can betray anyone you wish at any time.Each action carries with them their own bonuses and advantages and the games ending canchange drastically depending on your standing with the various groups when you completethe game.

    Ater hiring some initial mercenaries, you can assign them to dierent squads on the GlobalMap. The squad is basic entity on the Global Map, you can only move your soldiers rom area toarea when in squads (though it is possible to have a one-person squad). You can order a squadto another area even when the game is paused but the squad will not begin traveling until thegame time is unpaused. You can pause the action on the Global Map whenever you want toreorganize things or order squads to dierent locations. You can also increase the game speed

    to up to 4 times aster than normal time but be careul when you do this. Enemy squads willalso be roaming the country and they can attack you without much notice. Watch the GlobalMap careully when you are running at a high game speed.

    There also are medical devices and tools in your vehicle or the Doctor and Mechanic rolesso you can heal soldiers and repair things when on the Global Map (Note: healing and repairingcan ONLY be done on the Global Map). Notice that to move mercenaries through the Global Maproads are used. The vehicle you will start out with can hold all your mercs and their equipment.You cannot use the vehicle to transport cargo, however. Also, you can try to capture the Airportwhich is heavily deended. I you do manage to take this area, it will give you access to achopper which can quickly transport squads to any area youve discovered without using

    roads. This means you can fy behind enemy positions and attack them with multiple squadsrom multiple directions. Delicious!

    By clicking the attack button in an enemy-held area you can enter into tacticalmode and ght the enemy directly. You initially start o in deployment modewhere you can put your mercs anywhere in the purple area highlighted on themap. Also, note that you will only be able to deploy on the side o the maprom which you approached the area. Some directions are better than others

    or assaulting an enemy area. Ater completing deployment mode the game will play in realtime until an enemy is spotted or the enemy spots you - at this point you are in combatmode. Sometimes this will take a ew minutes o real time mode beore entering combat or

    sometimes the enemy will spot you immediately, so it is not guaranteed that you will alwayshave a chance to move your soldiers in real time. Make sure you plan or this - deploy well!

    In combat mode every character on the map moves by an action point/turn-based system.Moving, shooting, reloading, and any other action costs action points. Once a character is outo action points they can not do anything else or the reminder o the turn. Ater youve issued

    all the orders you want or youve run out o AP you can end the turn. At this point another NPCside will take their turn. Note that civilians and neutral characters move separately rom yourenemies, as do any hired garrison soldiers. Characters will not always start with the sameamount o AP or every turn. Being wounded, losing your breath, and other actors can subtractrom a characters AP beore they even have the chance to receive orders.

    At the tactical stage youll be able to talk to the locals and other characters as well, but only in

    real-time mode. When mousing over a NPC, the cursor changes its shape automatically to ormlips. Ater clicking on a NPC with the lips icon youll be able to choose a dialogue line. Theresponse and the chances o a successul result o the conversation depend on both the NPCyoure talking to and some o your mercenarys attributes. Strength, Wisdom, Leadership, andother attributes all impact how a conversation will play out. The dialogue line is also color-coded to denote the nature o the response. For example, a red-colored reply is a threat and it

    should be spoken by a very strong ghter who may intimidate the NPC. A green reply is awise reply and may convince an NPC to work with you i the merc you chose to speak withthe NPC has a high enough Wisdom rating. White replies are neutral and are not aected asmuch by the attributes o the mercenary who is speaking.

    Sound simple enough? Lets look at the two core components o Hired Guns separately:

    Global map

    The strategic portion o Hired Guns takes place rom the Global Map pictured below.

    There are many thingsyou can do when in theGlobal Map screen likemoving your squads,equipping and healingyour mercenaries, buyingnew weapons, and a lotmore. Some importantactions you can do romthe Global Map include:

    initial psyCH. evaluation (avatar Creation)

    When rst embarking on your mission toDiamond Coast, you will have the ability toaccess a psychological test that will try topaint an accurate picture o exactly whatkind o mercenary you are. You can do thisevaluation only once initially but it will createa character which is supposed to representyou in the game world. This is quite anadvantage beyond getting your lovely muginto this ruthless jungle, since youre selemployed you dont need to be paid everyday (so its like a ree mercenary) and youcan rate your skills however you wish.

    There are limits to how much grandeur youcan paint yousel with, however, as you can only rate your skills up to a certain level beore theyare maxed out. To get your skills higher ater youve reached the initial rating limit you willhave to improve the old ashioned way practice! Also bear in mind that you can rate yourselas 0 or some skills but that makes any prociency with that eld near impossible. I you arerated as 0 or a special role like medic you will not be able to perorm that role at all.

    Hire merCenaries

    Using your laptop you can access theIMA website and hire new operativesor your private mini-army. You can reada mercenarys biography, look at theirattributes, and examine the equipment they

    own by clicking on their portrait. Click thecall button below their portrait to try to hirethem. I they agree to work or you, you willhave a choice o whether to purchase theirservices with their equipment or without(you will have to equip them yoursel i youhire them without their equipment).

    Not all mercenaries will agree to work withyou initially. Many experienced soldiers willonly work with established and reputable agents o destruction. Additionally, not all mercenaries

    play nice together. Some mercs simply detest each other so be sure to read every personsbio to see who they do (and do not) work well with. In some cases hiring one mercenary willprohibit you rom working with another.

    Mercenaries cost money, so pay attention to how much it will cost to pay your army daily. At12 midnight every day all mercs working or you will require payment or their services. I you

    are short on cash, any mercenary not paid will leave your army and automatically withdraw themoney theyre owed anyway. Be sure to manage your nances careully!

    manaGe and maintain equipment

    The ammo screen (the B button on the Global map) shows all the items available at thisareas storage depot. Bear in mind, though, that the items pictured in the ammo screen are onlythe items you or your squad picked up or looted at the end o a battle any items still inboxes or crates must be manually discovered and picked up to be listed here. The ammoscreen lets you examine the spoils youve just obtained, change a mercenarys loadout, equipweapons with enhancements, reload weapons, top o clips, and more. Achieving a goodbalance o repower and weight between your soldiers is important or success so do notignore this screen. Make sure that your mercs are ready or battle beore you click the Playbutton on the Global Map because i an enemy attacks you by surprise you will not have timeto swap out weapons and equipment beore the ghting starts.

    manaGe your squads

    The squad management screen (the button S on the global map) is useul inassigning your employees to squads, designating a special role or them, and ringthe dead weight you are sick o wasting your money on. Remember that you can

    only move your soldiers rom an already staed squadron to another when bothsquads are in the same area. You can always create a new squad in any sectorby moving the mercenarys portrait to an empty squadrons slots. As part o yourcontract with your employer, you cannot hire more than 18 mercenaries spreadover 6 groups (with a maximum o 6 persons per group).

    As mentioned beore, you can also designate special roles or your mercenaries when they aresitting idly in the Global Map mode. These special roles are very important in keeping both yoursquad and their equipment in good shape. The primary special roles are:

    Doctor - A mercenary in a doctor role greatly increases the healing rate o other mercenarieswho are designated as Patients. Only mercenaries with medical skills can be assigned the

    doctor role. Higher skill ratings increase healing speed.Trainer - A mercenary in a trainer role will improve the skills they are best at or anymercenary in the Student role in the squad. Only healthy mercenaries can be a trainer andthere is only one allowed per squad. As a trainer teaches skills to others their leadershipattribute increases as well.

    Mechanic - A mercenary in a mechanic role will repair broken or overused items. Equipmentwill slowly degrade over time and the chances o a weapon jam or other malunction willincrease the more the item is used without proper maintenance. To prevent this, you shouldrepair equipment and weapons regularly by using the mercenary with the highest Mechanicsvalue in the squad.

    buy Weapons and ammo

    You can also visit Dicky Jays weapon store rom your laptop where a variety o killinginstruments, armor, and other equipment is available.

    To purchase an item, click the green let arrow to move the purchase to your cart.Clicking the double arrow will purchase all the stock available o that particularitem. This is particularly useul when you want to buy 10 clips o ammo or a highcount o some other item. To complete the purchase click on the Cart tab at thebottom o the navigation pane and click Purchase. You will then be able to choose

    where your purchase will appear on the Global Map. The purchase will immediatelyappear at the appointed spot but bear in mind that only areas you control with atransportation hub are eligible or equipment delivery (i.e. Airport, Railway Station,Port, etc.).

    read your email and Journal

    Your email account is a vital source o inormation and oten times the only way your clients(and enemies) can get a hold o you. Read your mail requently and careully as various

    missions and opportunities will generally arise via email. Additionally, your journal is animportant database o your previous doings and mission progress. Any inormal conversationsyou have with people in tactical mode will also be commented on here. Read your journalcareully as well because details you may miss when speaking with someone generally appearhere. As a side note, make sure that you chat with as many neutral people as possible beorethe bullets start fying (the best way to do this is to return to the tactical mode o an area youve

    already captured). They may give you small bonuses or even an opportunity to make newpowerul allies

    taCtiCal mode

    This is where we separate the men rom the boys and where your mercenariesreally earn their pay. The tactical portion o the game takes place on a variety oully 3D (and destructible) settings ranging rom a massive dam, to a beachresort, to dense jungle, and beyond.

    To initiate the tacticalmode o an area clickthe attack button whichwill be pictured underphoto o area. When thetactical map o the areahas loaded the player willbe in deployment mode.In this mode players canposition their soldiers

    anywhere within the purpledeployment box. Playerscan also reload a mercsweapon, change theirstance, set their aimingpreerences, and perorm

    other basic tasks to save AP when the action starts. To change the location o a mercenarysimply select them (let click them or hit F1-F6) and then click within the purple highlightedarea to place the mercenary. I there are two or more squads under your command, use thecontrols above Mini-map to switch between each squad. The icon o the current squad is alsodisplayed there.

    Generally the side o the map you can deploy on corresponds to the direction rom which youapproached the territory in the Global Map. When deending a location, you can place yourmercenaries almost anywhere in the center o the map but it is helpul to note which directionthe enemy will attack rom to maximize your advantage.

    Your mercenaries can move around the area, climb up the towers, ladders, stairs, etc., talk topeople, and examine items like boxes, chests, etc. The game isplayed in the real-time until you detect an enemy (or an enemydetects you) at which point you enter combat mode. As said beore,in combat mode every character on the map moves by an actionpoint/turn-based system. Moving, shooting, reloading, and any otheraction costs action points. Once a character is out o action points

    they can not do anything else or the reminder o the turn. Ateryouve issued all the orders you want or youve run out o AP you canend the turn. At this point another NPC side will take their turn.     To move a selected soldier, move the cursor at the point you wantthem to go to and let-click once. Note that a double-click cancels

    the order, and the mercenary stops wherever they are - they do notreturn to their original position. By deault mercenaries move at arun. This is their maximum speed, but it makes plenty o noise and rapidly drains their stamina.Use mercenary panel to change between modes (Q - lie down/crawl, W - crouch, E - walk,R - run). Also, be sure to pay attention to what your mercs tell you. They will let you knowwhen they hear something, sight an enemy, experience a gun jam, or any other signicantevent.

    The game will return to real time mode when several turns have elapsed and neither side hasdetected one another. Be careul, though, because even though you can move your soldiers inreal time, this doesnt mean that the area is clear. You can be ambushed very easily i you move

    your mercenaries orward too carelessly.When all the enemies are gone (either fed or killed) rom thearea you have captured it. You will know this rom the cheers oyour mercs and a corresponding message that appears on thescreen saying Sector Cleared.. To exit the area, click on the

    Exit button (the red eject arrow below the Mini-map).

    This is ar rom everything there is to combat. Since something like battle is innitely complexyou will most likely have to take your licks and learn to be a brutal warrior through experience(which more oten than not means getting shot a lot). There are two vital aspects o combatthat havent been touched on which will help you invaluably: aiming and healing. Listen up,these opposed sides o battle may just save your lie in a pinch:

    tHe aim Guru 5000

    The automatic aim designator, AIM GURU 5000, is located at thebottom-right corner o the GUI. It is useul or precise targeting orsharpshooters or simply setting a static location or a merc to shoot

    at every time they re. The operating principle behind the AIM GURU5000 is simple: a mercenary always targets at the part o bodymarked in AIM GURU 5000. This means that you wont have to useyour cursor to manually target where the bullet should land when youorder a mercenary to re. The AIM GURU 5000 res at the torso bydeault since its generally the best target to aim or.

    You can use the number pad to quickly designate a new target location:

    8 Head

    4 - Let Arm

    6 - Right Arm

    1 - Let Leg

    3 - Right Leg

    5 - Torso

    The 2 button on the number pad switches the auto scope o, allowing you to aim manually byusing the cursor. You can even aim at somebodys nger, i youre particularly sadistic

    HealtH and HealinG

    Scars look good on soldiers - though not every soldier will agreeto such adornments. When bullets start fying in combat modethe chances are pretty good that a ew o them are going to

    nd your mercenaries. A wounded mercenary will unction lesseectively and will lose AP or the next turn. I the wound gets tooserious the merc may even become incapacitated so make sureyou keep plenty o rst aid kits around. Its probably a good ideato have every merc carry a med kit so they can heal themselvesin a pinch. Using a medical kit does not take any special skills orabilities - just place the medikit in the mercs right hand, pressCTRL key, and let-click on the wounded soldier.

    I a merc takes a particularly well placed shot (a critical wound)or several bullets in close succession (their health drops below

    50%) they can start to bleed. I their health decreases to 15points or lower they enter a critical condition and shock ollows.At this point, the soldier is incapacitated and requires anothermerc to come by and stabilize them. Any team member canbandage their wounded companion. A kneeling posture isrequired to heal someone, so dont orget to count this changein position (rom standing to kneeling) when counting out yourAP or healing a soldier. Ater the soldier is bandaged, a red bar(health let) and a pink bar (bandage rate) are displayed on theirhealth indicator.

    I the critically wounded soldier was alone in your squad or all other mercenaries are alsocritically hit they all die. Additionally, critical wounds can irreversibly lower a mercs attributes.I this is the case, medicine wont help and the only way to restore the lost skill points is totrain long and hard. Ater exiting the tactical mode all wounded soldiers will be stabilizedautomatically in the Global Map and can begin to heal slowly. (Having a doctor merc with agood medical rating will speed the healing process along considerably.)

    useful tips

    Firing a weapon with triple burst will cause the gun to lurch upwards. Some1)

    weapons have more recoil than others but every weapon will naturally pushupwards when ring several rounds in close succession. Keep this in mind whenyou are engaging an enemy at close range. Aiming at your enemys head witha triple shot burst is not as eective as aiming at his leg and allowing the tripleburst to rake your target. Since your merc will naturally let the guns barrel moveupwards with each shot, chances are that the third bullet red in a triple burstwill be quite a bit higher than the enemys leg so you will have maximized thechances o having every round hit your target. It is not uncommon to have the rstbullet o a triple burst hit the enemys leg and the last bullet catch them squarein the nose.

    The missions you get oten make you return to an area youve already captured2) and explored. Depending on the current situation on the Global Map - some NPCsmay want to give you special opportunities and missions - some may want to slityour throat... Check you Journal, the results o each conversation are displayedthere.

    Shooting at the head is the quickest way o eliminating your enemy but it is also3)dicult to hit such a small target. When shooting at an armored enemy (a helmetcounts as armor) you may want to use armor piercing rounds or the bullet mayhave little eect even i it is a hit. I you shoot an enemy in the leg they will drop tothe ground in pain - this will buy you time to move into position or reload as it willtake the enemy time to get back on his eet and begin ring again. Arms, though

    unprotected, are hard to hit. The torso is easy to hit, but its usually protected withbody armor so use armor piercing rounds or keep plugging away at the armor andtry or a weak point.

    Strength, Wisdom, Leadership, and other attributes all impact how a conversation4)will play out. The dialogue lines used to communicate with a NPC are color-codedto denote the nature o the response. For example, a red-colored reply is a threatand it should be spoken by a very strong ghter who may intimidate the NPC. Agreen reply is a wise reply and may convince an NPC to work with you i themerc you chose to speak with the NPC has a high enough Wisdom rating. Whitereplies are neutral and are not aected as much by merc attributes.

    The weapons available or purchase will grow more potent and diverse as you5)progress through the game - but your enemys armaments will improve as well. Donot try to save money by avoiding purchasing new equipment. You will need everyextra ounce o repower you can buy when government soldiers start pouncingon your every move.

    The enemy will counterattack rom dierent areas and at dierent intervals. It6)is quite likely that its assault teams can take you by surprise as well. To preventthis, use the garrisons-or-hire which can be bought on the Global Map screen byclicking on the desired area and hiring them as an improvement to the area. Youcan hire these garrisons to deend an area by themselves or they can help you in

    tactical mode i you think the enemy is too strong to take on by yoursel. Thesegarrisons are really helpul and convenient but they are costly - try to deend areaswith your own men as much as possible since youre already paying or yourmercs anyway. Also, make sure you remember to release the garrison ater youveused them to ward o an attack. You must pay your garrisons by the day and theywill not stop billing you until you tell them to disband!

    The prots you make rom your captured territories are not static - as the7)countrys economy improves, so will your prots. Stability and a well-unctioninginrastructure can go a long way in making you rich!

    Grenade and rocket launchers along with dynamite and other explosives very oten8) give you a chance to make your own entrance to a ortied position. Feel ree toexperiment. There are not many builders in the country so the destruction youwrought will remain in the occupied area as a monument to your aggression.

    A scope is a versatile improvement that will t on many dierent guns and will9)dramatically increase a weapons accuracy and range. However, bear in mind thata scope will decrease a mercs width o vision and increase the amount o APrequired per shot. You can also achieve a nice balance between accuracy andAP cost by using a collimator sight. While the collimator sight does not bring thesame advantages to a weapon, its disadvantages are not as numerous or denedas with a scope.

    It is better to be well armored than light and quick. Mercs will take a lot o10)punishment over the course o their employment because they will generallybe outnumbered and outgunned. Helmets, vests, pants, and other armor areessentially in improving the survivability o your mercs. Dont skimp on armor -buy it when its available and keep it in good shape. Repairing armor is ree and

    even buying new armor is a lot cheaper than hiring a new mercenary ater one oyour other mercs got hosed.
